Warm Welcome[edit]

Hi Hugh, it's good see you getting stuck in to editing Wikipedia. I doubt you'll remember me (Doug Taylor) from the old days of SCUBA-L and rec.scuba, etc. but I was the 'Keeper of the NED FUC'. Anyway, I was very impressed by your recent contribution to Buoyancy compensator - I hope I accurately corrected what I took to be a typo ('life' for 'lift').

You might decide to release your illustration of the centroid into the public domain by uploading it to Wikimedia and then linking the thumbnail into the body of the article. You'll find that it gets frowned on when you link to your own website as it could be a violation of WP:OR, but more importantly, that section could do with a few more illustrations :)

I would recommend using Inkscape to create vector graphics (.svg) as they scale well in Wikipedia.

Finally, if you haven't seen it yet, there's a project SCUBA WikiProject you might be interested in joining. We could certainly do with your contributions.

Hi Doug! Been a few years since the NED days.

I am aware of the WP:OR concern, and I do intend to resolve it here by cleaning up those illustrations and releasing them under open licence as soon as I get the time! Part of that includes spending the time to research the specifics on those OGL to understand it first too, as I'm also deliberating on open-licencing some of my collection of Cayman Brac / Little Cayman photographs too, to help out the content of those pages as well.

In the meantime, there's still plenty to learn about how to use the Wiki editing functions too :-)

Commercial product promotions[edit]

A premptive note to someone who I expect will be visiting my TALK page shortly.

Your edits are being deleted by several other people, not just one person, because your actions are in very clear violation of Wikipedia principles. Wiki is not a venue that is seeking to document every fact in the world - it is seeking only that which is WP:NOTEABLE ... and the product with which you very obviously have a personal affiliation is simply not noteable.

Furthermore, even if it were notable, your affiliation means that you have an ethical Conflict of Interest which limits your ability to contribute; see the WP:NPOV guidelines for the proper way to contribute and interact.

Less-lethal name change[edit]

Hello hh, you chose to stand up for the current title of "Non-Lethal" for that article, I have been reading the backstory and I have some questions:

Is the main basis for the current name the American dod 3000.x directive from 1996 as presented in the talk page?
Is the American dod NPOV given their relevant perverse incentives?

I think the answers are sufficiently self evident but I hold Wikipedia to a higher standard than that and so now we enter the wikipedia good job questions: would the most effective way to change this title be to provide buckets of sources on both the dangers of these weapons as well as the obscurantist etymology of "non-lethal"? To whom do I direct my crusade? I have never fussed this hard on Wikipedia so I would appreciate some advice. "Non-lethal" is murder apologia propagated by companies selling these weapons, it has no place in this here encyclopedia in my opinion. Advocatejake (talk) 04:24, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

short answer:

a) No, it is not mainly DoDD 3000.3 - - as was noted within the pages you've claimed to have already read;

b) No, I don't believe that to be true, nor do I believe it is relevant, since Wiki's role is to document;

c) Regarding high standards for Wiki, the challenge is that NL has formal & vetted definition published by an authoritative source, whereas LTL falls significantly short of that level of rigor. FWIW, please understand that this is really discussing the quality of the documentation for the nomenclature, not if we happen to agree with said nomenclature;

d) No, that's not an appropriate approach, because your point of contention was already addressed ~25 years ago when the likes of DoDD 3000.3 was first published back in 1996. Ditto for the NATO NL definition, first published in the 2000's;

e) Direct your crusade at the source of the naming, which not Wiki, for Wiki's role is to document what "is". If you consider the most prominent supporters of the NL name to be DoD and NATO, then that's where you should go start. If you're successful in getting them to formally change their nomenclature, that's the documentation that Wiki needs for Wiki to be updated. -hh (talk) 18:23, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
