Our fifth Editor of the Week is...

... benzband. Please feel free to drop by his talk page and offer your congratulations. The ideal candidate for "Editor of the Week" is an editor who works hard, possibly doing behind-the-scenes kind of stuff, who does not get the recognition and acknowledgement that they should. EotW this week

Hello all,

I am going away this weekend and won't have any chance at internet access until Sunday afternoon, and even from then to Monday afternoon my internet is going to be spotty. So, if someone else wants to take care of notifying or recipient this week, I would appreciate it. Thanks. Go Phightins! 20:18, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

  • I'm working Sunday night till 9PM Central. If no one else steps up to pinch-hit, I'll "gitterdone" by midnight. ```Buster Seven Talk 22:41, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
    • If someone can shoot me the procedure at my talk page, and confirm that User:Deb is the recipient, I will be happy to do so. I apologize for my lack of participation here, but i did post the ad I created at a couple projects and someone from one of them reposted it, so I anticipate an increase in community wide response. Let me know on my talk page please. Thanks. ps I have one more hour to midnight than buster. Gtwfan52 (talk) 22:50, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
  • I'm also available to present the award if necessary. The procedure for doing so is at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week#Announcing recipients. isaacl (talk) 23:02, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
  • Just to clarify....User Wetman is next in line, not Deb. ```Buster Seven Talk 08:04, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
    • Gtwfan52, I'd say go ahead and present the award to Wetman, following the procedure I pointed to above. isaacl (talk) 22:26, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
Also. if anyone wants to work on the project main page banner, here is a sandbox. Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page/sandbox Preparing it before hand seems a more more efficient option for getting things done orderly. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 02:21, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

As Gtwfan52 was unable to do so, I've presented this week's recognition to Wetman. isaacl (talk) 03:03, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Members of EotW. Check out User Wetmans response. A feel-good for us all. ```Buster Seven Talk 13:23, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Final decision on Worm and on Admins

Just so we can sort out both these questions finally, please give your short answer on what you think should happen.. (If a decision has already been taken on admins, my apologies for restarting this issue non-deliberately)

Do we award Worm with this award? Do we allow admins to receive future awards, as long as they are under-appreciated?

  • My answer to them will be Yes and Yes. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 11:48, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
  • My answer is No and No. Buster Seven Talk 13:06, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
  • No and no per what Bishonen said on the nom talk page. Go Phightins! 17:29, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
  • No and no. isaacl (talk) 18:58, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
  • No and no, per Bishonen. The reaction at User talk:Wetman#Editor of the Week shows exactly why we should be focusing on undernoticed editors rather than those who are awarded with accolades all of the time. Ryan Vesey 19:06, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Do we wait for one more vote to seal this decision (per a technical majority - There are 9 members currently at EotW) or do we act on it right now (because of being a near-unanimous decision)? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 07:04, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Are there 9 members?. Or are there 11 members?. Maybe even more. Or are ther less? Within the Jargon of this project..."is every member also a clerk"???. Neither Isaacl nor Ryan Vesey have listed themselves as members. But, Isaacl is obviously a member as displayed by his active involvemnet. And Ryan is also an active participant in discussions which we need.
4 of the listed members on the Project Page have not been heard from since they signed in. So, really , we have 5 listed and active members plus Osaacl which makes 6 active involved "clerks". Confused? Me, too!! Bottomline:Its obvious that the consensus within the project is that Administrator Worm, while deserving, should be removed from the Q of accepted nominees. ```Buster Seven Talk 16:20, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Project main page/banner

Hello,

Firstly, I have create a Hall of Fame page for all the banners/project main pages. Displaying all our past awardees in one page along with a description of what they did is something that would look good, I think. Do feel free to edit the page as you see fit, and make it look better.

Secondly, the banners/project main pages at the user pages of Benzband and Wetman have not been substituted. Which will mean that if we change our banner (as we have been doing till now), those banners there will become outdated, and might break. I think we might be better off substituting them.

Finally, I am seriously confused as to what do we call them? We have a banner, which I suppose is the initial left-to-right red template that goes out with the congratulations. So what do we call these right-side template which display all the credentials> I become very confused whenever I have to talk about them because we dont have a real name for them.

TheOriginalSoni (talk) 13:45, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page has been substituted, so changes to the current editor of the week will not be reflected, but the new helper template I created to implement this infobox was not, as I was not aware of the appropriate syntax to deal with nested substitutions at the time. I know how to deal with it now, and I can make the appropriate changes.
I have been calling the box at the top of Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week an infobox, since that's what it looks like. The notification message copied onto user's talk pages is the recipient notification. isaacl (talk) 14:03, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Greetings. Great effort re:Wetman. I REALLY like the Infobox. It is very graphic and professional and unique to each recepient. A great addition for the Users trophy case. I especially like how the Infobox re-phrases and give a slightly different connotation than the Banner. We should be proud, I know I am! ```Buster Seven Talk 15:26, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Infobox it is. Just two things here - We have two separate pages named as "Project main page" and "Infobox". Ideally I would like to see both (and their subpages) merged under "Infobox". Also, we must be careful not to have the infobox say the same things as the banner. That way, it looks better :)
Also, anyone making the infobox is advised to use the sandbox first. That way, we can all just look at it, and add anything we think is necessary [For Wetman, I would have liked to add the number of distinct pages edited, and a link to toolserver and list of wikipedians by edits maybe] TheOriginalSoni (talk) 07:00, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
The two pages serve different purposes: Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/infobox implements a template for the infobox, so that an infobox can be created simply by filling in parameters to the template. Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page holds the infobox for the current editor of the week, using the infobox template (the page might be better named "Current Editor of the Week"), which makes it easy to update, since there is no extraneous markup to get in the way.
While I think clerks are welcome to use a sandbox, I am wary of adding too much overhead in the presentation of the award. Given the irregular schedules of Wikipedia editors, I think we need to rely on the clerks to be able to present the awards independently. (Of course, anyone is free to prepare the infoboxes in advance for anyone on the accepted queue.) isaacl (talk) 13:44, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
I agree with the page renaming. We need a more appropriate name than the one we currently use. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 16:25, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
I've renamed the page that holds the infobox for the current recipient to Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Current recipient infobox. isaacl (talk) 16:48, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
I liked the name "Current Editor of the Week" or "Current EotW" more than "Current recipient infobox". TheOriginalSoni (talk) 16:56, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
I thought about that, but since it is a subpage already beneath "WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/", I didn't want to repeat "Editor of the Week". Also since the page actually contains an infobox describing the current editor of the week, it's a bit more clear when including it on another page that an infobox is being included. isaacl (talk) 17:03, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
How about "Current Awardee"? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 17:06, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
I think "Awardee" is an awkward term, and we have been using the term "recipient" to emphasize the recognition aspect (and avoid connotations of winning and losing). I think it is more descriptive of the intent of the page to have "infobox" at the end, so when placing on a page to include it, the editor is aware that an infobox is being included. isaacl (talk) 17:12, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
While I do not really disagree with the separate choice of the words, the final name does ring a bit awkward to me. How about "Current EotW infobox"? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 19:18, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Moved discussions to the main talk page

Hello, Just so we do not have two different places where we discuss things, I have boldly moved all active discussions from the Nominations talk page to this page. All archives are there as they are (If somebody thinks they should be also moved, please do so.)

If anyone disagrees with my moving, please revert. Cheers, TheOriginalSoni (talk) 07:11, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

New Header

Hello,

I really liked the way WP:TAFI has this header which allows you to quickly access every page on the project from every other page (a problem I have faced quite often while here). So I have boldly made a header along similar lines for EotW. Do feel free to change it as necessary.

If you think that this header should not be placed, do feel free to remove it.

Cheers, TheOriginalSoni (talk) 08:51, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

The Selection Committee

The Main page mentions that this committee will discuss the nomination. I dont recall a discussion "per se" about establishing a committee and Im not suggesting that we need one (discussion or committee)...

  1. I have assumed that as soon as two clerks (of the 10 members) support a nomination, that makes 3 (including the nominator) and the nominee can be moved to the accepted page. Now that is just my interpretation of what has been working. Most nominations will be obviously credible and we can expedite quickly and easily. If there is a problem with that, let me know.
  2. Earlier today, based on the above, I moved User BlueMoonset from the Nom page to the Acc page. Much later I realized that e User Sagaciousphil should have been moved prior to BMs. So, if its all right with everyone, I will momentarily insert User SagPhil in the Q IN FRONT of BlueMoonset.
  3. User:AlwaysLearning, GiantSnowman's nominee, needs some support to get into the Q. As you may recall, in an effort to create more nominees, I approached Snowman and suggested he nominate AL. But, AL stalks Snowmans talk page and became aware of the possibility that he "might" get the Award. Even if another clerk supports Al, it will be a month before he gets the reward. AL knows he has been nominated. I'm slightly embarassed and I feel sorry for AL; he may not understand the delay. So, if one of you could support Always Learning, the delay will be lessened. Thank You.

```Buster Seven Talk 08:10, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Checking AL's nomination to check if I should support his nomination... Supported. Looks like a humble and an exemplary editor to me.
Once approved, I think we can, if everyone agrees, move AL to the top of the Q, so that he is awarded as soon as possible. It would look pretty bad if we award him after a month, than, say a week after he finds out about him being considered for this prize. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 08:24, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks Soni. I was going to suggest that but was reluctant since it was my screw-up. I'm glad you understand. Hope other clerks do too. I'll get to it tomorrow. ```Buster Seven Talk 08:42, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Recall that the discussion of the process is for everyone to read, not just the clerks, so nominators can get a sense about how things work. It can be modified to say that the clerks discuss the nominations (which is what is currently occurring). I think nominations should stay in the queue for a few days to allow for responses, before they are moved to the accepted queue; I'm not that opinionated about a hard number threshold for supporters. I don't have an issue with placing AlwaysLearning at the top of the queue, as it follows our intent to award recipients in chronological order of the nominations. However, I disagree that it looks bad for there to be a gap between the nomination and award; it takes some time for a smooth procedure to be worked out, and no one should be expecting to receive this recognition. isaacl (talk) 13:55, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Al is a bit fragile and self-deprecating. I'm not worried about how it looks but more about the feelings of a fellow editor. But, nevermind. User Always Learning is at the top of the Acc Q which is as it should be. ```Buster Seven Talk 16:35, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
moving forward
I suggest the following user/members/clerks are to be considered The Steering Committee: (or should it be The Selection Committee)
  • Go Phightins,
  • Buster7,
  • TheOriginalSoni,
  • Gtwfan52,
  • Amadscientist,
  • and Isaacl. ```Buster Seven Talk 16:47, 18 February 2013 (UTC)
Comments?....
Since no comments, pro or con, have been forthcoming I will table this suggestion. I would point out that the mentioned editors are the workers bees here. I think it is only logical that those actively involved in the first few months of this project should have the final say in regards to any proposed changes to this project. We have seen that editors, of goodwill, sign on as members, but are very limited partners. If, in the future, we have a prime decision to make, I feel it should be decided by a consensus of the worker bees...not by a consensus including the sit-on-the-sidelines bees. Sounds elitist but its not meant to be. The mentioned 6 editors have all been here from the beginning and have been very active and involved. ```Buster Seven Talk 20:41, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
Feb 24 Sunday
Is the award presentation to AlwaysLearning covered by a clerk? Usually, I am either travelling or working on Sunday night. IF you are a member of EotW and you have yet to congratulate a recipient, please do so. It is really quite rewarding!```Buster Seven Talk 07:42, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
I should be able to do so. Go Phightins! 12:00, 23 February 2013 (UTC)
I have notified AL; the infobox and the HOF still need updated. Go Phightins! 13:25, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
#7 Editor of the Week is...
... Always Learning. Take the time to drop by his talk page and offer your congratulations. It helps retain editors (which is our challenge). Who to nominate?
Hey folks. I've just seen that people have been up in arms for ages over whether or not to mark me as Editor of the week. Now, I'm grateful for the thought, but that's a bloody stupid idea. I've just found an editor who seems to not realise what a boon he is to the encyclopedia, how much hard work he does and needs some recognition. Me? I sit and read a few emails and don't even have time to look after my adoptees. I can't remember the last time I really played with an article unless you count my pet project.
I've received more recognition that most people in the community, with a list of Barnstars which is as long as my arm. I've had a silly number of hats, a fair amount of t-shirts and general recognition all round. I'm without a doubt not the sort of editor you're looking for here. It's so important that we get out there and find those people who aren't noticed, who don't make a lot of noise, but just get on and do what we're all meant to be doing - working on the encyclopedia. Don't use this as a tool to curry favour, it's one of the most powerful ways of showing an editor what they're worth. WormTT(talk) 16:02, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
  • My point exactly. Thanks for stopping by! Go Phightins! 20:08, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
@ Worm. If ever we expand our vision and the giving of merchandise is sanctioned, you will be the first in line to get an "EotW Beeniebaseballcap". We hope you will wear it proudly. ..or at least hang it in close proximity to your other "silly number of hats". ```Buster Seven Talk 20:56, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
Editor Worms Nomination
(moved from Nominations talk page by TheOriginalSoni (talk)) If its alright with everyone, on Monday, I am going to remove User:Worm from the accepted Nomination page. This is only temporary until we figure out (and create) a seperate award for nominees that, for one reason or another, stretch the guidelines we have established. ```Buster Seven Talk 08:02, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
I don't think I am alright with it. I would much rather prefer we alter our guidelines appropriately so that we allow all deserving users who contribute to this project in a huge way, but have remained under-appreciated. I believe that was the original primary intention of the award - To recognise those who ought to have received more praise than they did. I firmly believe we ought not be limiting our scope by going on absolute wordings of the guidelines we created for the very purpose. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 06:53, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
Soni. I mis-spoke. What I plan to do is just to move Worm down the list, not remove him totally from the list, giving us time to confer and come up with a solution. ```Buster Seven Talk 07:30, 3 February 2013 (UTC).
Lets simply leave the nominations as they are. If after a week (when we got to choose EotW#5) we still have no solution, we can bypass Worm. I dont see any reason to not bypass Worm, than place him 3-4 weeks down the ladder. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 08:38, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
The situation w/ Worm is going to happen again and again with other nominations down the line. We need a firm position. The clerks will be split right down the middle as to what to do and the clerk that actually despenses the Award will be in a quandry....What to do? We need to have at least ONE guide line that is stable and unchangable. Rule #1--- On Sunday Night the first editor in the Q is awarded the Editor of the Week Award. No bypassing or other re-arranging should take place on Sunday Night. There should be no question as to WHO gets the Award on Sunday Night. Any one of the clerks should be able (next Sunday Night), to go to the top of the list, follow the lead of GoPhightins previous disbursements and KNOW that the correct editor is getting the fifth award. Or the fifty-second award. If this is going to work we can't leave it up to the arbitrary discretion of the clerk that gives out the award. (No intended disdain for your wonderful efforts GoPhightins!} ```Buster Seven Talk 12:55, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
This is exactly what I was getting at last night. And we got it done again! Good Job, us! I want to thank the members of this group that take care of the graphic stuff. It is appreciated. Gtwfan52 (talk) 04:48, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
Please remove the nomination of Worm, it seems quite absurd to me. I guess the nominator can't have been aware of the guidelines: it's supposed to be an honour explicitly bestowed on an editor who's not well-known. Worm's an arbitrator! And he was plenty well known and high profile even before. He's a great guy, but if this award is about to morph into "generally great person of the week", there should surely be a discussion about it on a slightly higher level than in relation to this nomination. Or how about I nominate Newyorkbrad next? Bishonen | talk 16:28, 17 February 2013 (UTC).
It will be removed at the appropriate time...once a final determination by the clerks has been made (which should be shortly).see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Archive 2#Final decision on Worm and on Admins..and the thread below. And a few other places in the EotW archives. Editor Worm's nomination preceeded the inaugurual Award and a discussion has been on-going for quite some time. The next recipient is taken from the top of the Q and I personally move Worm into second position. So...ease your mind. You will not have to nominate NYB ...or yourself for that matter! ```Buster Seven Talk 20:53, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
#8
Notified on their talk; don't have time or patience to write up the infobox, so all I've done is the recipient notification. Go Phightins! 19:24, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
 Done. Do check the infobox sandbox the next time before doing recipient notifications. We keep the infoboxes to be used prepared there. (Alternately, you can also simply read the instructions ;) ) TheOriginalSoni (talk) 08:22, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
Adding a Talk page link in the infobox?
Most of the times, whenever I have to congratulate any recipient, I do so by clicking on his/her name on the infobox. But this always leads me to their page, and not their talk page. I assume there might be others too who might want to be having a link to the Talk page too in the infobox (maybe as a (T) beside the name). See this version to see one of the ways I preferred the Talk page to be displayed.
Any thoughts?
TheOriginalSoni (talk) 08:22, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
I found your proposed version to be visually distracting. The best idea I had for including a link to the recipient's talk page was to place it at the bottom, above the link to the nomination page. Personally, I'm not sure the advantage of having the talk page one click away instead of two warrants the additional text in the infobox, though. isaacl (talk) 14:29, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
Isaacl, you are now required to join this project to edit any project pages or templates. You are also asked to attribute the new template you created recently as a merge of content and design as to not make it appear that you are the sole contributer when you moved the template to a base. This is a requirement at Wikipedia. Failure to attribute is a copyright violation.--Amadscientist (talk) 08:34, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
Could someone cover for me?
I will be AFK tomorrow, so if someone could do my normal job of barnstarring the recipient, I'd appreciate it. Go Phightins! 04:02, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
I'll give it a shot within the next 2 hours. ```Buster Seven Talk 04:38, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
On a similar subject, effective St. Patrick's Day, my internet access will be at best sporadic, and at times non existent. So, at least for now, I am asking that someone else step in at editor of the week and help out. When things improve, I will be happy to resume any duties you feel I am capable of, but I really don't know when that will be. I appreciate your understanding and want to say that it has been a pleasure working with you all getting this going. Thanks for the opportunity. Keep up the good work, and I will drop by whenever I can. Gtwfan52 (talk) 05:13, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
Our door (Wait!....Do we have a door?) will always be open to you Gfan. I'll do my best tomorrow to get User:Bleaney their Banner. ```Buster Seven Talk 07:34, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
Barnstar used in recipient notification
I had thought that the barnstar used in the recipient notification message and other places (user box, infobox, and on this page) was custom-created for this initiative, but I see now on Wikipedia:Barnstars that it is The Red Barnstar, "awarded to users who have created a new, "revolutionary" policy in Wikipedia." I think it would be better to have a specific barnstar for Editor of the Week, and not appropriate another barnstar. Can anyone create an original barnstar? isaacl (talk) 16:07, 6 March 2013 (UTC)
Hi, I just came over here to thank you all once again - I still can't believe I was nominated but I really don't seem to have dreamed it as it's still on my talk/user page this morning - Go Phightins! suggested I could nominate someone else, so I'd come over here to put BlueMoonset forward as I feel they are far worthier than me. The work undertaken by BlueMoonset, particularly at DYK, can only be described as phenomenal, I don't think she/he ever sleeps! Needless to say, I'm delighted to see a nomination is already in place. Recepients Responses
Some of the responses we are getting are very special. Whenever I wonder if what we are doing has value I just take a look at Wikepedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Recepients comments and I am stimulated to find the next nominee. Question: Can someone "connect" the Rec-com page to the other EotW pages? Thanks in advance. ```Buster Seven Talk 21:46, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks so Much, Soni. Looks great! ```Buster Seven Talk 07:28, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
EotW new logo at the infobox
Hello,
This is just to inform that until the new infobox is ready to be used, I have simply replaced the red barnstar with the new EotW logo. Please do tell whether or not you like it. Some size alteration etc may be required.
TheOriginalSoni (talk) 07:57, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
Don't like the dark navy background against the new logo.--Amadscientist (talk) 07:59, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
I had some similar concerns. Could you help in editing the infobox so it looks better? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 08:15, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
I like whatever you guys do. Nad if I dont, i'll tell ya. Burp! ```Buster Seven Talk 08:20, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
I have left the project. Not at all interested in being the third person requested for help on the template I designed. Just delete it and start over, replace it or burn it. I really don't care any more.--Amadscientist (talk) 08:24, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
AutomaticStrikeout created this WikiProject to award all editors, and not just new ones. But from this MfD, it looks like it might get deleted. I talked with AS on his talk page and he said he would be open to having this Project continue closely along/under EotW.
I personally would like it if EotW could be open to all people, and not just new editors. So I support the idea of taking HoF as a sister project, and working closely on it under the EotW banner, under similar terms. WHat do others think of it? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 15:36, 21 March 2013 (UTC)
I would oppose this. If the project is deleted, the community has decided they don't want it to exist, not that they want it to exist somewhere else. It also doesn't meet the goals of this project, which is specifically to give recognition to editors who don't normally receive recognition. (I'll also note that many (most?) of the editors who are labelled EotW have been around longer than me, so it's not just about new editors) Ryan Vesey 15:46, 21 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm a little taken aback that some other ediotrs @ the MfD are so strident and limited in their willingness to express thanks to fellow editors. 'Cause that's really what we are doing....saying "Thanks for taking your time to improve the Encyclopedia". So...yes...as a way to save a great idea I would be Ok with it. I don't thing half-a-dozen nay-sayers at an out-of the-way page should speak for the community. We would have to do some alterations and name-changing but I wouldn't be against it...as long as it didn't interfere with our basic goal which should remain the EotW Award.```Buster Seven Talk 15:57, 21 March 2013 (UTC)
I tend to agree with Ryan on this one. I think it would probably detract from our primary goal: recognizing under-appreciated editors. There's no reason people cannot keep their personal halls of fame (hall of fames?), but I think that is not necessarily in line with our goals here. Maybe under a broader WER, but not at EotW. Go Phightins! 19:09, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
I would support it under WER. Ryan Vesey 19:34, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
(;~}....User:Deb doesnt get Editor of the Week even though she is the best admin youve Never seen. Now...although nominated...she wont be able to get into the Wikipedia Hall of Fame because it will never get built. What's Next? No Bingo Night??? ```Buster Seven Talk 19:47, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
I'm not so sure that the Hall of Fame will be deleted. Ryan Vesey 19:52, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
New Barnstar (and infoboxes)
Hi, here's my idea for the barnstar—
Pieces represent "wikipedia collaboration", the radial skew represents the cyclic nature of the award. Most of it is shades of barnstar bronze/gold, the red represents that it's a distinction (and a vestige of the old "Red Barnstar", except I didn't like the crimson, so I made it raspberry). I suppose it also looks like a figure bestowing an award/taking a bow.
Hate it, start over! LOL! I am soooo joking. This is superb work. I love the representation, the simplicity and the originality! It has a quality that lends towards an immediate recognition and will stick in people's minds very well. Excellent work sir!--Amadscientist (talk) 02:31, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
  • Support - I hope this is something everyone can jump on board and agree with.--Amadscientist (talk) 02:34, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
A side note. This logo should be next to Editor of the Week and not next to Project Editor retention, unless we want to share the logo and propose it to the main project....which isn't a bad idea, but that is up to the consensus here to make the proposal and the main group to accept it.--Amadscientist (talk) 02:56, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
  • Really nice design, like the fonts as well. Question on colours - while I think these are aesthetically fine, the red for me signals stop. Is it possible to do a blue/green pallette? Or maybe a progression from red to blue (redlink to bluelink)? Just throwing this out there, I don't oppose the current style. The Interior (Talk) 03:12, 16 March 2013 (UTC) Support
Thanks for the comments. But RED also says..."notice me", plus red has a history (short that it is) of the banner, ```Buster Seven Talk 03:22, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
  • Support - I am so glad I suggested Kelvin to be our first EotW. Absolutely love the design. Looks out of the world as usual. I wonder if Kevin could choose a quick palette of optional combination of colours we could take, if that is not too much of a problem. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 17:45, 16 March 2013 (UTC)
  • This is very nice. I, like TOS, would appreciate seeing perhaps a blue version, if only to compare. —Theopolisme (talk) 03:36, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
  • Could we have isaac here? I really would like to discuss the infobox redesign with him, and implement it for our next EotW. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 07:42, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
    • Don't have much more to say than "Well done!" to Kelvinsong for the new barnstar, recipient notification message, and infobox! isaacl (talk) 03:47, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
      • We ought to be including this new design for our infobox. But I was hesitant to try it before checking with you. (Also, our logo must be near EotW, not WER). So I suggest we switch to this new design as soon as possible. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 05:06, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
Would someone please transfer these templates documentation to the places of the old templates? Thanks; that way I don't have to copy-paste out of this section every time. I would do it myself, but I'm afraid I would mess it up. Thanks! Go Phightins! 23:25, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
INFOBOX distribution
The info box for BlueMoonset has not been delivered. If I do it , it will get messed up. Comment: We may want to consider this slight delay between Sunday Award and Wednesday Infobox as a permenant part of the process The info box is dramatic and distributing it MID-Week will rekindle those fires of "We want to acknowledge your efforts. What do my fellow clerks ( of which there are fewer and fewer) think??? Thanks. ```Buster Seven Talk 12:58, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
  • If infoboxes are ready on Sunday afternoon, I can deliver them with the banner if necessary...Go Phightins! 19:06, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
Thanks GoP. You can find the next batch of Infoboxes for Future EOtW's at the sandbox. Soni has been creating them in advance. If that continues, they should be good to go on Sunday. It's just the 3 of us, basically but thats OK. Fewer chefs to season 'the stew". ```Buster Seven Talk 19:23, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
Okey dokey. I will try to remember to add that infobox when I add the banner. If I forget, beat me over the head with a wet trout or something. Go Phightins! 19:28, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
Lake Michigan has a nice Lake Trout.. Ive got one in the freezer, but I don't think I'll need it. ```Buster Seven Talk 19:49, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
I may need to borrow that early if my writing stays as flat as it is right now; I can barely understand what I just wrote on The Crucible and how it pertains to 1950s America...luckily it's not due for almost a week, but unluckily this is Easter weekend and I'd prefer to only be stewing over prose related to Wei-Yin Chen which is my project for the weekend. Go Phightins! 19:56, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
My new thing is McCormick Family Mansions of Chicago or it will be something like that. Its in a sandbox and I jiggle it around every now and then. Still collecting research. Happy Eazster season. BlueMoonset's Infobox
BlueMoonset still has not received it. I have tried but can't get it to look right. Can someone get this done before the next award is handed out. BTW...no harm done if the next Award is handed out a day early or late. with the easter/passover situation.```Buster Seven Talk 06:16, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
  • Sorry, I didn't read this about waiting until BlueMoonset had received an infobox. I have notified Surtsicna and I remembered to post her infobox. Go Phightins! 23:30, 30 March 2013 (UTC)
Request
I found the following comment by User:Anna Frodesiak (third in the Q) while researching her nomination:
I try to help folks out. I talk to vandals and ask them to behave
and would love to have it included in our infobox when the time comes for her award. It's so clear an explanation of everything a vandal-fighter wants;...for vandals to behave, and to attain their "real" potential. ```Buster Seven Talk 18:23, 19 March 2013 (UTC)  Done```Buster Seven Talk 14:50, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
I am a little bit full at the moment, and may not be able to make all the infoboxes for future editors. If you've researched the editors beforehand, why not try making the infoboxes at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page/sandbox? I can do a quick run-through with them to make sure they are in order. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 07:54, 20 March 2013 (UTC)
I will not be making ANY infoboxes. I'll edit them, but I won't make them.```Buster Seven Talk 19:50, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
I'll be unavailable
Hello,
I have been having a really poor net connection for the last few days and I think I will not be getting a change to get to a good computer for a while now. I really hope someone will step in to make and give away the infobox for Anna and Anne. If there are any technical problems for later, I'll look into it whenever I can come back.
If anyone can contact Amadscientist or isaacl to help with it, please do so.
Cheers, TheOriginalSoni (talk) 05:13, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
Good Luck. Editor GoP and I will "hold down the fort". ```Buster Seven Talk 14:52, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
Switch from template to box or..
Use both? I am adding the box to the community portal. I would like to either switch from the current template to the box form I proposed some time back:
Surtsicna edits articles primarily related to Royal Families and nobility
One of the many silent workers on Wikipedia, Surtsicna has been an example for all of Wikipedia through his ceaseless editing without a single page about himself. His 30000+ article edits and 140+ articles created speak volumes about his dedication to the project. His articles are based primarily on Medieval nobility and royal families and have been the focus of over 40 DYKs. His simple talk page showcases the humility of the type of underappreciated editor who forms the backbone of this encyclopedia.
If the box can be spaced out, it might be good. But as they currently stand, I like the infobox. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 13:01, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
The template is too long for the Community portal but is fine for WER. But, I need the tighter version to allow the most information. We can edit it to be closer to the template with major contributions etc.--Amadscientist (talk) 13:55, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
Could you format it as a template, like the infobox. I am hesitant to try changing anything on this one, lest i should break something. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 02:05, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Can anyone confirm BlueMoonset's gender?
I am not really sure if our next EotW BlueMoonset is male or female. Can anyone just figure that part out before we award him/her? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks, TheOriginalSoni (talk) 20:21, 21 March 2013 (UTC)
  • I've asked around. No one seems to know for sure. Some "guess" female. ```Buster Seven Talk 08:41, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
  • Why is gender an issue?--Amadscientist (talk) 08:43, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
It is for the infobox. If I dont know the gender, it leads to awkward re-repeating of the name, or usage of "them". Him/her looks more personal. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 08:50, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
    • BTW...Whomever does BlueMoon's infobox should include Sagacious Phil's comments about "her". ```Buster Seven Talk 08:41, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
Infoboxes
The infoboxes are not getting updated in their different locations. Of course, the one we give the AwardEE is Ok but the rest still show the previous weeks recepient. Take a look at the one on this page as I type. It still has last weeks AwardEE. I thought that the set-up was for the infobox (in various locations) to change once the Award was dispensed (Sunday night in most cases).
We might need to have a discussion about who does what.
  • User GoP dispenses the Award on Sunday night (if possible. Not set in stone since we clerks set up the delivery time. He will let B7 or Soni know if there is a problem)
  • User Soni monitors and manages all the aspects of the infobox.
  • User The Wikimon notifies the Nominator AFTER the award is given.
  • User B7 monitors the new nominations and "THE Q"/sells the EotW project here and there/keeps other WER members informed about EotW.
  • All the registered clerks visit the Current Recepients talk page to offer congratulations. (More involvement here should be happening. It is a pleasure to read the many thoughts and sharings. If you are not doing this, you don't know what you are missing!)
  • Since we began we have had a bit of a clerk turnover for various reasons. Of course we can all assist each other and no one will be thought less of if things don't go 100%. I just think it's best for the project if we all have our chores and we all know who is doing what. Not to check up....just to know. Thoughts??? ```Buster Seven Talk 16:45, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
  • User Soni says he is finding it really hard to keep track of all the infoboxes out there, especially due to a major unavailablity problem. Could a clerk give a hand in doing so?
Also, GoP, please also edit the project main page with the latest recipient whenever you award the infobox to the recipient.
Cheers,
R and R Team
If anyone is interested, I have attempted to re-start the R and R Team. Users Gandydancer and John Carter seem to have been the only two members of the now defunct team that responded back in mid-2012....and had a short discussion. Please see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Editor Retention/Retention and return team. I think those two editors may still be interested...let's wait and see. ```Buster Seven Talk 11:53, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
  • I have approached our Local Banner design guy, User:Kelvinsong (the very first EotW), to design a banner/logo for the R and R team. ```Buster Seven Talk 11:57, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Since no one has responded, for the moment there does not seem to be much interest in reviiving this project. Move it to the back burner but keep it at low flame. I was able to convince User:Petrarchan03 to unretire and return to editing. ```Buster Seven Talk 20:43, 21 April 2013 (UTC)
I gave her the banner, not the infobox since I was still unsure what the deal was on that... Go Phightins! 17:15, 14 April 2013 (UTC)
It was nice to see Tomobe's EOTW citation appear in the Signpost this week alongside the interview (and kudos to everybody on a good interview, too!). What would you think about asking the Signpost if they would regularly include the Editor of the Week citation? Perhaps it could appear as a sidebar in the News and Notes section. If the Signpost is up for it, it'd be a great way to get more publicity for those being honored for a minimal amount of extra work. -- Khazar2 (talk) 14:52, 25 April 2013 (UTC)
Since GoP has handed out most of the Awards, the distribution time of day is pretty much up to him. The Awardees dont care if they get it Sunday or Monday or early Thusday morning. Sunday night was just a line in the sand. User GoP can move the line whenever and to wherever he wants. I'm very glad you keep working on fine tuning the Award and the infobox. ```Buster Seven Talk 23:06, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
The new design has caused way more problems than expected. We've barely managed to marginally solve one of them after working an hour. It would be really nice if Amadscientist or isaacl (our templates specialists) could come over and inspect the new templates, and modify them as necessary. There are still issues to be resolved (For example, the new template works without breaking the HoF only when align right is removed. Also the edit word in the talk page keeps coming very close to the template). Design and looks wise, I am sure the template needs a lot of improvement. Feel free to edit as necessary. We might need some/a lot of help before we add the template to the current recipient's page. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 00:30, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Re:Favorite Image
  • Under the guise of curiosity, I approached Delawaves and asked which of his many images was his favorite. This was his response.
Hi! That's a very interesting question, and pretty hard to answer, since I lose track of the images I upload pretty quickly.
One I can think of is Billy Beane – it's not a particularly great image, but I uploaded it soon before Moneyball, the movie based on him, was released, which meant that when his page started getting lots of traffic, there was a photo to greet the readers. I just took a look through my photos and came across this one, which I thought was beautiful. I also got a whole set of great color photos of Crosley Field, a baseball park in Cincinnati. There are a million other baseball-related images that I was very proud of, that I can't think of at the moment.
Just curious: is there any image or set of images in particular that led you to wonder this? I'm glad the images are getting noticed! Thanks a lot for your note! User:Delaywaves|Delaywaves • User talk:Delaywaves|talk 03:28, 29 April 2013 (UTC) END
Do we know you? How did you get the secret password for the workshop? O...Wait>>>>I'm beginning to remember. :~)....nice to hear from you. Yes, we have kept the ship afloat awaiting your return. The deck needs to be ""swabbed"", so hurry back!! ```Buster Seven Talk 05:51, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
A word of warning
The new notifications system notifies users when they are mentioned (by being linked to) on talk pages (at least). This provides the potential for the cat getting out of the bag here, so I thought I'd make sure y'all are aware of that. AutomaticStrikeout (TCSign AAPT) 13:59, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
Good warning,AS. So..let it be known through-out the kingdom of Editor of the Week, thou shall NEVER link a future User that is being discussed for an award. The penalty for failing to adhere to this edict will be.....um...well, it won't be nice whatever it is. Let's keep the cat in the bag. If you see a nmomination or a discussion and the editor inadvertantly links to the nominNEE, please unlink right away. Thank You,```Buster Seven Talk 05:52, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
I took the liberty of altering Delaywares signature above. Even tho it was a copy from my talk page, his name and talk page were bracketed, so he probably got a notification. DRATS!```Buster Seven Talk 06:00, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
I also took the liberty of altering mention of user diatvian above a few threads. Please try to do your own clean-up. Im not the janitor around here. ```Buster Seven Talk 06:52, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
  • Auto, how do we attatch this warning to the bottom so that editors will see it before they make their entry? ```Buster Seven Talk 12:35, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
Please do not link to the nominee's user or talk page. The new notification system will inform them of their nominationt and spoil the surprise.
    • Buster, we need an admin to create a page notice that says this in big letters. Oh User:Dennis Brown, are you out there? Go Phightins! 16:34, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
  • I prettied up the code and prose, then added it here [2]. Didn't know that only admin can do that. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 17:19, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
    • Actually, I think it may be only admin who can do that in article space...I did one for my user page, and I wasn't sure about WP space, so I figured better safe than sorry :) Thanks! Go Phightins! 17:38, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
      • No worries. I didn't even know what a page notice was before I became an admin, never paid it any attention. Good thing no one asked about them at my RfA. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 17:58, 5 May 2013 (UTC)
        • Ive posted the warning template on all the appropriate pages. If i missed any please make sure they get a notice. A part of the effectivness of the Award is the surprise factor. ```Buster Seven Talk 06:26, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
    • Actually, both admins and account creators can create page notices. The Anonymouse (talk | contribs) 16:30, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
A Basic Membership Task
Visiting the Editor of the Week's talk page the day after to offer congratulations
Template Instructions for INFOBOX
Placing the current infobox on the recipient's talk page is as straightforward as awarding a barnstar. Copy  to the recipient's talk page (this instruction is present on Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page). Copying the prepared infobox from the sandbox to the "Project main page" page is a bit more tricky, but also straightfoward. Taking the current sandbox as an example:
Infoboxes for future Editors of the Week
Dismas
clear
Copy the content from . Note the clear is not copied, nor is the heading with the recipient's name. Looking at the current "Project main page":
<noinclude><!--
DO NOT MOVE OR RETITLE TEMPLATE. ITS INTENTION IS THE MAINPAGE OF EDITOR RETENTION
DO NOT REMOVE DOCUMENTATION AND DO NOT ADD CLEAR TEMPLATE!
--></noinclude>
<noinclude>
documentation
</noinclude>
Paste the copied content between the </noinclude> and <noinclude> statements, replacing everything from
Note although I described the easier task first, they should be done in the reverse order: first you update the "Project main page" page, and then you place the infobox on the recipient's talk page. Also, you should remove the draft infobox from the sandbox page, so the next one in line will now be ready at the top of the sandbox page.
Updating the Hall of Fame page is done in the same way as placing the infobox on the recipient's talk page, but for a prettier layout, it is done within a 3-column table, so some attention has to be paid to that. If I get the chance, I'll describe that too. isaacl (talk) 15:26, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
User to be nominated
User:Disavian is one deserving user who should be nominated. Can someone nominate him/get anyone known to him to do the nomination? TheOriginalSoni (talk) 21:52, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
Why dont you nominate him? ```Buster Seven Talk 23:34, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
I am not exactly familiar with him or the way our nominations are done. Also, I might have to make the infobox, and I did not want both to have the same blurb. But most importantly, I was slightly lazyish, and hoped somebody could do that. Hope you understand :) TheOriginalSoni (talk) 23:45, 26 April 2013 (UTC)
I'm not familiar with most of the Nominations I have done. Nominating cant be easier. You go to the page, follow simple instructions and nominate. Actually, I dont understand. ```Buster Seven Talk 05:29, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
Sunday/Monday/Tuesday tasks
Hey Gfan, welcome back. One little step you could take on is notifying the NominaTOR that the Award has been distributed. This should be our first contact with the nomiinaTOR. Possible friendly stalking at the Nominators talk page prevents us from communicating with them before then. I'm sure they will want to say some additoional things. This weeks nominmator is GoP so it won't be necessary. Let me or GoP know if you are the 'Remind the Nominator' guy. ```Buster Seven Talk 23:12, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
Sure, that's me. Just refresh my memory on when and where to look for who. Gtwfan52 (talk) 23:21, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
GoP usually distributes the Award on Sunday. If you go to the "Q" you will see who the nominaTOR was. Just drop them a reminder about their nomination (it may have been months ago), thank them, let them know it was rewarded, suggest they give a congrats' and, while you're at it, maybe let them know that we are always looking for new nominations. Thanks Gfan. Glad yur back! ```Buster Seven Talk 00:41, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
So when will the new winner come out? It is Sunday evening here on the west coast. Gtwfan52 (talk) 00:53, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
Next week. This weeks nominator is User:GoP. The reminder/thanks etc can be done on Monday....no problem. In fact lets lock into that. Sunday=Award/User:GoP, Monday=Notify Nominator/User:Gfan, Tuesday=Dispense Infobox/User:Buster7. ```Buster Seven Talk 01:49, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
We'll call that a motion. I second. All in favor say aye? "Aye" Opposed nay? (deafening silence) The motion passes 2–0 to make this an official EotW administrative procedure. Go Phightins! 02:01, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Make that 3-0. Sounds good to me. On another topic, does anyone agree with me that this new Wikipedia notification system (Echo?) is a giant step backwards? Gtwfan52 (talk) 02:04, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
Being of an elderly persuasion, I don't embrace change. I looked forward to the orange "you have a message" bar since I'm not a troublemaker and so it usually was a good message. I'll give it time and I'm sure I will adapt but I'm not a big supporter.```Buster Seven Talk 05:55, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
NOTE:Mondays notification is not necessary since most awards come with the nominators linked and being notified via the new Echo ("What was that?") system....which means that Gfan has nothing to do on Mondays. ```Buster Seven Talk 21:26, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
HELP!
Editor Dismas's Infobox is not included in the Hall of Fame. In spite of Isaacl's clear instructions, I just can't get it right. The problem, I think, is that I already moved Dismas to the archives at the Template page and I don't know the easiest way to retreave him. Also, #17(Editor Closeapple) did not get an Infobox until today...2 days late. ```Buster Seven Talk 13:07, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
No ping template
Hey guys, it's a nice WikiProject here. Anyway, there is a way to mention userpages without notifying the editors. Template:noping can do that. For instance Buster7 will give Buster7, but Buster is not notified. Hope this helps. Mohamed CJ (talk) 19:42, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks Mohamed. It's the solution we were looking for. To the other clerks: Where should we notify our visitors/nominators of this? On every ER page? Maybe we should change the big RED notification on all our pages in order to pass on this useful tool? ```Buster Seven Talk 19:02, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea. Go Phightins! 19:07, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
I was going to change it, but as it turns out, we need an admin or an account creator ... why account creators are allowed, I don't know, but hey Dennis, can you spare us a moment from your harassing Drmies about harassment to update the edit notice which can be found here with the noping info, please? Thanks. Go Phightins! 16:28, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
Write out here what you want it to say, ping me again, and I will paste it. Dennis Brown |  | © | WER 17:08, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
Something like, below the big notice, Alternatively, you may use the No-Ping template. For instance Go Phightins! generates Go Phightins!, but Go Phightins! does not recieve a notification. How is that, Dennis Brown? Go Phightins! 17:36, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
My weakness with tool manipulation and my forgetfulness both show up in these situations, While I remember having taken part in creating the Big Red Banner Warning Sign at the front door, I have spent the last 1/2 hour searching for how to incorporate Mohameds "noping" advice, and I'm stuck. EotW Hall of Fame
Can someone please add Users Petrarchan and Cerebellum to the Hall of Fame. This needs to be done on a weekly basis by someone competent. I keep trying but I just don't get how. ```Buster Seven Talk 05:23, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
  • Hey Buster,
I've fixed it. Also, for future reference, here is how-
Every three weeks, a new line of three EotW boxes will need to be added. To do that, simply copy paste the following [Without the "nowiki" tags] -
Copy whatever is inside this for a new line
|- style="vertical-align: top;" |<!-- uncomment the following in order to include the latest infobox --><!----> |<!-- uncomment the following in order to include the latest infobox --><!----> |<!-- uncomment the following in order to include the latest infobox --><!---->
Also, every week, you need to subst the current EotW. To do that, remove the following-
Remove this part
|<!-- uncomment the following in order to include the latest infobox --><!-- and -->
from this entire line
|<!-- uncomment the following in order to include the latest infobox --><!---->
To leave this
|
Then just save to get it working.
Hope it makes sense now.
My availability
Attention User:Buster7, User:TheOriginalSoni, User:Gtwfan52, User:Amadscientist, User:Hahc21, User:David1217, User:The Interior, User:Status, and User:Dennis Brown (you must all love notifications ): I have been awarding the recipients every Sunday, and will be able to do so this week, but after that, I will not be able to do so for almost the entire month of July due to various items in my personal life which will leave me with varying degrees of internet access ranging from minimal to none whatsoever. Consequently, I need one or several of you to take that over in the coming few weeks until August, when I will be back in earnest. Thank you to those who already have helped with this great project, and to those who have not yet, maybe this is your opportunity. Sincerest regards, Go Phightins! 02:50, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
I have to decline. If the blasted rural electricity isn't frying my computer, it seems like something keeps me from being available with any predictability. I really wish I could. Gtwfan52 (talk) 02:53, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
I can't as my availability is going to be very thin on the weekends. I had been hoping to get more people involved in the program by now, to make things like this less of an issue :/ Dennis Brown |  | © | WER 08:31, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
I can take this on until you're back, Go Phightins. Just to confirm what's needed - take the next editor from the accepted nominations page (Chiswick Chap is next, right?), fill out the template with some details and an image, deliver with copy of nomination statement, and add to Hall of Fame - anything missing? The Interior (Talk) 22:31, 23 June 2013 (UTC)
That's exactly it ... the recipient notification template is linked on the main EotW page. If you have any questions, User:Buster7 will be around, I believe, and can help. We welcome all the help we can get :-). Thanks for the notification; I completely forgot to award Chiswick Chap, but will do so now ... after that, however, it's all you and Buster . Thanks! Go Phightins! 22:41, 23 June 2013 (UTC)
No problem, I'll ping Buster or post here if I have any issues. Good luck with your July! The Interior (Talk) 00:03, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
Thanks a bunch, Interior. If you need me I'll be right over there. ```Buster Seven Talk 01:54, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
Another attention goes out to User:Buster7, User:TheOriginalSoni, User:Gtwfan52, User:Amadscientist, User:Hahc21, User:David1217, User:The Interior, User:Status, and User:Dennis Brown. We are the self-identified clerks. EotW is a great project, and to those who have yet to congratulate our Awardees, maybe this is your opportunity. Editors like Chiswick deserve at least a little bit of our time considering all they do to improve the encyclopedia.```Buster Seven Talk 11:41, 24 June 2013 (UTC)
I'm not likely to be very active anymore, so I'll remove my name from the project. David1217 What I've done 13:55, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
EotW criteria
When we as a group started brainstorming and putting together the criteria for the Editor of the Week award, we all agreed that it should be for the un-sung, un-acknowleged editors that work here. We seem to have drifted just a bit off-course and I wonder if we should do some corrective maneuvers so that our Original Purpose doesn't get lost and we become a glorified barnstar. So far, except for some Admin nominations we have rubber-stamped every nomination. Not a problem so far except for all the rubber-stamp ink on my hands. Here is the rub. I was working on the infobox for next weeks recipient and I noticed that he had about two dozen barnstars. Again, not a problem. He is a hard working editor that deserves everyone of them and probably more. Its been twenty weeks (or so) since we started. Maybe it would be a good idea to have another brainstorming session with Dennis and whatever clerks show up. In no way do I want to rescind Chiswicks nomination or put a hold on his Award. He deserves it and he should get it. We just need to be sure that we are all on the same page moving forward and that our original idea which was a bright light doesn't dim over time. Maybe I need to be stricter with seconding nominations. Maybe we need a Nominations Patroller who will gather the interested parties to discuss a non-conforming nomination. For sure we need to get more editors to volunteer as clerks so that the entire workload doesn't fall on two or three editors. Please let me know what you think. ```Buster Seven Talk 12:39, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
  • I propose we send an invite to WER members, and everyone who was previously associated with EotW. TheOriginalSoni (talk) 13:40, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
    • I agree. Whenever the invites go out (let's wait till August when GoPhil gets back), we should also invite ALL the past recepients. ```Buster Seven Talk 14:46, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
      • Until we reach a time when there are substantially more nominations than weeks to fill them, it is difficult to do much filtering. I don't think having barnstars should be a bar to being editor of the week, although there is a preference to pick people who are less noticed. Dennis Brown |  | © | WER 15:35, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
Hi guys
Haven't been around lately. Limited time and no assurance of being able to stay online for any given period. I wanted to point out though, that the use of the Academy Award in the Editor of the week box may be a violation of image use policy as the image is of a trademarked work. I also note that the US does not have freedom of panorama on art and if the sculpture is still protected by copyright, the image itself is a violation of copyright. Better to cover ourselves and change out the image as it links to several prominent pages, including the Community portal.--Amadscientist (talk) 17:51, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, Amad. Ive taken your advice and changed the image to the Nebraska State Seal an early Olympic symbol. Always nice to see you.....! ```Buster Seven Talk 19:23, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
Good move Buster. I don't know how that passed by Commons but I had it Speedy Deleted. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has a clear copyright on the statue that they have held since 1929.--Amadscientist (talk) 04:59, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
This weeks Editor of the Week for a couple more days. Lets all take a break from trying to figure out what incivility looks like (at the Project main page) and do something civil...congratulate Editor Ammodramus. Since EotW started about a 1/2 year ago, we have always had a total of at least 6 Editors either in the Q or waiting to be seconded. When the next editor gets awarded this coming Sunday, we will have only 4. ```Buster Seven Talk 20:17, 1 August 2013 (UTC)
This was a great idea (not mine) when it started but it requires weekly (or is it tri-weekly) updating. We are now 6 EotW's behind (Editors Lugnuts and Ammodramus). Isnt there someway where the latest Infobox can get added to the Hall of Fame and no-one needs to monitor the result? Thanks. ```Buster Seven Talk 14:46, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
Ok, that is a good idea. And thinking about it, the bot operation needed is a copy operation to an "archive" page. The Hall of Fame page being the archive landing. It has to be located somewhere where the change is being made so I believe that would be the main template and requires some form of trigger like a checked box, or status update similar to the way the bot archives DR/N cases when the status is changed to close. Let me speak to that bot operator and see if this is something he thinks can be done. In the mean time I suggest asking around for agood Wiki gnome and see if anyone is interested in building a new bot for us. Perhaps someone can persuade User:Equazcion if they are able to do such work.--Amadscientist (talk) 18:43, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
EotW Hall of Fame
The last submission to the Hall of Fame was Editor Indian Chronicles back in mid-August. Someone needs to take on (even if only temporary) the responsibility of getting the weekly editors submitted. While the Hall of Fame was a great idea (not mine) at the time it began, I foresaw that it would require the efforts of "someone". If no one steps forward the Hall will become out-dated and useless and we might as well shut the door. It's not a hard task, it just takes someone to DO it. ```Buster Seven Talk 14:42, 20 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for trying, Phil. I said it wasn't hard, but it is complicated. I don't get it myself even tho other clerks have tried to explain it to me.!! I have asked User:Equazcion on his talk page ((@ Simplifying additions to EotW Hall of Fame)) to simplify the process, if possible. Simplifying additions to EotW Hall of Fame
  • Moved from Editor Equzcion's talk page
Your name came up as someone that might help @ the above page. The current system of adding Award recipient's is difficult for those of us that are challenged by syntax. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Archive 2#EotW Hall of Fame shows instructions but it has been suggested that there must be a simpler way. One that is easier for editors with limited "back page skills". The editors that set up the Hall of Fame have moved on and I am at a loss as to how to add new Awardees. It just seems that there must be a different, AND BETTER, way to do this. Back in July, Editor Amadscientist suggested....
  • And thinking about it, the bot operation needed is a copy operation to an "archive" page. The Hall of Fame page being the archive landing. It has to be located somewhere where the change is being made so I believe that would be the main template and requires some form of trigger like a checked box, or status update similar to the way the bot archives DR/N cases when the status is changed to close. Any ideas? ```Buster Seven Talk 13:37, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
Taking a quick look I'm not sure exactly how what's going on there :) If your hall of fame thing really requires a bot then I'm probably the wrong person, but I'll see if maybe there's a feasible template or userscript method to make things easier. I'll need to take a closer look when I have some time. I just started this archiver script project thingy that may take me a wee bit of time to get smoothed out and is kinda sorta important (since people are starting to use it much faster than I anticipated), but I'll keep this in mind and let you know if I can come up with something. equazcion 14:21, 21 Oct 2013 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Looks like multiple methods of archiving have been used. User:Buster7, what about using subpages for each awardee and then transcluding the templates in a simple wikitable?
It would look like this..
This method would make editting the article easier and would require less code on the hall of fame article so it would look cleaner. However, since I'm not familiar with how the current method works I may be "reading" this wrong. Are the infoboxes that are displayed on that article used anywhere else in the project? Or are they created / used solely for the Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Hall of Fame? Regards, —  dainomite   14:38, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
I did something similar to what Dainomite suggested, just with a tweak. I plopped the whole table structure for the next couple of months down on the hall of fame page, with a bunch of #ifexist statements. They point to Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page/Archive 1 and so forth. I tested this with /Archive 0, where I pasted the editor of the week currently on Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page, and it seems to have worked. You can give it a try on /Archive 1, if you have someone else to put up there -- Once a /Archive # page exists with content in it, the content should show up at the hall of fame page automatically.
So basically, for the future, if you decide to use this method, you would simple copy/paste the template on the main page to the next archive number. That would basically be the only step.
If this seems acceptable I can put more of that table structure on the hall of fame page to handle more of the future archives. Ideally this should be done by a bot, but I don't do bots. There are other methods, but the structure of that hall of fame page doesn't lend itself to simple template solutions (barring some module coding, which I'm far from an expert at yet). Anyway I hope that helps. equazcion 17:49, 21 Oct 2013 (UTC)
Thanks to both of you for your time and ideas....They help a lot in creating an "easy-to-use-anybody-can-do-it" solution. Of course, the preferred solution would be automatic inclusion into the Hall. Will that happen with either of the above??
In answer to Dianomites question, and just so you both know what the current process is.... 1)In preparation for and in advance of future weeks-to-come EotW's I go to Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page/sandbox and start to create a userbox. The idea is that they get the award on Sunday and then late Monday or Tuesday, I give them a Userbox..... 2)On Sunday, after User:Go Phightins! gives them the Award, I copy-n-paste the appropriate userbox from the sandbox to Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page and the user box is displayed at the WP:WER main page and elsewhere. (I'm not sure where). But, the awardee's page is not included since the project main page template will change every week. .. 3)So, usually on Tuesday, I go to that weeks EotW and give them a permanent Userbox.
A look at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Archive 2#EotW Hall of Fame shows that User:sagaciousphil kindly offered his assistance but ran into trouble, just as I do every time I try to include the Userbox into the Hall of Fame. The previous set up, prior to equazcion's changes, always left me scratching my almost bald head. ```Buster Seven Talk 18:23, 21 October 2013 (UTC).
My solution isn't automatic, just simplified. Assuming I understand how this works, you don't need to touch the hall of fame page at all. When it comes time to put something new there, just paste it to a new archive under Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page -- for example, Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page/Archive 1, Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page/Archive 2, or whichever one you happen to be up to that week. Once you paste a user's award there it will show up in the hall of fame page automatically. I hope that makes sense. equazcion 18:33, 21 Oct 2013 (UTC)
 Done We are caught up thanks to Editor Equazcion's new method. ```Buster Seven Talk 20:46, 21 October 2013 (UTC)
Please remove
I cannot in good faith be recognized for the actions that I was previously nominated and enshrined for. Please strike my name from the record of this "award".—Ryulong (琉竜) 14:20, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
I'd say it's your right to remove yourself, but out of curiosity, why do you want to? -- Khazar2 (talk) 14:34, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
You've not been looking at WP:ANI have you? And I only ask someone do it for me because I can't for the life of me figure out how to get rid of the archive version in the "Hall of fame" page.—Ryulong (琉竜) 14:40, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
Oh, it requires the deletion of Template:WikiProject Editor Retention/Editor of the Week/Project main page/Archive 8.—Ryulong (琉竜) 14:49, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
Hi Ryu, I haven't--I make it a point to avoid that page except when absolutely necessary. I'm sorry to see the dispute now, though. For what it's worth, I still think you deserve your recognition and award and hope you'll allow us to keep in the Hall of Fame; none of the discussion there takes away from your lengthy accomplishments in my eyes. In a way, this project was founded to help us all remember that the lasting contributions we make here are greater than AN/I kerfluffles like that one. But it's ultimately your decision, I think, and if you wanted to remove it, I wouldn't stop you. In either case, though, thanks again for all you do here. -- Khazar2 (talk) 14:50, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
The issue is that I cannot be recognized for the actions it states that I have been recognized for, particularly if I am only making this request because I plan on leaving the project entirely over this bullshit.—Ryulong (琉竜) 14:53, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
By "this bullshit", I hope you don't mean the award but rather whatever is occurring over at WP:ANI. Like Khazar2, I am not a frequent visitor there. The award was given with the best of intentions. Except for the archives, it has been stricken. ```Buster Seven Talk 07:36, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
If an editor wants to hand back their "Eddy" (to coin a phrase if you will) I see know reason to question the good faith of what thy're doing, but no Buster I believe there are issues to which Ryulong is referring to at AN/I that he feels makes feel that h should not accept the award. I would say that he should be encouraged to keep it and reminded it was for what editors saw at that time and it should illustrate to others now that you are an editor of value.--Mark Miller (talk) 07:52, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Strictly speaking, he can't return the Eddy. He can choose to not display it on his User or talk page, which is his right. I also wish he would accept the good faith of the nominee and display it on his mantle, but he has chosen to hide it in the closet (archives). I have respected his request and have removed his name from the list of recipients. He has removed his userbox from the Hall of Fame. ```Buster Seven Talk 08:25, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
I would hope that this is rare and that, at some time in the future if he wants to re-accept it, perhaps it can be re-adjusted.--Mark Miller (talk) 08:36, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
I was perhaps thinking with my heart last night but I truly do not feel I deserve the award for the reasons that were originally presented considering all of the disruption I have caused on this project presently and in the past. The work you guys do is admirable. I just do not want to sully the name of what you have been doing. And for some time now I have not had anything along the line of barnstars or userboxes or whatever on my user talk page anyway. When everything blows over, I may revisit the idea of being mentioned on this page, but at the moment it seems pointless.—Ryulong (琉竜) 12:50, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Right now you are caught up in some whirlwind that engulfs you and your thoughts. When the wind dies down (which it always does), let us know. What has been done can just as easily be un-done. ```Buster Seven Talk 14:10, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
I have at least had the deletion of the infobox undone, but I still do not believe it is right for me to be listed here.—Ryulong (琉竜) 14:27, 5 November 2013 (UTC)
Ryulong, I do not know what is going on. I have avoided AN and AN/I recently and see a number of threads about a number of people over there. Hey...my name is among them. You feel discouraged and you feel as though your efforts have all been forgotten or undermined and perhaps even as if your name is being dragged through the mud. You may even have made some mistakes and feel responsible or feel blame or and of a number of things from having a situation become a community discussion about you. Hey...I've been there and hopefully I wont go through it again...oh wait, no, just had my name brought up on Jimbo's page. Sorry...never mind. Misunderstandings happen or we make a mistake. Learn from it, move past it and carry on. Sounds so over simplified but I guess the key there is to be able to just walk away from situations and any editor that just thinks you have nothing good to contribute. Seek out those that collaborate and find joy out of the process again where you can. Heck, that is how a lot of this part of the project got started. Many people were just looking for something productive to do that might have a positive impact an a very few like Buster have been keeping up with it. I know your weren't meaning to disrespect their efforts (and they put a great deal of effort into it) or yourself, but there is also no need to try and eras your history. Its a part of what makes you who you are today and it should make you stronger...because you survived it. I would like to re-offer - re nominate or just request that you keep your "Eddy" because it was the consensus of editors that you receive it. --Mark Miller (talk) 08:01, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
Update
Hi, this hasn't been updated for today's editor of the week, please could someone fix this? Thanks, Matty.007 19:31, 17 November 2013 (UTC)
Counterproductive
This project "editor of the week" is intended to retain editors but the opposite is happening. Editors who have been given this designation have begun to display the Retired template! In attempts to sway human behavior it sometimes happens that results opposite to those intended occur, as in this case. For example, User:PiCo (3 November) and User:Nishidani (October 27). Furthermore, User:Jackson Peebles (November 24) cannot be retained because he died. Evidently the netizens of Wikipedia have an ethos of egalitarianism which does not respond well to the ego-boost associated with Editor of the Week. For example, WP:Barnstars have been of some use, but WP:Service awards are rarely posted. As for the Editor of the Week project, it is clearly suicidal to continue.Rgdboer (talk) 21:20, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
I don't agree. I am sure receiving the award had nothing to do with the mentioned editors retirement. Since I do most of the "behind-the-scenes" work at EotW, I'll make a mental note that, should you be nominated, you would rather not receive the award. ```Buster Seven Talk 21:38, 12 December 2013 (UTC)
The 'retired' template on my page is thus for complex reasons, one of which is that I can't put semi-retired. And it was there before the award was given. The award has actually stayed my hand from complete withdrawal, since rather than a gesture of flattery, I took it as a reminder I had obligations to fellow-editors and to pages, particularly in the I/P area which has a high attrition or AE ban rate. I may not be able to come up to their expectations, but though semi-retired, I have decided to keep my hand in, and, at the least, be on call. If there's a template for that half-way house, I'll replace the one I have.Nishidani (talk) 12:20, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
Rgdboer, your argument is clear post hoc ergo propter hoc, which is almost always invalid. Looking at the recipient response tab will tell you all you need to know about what the majority of editors who receive this award think of it. Not presenting the award to any of the editors you mentioned would not have prevented them from retiring, per post hoc ergo propter hoc. Go Phightins! 03:14, 14 December 2013 (UTC)
Hi
I don't want to make a formal nomination, but maybe you would take a look at Siefkin DR (with no space). He mainly edit articles and isn't so much involved on talk pages, forums etc. He is currently working on Napoleon III and is main contributor to articles like Villa di Castello and Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps. His userpage says pretty much what kind of articles he has and is editing (Parks and fountains of Paris and colurs among other things). Regards, Iselilja (talk) 17:01, 5 December 2013 (UTC)
Iselilja His nomination is "in the works". Thanks for the suggestion. ```Buster Seven Talk 14:18, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
 Done ```Buster Seven Talk 17:29, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
Thank you User:Buster7. I'll be in the queue of gratulants when the time comes. Iselilja (talk) 14:31, 22 December 2013 (UTC)
This weeks Eddy
went to 331dot. Visit the editors talk page and offer your congratulations. Its quick and easy. ```Buster Seven Talk 14:25, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
Finally, the judges are awarding
Cwmhiraeth (submissions) the Geography Barnstar for her work on sea, now a featured article. This top-importance article was the highest-scoring this year; when it was promoted to FA status, Cwmhiraeth could claim 720 points. ```Buster Seven Talk 23:31, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
