Re: Economy of Uzbekistan

Hello - thanks for the message. Uzbek Ikat was deleted because it was a copyright violation. A new article can be created with free content. You're welcome to create a new Uzbek Ikat article, to remove the brackets ( -->[[ Ikat ]]<-- ) around the redlink to make it plain text, or to leave it alone. If it's left alone and the redlink remains, it's a little more likely that a new article will be created by someone who knows about Ikat and doesn't need to copy/paste content from a store to create the article. Unfortunately, I'm not that person. :-) Thanks again for the message. - KrakatoaKatie 01:38, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Inappropriate moves

  1. Avoid edits wars.
  2. Find and cite reliable published authority for the "correct" or "most useful" name. Place your argument (as in logical argument) on the Talk page of the article.
  3. Place a requested move template on the article and list it at Wikipedia:Requested moves. As you know that another editor objects to restoring the original title, this would be listed under Incomplete and contested proposals section.
  4. Use the RFC process. See Talk:Shindand District for an example. See Nov. 26, 2007 edit for original placement of RFC. I recommend writing out your argument, identifying separate key points, and making each point succinct before placing the RFC. Be sure to state the reason as neutrally as possible. In the Shindand District example I used: "Whether the district in Afghanistan should go by the official name "Shindand" or the old Persian name "Sabzwar"?" That statement was not entirely neutral. Normally geographical question get placed at RFChist. I see right now (22 April 2008) that you will need to add it manually as the bot isn't working. Although in the Shindand District example I used RFCpol, as I had not been getting much response at the time on RFChist.
I hope this helps. --Bejnar (talk) 01:12, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Tajikistan: Kohistan-Badakhshan vs. Gorno-Badakhshan

On the merits of Kohistan-Badakhshan vs. Gorno-Badakhshan, it is clear that between the two the world-wide preference is for Gorno-Badakhshan. However the GEOnet Names Server (GNS), developed and maintained by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency uses Kŭhistoni Badakhshon, Viloyati Mukhtori or Kŭhistoni Badakhshon for short. "Viloyati Mukhtori" means "oblast (province) autonomous". The GNS indicates that Kŭhistoni Badakhshon is the official local name for the province. Nonetheless, these recently published articles all used Gorno-Badakhshan:

  • Kreutzmann, Hermann (May 2001) "Development Indicators for Mountain Regions" Mountain Research and Development 21(2): pp. 132-139, where on page 135 the author compares the attitudes and standard of living in Gorno-Badakhshan with that of the rest of Tajikstan.

I found no similar citations for Kohistan-Badakhshan. Both Gorno-Badakhshan and Kŭhistoni Badakhshon have around 28,000 Google hits, while Kohistan-Badakhshan has around thirty, mostly from the Wikipedia entry and mirrors. It would be hard to pick between Gorno-Badakhshan and Kŭhistoni Badakhshon, except that Gorno-Badakhshan does appear, primarily for historical reasons, to be the currently preferred English language version of the name in academia. I note in passing that varient "Badakhshoni Kŭhy" appears to be little used. --Bejnar (talk) 01:55, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Protection of Uzbekistan and Tadjikistan

I've only protected those pages against moves, not against editing. We have a serial vandal who's been moving all the country pages to nonsense titles. We're trying to prevent that. Thanks, NawlinWiki (talk) 03:19, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Request to move article Zarafshon river incomplete

You recently filed a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves to move the page Zarafshon river to a different title - however your proposal is either incomplete or has been contested as being controversial. As a result, it has been moved to the incomplete and contested proposals section. Requests that remain incomplete after five days will be removed.

Please make sure you have completed all three of the following:

  1. Added {{move|NewName}} at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved, replacing "NewName" with the new name for the article. This creates the required template for you there.
  2. Added {{subst:RMtalk|NewName|reason for move}} to the bottom of the talk page of the page you want to be moved, to automatically create a discussion section there.
  3. Added {{subst:RMlink|PageName|NewName|reason for move}} to the top of today's section here.

If you need any further guidance, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves or contact me on my talk page. - JPG-GR (talk) 01:43, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Tajikistan

LOL thanks. Thank God for nice editors like you, it really is a welcome relief from some of the rather lesser friendly Norwegians we have on here. Maplandia has all of the places and coordinates of most places in the world. Just scroll down. Tajikistan isn't divided into the districts as it should be on there, in fact the regions now seme out of date but the coordinates should still be right. I've been trying to ge thold of photos for places in the country and Uzbekistan too along with several of the other Central Asian countries. I love Central Asia! Happy editing!! Regards ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:56, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

If you have any photos of any of these places, please please upload them!!!! Regards! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:28, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Awesome we need as many as possible of... well everywhere in Central Asia!!!! We've tried for a very long time to find free images of these countries in central asia. Best place is to upload them to the Wiki commons the image bank. Be sure to license them under {{GFDL}} so they can be used by everybody and all the other differen language wikipedias too. 800px is a good resolution but many of the images are 1600px. Whatever you feel is appropriate. If you like let me know when you want to upload some and I will help supervise you in the commons. Then once you get the hang of it you'll be able to upload them all!!!

P.S I think I noticed your name a few weeks back adding some Tajik mountain range which I'd noticed were missing before. Excellent work my friend!!!! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:38, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Perfect!!!! What valuable photos!!! Upload as many as you can, particularly on towns. Then they can be added to the articles. Anything from georgia, tajikistan, turkmenistan, armenia, azerbaijan, kazakhstan and kyrgzstan is much needed! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 10:17, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Anything between 300px and 1600px. If you believe a certain px size affects quality do whatever you think necessary to make them of the highest possible standard. The ones I looked at the looked fine ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 10:32, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

I'll have a look now. Basically if you upload photos from a city they should go in e.g Category:Dushanbe which it turn goes in the category Category:Cities in Tajikistan. Now if there are hundreds of photos it may be more reasonable to create sub categories like Category:Buildings and structures in Dushanbe etc but its best at first to organize them by city or place within the country ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:21, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Nice! I've added the images to Tursunzoda. If you have any images overlooking cities -panorama images from further away etc (like the main one in the Dushanbe article) by sure to upload!! I have recategorized your images -rmemeber to use city categories rather than the generic Category:Tajikistan in future. Keep them coming! ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 17:01, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

A note from an observer who stumbled upon this conversation: When you're uploading pictures, you should upload the largest resolution you have. (Some people scale their photos down, which we discourage but accept because some are pro photographers who want to be able to sell higher-resolution photos but give away low-res ones.) Thanks for your offer of photos of Central Asia--it's always hard to get photos of more remote, less developed locations. Mangostar (talk) 17:30, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes they should be moved to Category:Cities in Tajikistan too ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 09:13, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Help with GeoGroupTemplate in categories

{{helpme}} The map that I get after inserting {{GeoGroupTemplate}} into Category:Mountains of Tajikistan (following the example of Category:Lakes of Tajikistan) does not show all the mountains listed in this category and one of the mountains -- Avicenna -- is shown in an incorrect position. How can I update the content underlying this otherwise great map (and possibly create similar maps for other categories)? I sent an e-mail with this question to ts-admins@wikimedia.org a few days back, but no reply. --Zlerman (talk) 05:28, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

The way this template works is by collecting the coordinates from each individual article inside the category. If an article doesn't have a coordinate template already in the article, it will not show up when you use that template. Also, if the coordinates are wrong in the resulting map, that means they are incorrect in the article. Further, any articles whose names are in italics in the category won't show up either, since these are redirects (doesn't look like a problem here, since they appear to be alternate names of Lenin Peak). To add coordinates to an article, use the {{coord}} template in that article. If you have any more questions, please leave a message on my talk page. Cheers! Huntster (t@c) 06:02, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Ask for any help you need, I'll do all I can. Just remember to carefully read the instructions on each Template page...they usually explain themselves quite well. Also look how the template is used on other articles...that's the best place, since you see it in action. Good luck! Huntster (t@c) 08:35, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Aha, I misspoke after too briefly looking at the template code. Turns out that, at least when it comes to Categories, the template pulls information not from Wikipedia itself, but from the Wikimedia toolserver en.wiki database dump. Since these dumps only occur ever so often (and seemingly at a rate that slows down as the number of articles grows larger), any information that has been added or changed since the last dump won't show up when this template is used. This explains why some map points are missing, and why that one redirected article still shows up. In any case, there is absolutely nothing we can do about this (and apparently there have been some problems with the dumps lately...last update to the toolserver appears to be August 31, 2007). Still, looks like a useful template, especially if you are dealing with actual lists of geographic coordinates. Huntster (t@c) 03:29, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Forgot to login

{{helpme}} It often happens that I start editing without noticing that I am not logged in as Zlerman. Since no warning comes up when I try save the edit, the contributions are identified by my institutional IP 128.139.226.37, which is also used by hundreds of other Wikis in my University. Two questions:

(a) Would it be possible for the future to create a warning about not being logged in that will flash on the screen when an anonymous user tries to save an edit? I agree that anonymous users should be able to edit freely, but this flashing (or bold red) warning will simply remind registered users that they are not logged in.

(b) Is there a way to "attribute after the fact" to Zlerman my edits that are currently identified with the institutional IP 128.139.226.37?

Look forward to hearing from someone. Thanks in advance, --Zlerman (talk) 03:51, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

(a) You should already get a "You are not logged in" warning. (b) Only developers can do that and they wont. You can leave a note on the talk page, that some edits have been made by you though. Hope this helps. LegoKontribsTalkM 04:36, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Moving "History" and "Talk page" from old article Vahdat to new article Vahdat (town)

I am sorry, but I have created a mess in several stages:

  • First I redirected the original Vahdat to specially created Vahdat (disambiguation)
  • Then I transferred the contents of the original Vahdat to newly created Vahdat (town) by copy and paste, without using the move button;
  • Everything works fine, except that the Discussion and History for Vahdat (town) remain under the old Vahdat (now redirected to Vahdat (disambiguation)). They are accessible by clicking on the "Redirected from Vahdat" link on the Vahdat (disambiguation) page.

I do not know how to move the Discussion and History of the original Vahdat to the new Vahdat (town). I am afraid that if I use the move button I will ruin Vahdat (town), because the original Vahdat is now just the redirect instruction.

Can you help and move just the Discussion and History? --Zlerman (talk) 03:30, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

re: Timorim

I've replied on my talk page, let's continue the discussion there. -- Nudve (talk) 12:25, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Many thanks for creating the article. I don't suppose you'd also like to do moshav ovdim? Cheers, пﮟოьεԻ 57 12:37, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it might make more sense to edit the moshav article. Interestingly the Hebrew wiki article on moshav covers all three (including Moshav Poalim) and doesn't have separate sections - perhaps we could even do that here, as the moshav article is not exactly extensive (the list could be split off as was done with the kibbutz article).
As for why I'm interested, I lived in Israel for a few years - first in Midreshet Ben-Gurion (an article I really need to get round to expanding), where I was a student at the BGU, and then Be'er Sheva where I taught English. пﮟოьεԻ 57 13:14, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Also, I see you are a professor of agricultural economics at the Hebrew University - my MA thesis was on a similar subject (world food trade over the past 40 years) and several of my contemporaries studied similar things (one was planning to do a study of Turkmen agriculture, but visa issues prevented her from going). пﮟოьεԻ 57 13:17, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
I think that the list of moshavim in the article was drawn up by copying the contents of the category. However, it was done quite a while ago, and I've probably created another 100 or so articles on moshavim in the last six weeks. At the moment, I'd be tempted to drop the list, and then once we have a complete set of articles on places in Israel (end of August at my current rate), then copy the category again. пﮟოьεԻ 57 14:25, 11 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, that would be interesting. Cheers, пﮟოьεԻ 57 10:39, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Excellent. I may go through the list and ensure that all the articles note that they are moshav shitufiim. пﮟოьεԻ 57 10:55, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Kfar Daniel

It probably is Hever - I just translated across from the Hebrew wiki, and on occasions where there are names of people or places, I get it wrong as there is no nikud!

The Hungarian immigrants part is almost certainly a mistake on my behalf - I usually create articles by copying the template of another one and replacing the details - I must have missed that, so thanks for bringing it to my attention. пﮟოьεԻ 57 13:36, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Moshavim Movement

I've always used Moshavim Movement - as opposed to the Kibbutz Movement which uses the singular in Hebrew (התנועה הקיבוצית) - it uses the plural, i.e. תנועת המושבים. At the moment 142 pages link to Moshavim Movement, two to Moshavim movement, one to Moshav movement and three to Moshav Movement пﮟოьεԻ 57 07:59, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Shavei Tzion

I was actually planning on creating the article at Shavei Tzion (overwriting the redirect), as there is no actual article at the title, and the common English name for the thin it current redirects to is The Return to Zion, though of course I'll add a hatnote DAB on the top to note the other possible meaning. пﮟოьεԻ 57 08:23, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

I've created the article at the title. пﮟოьεԻ 57 08:33, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Mizra

Hi. The article does mention the store, and it's in past tense. It doesn't talk about current primacy. Perhaps some rewording is needed (I didn't want the DYK to repeat the article verbatim), but it basically says what the source (an Haaretz article) says. Feel free to tweak the article for accuracy, or to add further sources. Cheers. -- Nudve (talk) 04:28, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

The way I understood the Haaretz article, the store was the "only place to buy" non-kosher meat. At the time I assumed that describing the store as "only provider" would be synonymous, as would "only place that sold" in the DYK. I guess I didn't think it through. Again, the article can be edited; The DYK is history :) -- Nudve (talk) 04:56, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Demographics of Azerbaijan

Hey Zlerman. No problem. I think most of 217.196.55.243's edits have been reverted, but there could be a few edits that could have been overlooked. Apparently "Ahiska Turks" redirects to Meskhetian Turks. They are known as Ahıska Türkleri (Akhaltsikhe Turks) in Turkey.

Although this link refers to them as "Sakhurs", the correct spelling is Tsakhurs. I know two users who could perhaps clarify the linguistics of the issue: N-true and Thefamouseccles. Both are very knowledge on languages of the Caucasus. Khoikhoi 22:53, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Dear User:UzbekKhan: I don't know how to write to you, so I will put my message in three places: on your newly created talk page, on my talk page (where you posted your comment), and on Talk:Uzbek language. I am not saying that Sogdian language is related to the Uzbek language. I am only saying that there is a link between the two that justifies the inclusion of Sogdian under See also in the article Uzbek language. Please check the article Sogdian and see the several mentions of Uzbekistan and Uzbek language there. Of course if, despite this explanation, you are convinced that Sogdian should be taken out from See also in Uzbek language, please go ahead and do it: I promise not to revert it again. Lerman Please look at your edits before you start making erronous accusations about my edits, removing the term "terrorist" to describe Hamas is in keeping with Wikipedia's policy on NPOV, to describe Hamas as terrorist..this is 100% POV. The other paragraph that I reverted to in the article in question is more NPOV then the recent changes by other editors. Concerning the mezze article there is one editor in question who was deleting references to Syria and placing other countires who do not specialize in this food first. With regards to the arab candaians page, no my additions weren't sourced, but I used the information provided in their articles. I do my best with sourcing. Manti and meze

Manti is actually served there, but I don't think it's very popular. Meze is alien to Eastern Armenian cuisine (Republic of Armenia). For example, the only place that would serve mezes in Yerevan would be those restaurants run by Armenians from Lebanon, Syria, or Turkey. Hakob (talk) 06:40, 31 August 2008 (UTC)

Armenian cuisine and Meze

Living near Watertown, Mass. (with a major Armenian population), I enjoy Armenian cuisine quite a bit. However, I don't think it makes sense to add an Armenian cuisine tag to all the foods which are common to the Middle East in general and the Levant in particular (meze, hummus, fattoush, etc.) -- unlike the dishes which, as far as I know, are specifically Armenian, like eetch. Clearly Armenian cuisine is not a strict subset of "Middle Eastern cuisine" in general, however these foods are common to the region, and it serves no useful purpose to categorize them as specifically Armenian. --Macrakis (talk) 05:14, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Pierogi (derelye) in Hungary

I'm afraid that you're mistaken. I didn't originate the content regarding Hungarian folklore in connection with derelye. What I did was revert vandalism that included the removal of this information from the article. Someone else had added this information prior to my revert. — Myasuda (talk) 13:21, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

I did a little research and found that the Hungarian folklore content was added on June 7, 2006: [2]. The specific reference to derelye was added on June 1, 2007: [3]. Since this content was added so long ago with no challenges (besides the inappropriate vandalism that accompanied its temporary removal), I'd recommend adding a {{cn}} tag to it for a few weeks (along with an entry on the discussion page [4]) to see if someone more knowledgeable about this topic can support the assertion. If no one can support it, then by all means remove the content. — Myasuda (talk) 14:01, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Hello Zlerman and thank you for contacting me. That user had been using multiple unregistered accounts in order to try to enforce his removals of sourced content, therefore warnings or a block would be of little use. Instead, I've semi-protected the article, effectively preventing the persistent disruptor from causing any further trouble there. Regards, Húsönd 15:52, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Hello Zlerman. I'll have to get back to you on your request later, as I'm in a hurry now. Regards, Húsönd 08:44, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Zlerman, I could not find anything in the IP user's edits that would justify admin intervention. Users are allowed to insert unsourced content, as are users allowed to dispute that content until a source is added if they suspect that the content inserted is untrue or not written in a neutral point of view. In the case of Types of rape though, the serious accusations against Indians should require a source or be removed until one is provided. Regard, Húsönd 16:49, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

I did some searching on their website, and I was able to locate what appears to be statistics yearbook for 2006 and 2007, although the Abkhazia article says that 2005 was "the last year when such estimates were published in Georgia." See for yourself:

Thanks, but I already have it. :-) Have you heard of Internet Archive? It is an extremely useful website for accessing pages that are no longer online. If you enter the URL there you can see 10 results from the year 2006 ([7]) -- although it is still the same 2005 file. Click on any of them and you can get the document. I'm telling you this because you added a note that said "THIS LINK IS NOW DEAD", but you could use one of the links listed there instead. Khoikhoi 03:06, 11 September 2008 (UTC)
No problem. If you see Template:Cite web, you will see options for "url", "archiveurl", and "archivedate". Insert the original URL into the "url" column, the URL of the archived version in the "archiveurl" column, and the date of when the page was archived in a format similar to "2008-09-11" in "archivedate". Cheers, Khoikhoi 03:33, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

Hey, quick question. I added two images of the Dushanbe synagogue that you took to that article. However, I noticed that while you took them on June 2006, the article says that the synagogue was demolished in February 2006. Were the images of this synagogue or the new one on Nazyina Khikmeta Street? Khoikhoi 05:17, 22 September 2008 (UTC)

So from what I can understand is that in Feb. 06, the demolition began, but then in March it was saved, and around June 08 was demolished? I took at look at the talk page, you might find the following comment interesting:

First of all, on the website that we got the picture from, it says BukharianJews.com, not Bukharan. The community itself calls itself the Bukharian community, Jewish or Muslims. Also, I am a Bukharian Jew. My great great grandfathers were one of the founders and one of the first people to bring the Torah to this synagogue. As the descendant of the co-founders of this shul, I should know a thing or two. LeeMulod333 (talk) 22:02, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

As far as I know, by the end of the Soviet Union, this was the only synagogue left in Dushanbe. When you visited the synagogue in 2006, did you see any demolition in the area? My guess is that it was stalled for a certain amount of time, but today it no longer stands. Khoikhoi 23:11, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
I was actually referring to the final two sentences (My great great grandfathers were one of the founders and one of the first people to bring the Torah to this synagogue. As the descendant of the co-founders of this shul, I should know a thing or two.) I've left a note on his talk page as he perhaps might know the answer to a few of the things we've mentioned. Anyways, please let me know what you find out in October. Khoikhoi 01:19, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Ultras in Taijikistan

All the info on the prominences is here [8]. A list of all ultras in asia would be far to big (654 mountains) but if you want to create one for central asian republics then go ahead. Remember to link to it from Ultra in the lists section. For info here is the entire list of ultras [9] ----GreatestrowereverTalk Page 12:00, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Uzbek districts

Hello! Thank you for your assistance with the Districts of Uzbekistan article. Would you be able to assist me in what districts have which names? The map I took the information from is all in Uzbek or Russian, and I don't speak or understand either one. Rarelibra (talk) 14:18, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Maybe we can do it that way - I can send a map of each province with a number in each district, and you can send it back with a numbered list? :) Rarelibra (talk) 14:41, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Re Fruit fool

Thanks for your suggestions for the article. Today I sent my source on Gooseberry fool and a quote (1658, quoted in article) to OED for possible inclusion in the next edition of the dictionary. Apparently the entry on "Fool" is very badly out of date as it was written for the first edition back in the 1890s. It hasn't been updated since. So the etymology is still an open question. I'll leave it as it is for now though. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shieldfire (talkcontribs) 15:28, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Dushanbe synagogue

Hi Zvi, this is very sad to hear. Thank you for updating the article, do you know if the government has built a new synagogue for Dushanbe's Jewish community? I think it was suggested that they might not, meaning that now the city's Jews have no place to go to services. Khoikhoi 00:59, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, I agree that it could be shortened, we could limit the "news update" style of the demolition section and make it more encyclopedic. However, I am very busy at the moment and unfortunately cannot contribute significantly to the article. Hopefully eventually. Khoikhoi 20:31, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Re:Laz people

Dear Zlerman. I'm sorry for a late reply. This is a very problematic user with multiple accounts and ip clons. Of course, the figures provided by those sources are grossly exaggerated and I will try to fix that, but the issue is really difficult to deal with. Kind regards, --KoberTalk 09:49, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

Talk page of Tajiks article

Hi there. I just want to point out that the Tajiks article Talk page could use an archiving. I don't know how to do that. Can you do it please? Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. I think a good thing to do is to archive everything before the year 2008, that is at the topic "Relevancy of current colloquial name when item linked". Thanks.

I placed a level 1 warning on the user's talk page. At the very least, the user should be providing an edit summary if not a discussion on the talk page. If the user continues the edit without any edit summary, we'll escalate the warning levels and report if needed. I'm really not sure what the purpose was to removing the content about it being a former British colony. The editor made other edits that I didn't revert earlier except for some formatting that got messed up, probably inadvertently. Hopefully the warning on the talk page will prompt the editor to go to the talk page. Kman543210 (talk) 14:26, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Massoud as a Tajik

Tajik is a wonderful editor, often I work with him on many things. But to be honest, he is somewhat of a historical revisionist on these issues (ie, Pan-Iranist), and often likes to deny the opinions of secular scholarship on the Tajik ethnic group, and prefers to think in the classical sense of the term Tajik, rather than on contemporary terms, which in some ways is understandable because Tajik itself isn't necessarily a term that has always existed as it does today. As you have probably seen, he likes to minimize the differences between Persians in Iran and Tajiks elsewhere as much as possible on Wikipedia. While these edits do much needed counterbalancing, I wouldn't rely on him for this issue. His view of Massoud may be a little more politically driven than is readily visible. He is right in that we should have prominent Tajiks, but to choose solely prominent Tajiks from the past and not from the present shows he totally disagrees with the contemporary definition of Tajik, that is, of a separate ethnic and linguistic group. If we can find supporting his decision to keep Massoud out of this, I'm fine, but until then, I won't take his word for it. In the end, Massoud was a Tajik who was prominent, and for me that puts the issue at rest. Should we take Gandhi out of Gujarati since that was not his main focus? No. Or should we take out almost everyone we have because they may have never referred to themselves using the term Tajik, and add people born in Iran who did refer to themselves using that term? This kind of logic gets us lost. --Enzuru 04:35, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

Ah, I dislike my point being proven, sometimes. --Enzuru 04:36, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Coming from an Afghani perspective, which may itself be biased, I don't know of any Tajik who is more prominent than Massoud both among Tajiks and the international community, especially among Americans. While we can certainly add those people, is there any strong reason for taking out Massoud? --Enzuru 07:17, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
I am confused about what I said was offensive? --Enzuru 02:51, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Wholesale moves from "Cuisine of ..." to adjectival form

You have undertaken a monumental job, but in my opinion before making such bold massive changes, you should have discussed it with the relevant audience on WikiProject Food and Drink. Some "foodies" may have thought differently. Needless to say, I hope you are implementing the change consistently across all cuisines. Good luck. --Zlerman (talk) 02:14, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Bold yes, massive, no. I've only moved about a dozen. :) I plan to wait and see if any objections come in before continuing. Thank you for your support.
By the way, by which method did you notice them? I'm just curious if we use the same monitoring techniques.
The Transhumanist 02:32, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
  • The cuisines that I regularly work own (Tajik, Uzbek) came up on my watchlist this morning. Then I looked in your contributions and saw the rest of the seemingly endless list. Yes, I support your systematization effort, but I still think you should put a note on WikiProject Food and Drink -- especially if you are looking for feedback. If you don't want to do it yourself, I can do it for you, but we must alert everybody. --Zlerman (talk) 02:40, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
You used the word "own". A curious typo.  :)
By the way, no thanks. I decline. I'd rather move on to something else that doesn't involve a proposal process. Post a proposal if you plan to implement the changes yourself. But count me out. I'm done. Cheers. The Transhumanist 02:57, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
  • Please don't leave the job unfinished! Forget about the "proposal process", but eventually please finish the process systematically. Otherwise, this will just create further confusion. --Zlerman (talk) 03:03, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Using WP:POP, run your cursor over the links at User:The Transhumanist/Cuisine by country list - you'll see it's not that big of a task. I agree with you that the current naming, split between the adjectival and "Cuisine of" naming conventions, is confusing (and raises the question of why some country cuisines have their own special name and others don't). Younger students may become confused as to what they're actually called. Since you believe consistency is important, I'll take a look at the remainder on a case-by-case basis as I come across them in the future. Maybe starting in a week or so. Thank you for your feedback.
