Inclusion[edit]

Performances that are majority English and only contain a couple of lines in a foreign language should not be on the list. I am removing some of them. JDDJS (talk) 02:19, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sign language[edit]

Should we include performances given in American Sign Language, such as Marlee Matlin in Children of a Lesser God or Sally Hawkins in The Shape of Water? Rinko Kikuchi is already listed for her performance in Japanese Sign Language.Sbb618 (talk) 21:27, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I would be all for including them, but we would have to change the title to "in languages other than English" first because American Sign Language isn't foreign. JDDJS (talk) 22:10, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
American Sign Language *is* English. How are those performances listed under "non-English performances"? I think it's absurd and offensive. If speaking through voice is the decisive factor here, then all silent performances should also be listed, because I can guarantee you Emil Jannings didn't "speak" any English in The Last Command nor Janet Gaynor in 7th Heaven. Kumagoro-42 (talk) 01:19, 27 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kumagoro-42 Saying American Sign Language is English is absolutely absurd. American Sign Language is it's own language. Nobody considers it to be English. JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 16:34, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

List of actors nominated for Academy Awards for foreign language performancesList of actors nominated for Academy Awards for non-English performances – This will allow us to include sign language performances in the article, such as Marlee Matlin for Children of a Lesser God and Sally Hawkins for The Shape of Water JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 00:26, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How about creating a separate list for actors nominated for Sign languages performances/non-speaking roles (such as Holly Hunter in The Piano and Max Von Sydow in Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close) instead of changing the title of this one? Zoolver (talk) 01:24, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Zoolver I wouldn't necessarily be oposed to doing that instead. However, what would we name that article? Also, how many entries would it have? JDDJS (talk to mesee what I've done) 17:40, 24 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@JDDJS: I found these articles listing the actors nominated for non-speaking roles. Adding the sign language performances, that would make it about 16 actors. The list would be even bigger if we add the actors nominated for silent films from the 20s and 30s. I guess that's enough for a separate list here. I think "List of actors nominated for Academy Awards for Sign language or non-speaking performances", or just "List of actors nominated for Academy Awards for non-speaking performances" would be a good title.
