I often write for Wikimedia Foundation blogs about various language Wikipedia communities, e.g. Punjabi Wikipedia, Esperanto Wikipedia, Sanskrit Wikipedia, Urdu Wikipedia, etc. In this connection, I need to send messages to a number of respondents. While I respect the right of individual Wikipedians to respond or not to do so, and I do not complain about non-responding persons, I request to please help me in sending messages easily from English Wikipedia as I AM NOT SENDING ANY SPAM. I only conduct surveys which showcase Wikipedia communities.

I am asking this help here because take the case of my writeups on Esperanto or Punjabi Wikipedia. Whatever I've written is a onetime activity. I need not be requiring to send messages again to the same Wikipedia members UNLESS I'VE GOT A GOOD REASON FOR IT. English Wikipedia is unique because my work extends research across many Wikis and at least some of the Wikipedians of other languages have handful of edits on English Wikipedia in addition to their language Wikipedia and can be reached here. Therefore easy contacts can be done over here. --Muzammil (talk) 19:52, 19 August 2014 (UTC)

  • So you want to use en: to send messages to users that might visit here who would be interested in pages on other projects, but don't check in on those projects? What type of distribution are you expecting in terms of number of targets/message and frequency? — xaosflux Talk 23:23, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
  • In your recent request for permissions you said you needed to send a lot of wiki-mail, do you no longer want to use wiki-mail and use talk-messages instead? — xaosflux Talk 23:25, 19 August 2014 (UTC)
@Xaosflux:
  1. As I told you, my target immediately will be the dual language contributors (English + some other language) but I may require help from dedicated contributors also, in executing projects such as my comparative study of the performing arts articles in Indian and Engish Wikipedias.
  2. Wiki-mails have a limitation - not all users specify their emails. Therefore, while I would like to use wiki-mail, I feel in terms of reach and impact, talk-messages are likely to have more impact.--Muzammil (talk) 09:29, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
@Hindustanilanguage:, how often do you plan on mass-messaging? Can you point us to your distribution list? — xaosflux Talk 12:16, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
I do not know what exactly you mean by "distribution list". Right now I am working on two projects - carrying research on the Maithili Wikipedians (incubator project) and Turkish Wikipedians. For the first one, there are only 9 contributors and I am in touch with two of them thru emails. In the Turkish Wikipedians, I realized, in most cases have not specified emails. Hence, reaching them through talk pages can be effective and many have also contributed on English Wikipedia as well. In later stages, I plan to study Indian contributors writing specifically about region-specific topics such as Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, etc with many bilingual contributors and thus help me document about both English and non-English Wikipedia. --Muzammil (talk) 14:20, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
See the example above "Request for newsletter delivery: July 27, 2014". If your frequency is low, you can always just request a send on this page and someone will send it for you. If your distribution is very low, then a project page and using notify may suffice. — xaosflux Talk 15:50, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
There are some points here:
  1. Unlike "Request for newsletter delivery: July 27, 2014", nobody might've signed for a survey which might designed to meet specific requirements.
  2. The list(s) will not be static and will change with requirements.
  3. The requirement will probably be 3-4 times a months to maybe 30-50 respondents.
  4. All surveys have not been successful. I must admit that nobody responded for Pali as probably all the Wikipedians left not just Pali but also any other Wiki (including en) on which they were active. --Muzammil (talk) 18:14, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
Just my 2¢: I think we should give him this right. Actually, I think Muzammil should have MassMessage rights at Meta, so that it applies to all projects. Here's my thinking: Muzammil's a regular with 42,000 edits across many projects, so he knows the ropes. The right is just as easily removed as it is granted. If it becomes a problem, then we can take it away. In the meantime, we could have a volunteer getting useful stuff done, with less hassle than manual delivery requires. So why not? I wish to request mass message sending rights to invite multiple users to the WikiProjects I am currently involved in. I am involved in multiple WikiProjects that are being revived and I wish to be able to promote these WikiProjects. If I do gain mass message rights I intend to put it to use in promoting any and all semi-active, inactive, and revived WikiProjects, etc. Thank you for your consideration and assistance,

Not done STJMLCC, I'm not comfortable that you will be able to use this tool error free yet. One way to demonstrate competency for a future request is by doing everything but "pressing the button" by creating your messages and distribution lists, then by requesting the distribution here on this page. Once you establish a pattern of good distributions you can re-request the permissions. Well formated, project appropriate requests for distribution here generally get completed within a day or two. — xaosflux Talk 05:09, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

I accept your decision and approve of it wholeheartedly. Thank you for your time, help, and assistance,

Question: What do you need it for? Generally addition to this group requires you to either be a very established user or the need to send messages to large groups of editors (like a wikiproject mailing list) and having demonstrated the ability to do so with multiple granted requests for messages to be sent on your behalf below. — {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 10:07, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
Well, since Miyagawa has a list to do for the WikiCup, I would help him and do it myself. Any other questions? Yoshi24517Chat Online 16:22, 7 May 2015 (UTC)
  •  Not done I don't feel that you need this tool. When you said, please tell me what I have to do to get the right, it gives the impression of WP:HATCOLLECT. And I think, Miyagawa generally request his delieveries here and other mass message senders handle those requests pretty quickly so I don't think you need this flag to send out messages on Miyagawa's behalf. Best, Jim Carter 03:39, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Just to add Yoshi, I wouldn't want you to help out. You're not a judge. The alternative would be one of the other judges, not one of the competitors. Miyagawa (talk) 08:45, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

Archiving permission requests

I'm proposing we utilize either KingpinBot or MusikBot to archive all requests for the mass message sender user right to Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Archive, where most other permission requests are archived. There aren't many requests for this right, however, so perhaps it's not worth the while. Thoughts? MusikAnimal talk 01:34, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

  • Will it pick up all of the already archived requests and move them? I'm hesitant here because usually I use Technical 13's (Original by Equazcion) OneClickArchiver (Original) script to archive the requests here after a few days/week(s), and changing the archive location will put a halt to that (at least temporarily). I'm tempted to say not to bother with this page for now. I've already suggested and offered to create a PERM 1CA module for the "regular" PERM pages, and would still be happy to do that. I just need to know what parameters to work with, I really dislike the current system of segregating everything so much. — {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 02:42, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom election notice

I was just wondering what the basis was of who was selected to receive the ArbCom elections are now open! messages. As I've participated in editing ACE2015 pages and I have an active account, I was surprised not to receive a notice. I'm obviously aware of the election but it made me wonder how many other editors did not receive a message and what criteria was used to select who did and who did not receive this notice.
In order to get wider participation of Wikipedia's editors in this election, it would be worth sending out a second message to those who didn't get one in the first mailing. Liz Read! Talk! 11:43, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

New list style available

A new page content model is available for mailing lists, an example can be seen here: Wikipedia talk:Mass message senders/NewList. Currently, only sysops can create the lists. Any thoughts on having this style list get used more? — xaosflux Talk 15:57, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

Is the text on the page fixed, or can it be customized? Assuming there is a default for the text, could it be changed to clarify that the page being added is a recipient page for the mass message, and an example given for users adding their talk pages? For example, the headings could be "Add recipient page" and "Recipient pages", the text box could have the label "Recipient page", and there could be text under the first heading such as "To add your talk page, enter "User talk:<your user name> in the 'Recipient page' box".
I like the greater ease of use, but I don't like that only those with administrative privileges can set up the mailing list. Also, with this format, is it still possible to use {{Mailing list member}} to manage the inactive/blocked status of recipients? isaacl (talk) 17:25, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
The page can be edited (go ahead and hit edit on that demo link above), the "description" component rendered as WikiText. This content model only supports pages, not templates (that I can see so far). I sent a message to the now current list, it worked as normal - including not sending to the invalid name. This may not be a fix for all use-cases, but may be useful for some. — xaosflux Talk 18:18, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
While only admins can create that page with that content model, once created the page can be moved (renamed) by standard users - we could easily make batches of empty pages of that content model that anyone could move for their own needs. — xaosflux Talk 18:22, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
See batch below - feel free to experiment. — xaosflux Talk 19:34, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

Is there any reason why Special:CreateMassMessageList can't be granted to MMSs? I mean, security wise? Kharkiv07 (T) 16:51, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

Currently it requires the changecontentmodel userright, which for beany reason is sysop only. — xaosflux Talk 22:53, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

Preloaded text for mass message delivery requests

Regarding the preloaded text that is currently found at Wikipedia talk:Mass message senders/Preload-delivery-request: given that it appears to have been modelled after a request I made, I thought I would clarify that I include the intended date of delivery in the request heading for the convenience of those performing the deliveries. With this change, the current date is inserted into the heading. It is of course up to those fulfilling the requests to determine what works best; my suggestion, though, is that it is more useful to put the date of delivery in the heading than the date when the request was submitted. isaacl (talk) 03:37, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

Ah, I thought you were just correcting my accidental hard-coding of an old date instead safesubst'ing the current date. So you want people to change that to a future date if they want it later, and not use the "requested delivery date" line instead? — xaosflux Talk 13:50, 23 April 2016 (UTC)
I was indeed doing so, but based on how I format requests, I replaced it with a placeholder to get the requester to fill in the desired delivery date in the heading. For clarity, I think it is also useful to explicitly state the delivery date in the request (as you can see from my linked request, I place the desired date in the sentence making the request). On a side note, the delivery date already provides some distinction between archived requests, but perhaps the purpose could also be included in the heading to make it easier to find an old request. isaacl (talk) 14:17, 23 April 2016 (UTC)

  • Not sure How does this differ from the message you already put on my talk page with AWB and why was it placed on my talk page? Also, your requested mailing list isn't in an acceptable format, we generally won't make your mailing list for you. Finally, why are you trying to build a mailing list of people who might not want this message when AfC has a Participants/mailing list? — {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 12:34, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
@Technical 13: That was a closure review for the RfC. The RfC has now been reopened and I'd like everyone at AfC to know that and also participate, because there were barely 38/18. AfC doesn't certainly have many people but it plays a huge part in the community, so the more input, the more accurate the consensus. Since you've pointed out the mailing list, you can just use that. Thanks! --QEDKTC 14:35, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
  • Meh, I don't know. I'll leave this one for someone else to decide. — {{U|Technical 13}} (etc) 14:50, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
Fine with me but faster the better - the RfC closes soon. --QEDKTC 14:59, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
  •  Not done The mailing list in not appropriate to send this sort of invitation. There should be a separate list where participants has listed themselves to receive this sort of messages. On the other hand, a message that doesn't has opt-out instructions can be misunderstood as spam. I suggest you post this message at the projects' talk page. Best, Jim Carter 16:12, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
  • @Jim Carter: Shouldn't Legobot do it? --QEDKTC 17:19, 19 February 2015 (UTC)
  • @QEDK: Yes, Legobot does this. Legobot will only send a notification about RfCs to a editor, if they have opt-ed in here themselves. Those who list themself in the Feedback request service, actually wish to receive invitations for RfCs. But in this case it is different. You can't use a mailing list (created for sending backlog drive notifications) to invite participants for RfC. Jim Carter 03:25, 20 February 2015 (UTC)

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

You may also wish to know that The Core Contest is running through the month of March. Head there for further details - they even have actual prizes!

Can someone please deliver a notice of consensus to redirect all IRC help links through a disclaimer to all users with links in their user space.

Here are the details

Thanks for your assistance! PHANTOMTECH (talk) 21:13, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

@PhantomTech: Most of these are achieved through a template - why not just update that template to include this disclaimer? Additionally, the list says that I have a link to it in my userspace, but an arbertary look means I cannot for the life of me find it. In this case, personalised messages or fixing it yourself is likely to be the best solution here. Because of these issues, I'm marking this as no Declined Mdann52 (talk) 20:38, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
@Mdann52: All the templates I could find have been updated, the search I used to find the links should have only added a page to the list if "Wikipedia-en-help" was directly in the source. The message has a link to a list of all the pages that were used to make the target list, yours is at User:Mdann52/AfC welcome. PHANTOMTECH (talk) 20:46, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
But many of the users are inactive, or the pages are buried in long-forgotten user subpages (such as in my case). I checked out the list, and from my quick checks, around 50-75% are inactive or blocked. As I said, many of these are buried in userspace and doing no harm, so either fix them yourself, leave them or notify the users individually letting them know where they are, as in this case, a mass notification to all these accounts (including one bot) is not going to do much good IMO. Mdann52 (talk) 21:05, 7 June 2015 (UTC)
@Mdann52: I've gone through and removed inactive users (more than around 1 yr without contributions or 6 months if they had less than around a thousand total) which trimmed the list from 66 to 44. There are a lot of links in subpages but about half are on the user page, I'm not sure how the trim affected that but I assume there wasn't a big change. With 44 users, and even more pages, personalized messages would take a long time. I think that with the link to the list of pages, a template message to the users would work well, though if you still disagree I'll try to find the best way to do an automatic replacement that can be applied to all instances. PHANTOMTECH (talk) 21:43, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

@PhantomTech: This mainly appears to be due to use of Template:Freenode, so it's probably worth just requesting that is changed instead - I'll try cobbling something together later on for this, but can't guarantee I'll get the time. Mdann52 (talk) 07:34, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

@Mdann52: {{freenode}} and {{IRC}} are used to link to the channel, but making the template check what channel it's linking to and then having it redirect to WP:IRC help disclaimer if it links to wikipedia-en-help seems like a bit of an odd solution. PHANTOMTECH (talk) 14:11, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
@PhantomTech: It's the same template I believe. TBH, it's a simple #if statement by the looks of it, I'll sandbox something up and see if it fixes it. In any case, sending a mass-spam with a link of pages, 90% if which are not relevent to the user, is not the way MM is designed to be used (as far as I'm aware, someone else can overrule if I'm mistaken!). Here are the details

Thanks for your assistance!  Buaidh  21:49, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

@Buaidh: Everything looks fine except the content. It is written in raw HTML, with <a> (anchor) tags. You will need to convert this content to wiki markup. Some effort to improve the overall appearance may also be beneficial. For instance, the lists could be made into prose so that it doesn't take up as much space on the user's talk page. Here is an example of a similar invitation. Finally, you should probably state why the user was contacted (they are a member of the WikiProject), and moreover how they can unsubscribe from future mailings. MusikAnimal talk 22:56, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
A better example. You may not need to list all the amenities and what to bring, they will learn that on the event page and when they RSVP. I think the idea is not to clutter the user's talk page with something they may not be interested in, so try to put it into prose that briefly describes the overall goal/agenda of the event. MusikAnimal talk 23:08, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
I've compacted and reformatted the content. It should be ready to go. Yours aye,  Buaidh  01:07, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
@Buaidh: Looks good! Only thing is I still think you should indicate why the user was contacted and how they can unsubscribe from further messaging. I assume your recipients are members of Wikiproject Colorado? We don't necessarily require an unsubscribe link, but here you are sending on behalf of a meetup. That implies there may be more meetups for which some users may wish not to be notified about. For this reason I recommend a centralized place to keep your mailing list for Colorado-related events, such as Wikipedia:Meetup/Colorado/Invite list. This is more formal and can be used by other hosts of events to send out mailings. Again this NYC wiknic invite is a good example – a small line of text at the bottom of the message is fine, as long it's clear how to unsubscribe. MusikAnimal talk 01:51, 18 June 2015 (UTC)
Good ideas. Thanks, I've made your suggested changes. Yours aye,  Buaidh  15:17, 18 June 2015 (UTC)

Hmm, a follow up notice. These I have not seen before, and it may be construed by some as spammy given they've already received one notice. Perhaps we could send only to those who have signed up for the event? Any input from other mass message senders? MusikAnimal talk 15:48, 2 July 2015 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal: Peronally, I'm not sure here - they have a clear opt-out link, so that seems fine. How many responses has the previous notice had? If none or only a few have responded, I see the point, but if they have had a lot, then I don't think this is needed. Mdann52 (talk) 16:20, 2 July 2015 (UTC)

Can someone please deliver the WP:HOCKEY monthly newsletter? Thanks!

Here's the details!

Thank you for your assistance! :) The Pancakeof Heaven! 00:38, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

@The Pancake of Heaven!: You need to have a properly formatted mailing list, per WP:MMS#Before making your request, or no messages can be sent. Please also include with your message a link/instructions on how recipients can opt-out of future messages. - Evad37 [talk] 09:08, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
Sure! The Pancakeof Heaven! 09:29, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
@Evad37:  Pending approval:The instructions to remove the user from the mailing list are on the newsletter itself. The others have been taken care of. Thanks. The Pancakeof Heaven! 09:44, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

  • @Evad37:. This "newsletter" was sent out without any knowledge nor approval from WP:HOCKEY. It contains a few mistakes as well as promoting task forces that we actively discourage. In the future, can you please make sure the WikiProject approves of the newsletter before sending it out? Thanks, -- Tavix (talk) 16:02, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
    • Apologies, Tavix, I'll do a more thorough check in future before sending. Would you like to me to revert or append a note to the edits? - Evad37 [talk] 16:27, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
  • It'd probably be best to just revert it. From what I can tell, it looks like WP:HOCKEY hasn't sent one out since 2008, so I'd like to see consensus from the project first to see if that's something we'd want to resume doing. Thanks Evad37, for your understanding. -- Tavix (talk) 16:33, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

Hello? Anyone? -- The Pancakeof Heaven! 01:12, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
On hold @The Pancake of Heaven!: How did you get this list? It appears you created it... if you wish to send a mass message there should be a way people sign up or you're delivering to a specific group of people who have a high chance of being interested with opt-out notices and the like. Kharkiv07 (T) 02:24, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
@Kharkiv07: This was originally from Wikipedia:WikiProject Food and drink/Notifications, but it wasn't using the {{Mailing list member}} template. I moved the page to the one that you mentioned. See the All the newsletter notices/info can be found here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Food and drink/Newsletters  • Wikipedia:WikiProject Food and drink/Members/participants. Thank you. -- The Pancakeof Heaven! 03:22, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
If you want me to use the original newsletter list (for some reason) I'm fine with it. -- The Pancakeof Heaven! 13:58, 11 August 2016 (UTC)

Can someone please deliver →Happy Independence Day Message to the following Indian Wikipedians←

Here are the details
  • Mailing list: all Wikipedians present in Category:Indian Wikipedians
  • Subject of mass mailing: Happy Independence Day!
  • Content of mass mailing: Hello dearest user, A very Happy Independence Day to you. 70 years and on let us pray for our country today!
  • Requested delivery date: 15th August 2016 i.e Today, right now!

Thanks for your assistance! If some mass message sender like User:Xaosflux or User:Krishna Chaitanya Velaga could help me! VarunFEB2003 I am Online 12:59, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Not done @VarunFEB2003: While this is a very nice idea, this is a huge category to send a message to, especially for something not directly related to Wikipedia. When we send a mass message we do it to a very specific group of people who are clearly interested in the topic, people who have put themselves in your category haven't signed up for mass messages but are merely classifying themselves. Once again, it was very nice of you, and happy Independence Day! Kharkiv07 (T) 13:12, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
So if I provide a list of say 10 people can it be done? And Thanks! @Kharkiv07: VarunFEB2003 I am Online 13:14, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
I'm still apprehensive about sending anything that's not directly related to Wikipedia through mass message, that being said around the holidays people often leave messages by hand on editors' talk pages, if you only have ten you want to send then that's probably a better way to do it! The Pancake of Heaven! Is this mailing listed intended to be for ONE RUN only? I ask because your message does not include information for how to opt-out of future mailings. — xaosflux Talk 14:32, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
The Pancake of Heaven!, I suggest you clarify in the message what the consequences are for each choice. In particular, which ones mean that no more messages will be sent to the respondent? isaacl (talk) 22:25, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
Is there consensus for this at WP:FOOD? Having a "role call" seems fairly unusual for a Wikiproject... especially since the definition of "inactive" that WP:FOOD (and similarly for other projects) uses is "no contributions to Wikipedia for over 6 months", which can be checked without spamming everyone on the list (there's evan a tool for checking). Wikipedia is voluntary, so where possible projects shouldn't be requiring anyone to do anything. - Evad37 [talk] 16:19, 27 August 2016 (UTC)
P.S. An automatically-updated list of editors active in the topic area is available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Directory/Description/WikiProject Food and drink - Evad37 [talk]
Request Canceled: Didn't notice there was such a tool! I'll use that from now on, compliments of Evad37. Thank you. WikiPancake 📖 11:02, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
