Mass messaging error

It appears that the mass message delivery tried to send today's Signpost to me, but failed with a message of Delivery of "The Signpost: 31 March 2019" to User talk:SkyGazer 512 failed with an error code of readonly. Apparently this happened to a large number of other users as well, see [1], but it did not fail for everyone; it worked successfully for most users. I know nothing about mass messaging, so does anyone know why this is? I've never seen it happen before. Many thanks, --SkyGazer 512 My talk page 15:25, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Ah thank you, DannyS712. I thought it may be being discussed elsewhere but I wasn't sure where to look. It's not a big deal for me, I can just as easily look at another user's talk page for the articles, but of course it would be helpful to fix for the future. Note that similar readonly errors occurred for 224 of the 325 intended recipients of a June 12 mass mailing. (It was resent to these users after waiting a couple days.) – Reidgreg (talk) 12:30, 17 June 2019 (UTC)

Change tag

Currently, edits made through the extension are tagged as MassMessage delivery. I propose that this tag link to Wikipedia:Mass message senders. Thoughts? --DannyS712 (talk) 04:02, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

@DannyS712: keep in mind that this is the same tag used for global massmessages as well a local. Should just be an edit at MediaWiki:Tag-massmessage-delivery to link it somewhere. — xaosflux Talk 11:16, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
Ideally, I think this page could use an overhaul first Such as spiting to Wikipedia:Mass messaging perhaps to describe the process and guidelines, keep this page for the user group, and perhaps make Wikipedia:Mass messaging/requests (with a preload form control). Looks like the 'Requesting_a_mailing' stuff is duplicated? The 'detailed' parts of it area probably only needed in one spot? Need separate lists for membership in a project, and mass messages from that project

I had to remove my membership in Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history, because it was the only way to stop mass messages from that project.

I like being a member in various projects. But I want granular control on what I get from them. Newsletters, mass messages, etc.. -- Timeshifter (talk) 00:54, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

Hi @Timeshifter:, how a project and mailing list coordinator maintain their records is up to that project. They certainly can have different lists, even using the mass-message list content model, for "members" and for "mailed members". — xaosflux Talk 01:10, 26 September 2019 (UTC)

Request for guidance on how to opt-out of specific mass mailings: 30 Sept 2019

I've had a particular Mass Mailing topic repeatedly posted on my personal talk page. I've deleted it each time (I'm just not interested in their topic).

The mass mailing contained no information on why I was included in the first place, nor any instructions on how to opt-out: AFAIC, this is SPAM.

How to I permanently opt-out of this (or any specific) individual mass mailing list? -hh (talk) 14:55, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

  • Hi @-hh:. I'm going to assume you are referring to the AfroCine mailing. This one is a bit odd, in that it didn't come from here on the English Wikipedia (the HTML comments hidden on that message show the source). In this case, you can unsubscribe here: meta:MassMessage/Lists/AfroCine. This message distribution has several issues that should get addressed by the sender: User:Jamie Tubers. Jamie, can you (1) please add a link to the mailing list in future mailings so that anyone that wants to (un)subscribe can find the list easily? (2) Can you please clean up your list, the local mass message log is full of errors from your mailing. — xaosflux Talk 15:31, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

@-hh: on mass-messages sent from Wikipedia, we do encourage an opt-out to be included in the actual text (c.f. Wikipedia:Mass_message_senders#Before_making_your_request), we sometimes waive that for cases where everyone is opt-in only or it is for some special one-time reason (like ArbCom election notices). It is standard practice to include unsub information in most mailers, and we have coached the sender for this one. If you would like to opt-out of every mass-message, you can do so by adding Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your talk page. — xaosflux Talk 20:39, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

I'd remember to put an unsubscribe instruction in future messages for this list (This particular list is very broad, and the message is sent only once in a long while). Hi User:Jamie Tubers. I appreciate that you've performed the UNSUB. I trust that it won't happen again from however you got my name in the first place. I can understand the intent of a mass mailing, but this was (1) permanently added to my public-facing talk page which then required me to take action to undo, and (2) included no guidance on why I was receiving the mailing or how to opt-out. Both factors make the (annual) list use factor an irrelevant excuse. The intended message is to include a copy of the graphical invite box and the text "Adelaide Meetup 22 has been hastily arranged for today". If that can't be done then include the text of the Meetup without the Invitees. @Galendalia: Yes Sent. Sorry, I forgot to {{noping}} your user link, so you might get a lot of notifications (though that's one way to confirm it is delivered). For listing the content, the idea is to use {{tlus}} with the wikilink as the parameter, which makes it a little easier for us to copy and paste into the mass message form (and having it wikilinked makes it easier for us to check the message itself). But you had the link, the mailing list, and a properly formatted message with a free image, so you had all the important details. Onel5969 has opted out of mass mailings (and a user page marked 'retired'), otherwise sent to 64 pages with no errors. @Naypta: Hey, thanks for your hard work; I'm glad you've gotten the script working and you've clearly put a lot of effort into writing up instructions for people to switch over. I'm putting this request on hold – my worry is that this mass message mailing is a bit excessive. As I understand it, the old script would be entirely working if we replaced the two lines with token: mw.user.tokens.get("editToken") with token: mw.user.tokens.get("csrfToken"), right? That seems to me like the best short-term solution to me. And long-term, perhaps it'd be best to avoid another fork and just transition to enterprisey's script. We can ask an interface admin to change the two lines of code now and that'd solve the problems now, though, avoiding the need to ask 400 people (who never asked to me messaged, and who include a number of e.g. indefinitely blocked editors) to take the time to read a message and switch their script – what do you think? Also, as I understand it, many people who use this script won't have backlinks to the script as a JavaScript comment; that part is optional, so this mailing is going to miss a (likely substantial) share of the people using the script. Best, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) 16:58, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
@L235: Sure thing, that seems reasonable! I thought about asking an interface admin to change the script when I originally forked it, but my concern with that was that WP:IADMIN isn't clear on what the threshold for IADMIN intervention is - that is to say, whether they would intervene for a regular bugfix of a script, or whether they'd only intervene if, say, a bug in a script was causing a client-side security vulnerability. I defer to your far greater experience in that arena - my fork, as you quite rightly point out, has the only meaningful difference of fixing the token to be a csrfToken.
The only disadvantage to that way of going about it is that I'm here to bugfix and potentially take feature requests for my fork, which obviously isn't the case at the moment by just changing Equazcion's original script. Having said that, encouraging users to transition to enterprisey's script is a way of getting around that problem to some extent - although I'll admit I'm not sure how that'd be done without sending a mass message like this. The reason I put in the request was because most users I don't imagine will install userscripts regularly enough to notice the issue immediately, and if the issue is fixed on the original script, most probably won't ever notice it at all. I don't think the mailing would miss a huge number of users, either, given that the instructions on the original page Equazcion made (smartly) use a template that auto-includes the backlink.

Personally, I would just make the fix to Equazcion's version (as I see no harm in doing so), but I'll wait for another interface admin to comment (pinging, hmm let's see, xaosflux ) as we don't really have a written policy for this sort of thing yet. @Enterprisey and Naypta: so I don't love any of these options, but there are better ones and worse ones. As Equazcion appears to have abandoned their script upkeep (which is just fine) getting people to stop using it is a benefit, and generally is a security improvement. As far as this message goes, if it is going to be used, I'd want some more in-your-face warnings about what risks people would be taking if they continue (namely, trusting that any future edit that Naypta makes to their script is benign). As "script installers" seem to be somewhat popular, getting the two of you to work towards moving this to a community managed gadget would be my preference - then deprecate the personal scripts (at that time a warning and a final notice mass message to people might be a good idea). — xaosflux Talk 20:05, 20 May 2020 (UTC)
@Xaosflux: I personally don't see the point in moving Equazcion's script and/or my fork to be a gadget, I have to say. Enterprisey's script is already a gadget, so if we're going down the route of pure and simple consolidation, we probably ought to just move people onto that, and change this mass message to say "heyo, you should move to the gadget now" in slightly longer words. Same. This specific issue on the token move was a big one, but it's incredibly easy and obvious to change; I fixed a bunch that were causing issues the day it happened, surprised this was the first I'm seeing it. I think we should be hesitant to go in and change code for people, but if it's incredibly minor and obvious and thoughtless with a lotta bang for our buck, we should. @Amorymeltzer: I don't have any serious objection to tweaking the broken script with this specific fix - just think we shouldn't be trying to support personal userscripts for people that have left the project - they are security risks because if their account is compromised it will be less likely to be quickly detected. — xaosflux Talk 11:08, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
We're in total agreement there! I think I see simple like this as harmless, given the simplicity, install base, and the fact that it's not the author's "fault" things changed underneath them. On the other hand, when intoken is finally removed I wouldn't support changing that: been deprecated for years, will require (somewhat) more editorial thought, and so on. ~ Amory (u • t • c) 09:50, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

I'm not sure a mass message to all users willing to provide third opinions is suitable for something that's not directly connected to 3O itself, and has already been separately raised at VPR. Once the draft is in a workable state, bringing it back to VPP or VPR may be appropriate, or alternatively an RfC could be started on the subject. Naypta ☺ | ✉ talk page | 21:51, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
@Naypta: I’m the person who began that VPR discussion. Consensus was established that we should seek the attention of interested editors and gain agreement before moving forward, so this is what I’m doing. In addition, the proposed 4O is very connected to 3O, and can used with or without first using 3O. It may help to read the VPR discussion for context. In any case, I think it’s a decision for the mass message sender to make, but thanks for your help! MrSwagger21 (talk) 21:58, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
I did read the discussion - mass messaging 3O Wikipedians wasn't discussed there, as far as I've read; WT:3O was suggested as an appropriate venue. My point is that not all 3O Wikipedians, and perhaps not even a plurality of them, will be interested in a draft for an alternative dispute resolution process, that as you point out yourself runs parallel to 3O. Of course, you are right, this is a decision for a mass message sender to make, but I think it's important to take these things into account; they may not otherwise have been aware of the VPR discussion. Please consider that every mass message that the recipients did not explicitly sign up for will get some percentage of the recipients riled up, which eats away at the good will needed to successfully solicit interest. Personally, I don't think it's a great idea to send an unsolicited message to close to 300 editors. isaacl (talk) 22:31, 22 June 2020 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I don’t fully understand why 3O editors wouldn’t be interested in 4O. The two are virtually the same, save for the number of disputants. isaacl said at the VPR discussion: I prefer trying to gain some agreement around what would be the best approach, before editing any proposal...So if you think that editors who are interested in the third opinion procedure are those who would participate in your proposed procedure, then you should be discussing it with them. The only way I can viably discuss the proposal with 3O editors is via mass message, because like I said at VPR, the discussion would just die out at WT:3O. This isn’t really a question of interest or not, we are still trying to figure out if 4O should be a thing at all. You are correct that the senders may not have been aware of the discussion, so thank you for including that here. MrSwagger21 (talk) 22:37, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

If initiating a conversation on the talk page of the third opinion page doesn't garner responses, then that's a good indication there isn't a lot of interest in that audience in participating. A lot of people are really touchy about getting unsolicited messages, so I'm very wary of getting people upset who may then actively campaign against an idea, instead of letting those interested work on developing it further. I suggest also notifying other interested groups of the discussion, such as the talk page for the Teahouse. It's up to you and any other else interested in driving this initiative to find volunteers. isaacl (talk) 22:51, 22 June 2020 (UTC)

The user above suggested it and I think it would save all of our time and put an end to this ongoing back-and-forth. @Usernameunique: Can you make the message to send a page on its own, such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Good articles/GAN Backlog Drives/July 2021/Notification or just in your sandbox with all the correct formatting. @Usernameunique: I have just uploaded the list from User:GA bot/Stats but changed who is on the list. They have to have 10 or more reviews and have edited in the least year to be added (This is ~460 users). I changed this since there were concerns raised about "spamming" inactive and uninterested users with talk page notifications. Your original proposal would have messaged ~1150 users, so I reduced this. Additionally you placed a watchlist message request so I don't think notifying these users was necessary.
