Hey. I was going around looking at featured portals and stumbled on Portal:Literature. It looks rather unmaintained, and has two dead sections. I just wanted to bring it up to an FP director, and you're the one that's edited more recently. Cheers, Sven Manguard Wha? 16:31, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi,

Please forgive me for this intrusion. This comment of yours at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Aircraft#Images_as_a_source appears to have caused some offence, whether intentionally or otherwise. Also, barring a reply from you and/or a response that the editors involved are satisfied with, a few of them and I have come to an agreement that it will be best to have an uninvolved administrator remove extraneous rights for the time being, pending further discussion. Way too many manual closing steps

Way too many manual closing steps at WP:FPORTC and at Wikipedia:Featured portal review, any ideas on how to make this process for closing these simpler? — Cirt (talk) 15:05, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:SAT Airlines logo.gif)

Thanks for uploading File:SAT Airlines logo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:49, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

Hello Ohana

Could you possibly give me a hand on the Chinese wiki? In order to have a unified login at commons, I need to have my user name (User:Ched) registered at the Chinese wiki as well. I don't speak the language, and don't know how to request such a thing. Any input would be greatly appreciated. — Ched :  ?  21:54, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Based on the wikischolar outcomes...

I think a simple guideline for teachers may be of the form:

  • Assign one "moderator" for every 9 students in your class who are asked to edit. The moderator's task should be reviewing the edits of the others, helping them to meet editorial, copyright, and citation standards.
  • Assign one "meta-moderator" for every 9 moderators in your class. The meta-moderator's task should be to follow discussions about the class's work on the wiki (on meta-pages and project-pages), and to update a page describing the class project and summarizing its progress and outcomes.

I think any uni student - even a first-year with limited writing experience - could be an effective mod or meta-mod. They simply have to think about being one; and then other students in the class need to understand that their fellow-students work depends on the quality of their own. It's a simply matter of asking each class to capture the whole vertical editorial process. – SJ + 23:15, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello. I have secured the support of two experienced portal reviewers (AGK and Cirt) and believe that Portal:Sport is ready for promotion. I would greatly appreciate it if you could process it in in the next day or so, as it may be the difference between staying in the Wikicup and bowing out in this round. Sven Manguard Wha? 07:05, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

re About closing steps for featured portal promotions

I respectfully disagree, they add unnecessary work output and haven't historically been well maintained in the past. — Cirt (talk) 19:31, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Addendum: Of course, feel free to continue to maintain those pages if you wish to, it's not a prohibition by any means, just no longer a mandatory closing step, is all. :) — Cirt (talk) 19:34, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
Perhaps so, but it's a lot to maintain Portal:Contents, and unfortunately it's not actively maintained enough for it to be worthwhile to make it a mandatory step of the promotion process. If others wish to do so, that's more the better, however. :) — Cirt (talk) 19:43, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
Here was one of the older discussions. I think Bencherlite (talk · contribs) had some good ideas about this, I've asked for comment again. Maybe we should move this discussion to a more central location? — Cirt (talk) 19:47, 1 May 2013 (UTC)
If it's highly visited, maybe we could do a quick fix and redirect it to WP:FPORT. :) — Cirt (talk) 19:58, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Zorotypus impolitus

Hi OhanaUnited,

In this link, the writer wrote about Zorotypus impolitus an obscure but extraordinary ground louse that it does not have a Wikipedia article.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn23585-zoologger-the-tiny-insect-with-the-massive-sperm.html

So in response to his indirect plea I created it. It has awesome DYK potential. However some basic info is not available from the article or from the journal article abstract which is the only thing I can access from India. I need the full text of this article to search for essential details such as "author" & 'Year described" etc.

http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs00114-013-1055-0#

It appears that this is open access in some places. I tried with proxy but had no success. Can you please help?

AshLin (talk) 03:18, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi Andrew, so good to hear from you again, my friend. My editting is limited now :( and I try to do things which I feel add more value, if I can. WikiProject Good Articles Recruitment Centre

Hello! Now, some of you might be wondering why there is a Good article icon with a bunch of stars around (to the right). The answer? WikiProject Good articles will be launching a Recruitment Centre very soon! The centre will allow all users to be taught how to review Good article nominations by experts just like you! However, in order for the Recruitment Centre to open in the first place, we need some volunteers:
  • Recruiters: The main task of a recruiter is to teach users that have never reviewed a Good article nomination how to review one. To become a recruiter, all you have to do is meet this criteria. If we don't get at least 5-10 recruiters to start off with, the Recruitment Centre will not open. If interested, make sure you meet the criteria, read the process and add your name to the list of recruiters. (One of the great things about being a recruiter is that there is no set requirement of what must be taught and when. Instead, all the content found in the process section is a guideline of the main points that should be addressed during a recruitment session...you can also take an entire different approach if you wish!) If you think you will not have the time to recruit any users at this time but are still interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still add your name to the list of recruiters but just fill in the "Status" parameter with "Not Available".
  • Co-Director: The current Director for the centre is me (Dom497). Another user that would be willing to help with some of the tasks would be helpful. Tasks include making sure recruiters are doing what they should be (teaching!), making sure all recruitments are archived correctly, updating pages as needed, answering any questions, and distributing the feedback form. If interested, please contact me (Dom497).
  • Nominators, please read this: If you are not interested in becoming a recruiter, you can still help. In some cases a nominator may have an issue with an "inexperienced" editor (the recruitee) reviewing one of their nominations. To minimize the chances of this happening, if you are fine with a recruitee reviewing one of your nominations under the supervision of the recruiter, please add your name to the list at the bottom of this page. By adding your name to this list, chances are that your nomination will be reviewed more quickly as the recruitee will be asked to choose a nomination from the list of nominators that are OK with them reviewing the article.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing this program bring new reviewers to the Good article community and all the positive things it will bring along.

A message will be sent out to all recruiters regarding the date when the Recruitment Centre will open when it is determined. The message will also contain some further details to clarify things that may be a bit confusing.--Dom497 (talk)

Hello! Now, some of you might have already received a similar message a little while ago regarding the Recruitment Centre, so if you have, there is no need to read the rest of this. Sandbox disruption

For some reason, helpful editors continue to migrate my students' draft articles out of their sandboxes to AfC, and then into the main space, despite the presence of the sandbox template and the course template. This is a major pain. Can it be prevented? Or at least reversed? Medmyco (talk) 04:13, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

I'd just rather not have unvetted info go up on the main page. Also, if they work in the sandbox, random helpful editors should not be touching their stuff as they develop it. Ideally. Problem is that some of these very bare stubs have already been selected for speedy deletion by other helpful editors. I'd rather not have a student working on an article that promptly gets deleted before they've had a chance to finish their work. That's why I thought the sandbox was a better idea. I'd hoped that having course banners on the talk pages of articles would help, but its not clear that it does. Anyway, I'm trying my best to keep it all together! Requesting your opinion

Hi. Can you offer your opinion in this consensus discussion? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 18:05, 3 November 2013 (UTC)

Argh

Hi, can you possibly help me out again? I've just had some sort of major blip on my PC and I've lost the copy of Hiley, Nicholas (1994). "“You can't believe a word you read”: Newspaper‐reading in the British Expeditionary Force, 1914—1918". Studies in Newspaper and Periodical History 2 (1-2). doi:10.1080/13688809409357904 that you provided a couple of days ago. Worse things have happened - see the mess I got into at Valentine Williams - but I really could do with seeing that journal again. For reasons unknown, I seem not to have lost the later journal that you so kindly provided. Weird or what? I'm going to flip to an alternate PC until I can work out what has gone wrong - suspect a faulty disk. - Sitush (talk) 15:51, 16 November 2013 (UTC).

I've grabbed it again. I apologise for having put you to so much trouble. - Sitush (talk) 09:05, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Argh for me too

I have a similar problem. Downloaded the article you so generously posted, but when I wanted to start working on the species I found out the document is broken. Probably a problem when I downloaded it. It's this one:

  • Razowski & Wojtusiak, 2008: Notes on Ernocornutia Razowski, 1988 (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae: Euliini) with descriptions of seven new species from Ecuador, Zootaxa 1720: 46-56 [2]

If you could upload it again, I would be very thankful... Sorry for the trouble. Ruigeroeland (talk) 18:24, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Got it, thanks! Ruigeroeland (talk) 22:48, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

Sister projects

Hi Ohana, as the editor of the Signpost, I stumbled on this old page today. Would you be interested in reviving it and maybe redoing some of the older interviews to see what has changed in the last few years? Kind regards, Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 04:51, 22 November 2013 (UTC)

Some stroopwafels for you!

For all the help you do on WP:RX. Keep up the wonderful work! Yobol (talk) 17:43, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive

Hello! A GAN Backlog Drive will begin in less than 4 days!

In past Backlog Drives, the goal was to reduce the backlog of Good article nominations. In the upcoming drive, another goal will be added - raising as much money as we can for the Wikimedia Foundation. How will this work? Well, its pretty simple. Any user interested in donating can submit a pledge at the Backlog Drive page (linked above). The pledge should mention the amount of money the user is willing to donate per review. For example, if a user pledges 5 cents per review and 100 nominations are reviewed, the total donation amount is $5.00.

At the time this message was sent out, two users have submitted pledges for a total of 8 cents per review. All pledges, no matter how much money, are greatly appreciated. Also, in no way is this saying you must make a pledge.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or leave a message on the Backlog Drive talk page. And remember, there are less than 4 days before the drive starts!--EdwardsBot (talk) 03:17, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

GAN December 2013 Backlog Drive

Hello! Just a friendly reminder that the GAN Backlog Drive has begun and will end on December 31, 2013!

If you know anyone outside of the WikiProject that may be interested, feel free to invite them to the drive!

If you have any questions or want to comment about something regarding the drive, post them here--EdwardsBot (talk) 00:10, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thanks, Andrew! Also, I had to give you some strawberries, since you once gave me delicious strawberries. :) Jami (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:00, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

Your possible experience with graph apps

Hello OhanaUnited; Recently, I had noticed that you are an advanced programmer and I was wondering if you have ever created graphs for use in illustrating high traffic wikipages? My interest is in creating a four color graph of 8 columns of different heights. Do you have any similar experience with such visualization graphics? BillMoyers (talk) 23:54, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello OhanaUnited; Thanks for getting back. The table of numbers is below and I meant it to go on the high traffic page for "Wikipedia" in the new sub-section for "Internal Quality Control". Putting in the table of numbers alone looked stale and I thought a 4-color graph would be more visual and graphic. It seems that the 4-colors could be used for wikipedia "Importance" for the four levels (1 to 4, best to lowest), while the Y-axis would be eight columns (FA, FL, A, GA, B, C, Start, Stub) from 1 to 8, best to lowest, with the graphed height corresponding to quantity of pages for each one, respectively. The idea was to use a 4-color graph on each of 8 columns in 2 dimensions. The eight columns would be for each quality gradation, and the 4 colors would be for each level of importance. The 4 colors on each column would be over-lapping, tough slightly staggered, to avoiding "blurring" of one color directly on top of another color. If I need to clarify, I can do this as needed, since I am trying to describe a picture using words. Here is the graph:

Hello OhanaUnited, and good suggestion. I am not an expert programmer and was told that Excel does not import to Wikipedia in any convenient way. This link (below) in its various figures show the Excel options and given that you're an advanced programmer possibly you could look especially at figure 3. My original thought was to do a 3D graph of this kind of "skyscraper" type of graphs (for lack of a better description) which would have one "skyscraper" of different height for each element in the 4 by 8 matrix I previously described of importance versus quality at wikipedia. That is, the first "skyscraper" height would be the number of high importance FA articles, followed by the second "skyscraper" height which would be the number of high importance FL articles, etc. Anyway, I am getting ahead of the main issue. Is it easier to do in 2D or in 3D? And, do you know if the import problem of excel to Wikipedia can be solved? Here is the link: When Graphic Design Goes Badly. BillMoyers (talk) 07:31, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
Hello OhanaUnited, and thanks for your insight on using Excel. My knowledge is nothing like an expert programmer and I have never made anything like this. Could I offer to do all the tedious typing of the data from this table above into any format you like, and appeal to you to take a stab at either the 2D graph of 4 colors I described, or the "Skycraper" graph I just mentioned? Which ever one is easiest. My thought was to put it on the left side of the high traffic page for "Wikipedia" in the new "Internal Quality Control" subsection. It would be only for the first 8 rows and the first 4 columns. I understand your point about the other info having value, yet the smaller version would still be informative and highly graphic. Can you help, maybe in your spare time or whenever time allows? (Good holidays for New Years either way.) BillMoyers (talk) 22:48, 24 December 2013 (UTC)

Fungus photos

Andrew, thanks for cleaning up the photos I posted. However I can no longer see them in any of the articles. Does something need to be changed with the path? Medmyco (talk) 18:36, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

I double-checked a couple of the articles and the thumbnails still do not display, but when you click on the place-holder icon it takes you to the photo. Does it need a |thumb| or something? Medmyco (talk) 00:03, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
Sure, try Aphanoascus fulvescens and Chrysosporium keratinophilum. Medmyco (talk) 03:27, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
