Simple English[edit]

That's ok, I don't think there is any need to strike through as wik has already read your comments. OTOH you may want to do it in case anyone reading it jumps to the same conclusion I did,theresa knott 17:58, 7 May 2004 (UTC)

I thought that being the flag of two different organisations, it was identified as a European flag rather than just one representing EU or CoE members. But I don't feel that strongly about it. Warofdreams 13:37, 4 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Though I do not think users should be obligated to explain their votes, I would still like answer your question. Åland is located between Finland and Sweden and is less than 50 kilometers away from both countries. As a semi-independent region of Finland, Åland has a special membership status within the European Union. The cultural heritage of Åland is primarily Swedish, but also has Finnish influences. Politically and economically, that puts Åland within the European Union and thus Europe. Geographically, Åland is located in very close proximity to two Northern European countries. Finally, language and culture firmly tie Åland to Europe.
Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan can only lay claim to status as European nations from the broadest possible interpertation of "Europe". Politically, with the exception of the politically castrated Council of Europe, neither nation can lay claim to being politically within Europe. Furthermore, the style of goverance in these two countries more closely reflect Central Asian standards. Economically, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are lesser developed countries that retain a strong state presence in the economy, and have weak trade links within Europe. Cultural ties between Europe, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan are weak at best. Historically, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have not been players in European history except as part of either the Russian Empire or the Soviet Union. Geographically, they lie on the outermost periphery of what some geographers define as Europe. I would hesitate to define Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan as within Europe geographically.

The Humungous Image Tagging Project[edit]
Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. Article Licensing[edit]
Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Akrotiri and Dhekelia vote[edit]
I urge you to reconsider your vote on the inclusion of Akrotiri and Dhekelia as dependencies in Europe at Template talk:Sovereign states of Europe/Archive 1. The CIA World Factbook now lists them [1] as dependencies of the UK and has separate entries for the two ([2] & [3].) They also have this note posted on the main page [4]:
- Recent confirmation that the United Kingdom Government administers the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia on Cyprus as dependencies (and not as lease areas like the US Guantanamo Bay Naval Station in Cuba) has required a changing of their status and their addition to the Factbook as new entities.
