Random juxtaposition (or not)[edit]

We're told:

They are intended to distract the reader with randomly juxtaposed images and sound. Mosdell wrote a “distractive” poem for each “oracle” in English, while Tanikawa wrote the reverse side in Japanese. Jore Park and Wylci Fables created accompanying 77 washi-painted panels. Musician Yu Imai then worked alongside other studio performers with Mosdell to create 77 audio sketches utilizing Mosdell’s VISIC compositional method. The efforts were combined into a CD box set of text, audio and visual imagery intended to be used in conjunction. Users were instructed to randomly select a numbered card to read and view, and to simultaneously play the CD track of the same number.

Clapton, Jackson[edit]

In the intro to this page Mosdell is credited with writing lyrics for Eric Clapton and with Michael Jackson. As far as I know this is stretching the truth; both those artists covered "Behind the Mask" which Mosdell wrote for YMO and to which Jackson added some of his own lyrics years after the original song was completed. Since this one song is his only link to either artist, and he presumably never met either of them, I don't think they should be mentioned so prominently in the article. 67.180.92.25 (talk) 02:17, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've edited the article a little and I hope that I have improved it a little. I can't do much more as I know little about Clapton, Jackson, or Mosdell. Mosdell's article has an odd history; I'd never even heard of him before I noticed that the article on Shuntarō Tanikawa devoted a surprising percentage of space to him (fixed, temporarily at least) -- you have to remember that Tanikawa has verifiably collaborated with a remarkably large number of people (for starters, see this). ¶ As a level-headed person with a sense of perspective, you'd be most welcome to edit this article on Mosdell (and other articles) yourself. Although registration (acquisition and use of a particular username) isn't required, I strongly recommend it: it's very simple and hardly requires explanation, but here is an explanation anyway. -- Hoary (talk) 03:01, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I just spoke with Chris Mosdell to clarify this issue. In the case of Eric Clapton, there was no communication and it is simply a cover version, so this should be made clearer in the wiki, which I will do in just a moment. In the case of Jackson, it is a co-written collaboration, Quincy Jones passed the original YMO song to Jackson who requested to add his own lyrics, after which a lengthy exchange of communication with Chris (who retains the original letters at his home) led to a final co-written version of the lyrics. The song was pulled from the Thriller album at the last moment due to a dispute over royalties with YMO member Ryuichi Sakamoto, who composed the music, leading to the delay of the track being released until after Jackson's death. I think the correct way to refer to the writing of the lyrics of the song therefore would be to say it is "co-written with," rather than "written for" Jackson. -- readyforlara (talk) 15:17, 17 January 2012 (JST)
