German Reaction

At the end, the article states that the "You screwed Bret!" arise, when key-players of the double-cross enter Wrestling-rings in Montreal or Canada. Being german and having visited last year's (2004) WWE-event in Frankfurt, I want to add that these chants even arise in germany and 7 years after the incident, while Shawn Michaels, playing a face-character, is having his match. Although these chants are disapproved by half of the crowd, they exist!

The reason for this probably is the fact of Bret Hart being a very popular wrestler in the 90s in germany. Seeing it in relation to the US, he was liked far more over here + his "heel"-character (in 1996/97), being anti-US, never worked in germany (similar like in Canada).

Confused

There are several things which still need to be cleared up for me; why did McMahon want Michaels to receive the belt instead and organize the screwjob to begin with? I mean, it wasn't as if McMahon felt betrayed by Brett for leaving to WCW; hell, McMahon was the one who had ASKED Brett to leave to WCW to begin with (they needed the money, as stated in another article)! Brett should have been the one feeling betrayed. And the comment McMahon had made; "Bret screwed Bret" -- I still remember to this day; but still have no idea why he said that; as it made no sense.

~~Actually Vince had plans by then for Stone Cold to win the belt for the first time at WM XIV (and not before that) and had to have a big name as the champ to sell the PPV, Michaels had the right persona to be Austin's opponent, Undertaker's character was not the right fit and no one else at that time could draw, Rock, HHH, Foley, were not yet ready to take that role, Michaels was the only logical opponent and needed to be champ for several months to sell this thing.. They could not afford to have a trasitional champ going into WM like the year before, which was a disaster caused by Michaels "losing his smile" and the title changed hands 3 times from the Rumble to WM. That caused WCW to widen their gap on WWF and by year's end the gap closed and they needed this stability in order to catch them, which they eventually did.

Bret was willing to drop the title the night after Survivor Series on Monday Night Raw, and to anyone but Michaels. He refused to drop it to Michaels in Canada, and Vince was afraid that Bret might do what another wrestler, the then-women's champion Alundra Blayze did, and take the belt with him (Blayze appeared on WCW Monday Nitro and dropped the women's title belt in the trashcan on live TV). So Vince came up with the plan to ensure that Bret would not have a chance. Hence why Vince said "Bret screwed Bret". You bring up some good points. I've still re-edited it though, to make it more encylopedic and concise (as well as factual and non-POV, as yours was skewed slightly in an anti-Hart direction). Vince on his DVD

Hey on the mcmahon DVD, Shane mcmahon claims that his dad went into Bret's lockerroom and apoligized for what happened and told Bret to hit him if he wanted to. Even tho this may not be what happened, shouldn't it be mentioned on the article that there are two diffrent versions of what was said about what really happened? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raven6247 (talk • contribs)

Work

Several factors I have noticed within the match itself that tell me that it was a work.

At the beginning of the match JR commentates on Bret Hart's 21 year career. Stating he began at the age of 19 and "it has been a long journey". If I were a commentator and I were discussing Bret Hart's career I wouldn't say long unless I knew it was coming to an end soon. But even more important then that JR says that the feud has been 18 months and "has taken a long time to get it done". Wait though the match isn't over yet? And these two were likely gonna be feuding forever which the WWF definitely hinted to the fans. Its strange that he would pick those words. It gets better though because his next words are "And the (I think he is saying harmony) is, you will never, ever see it again." WOW

JR comments a little bit after this that "And of course you know, its not about the money. Its about the WWF title. Buts its about more than that." And King says "OH YEAH!" JR responds "As you said king that these two men trully believe in their hearts (pause) that they are the better man." King responds "its all about the power." After the battling begins JR says that "Bret Hart will win a fist fight." King mentions the timekeeper when the two are battling before the match really even starts. JR comments about Bret Hart's future, "everyone's got the answer everyone knows the story."

The biggest piece of evidence is Bret Hart's theme music plays while he destroys the tv equipment. Instead of him being arrested or contained. Are you kidding me? Also why the fuck would he destroy stuff that gets destroyed at a lot of different events and spit at McMahon when he has done that in the past as a gimmick? Why is McMahon in perfect position to be spit in the face? Why didn't Bret ever sue WWF?

Just to counter your assumpion..

a and b) This was Bret Hart's last match in the WWF. The WWF was never going to say "this is his last match in the WWF", because in no way do they ::want to hint that he will be wrestling at WCW or anywhere else (and lose potential money), though it was well known by the smarks at the time that ::he was going to WCW, but not by the casual fans. Also keep in mind that neither Jim Ross nor Jerry Lawler, nor did the production truck know about ::the the impending finish.

Vince McMahon knew from the get-go that he was wrong in what happened, but he thought that he did the right way to go about it, hense why nothing ::was done about Bret when he damaged WWF material (in reality, he didn't damage anything) and if he put out a lawsuit, Bret would counter and most ::likely win. --Raderick 06:46, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Smh to the above. it was KNOWN this was probably Bret's last match not only within the WWF but to many fans as well, hence the reason for all of JR's comments. On a side note, the entire "Work or shoot" section is just absurd, embarrassing and needs to be deleted. The talk of it being a work pretty much only came out after people finally got bored of talking about the incident itself. Just because a few wrestlers made comments about it being a work, likely just to get attention, doesn't mean it should get it's own part in this article. I agree with every word of the above. It's embarrassing. Needs to be deleted immediately. Sean Waltman apparently doesn't know how to read either with regards to thinking it was shocking how Bret would have no clue a screwjob was coming. Bret mentions SEVERAL times in his book how he was suspicious of being screwed and only after he spoke to Earl Hebner did he feel comfortable. Trivia - Royal Rumble 2006

This is just a note I remembered, one of the trailers for the 2006 Royal Rumble, had the McMahon family dressed has roman emperors ( Vince was "Cesar" ) and the crowd were yelling "You Screwed Bretus" until the time McMahon told them to shut up.

Not important for the story itself but it could be added has a trivia note.
