National ID number entry[edit]

Could you please clarify the Ireland section of the National identification number article? I'm not entirely sure what you're saying about tax evasion. --Adamrush 19:03, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I am quite certain that I did not place that part of the text - It must mean for income tax and other tax relief (where people are given discounts and exemptions). Also for applying for certain types of bank accounts (SSIA - Special Savings Incentive Accounts) that have government paid interest on them and that limitations are granted on how many accounts maybe active. Djegan 19:07, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
What's the striked text for? Anyway, could you edit that article a bit, seeing as how you're, well, Irish and all. --Adamrush 19:25, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Strike out because I realised that you were correct in your first assertion. I have expanded the section none-the-less after researching it. Djegan 20:21, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph origins[edit]

The Ryan Academy lecture theatres photograph is from the invent centre website, though as far as I know I have use of it.

The Photograph of the library is scanned in from a DCU press release.

The Helix photograph was taken by myself with a digital camera.

We need an aerial photograph of the entire campus from the point of view of collins avenue - the 1998 photo does not look very good, especially when you compare it to the way DCU's current campus looks. Beta

You can take out that 1998 image, if you want. Djegan 21:40, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As with the library, I'm waiting for a replacement, dunno where I'm gonna get it though.

The images added are relevant to the articles and DCU is'nt complaining about copyright infringement, so why would they want to remove them? Beta

Its not a matter of what DCU thinks (or I for that matter) but rather what the wikipedia policy is on images, re Wikipedia:Uploading images. If no information is given on the source or reason for uploading or retaining an image then the recent trend at wikipedia has being simply to delete it. This policy has accelerated recently, with a lot of images falling fowl of the wikipedia policies, I am not trying to be harsh. Djegan 22:02, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Irish People[edit]

Hey look i am sorry that you got drawn into it, but i felt like i had to say something based on his remarks that he made in his african decent saying, as well as a previous statement that he made on October 27, as well as his actions to remove the people that he has in question lead me to idea that he has some problem with a person that is black having irish ancestry. While i am not a fan of these list, i find them extremely subjective, i think to dispute the listing of a person to find a verfiable source is one thing then to dispute the listing, reomve, state becuase you never herd them publicaly state they are identify with a group and then make some absurd remark about race. I would account that to some one saying that protestants on the list should not be considered irish people because the majorty of their ancestors came from scotland or england and theirfor they are not gueine irish. And though he did not come out and say it that balent, his actions and his sarcastic remarks infer as much by playing a race card, if he intentionaly ment to or not. Sor for the rant, just letting my side be know. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 03:26, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, I dont really care who appears, indeed if the list was deleted I would not care. But it is the principal of racism and supernationalism. Djegan 18:36, 28 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

County Dublin[edit]

Thanks for advising me of the changes you made to the County Dublin article. I do see what you're trying to do, but I believe the article is now too far compromised and has been left with highly questionable consistency. I have requested the page be moved, please see Talk:County_Dublin. LocGov 14:40, 5 November 2005

I'm interested to hear your views on whether the article on Ivory Coast should be at Côte d'Ivoire. A large bunch of people want it to be at the name used less in English than the English version more widely known, even though that is contrary to WP's NCs and MoS. I'd be interested to hear your views. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 19:24, 12 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think that's almost certainly a misunderstanding on the part of the editor in question. I've reverted the changes and put a note on his talk page. --Ryano 13:03, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - this is not my area of speciality, but was little concerned. Djegan 13:12, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

One thing to note is an episode that was part of the impetus for passing the Republic Act: the treatment that Costello received on a visit to Canada in 1948. An official dinner was calculated to slight him and his country: there was a model of the cannon Roaring Meg on the table and the toast given in his "honour" was to the King. By the way, I recommend that you go to the discussion page re McQuaid and read the very last comment. I did not put it there, I swear, but whoever did did so anonymously. However, if it is true then it deserves to be inserted into the McQuaid page. (Rms125a@hotmail.com)

Say what you want about me, you edits on wikipedia have only proven that you do not edit bona fide, if you wanted to prove to the contrary you would have sat down and discussed long ago and not carried out the despicable and unjustified methods you have used - the ethnic slurs, disinformation, revert wars and such. I am not going to drop to your level, rules about personal attacks notwithstanding. I believe that you did not place the aformentioned edit on the talk page - but we are now several months on from what you started on wikipedia - so if your edits do not conform to wikipedia standards then I - and the many others - reserve the right to continue to revert your work. Image:LUAS NETWORK MAP.png -- license missing[edit]

Hello Djegan, I just came across your nice images of the DART and LUAN networks. I would like to use them for the German articles, so I am planning to upload both images to commons. The DART network is licensed by GFDL, the LUAN network has no explicit license. Since commons explicitly requires to add a certain license I would like to ask you to add such a license at the description side. I would recommend you to use both GFDL and cc-by-sa, then I can upload them to commons (or you could da that yourself, of course). Thanks for your help! --muns 08:38, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have relicenced both images - please feel free to upload to commons. I hope, within a two months, to feature a more geographically correct DART image, so I will detail this on the image discription page when done if you want to keep it in your watchlist. Lands[edit]

Yeah that option might be worth considering. Re Lands, it was a separate department in its own right that sometimes was held with other offices. The Minister for Lands had responsibility for the Land Commission. Agriculture and Lands AFAIK would have meant that the Minister had two departments, not that one department had that name. DCU[edit]

Hey Djegan. I note that you either went to or are going to DCU. I'm almost certainly going to put DCU down as the no.1 on my CAO form this year and was wondering could you tell me one or two things?

  • At the open day I was under the impression that the Larkfield Apartments are more for first years, whereas the Hampstead Apartments are for 2nd/3rd/4th years. Is this true? Or is it more of a mix?
  • What did you study there? What did you think of the whole thing? Any regrets or gripes? You know how much marketing goes on on the open day and i'm sure lots was hidden from our view! So any info is appreciated!

(In advance!) Thanks a million Djegan, I really appreciate your time and comments! CGorman 21:47, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Finished DCU about two years ago, in engineering (mechatronics), so this info maybe out of date as they just never stop building. I suspect dcu is quite similar overall to other universities in ireland, but smaller and less city based. The city is about four miles or half an hour from the city center but the local area it is quite spacious. Security and safety is generally not a problem - but outside the campus it is pretty much any urban area.
Campus Residences Limited[1] manages all the on campus accomodation, I lived off campus. The on-campus accomdation I saw (final years, Hampstead) where basically like apartments (so each is self contained to a large degree), each with about several single rooms so their is plenty of privacy and can bring your own stuff, each room had its own washing/toilet facilities and each appartment had a common room (kitchen) area. I known their was laundry facilities and think these were on ground floor, they are fairly respectable. Pictures may give you a good idea (but dont set you choices on them) but most are comparable to other Irish apartments so some may not at all look like the ideal city life. But if you get one you will not be left complaining.
Getting on campus accomodation can be a bit of a lottery so Campus Residences also allows access to an online system for off-campus search. Off campus can be a bit expensive, remembering this is the capital - and was quite difficult to get. This situation should have changed in line with the economy - been cheaper and easier to get.
Generally the facilities on campus are good, sports hall, canteen, and the helix - the library has a good stock but gets very busy at exam time - getting a computer can be a bit difficult (when it gets busy), so it may be something to consider particularily in final years. The engineering, business and computer block are quite good - but can be utilitarian in the case of the latter two. Classes are small (about 50) so it is unlikly you will be in a lecture of 200 unless it is a very popular course. Lectures either read off or sell notes so books can be a hit and miss (the ones i purchased were barely opened twice) so photocopying can be ideal.
Modules and examinations are held in january and may, so the year is essentially split in two - this has the advantage that less stress and not at all like the leaving cert but christmas is a no-no, 14 to 24 of jan is typical for examination. most irish universities are going this way as late. You day largely depends on your course so some courses (business) will be easy whilst others like engineering will be busy. Project work is important and will often fill any additional time, particularily when group or final year project. Most students do the INTRA, some do it abroad - it makes the second part of third year go quick.
Regrets - no - but Dublin can be a cold and wet place at times. Djegan 23:03, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Templates[edit]

You know you can set the templates to display a void, if their is nothing in their assocated variable. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 22:34, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

How? Djegan 22:35, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well i dont know exactly whatr you want to be optional, becaus eit will sightly vairy based on usage, but the easiest way is to use a if statement. Basically where you have your {{{''para''}}} no you would replace it with {{if|{{{para}}}|{{{para}}}| }}, it preety easy to undeerstand, basicaly here is how it works, after the if call for the template, you have 3 variables, the first one is the test (the parameter you want the statement to work on), the second is the result if the para is not 0 (or basically what will be displayed or happen if parameter = something), the thirs is the result if the para is 0(or basically what will be displayed or happen if parameter is blank). It's a bit confusing at first, i'll admit i am nto the best all the time when it comes to explainging things. Alternative you might also want to just try putting the parameters in the template as {{{para| }}} instead of the standard {{{para}}}. What it will do is that if the parameter is not included in the article text it will not display the {{{para}}} in the article. Umm well i hope this helps, let me know if you need any assistance or something. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 06:02, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Showdown? At dawn, perhaps?[edit]

A curious choice of words. I don't understand your reference to a single political entity, where was that mentioned? Could you clarify the lack of accuracy you referred to? I agree about the unnecessary duplication, there's no need for two lists for Ireland when the subject matter is apolitical.

AINM[edit]

Hm. I hadn't considered that. UU uses the Irish name on its website in lieu of the English version on relevant pages (e.g. http://www.arts.ulster.ac.uk/lanlit/irish/gaeilge.html), and Queen's uses it for publishing and for cultural/social (e.g. the Student Union handbook). I'm not sure whether the Ullans names are actually used at all, although there is an Ulster Scots institute at UU. --Kwekubo 22:11, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Prime Minister[edit]

Your comments would be welcome at Prime Minister. One user, without even bothering to go through the proper procedures, wants to rename the article Prime minister and keeps moving it to push that version!!! While there is an article for all uppercasing or all lowercasing, half-casing (which is all WP allows, as all lowercasing is not possible in article titles) would produce a semi-literate mess that would make WP a laughing stock. A student who writes the title that way in an essay earns an instant fail because it is seen as such a monumental clanger. With all the attacks WP is under right now, the last thing WP needs is to make it look as though it does not know how to write the title of the office of premier correctly. What next? Lord mayor? United states? FearÉIREANN\(caint) 23:28, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My use of the word 'Erse'.[edit]

Djegan, being of Scots descent, I have always known what is spoken in Ireland as Erse. To me, I see nothing wrong with describing the Irish-Gaelic language as 'Erse' to distinguish it from the Scots-Gaelic language. To be frank, I don't see what the fuss is all about. - (Aidan Work 01:38, 14 December 2005 (UTC))[reply]

Irish Republicanism Template vote[edit]

There is a WP:TFD vote to delete Template:Irish Republicanism. In my view the template is fatally flawed in a host of areas, littered with inaccuracies and would be a guaranteed source of endless POV battles between SFs, RSFs, 32 County nutcases, etc etc. We only need to look at the POV nightmares at the various IRA pages to see the nightmares that could be caused by a template that tries to describe who is in and who is outside Irish republicanism, who is a key figure and who isn't. Redking made an interesting suggestion in the debate where he suggested that in effect the template is part if a campaign of normalisation of the Provos to make them legitimate. Irish[edit]

Thanks, I did try to find something on the SEC or DoE websites, but neither of them say that -anything- is compulsary to get a leaving certificate established (different rules for LCA/LCVP)

The other thing that gets me annoyed here is the constant adding of "Irish Names" for Irish political figures, when most of them have never and never will use the Irish back-translation of their name... removing them as I see them, though. --Kiand 21:07, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi mate,

You may remember the war on styles that was waged some time ago and the eventual compromise reached which meant that styles (Holiness, Majesty, Royal Highness, etc) are no longer used in royalty articles. A series of templates were created to enable users to warn other users who attempt to reinsert styles into articles that that is no longer WP policy. However a user who is trying to get a whole series of templates deleted has nominated them on the WP:TFD for deletion. I am thoroughly fed up having to defend necessary templates from the minority of deletion police on WP who seem to act as a group: one nominates, then the rest all vote to agree with them. All help to defend the necessary templates in the styles series gratefully received. Thanks. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 19:05, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

User:Kiand & User:Hu are Britanniphobic vandals![edit]

It really angers me when I find that my articles have been vandalised. It is the work of either or both of these serious offenders. They have been warned that the next time they vandalise an article I've written, then they're for the high jump! Why should I waste my time fixing up what they've done. I resent it when they rename an article from British Commonwealth to Commonwealth of Nations, when the use of 'nation' to describe a country is wrong. The word 'nation' is an ethnological term, and should NEVER be used to describe a country. So, British Commonwealth remains in common use, and it is a politically neutral term. - (Aidan Work 02:45, 19 January 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Wrong on four points (phobic, vandal, ownership, terminology), Mr. Work:
  • I am a Britannophile. I admire the British and love the music. This knowledge escaped your notice because I had not until now expressed it and my edits have been neutral so they did not reveal it either.
  • However, I hold ideals like Neutral Point of View even higher. Thus I don't have a political agenda at Wikipedia so I don't vandalize articles. I edit them in consensus with other editors in an iterative process that seeks the truth. I restrict my political agenda to political forums.
  • Here at Wikipedia, nobody posesses an article. Thus any article you write is as much mine and Kiand's as it is yours. However we are all only free to edit it in a way that supports verifiable neutral facts.
  • The Commonwealth dropped the "British" designation in 1946 or 1949, officially. Thus the proper neutral way is to refer to it the way they have asked everyone to refer to it and the way your idol the Queen refers to it, as the "Commonwealth of Nations". You can probably get away with referring to it as simply the "Commonwealth" in most contexts if you have some doctrinaire reaction to the word "nation". I do commend to your attention the name of the "United Nations". However, you can't refer to it as "British" because that refers to only the narrow period of time from about 1931 to 1949 when it officially had that name. Further, you are wrong to be doctrinaire about the use of the word "nation". For example, the official designations of the British National Health Service, British National Space Centre and National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act 1949 have no ethnological connotations. Similarly, the National Radio (New Zealand), National Library of New Zealand, and Whanganui National Park (very near you, Mr. Work) have no ethnological limitations. Hey,

Have you noticed the sudden disappearance of Lapsed Pacifist from the moment an arbcom hearing started? It seems damned fishy. It makes me wonder if he wasn't someone directedly associated with Sinn Féin, maybe an employee, who abandoned WP lest an arbcom investigation probe too deeply. I know friends in SF who say that the party is well aware of WP and its open edit policy. They used to joke about getting "our people" to use it as a propaganda tool. Did LP leave lest the arbcom delve too deeply and find something that someone or some organisation wouldn't want exposed? FearÉIREANN\(caint) 01:40, 18 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Its hard to know what to make of him. I remember one particular instance when I challenged him very clearly on an issue and after a very short outburst he dropped the issue and left it alone.
