Speedy deletion of Yo daddy[edit]

A tag has been placed on Yo daddy requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. chiefhuggybear (talk) 23:14, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Digicrime[edit]

A tag has been placed on Digicrime requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Accurizer (talk) 23:33, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chat on talk pages[edit]

A page for yourself[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia! I saw that you created a page for yourself at Marshall Williams2, but it is going to be (or already is) deleted because you put it in the wrong place. The main namespace (that is, article names with no prefix) is for encyclopedic articles only, so articles about yourself are inappropriate there. However, every user is also given a place to create a page about themselves in the User namespace (article names with the prefix User:). The place where you can create a page about yourself is User:Marshall Williams2. Go ahead and create that and write whatever you like about that there, and please read Your First Article to help get a handle on what is appropriate on the main section of Wikipedia. -- Tyler (talk) 13:58, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Real help[edit]

Most of the help comes from Help:Contents, however there is lots of content and is a bit daunting to find anything in. A simple page to see most of the tricks is Wikipedia:Cheatsheet. To sign your post on a talk page type four ~'s and nothing else (it will automatically turn into a signature with your username, etc.) A good place to try things out (like signatures, formatting, etc.) is Wikipedia:Sandbox. +mt 14:39, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My first question[edit]

How do you make a signautre correctly? I already tried doing ~~~~, and it didn't work. Please message me the answer! Thanks. --~~~~Marshall Williams2

First, don't enclose it in nowiki tags, otherwise it won't process. Second, try to put a space before the four tildes, (and also a space afterwords if you write anything after the signature). -- Tyler (talk) 15:08, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How long[edit]

I saw your message on my talk page and I am not sure what you are asking. This is an encyclopedia, if the article is encylopedic it will probably be here as long as wikipedia is here. If the article does not meet the standards for inclusion then it may be here for a short time. Jons63 (talk) 04:35, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is no set number of characters that you need to have to get the article to stay. It is the content. The article should clearly identify the subject to someone who doesn't know anything about the subject of the article. It must also explain how the subject is notable. Both of these things should be backed up with reliable sources so that other people can verify the information in the article. If you haven't seen it before, a good place to start is the page about writing your first article. I hope this helps, if you have any more questions let me know and I will try to help. Speedy deletion of Digicrime[edit]

Thank you for experimenting with Wikipedia. Your test worked, and the page that you created has been or soon will be deleted. Please use the sandbox for any other tests you want to do. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia.

Speedy deletion of Fitlinxx[edit]

A tag has been placed on Fitlinxx, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam as well as the Wikipedia:Business' FAQ for more information.

Images[edit]

I am not an expert at all the syntax of adding images. Do what I do and just follow the ways others have done to add images and play around a bit until they look OK. Good luck. --Bduke (talk) 22:10, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! There are two steps to adding images, both of which have been explained better elsewhere than I could do here. But here's the basics. First, be sure the image you want has been uploaded to Wikipedia. The information on uploading can be found at WP:UPLOAD. Now that your image is on Wikipedia, you'll probably want to insert it into an article. The correct syntax for inserting an image into an article can be found at WP:Extended image syntax. Those are the steps, but you'll probably have to play around some in order to get the image to look the way you want it to. I hope this helps and let me know if you have any questions! TNX-Man 14:50, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Digicrime[edit]

I also wanted to let you know that I have proposed that your article, Digicrime, be deleted. I have done this because I do not feel it meets the notability guidelines laid out in WP:CORP. However, I would be happy to set up a sandbox page for you so you can work on the article outside of the main articlespace. Cheers! TNX-Man 14:53, 9 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. You need to upload the image to wikipedia first. WP:UPIMAGE will help you. --Ged UK (talk) 19:07, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In the second box under the search box on the left-hand side is an upload file link. This will take you to Special:Upload where you can upload images. Be careful with images though, copyright is very important. I'm no expert on images, I've never uploaded one! I'll help as best I can. Ged UK (talk) 19:37, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for making a report on Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Reporting and removing vandalism is vital to the functioning of Wikipedia and all users are encouraged to revert, warn, and report vandalism. However, it appears that the editor you reported may not have engaged in vandalism, or the user was not sufficiently or appropriately warned. Please note there is a difference between vandalism and unhelpful or misguided edits made in good faith. If they continue to vandalise after a recent final warning, please re-report it. Thank you! Userboxes[edit]

Userboxes are a lot of fun, but I really haven't the faintest idea of how to create them. What I do is look around at different users' pages to find userboxes I like. Then I click on the "edit this page" tab at the top and find the associated code, copy/paste to my user page, and voila!; I have a new userbox. One userful thing I've found is {{userboxtop}} and {{userboxbottom}}. This keeps all of the boxes in one column. Just put the userboxes you want in between those two templates. I hope this helps. Cheers! TNX-Man 23:20, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Poole (band)[edit]

The problem was <nowiki> at the beginning. That doesn't normally have any use within articles - it's for use on talk pages if you want to explain how to use something like a template, for instance {{underconstruction}}, without it being expanded by the wiki software in the usual way. You achieve that by putting <nowiki> before and </nowiki> after. I've taken it out, and now your article is laid out as you intended. But I'm afraid it is still likely to be deleted as it does nothing to show that Poole are notable - see Notability (music) for what that means for bands. You can find advice on editing at Wikipedia:Cheatsheet and at How to edit a page. One useful tip: after you make a change, use the "Show preview" button to see what the effect has been; if it's not what you wanted, change something and try "Show preview" again. You needn't click "Save page" till it's as you want it. I had to use "Show preview" four times before I was ready to save this to your talk page. Speedy deletion of Poole (band)[edit]

A tag has been placed on Poole (band) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Your request for help[edit]

I'm sorry not to reply sooner, but I had already gone to bed - I guess I live in a different time-zone from you. I see the article Poole (band) has been deleted again, and I'm afraid there is really no point your continuing to put it in, because the band is not notable - look at WP:BAND to see what sort of band qualifies for an article - charted hit, international tour, two or more albums on a major label... If you can't provide evidence that Poole meets the standard there, an article about them is not going to survive. Look at some of the links in the Welcome paragraph above, and at the guide to writing Your First Article for more advice about writing articles. The List of bad article ideas is worth a look, too.

In any case, I'm not sure what you wanted me to do that you couldn't do yourself - I'm not an admin, but it doesn't take an admin to put underline markers on, which is what you asked for - just click "Edit this page", type in <u> and </u> where you want them, click "Show preview" to see it looks right, and then "Save page". For how to add footnotes, see WP:Footnotes, and generally, you can find advice at WP:HELP and links from there.

Hyperlinks and "nowiki" markers[edit]

Sorry not to reply sooner, but I guess I live in a different time zone from you - your message was at 02:15 my time.

The reason the hyperlink doesn't show in your post on my talk page is that you put <nowiki> ... </nowiki> markers round most of the message. Normally, everything you type is interpreted by the wiki software before it is displayed; that's how double square brackets get turned into a hyperlink and double curly brackets into a template. What <nowiki> ... </nowiki> markers do is, tell the wiki software not to do any interpreting of the characters between them. The only time you need to use them is if you are explaining to someone, for instance, how to put {{db-author}} on a page of his he wants deleted, and you want to show him what to type without the actual template being displayed.

One other thing: when you post a message on a talk page, it saves having to type out your full name and so on, and provides a useful link back to your talk page, if you end your message with four tilde characters ~~~~ (I have put <nowiki> ... </nowiki> round those four to stop them being interpreted) which the wiki software expands for you into a signature with your username and the time and date - like this (and I'm not going to put <nowiki> ... </nowiki> round these: JohnCD (talk) 08:35, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More about "nowiki" markers[edit]

Articles, and messages on talk pages, exist in two forms - (a) what you type, and what you see after you click "edit", and (b) what is shown on the screen when a page is displayed. The difference is that when a screen is displayed the wiki software "interprets" what has been typed. Mostly, it just displays the same thing, but some special codes cause it to do special things: for instance, double square brackets it turns into a wikilink, blue if it can find a page with that name, red otherwise. Double curly brackets are expanded into a "template", often quite complicated, depending on what's inside them. Angle brackets indicate markers, so that <u> ... </u> underlines what is between them.

You can find this explained at Wikipedia:Cheatsheet and in more detail in detail at Wikipedia:How to edit a page.

Very occasionally, one wants to prevent the wiki software from interpreting the special characters. This is most likely to happen if you are explaining to someone what he needs to type, for instance in adding a template like {{db-author}} - you don't want him to see the actual template, so you put "nowiki" markers round it to tell the wiki software not to expand it, but just to display it as written.

The problems you have been having, for instance when you couldn't make a wikilink display properly in your last message to me, are because for some reason you have been putting in "nowiki" markers where they aren't needed, preventing the wiki software from working properly. If you haven't actually been typing them in, I think you must have been clicking the button above the editing box which looks like a "W" with a red ring round it and a bar across. When you click that, it puts "nowiki" markers round whatever text is selected at the time.

My advice is, forget about "nowiki" markers. They are only needed in the special case I described. And try practising different markups in a sandbox, using the "Preview" button to see what the effect is.

I am going to be away for a time - I've put a "vacation" message at the top of my talk page, which I'll take off when I come back.

Your question[edit]

There is no list of warned people that I know of. Just look at their talk page and/or talk page history. Folks typically need a final warning before reporting to WP:AIV. If you're doing much vandal patrol, you should probably get WP:TW if you don't already have it. It's a pretty powerful tool that you can use to issue warnings efficiently. (among other things). I hope this helps. Toddst1 (talk) 22:47, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly the things you were calling vandalism were not vandalism, but his full name. Also, your attempt to have the article deleted could also be construed as vandalism too. Nowiki, Twinkle etc.[edit]

Hi. This is to answer your two messages now I'm back after some time away in the real world. I think you are having problems because you keep putting "nowiki" brackets in your messages. They aren't necessary. They only have the very specialised use I described, where you want to prevent the wiki software doing its usual work. You seem to think every message has to be enclosed in them - your message headed "problems still persist" contains THREE pairs, and NONE of them are necessary. My advice is, forget about "nowiki" brackets.

I'm afraid I can't help with Twinkle - I've never used it. It's incompatible with the Zonealarm firewall I use, and also I have an impression that it's rather easy to make mistakes with it.

User page - I'm not sure what your problem is - what do you mean by "the name of the hyperlink" that you want to show?

Kevin McCurley[edit]

Do you have a source for the claim that Kevin McCurley works for Southwest Cyberport? He subscribes to their Internet service; that doesn't make him an employee. According to his web page he's a research scientist at Google. You've also removed his middle name before (sourced to the Math Genealogy site) and put "Thief Scientist" in his persondata as if that were a name rather than a joke title. I would ask you to please exercise more care in your edits. Ntsimp (talk) 13:41, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can read right on its main page that DigiCrime is hosted by SWCP, not owned by them. Like I said, McCurley is a customer of that ISP—definitely not an employee. There's no way on earth Google would allow one its research scientists to take an outside job with an ISP! And I can't see any company taking the risk of officially creating/sponsoring a site like DigiCrime. It's obviously a personal project. Also, the "Thief Scientist" bit is a joke, like a lot of what's on DigiCrime. No one actually calls McCurley "Thief Scientist". This is an illustration of why reliable sources are so important on Wikipedia. You read some things on DigiCrime and added your interpretation of them to the Kevin McCurley article, instead of finding a source that made those claims. Finally, about adding an image. It would certainly be nice to have one, but where would we get one? I don't know McCurley, and I'm never likely to meet him to take a photo. You can't just copy the picture from the IACR site, for example, as it is protected by copyright. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to discuss these issues instead of edit warring. Ntsimp (talk) 04:52, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You misunderstand. Yes, DigiCrime belongs to Kevin McCurley, not to Southwest Cyberport. It's a personal site of his. He works for Google, not for SWCP. SWCP provides hosting for his website. That's all. Just quit saying he works for SWCP, or that SWCP owns DigiCrime. Ntsimp (talk) 00:58, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you find significant coverage of DigiCrime in reliable sources, then feel free to add the information to McCurley's article. The article doesn't belong to any one person. Ntsimp (talk) 01:04, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There were two problems: you had missed out "Image:" at the beginning, and you had the capitalisation wrong - you had "Pspeed.jpg" but the image title was actually "PSpeed.JPG". I've fixed it. JohnCD (talk) 09:13, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand[edit]

What was that message that you sent me about? TheGoodLocust (talk) 01:14, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why would I do that? I don't know anything about that article. TheGoodLocust (talk) 01:19, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to add a link then the easiest way for me to explain is this:
1) type in the url
2) highlight the url
3) Click the 4th symbol from the left, it is a globe, it will put ref tags around the url to link it
Good luck. TheGoodLocust (talk) 01:33, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image problems[edit]

The Need for Speed image was OK after I fixed it here, but then a Bot removed it because, as a screenshot, it was copyright to the software creator and so only allowable in Wikipedia as a FAIR USE image, and it seems they are not allowed in user space. Also, as no article uses it, it will get deleted shortly. About98.JPG looks OK to me, if a bit blurred and out of focus, but as another screenshot it may go the same way. JohnCD (talk) 11:45, 9 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Digicrime[edit]

I have not made a hyperlink to digicrime.com and I strongly suggest that you don't either. When I connected to the site to see what it was, I got (a) a screen saying "It is now unsafe to turn on your computer", (b) an anti-virus alert for a file called "Hoax.Java.Bluescreen", and (c) a message from Firefox that "Some plugins required by this page have been blocked for your protection". I looked up "Hoax.Java.Bluescreen" and it seems it is a harmless "joke", but many real viruses call themselves "hoax"; maybe the whole thing is a joke, but I think it's a joke in extremely poor taste and would be very alarming for an inexperienced user.

Answers to your other questions later. JohnCD (talk) 09:55, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • P.S. On further consideration, I have removed the reference to Digicrime from the McCurley article in case unsuspecting readers might be tempted to try it. I have told User:Ntsimp, the other author, what I have done and why. JohnCD (talk) 14:08, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More answers[edit]

To make a hyperlink, put the full url including "http://" inside single square brackets. That will appear as just a number. If you want something else displayed rather than just a number, leave a single space after the end of the url and then, before the closing square bracket, put the text you want displayed.

For a reference, enclose what you want in <ref> and </ref> brackets, and then at the bottom of the article put ==References== and, just below it, either <references/> or {{Reflist}}. That will cause the reference list to be displayed.

All that is explained at WP:Cheatsheet which is a good place to look for answers to questions of this kind, and gives links to more detail on WP:How to edit a page. To make sure you know how to get the effect you want, experiment in a sandbox and use the "Show preview" button.

Page protection is explained at WP:PROTECT and the place to ask for it is WP:RFPP, but you have to give a good reason. You say you want "protection for articles about companies so that admins shouldn't edit them" - you can't protect anything from admins, because they can remove as well as set page protection. Maybe you mean WP:Office actions by Wikimedia Foundation staff, but they are for very rare and exceptional circumstances, usually for legal reasons.

No, I'm not an admin.

For picture galleries, see WP:Picture gallery and WP:Gallery.

Finally, a word of advice: people are willing to help, but they may become less willing if it seems you are not at least trying to look things up yourself before asking. For instance, I suggested earlier that if you want to know about something on Wikipedia, the first thing to try is typing "WP:" in the search box followed by the name of what you are interested in: you could have answered your last two questions for yourself by going to WP:Page protection and WP:Picture gallery. Again, you just referred me to "the Kevin Mccurley article, (I may have spelled this wrong)" - that leaves me to do the work of trying different spellings, when you could have checked first and given it to me right - or better still, given me a wikilink to Kevin McCurley so that I could go straight there. If you can't find the answer or don't understand it, by all means ask and people will be happy to help; but try looking for yourself first.

Copyright[edit]

You asked, Would it be against the rules of Wikipedia to say that you have copyright on an image even if you really don't? Yes, it would, don't even think about it - it could get Wikipedia into serious legal trouble with the real copyright owner, and it could get you blocked. JohnCD (talk) 15:33, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Still more answers[edit]

Wikipedia uses Free content material whenever possible, so that we can allow anyone else to copy and use it. When there isn't a free content image available, US copyright law allows a non-free one to be used under the "Fair use doctrine" which "allows limited use of copyrighted material without requiring permission from the rights holders, such as use for scholarship or review." But a Fair Use image on Wikipedia must be used in at least one article - just having it on your user page doesn't count as "scholarship or review". A screenshot you took of "Need for Speed" would be copyright to the authors of the game: it could be used as "fair use" in an article about the game (if no free-content image was available), but not just to decorate a user page. This is all explained in WP:Fair use.

I'm not sure what you mean by "what if I said one of my pictures were copyright even though they weren't?" If you take a picture, the copyright is yours, and you can say so, unless it's of something like a screen or a book where the copyright would belong to the author - in that case you can't say the copyright is yours. See WP:Copyrights and links from there.

Your "don't touch this" link - I don't recommend it. You would only be in trouble if somebody clicked on it and was worried by the "joke" warnings and virus hoax. I suppose you could then say "but I labelled it Don't touch!"; but the whole thing seems to me silly and pointless - like arranging a button on a wall marked "Don't press this" which squirts water over someone who does. If nobody clicks it, what's the point? and if somebody does, they may be frightened and then angry, and it's you they'll be angry with. JohnCD (talk) 15:13, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar[edit]

Thank you very much! I really appreciate that.

Article H - yes, it had been vandalised, but it was reverted quite soon.

Hoax virus - maybe it doesn't do any harm, but it's rather like firing a pistol at someone and then saying "don't worry, it was only a blank".

WP:ANI notice[edit]

Hello, this is a discussion about your editing at Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Something_ain.27t_right_here.. Please offer any comments there. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 23:25, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, not restoring. Your mainspace contributions are hardly encouraging; your image uploads can be summed up as of inferior quality and hardly usable for any page; WP is not a place for socialising. seicer | talk | contribs 21:39, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I'll add that welcoming users who haven't edited for years (or who's only edits were vandalism) like User talk:Aaaaaa or User talk:BORED LOL isn't particularly helpful. Also, just for an additional comment, being "chaotic" just mean it should be rewritten, not that it should be deleted. Deletion is for articles that could NEVER be worthy of inclusion; don't worry about that, it's a little complicated. If you are interested, have you considered asking for mentoring? -- Ricky81682 (talk) 19:50, 19 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Image:BIOS Setup Screen.jpg[edit]

A tag has been placed on Image:BIOS Setup Screen.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I5 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image which is not under a free license or in the public domain and it has not been used in any article for more than seven days.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:BIOS Setup Screen.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. SchmuckyTheCat (talk) 03:57, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images on your user page[edit]

I can see the "picture of the day" and one of some kind of basket. If you click on the red image names of the other two, you can see who deleted them and why: BIOS Setup Screen.jpg under WP:CSD#I5 because it was a screenshot and so copyright, as I explained above, and Pav3g.JPG under WP:CSD#I10 "not used in any article and have no foreseeable encyclopedic use." The point there is that what Wikipedia is about is building an encyclopedia and what goes on here should be helping do that; there's a certain amount of scope for building a user page and chatting with other users, but that's not what we're here for and Wikipedia doesn't want to host images that are not used in articles. Re: Twinnke[edit]

Hey Marshall Williams2. Thanks for the note, but I've actually talked to a few admins about that. It was they that suggested I make the note on the Twinkle page. Are there perhaps specific admins that are good at Twinkle troubleshooting I should contact? -FlyingToaster (talk) 17:34, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You would have a much better chance of a response if you went to Wikipedia talk:Twinkle. Individual admins aren't going to be particularly helpful, as it's extremely unlikely you'll find one who knows about the coding there. I see User:FlyingToaster has already posted there so I'd suggest seeing if you could add to that. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 02:58, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How to line up userboxes[edit]

The simplest way is to put {{boxboxtop|}} at the head of the list (notice the "pipe" - vertical-bar - character at the end) and {{boxboxbottom}} at the foot. Other options are explained at WP:Userboxes#Grouping userboxes. JohnCD (talk) 21:33, 22 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Why ask me? You can see for yourself. There's a long column lined up on the right, but the first five are in a separate block to the left of that. The reason for that is that (if you click "edit this page", you'll see) the next line after "User:UBX/Twinkle4" starts with a "pipe" (vertical bar) character. If you delete that, all your user-boxes will be in one column. I tried it with "Show preview" to check, but I'll leave it to you to make the change if you want to. JohnCD (talk) 19:52, 23 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User boxes/Chat rooms/Vandalism[edit]

Didn't you read my answer just above? Your user-boxes weren't in one column, because of a "pipe" character after the first five. Now I have removed it, and they are all in a single column. If you don't like that, you can undo my edit.

I wouldn't recommend editing the userboxes in WP:USERBOX, because other people who use them may like them as they are. What you could do is, put the one you want to change on your user page, or a sandbox, with "subst:" in front of it inside the curly brackets. Then when you save the page, what will go on is the whole code that generates the sandbox. Then you can edit that to make the changes you want, and copy the result to your user page.

I didn't know anything about a Wikipedia chatroom but following the principle of trying WP:Oogle to find out about Oogles, WP:Chatroom tells you about it. It seems there are several, using Internet Relay Chat (IRC), which is something I had heard of but decided (a) didn't sound useful and (b) was too complicated to bother with. You would have to set up an "IRC client." It looks as though WP:IRC tutorial will tell you more, if you want; but I won't be able to help.

If you have been accused of vandalism, you are allowed to blank the warning from your talk page - that's taken as meaning that you have read it. That doesn't remove it from the history of your talk page, though; there's no way to do that. If what you did wasn't intended as vandalism, the best thing to do is to post a reply explaining why on your talk page, just below the warning, starting with a * to indent it. The person who sent the warning will probably be watching your talk page, so he will see it.

JohnCD (talk) 09:59, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • To access IRC, you have to install on your computer something called an "IRC client". WP:IRC tutorial tells you more and gives links to more advice. I glanced through that some time ago; when I got to "Applying for a host cloak" I decided it sounded too complicated to be worth while. JohnCD (talk) 12:46, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Talk page for an IP[edit]

I stated the reason in the deletion log—it was failure to meet WP:NFCC; in this case, the image lacked a fair-use rationale. Do you want me to restore it so you can add it? Maxim(talk) 14:58, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Maxim(talk) 00:15, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I've re-deleted it. Maxim(talk) 00:21, 2 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Audio/Video upload[edit]

I'm afraid your question ("Err.. could you please provide the hyperlink on where you can upload audio and videos?") has me a bit puzzled. The process for putting audio and video on Wikipedia is:

  1. Convert it to ogg vorbis (for audio) or ogg theora (for video).
  2. Upload it. This is done the same way as audio and video, a process you have done many times before.
  3. Insert it into an article using the proper templates and/or mediawiki formatting.

Which of these are you having difficulty with? Raul654 (talk) 07:58, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whois / Donation[edit]

You can only do WHOIS on an IP user's address. Usually, it only tells you who the user's Internet Service Provider is, but sometimes it may narrow down to a school or education authority. So, for instance, to pick a random vandal from this morning, 198.82.62.96 is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State Univ. It's explained at WHOIS which has links to Whois services.

You can't find out anything about a user who has a Wikipedia account. User privacy is jealously guarded. There is a facility called Checkuser, but ony a very few trusted people have it, and it's used only to identify sockpuppets. You can ask for checkuser at WP:RFCU but you need to have very strong evidence - they will not use it for "fishing expeditions". The sort of result it gives is "these two (or more) users are certainly/probably/probably not the same person."

Donations: I'm sure they'd accept cash if it arrives - I don't know how safe sending cash through the mail is in the US.

Regards, JohnCD (talk) 14:35, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I got the reference wrong - it should be just WHOIS. Corrected above. JohnCD (talk) 17:16, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Donating[edit]

Yes, I think a check is a good idea, and I'm sure $3 will be gratefully received and is not at all disrespectful. "Mony a mickle maks a muckle" (Scottish dialect proverb meaning many little things make something big) - if every editor gave them $3 they'd be well off. Here's a useful tip: the red "Donate now" thing at the top of the screen is rather distracting, but you can switch it off by going to My preferences/Gadgets and checking "Suppress display of the fundraiser banner". JohnCD (talk) 14:54, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed it - the actual article name was "Demon dialing", the usual WP convention for titles is that only the first word has a capital, others only do if they are proper nouns - names etc. What you could have done is, experiment with different variations to see which worked - Demon dialing demon dialing Demon Dialing - in a sandbox, or even in the article itself, as long as you only used "Show preview" until you got it right. I don't know why "demon dialing" works and "Demon Dialing" doesn't. JohnCD (talk) 10:05, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DAB page / Rollback[edit]

Disambiguation (DAB) page - see WP:Disambiguation, which will point you to some examples. WP:Rollback is a facility you have to apply for, and you need a fair amount of experience before they will let you have it. Once it is enabled, it lets you with one click revert the last set of consecutive edits by one user. So if the last edits to a page were by user B, then user A, user A, user A, rollback would revert all userA's three edits and take the page back to the state user B left it. It is a powerful tool but can be quite dangerous: it is only to be used for vandalism, not content disputes, and if misused can be taken away. JohnCD (talk) 14:22, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reflists and golfballs[edit]

Reflists are a bit tricky. You put the references in the text of the article, each beside the bit it refers to, bracketed with <ref> ... </ref>;; then at the end of the article you put "==References==" and just below it "<references/>" - just like that, with a forward slash at the end (but without the quotes). That automatically produces a list of the references. If there are a lot of references, you can put "{{reflist}}" as an alternative to "<references/>" - the only diference is that they come out in smaller type. Find an article with a few references, click on edit, and (without actually editing) look at how they've done it. When you want to do it, try it out using "Show preview" till it comes out right.

Wikipedia goods - I'd think there would be some, but I had a quick look round and didn't find any. I have seen a picture of a T-shirt which said "Wikipedia is a reliable source" and then in small print "[citation needed]"; but I don't know if it was an official item. You could ask the Help desk, perhaps. JohnCD (talk) 13:55, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Found some! see here, then click on the "cafepress" link at the bottom. JohnCD (talk) 22:12, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Marshall,

I believe the image in question is unsuitable for Wikipedia, and I removed it because of the following reasons:

  • Image is off-centre and cut off
  • Image perspective is skewed (taken from a too close angle)
  • Glare obstructs view of editor contents
  • Editor is opening a binary file, which is not a very good illustration of the editor
  • Image is a photo, not a screenshot, which by nature provides inferior quality
  • Image is completely redundant, as there is already a screenshot of the MS-DOS Editor above in the article

The above reasons are why I removed the image from the article. Please upload a picture that corrects the above six points. Thanks, — Jeremy 21:46, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Undoing CSD[edit]

As long as it's not your article, you can just remove the {{db}} tag, especially if you put it on but have changed your mind. You should say why in the edit summary, e.g "RM db tag - subject seems notable." If you wrote the article, you shouldn't remove the {{db}} tag - put {{hangon}} underneath it, and explain on the talk page. JohnCD (talk) 14:31, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Austell, Georgia[edit]

Please see WP:PROD. Any editor can contest a proposed deletion for any reason, by removing the prod notice, in which case it should not be restored. In any case, inaccurate information is not usually a reason for deleting an entire article, as it can be fixed by correcting the inaccuracies or removing them. Please do not restore the prod template on this article again. Thanks, Jfire (talk) 20:41, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your question, yes. I am sure. As for Six Flags, it is indeed in unincorporated Cobb, but it has an Austell mailing address and zip code. --Mhking (talk) 21:33, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Austell was incorporated as a city. Note: http://www.austell.org/ (City of Austell official site)

Towns do not exist as legal entities in Georgia. Any incorporated municipality in Georgia smaller than a county is legally a city, no matter the physical size or population (note smaller cities like Avondale Estates with a population under 2500, for example). --Mhking (talk) 21:45, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lazy Susan[edit]

Firstly, the text was not visible because it was between the <ref> tags. Secondly, I removed the text, since it was copied directly from another source. Direct copying of that sort is frowned upon. You can certainly write an article based upon said text, but direct copying amounts to plagarism. --Mhking (talk) 04:52, 28 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say not -- the quote you mention does not fall within the context of the article on its own. --Mhking (talk) 00:54, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In other words, as opposed to copying someone else's words, craft your own. The reference piece should be simply that -- a reference piece, not a direct quote. That would fall as plagarism, which in itself is prohibited. Small quotes are one thing, but the majority of the text of an article is another thing entirely. As it stands now, the quote you mention does not add anything to the article over and above its present context. --Mhking (talk) 01:08, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Make Compatible[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Make Compatible, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). A tag has been placed on Southwest Cyberport, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising that only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this article is not blatant advertising, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add {{hangon}} on the top of Southwest Cyberport and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would help make it encyclopedic, as well as adding any citations from independent reliable sources to ensure that the article will be verifiable. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. ttonyb1 (talk) 02:32, 24 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism reverting[edit]

I suggest that you start reverting vandalism and not focus your edits on user and user talk space. If you start reverting vandalism, I highly recommend you using tools such as Twinkle. After a while (like 50-100 reverts) appply for rollback here. You probably will succeed. MathCool10 Sign here! 05:04, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. You should archive some of your conversations (create a page like /Archive 1 and start archiving).

Your talk page violates Wiki policy[edit]

The intro to your talk page is in violation of Wiki policy, specifically, the statement "donate to the wikimedia foundation you ungrateful sons". The bolded part is a violation of both "assume good faith" and more obviously, "no personal attacks".

Please remove it, or edit it to something more appropriate, thanks.32.166.255.198 (talk) 19:22, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Cooper Middle School (Georgia)[edit]

The article Cooper Middle School (Georgia) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

no assertion of notability

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.  JGHowes  talk 02:03, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

2010 WikiCup Signups Reconfirmation![edit]

To ensure that everyone who signed up is still committed to participating in the 2010 WikiCup, it is required that you remove your name from this list! By removing your name, you are not removing yourself from the WikiCup. This is simply a way for the judges to take note of who has not yet reconfirmed their participation. If you have not removed your name from that list by December 30th, 2009 (by 23:59 (UTC)) then your name will be removed from the WikiCup.

It's worth noting the rules have changed, likely after you signed up. The changes made thus far are:

  • Mainspace and/or portal edits will not be awarded points at all.
  • Did you know? articles (which were worth 5 points last year) will now be worth 10 points.
  • Good articles (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Valued pictures will be now awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
  • Featured lists (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Featured portals (which were worth 25 points last year) will now be worth 35 points.
  • Featured articles (which were worth 50 points last year) will now be worth 100 points.
  • Featured topics (which were worth 10 points per article last year) will now be worth 15 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • Good topics (which were worth 5 points per article last year) will now be worth 10 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • In the news will still be awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.

If you have any final concerns about the WikiCup's rules and regulations, please ask them now, before the Cup begins to avoid last minute problems. You may come to the WikiCup's talk page, or any of the judge's user talk pages. We're looking forwards to a great 2010 WikiCup! The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow![edit]

Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck! WikiCup 2010 January newsletter[edit]

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to Isle of Man Fetchcomms (submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.

Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! WikiCup 2010 February newsletter[edit]

Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! WikiCup 2010 March newsletter[edit]

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. WikiCup 2010 April newsletter[edit]

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) and Norway Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is Hungary Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) respectively.

Two of last year's final 8, Sweden Theleftorium (submissions) and Iceland Scorpion0422 (submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to White Shadows (submissions) for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help. The competition has continued to tick over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. Good luck to all! WikiCup 2010 June newsletter[edit]

We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were Ian Rose (submissions) (A), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (B, and the round's overall leader), Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) (C) New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) (D, joint), but, with the scores reset, everything is to play for in our last pooled round. The pools will be up before midnight tonight, and have been selected randomly by J Milburn. This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Wikipedia Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.

If you're interested in the scores for the last round of the Cup, please take a look at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Round 3 and Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Full/Round 3. Our thanks go to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for compiling these. As was predicted, Group C ended up the "Group of Death", with 670 points required for second place, and, therefore, automatic promotion. This round will probably be even tougher- again, the top two from each of the two groups will make it through, while the twelve remaining participants will compete for four wildcard places- good luck everyone! WikiCup 2010 July newsletter[edit]

We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Hungary Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants (Hungary Sasata (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by New South Wales Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.

Earlier this round, we said goodbye to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by Finland Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions). We appreciate his enthusiasm, and contestants are of course welcome to award each other prizes as they see fit, but rest assured that we will be sending out "official" awards at the end of the competition. Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) was awarded top points for in the news this round. Toronto Gary King (submissions) contributed a variety of did you know articles. Finland Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions) said "I'm surprised to have survived so far into the competition", but was extactic to see Finland in the semi-finals. Norway Arsenikk (submissions) did not score this round, but has scored highly in previous rounds. We also say goodbye to Ian Rose (submissions), who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Thank you to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for these.

Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. Discussion about how next year's scoring will work is ongoing, and thoughts are more than welcome at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. Also, TonyTheTiger is compiling some information and statistics on the finalists here- the final eight are encouraged to add themselves to the list.

Our final eight will play it out for two months, after which we will know 2010's WikiCup winner, and a variety of prizes will be awarded. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. WikiCup 2010 October newsletter[edit]

The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to New South Wales Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) and Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is New South Wales Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Connecticut Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! Spelling[edit]

Hi Marshall. It's common that on Talk Pages a consensus is reached regarding British or US spelling for any given article. As for "tyres," I think I would say British spelling should take precedence on India and Pakistan related articles. Please discuss on the talk page if you think US spelling should be used. His Way, Our Way (Sinatra Tribute)[edit]

You've been here 3 years. You should know that "it's good and worthy" won't hold water when asking for something to be kept. 1.) There are no sources to be found after several users checked, and 2.) the (Sinatra Tribute) part isn't needed since nothing else is called that. Tell me how you think we can get off keeping something because YOU like it. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 01:16, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Marshall Williams, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, file description page, file talk page, MediaWiki page, MediaWiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, user talk or special page from the main/article space.

If you can fix the redirect to point to a mainspace page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the article's talk page directly to give your reasons. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Sure. But any ideas how? yawaraey (talk) 02:27, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am terribly sorry but I cannot improve an article anywhere near that much. yawaraey (talk) 17:15, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Marshall Williams2, and thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia!

I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you worked on, Camp Woodland, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:

  1. edit the page
  2. remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. save the page

It helps to explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the Help Desk. Thanks again for contributing! Mark Arsten (talk) 22:32, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello, I see that you removed the proposed deletion template. Do you know of any coverage the article has received that could indicate its notability? Mark Arsten (talk) 23:09, 5 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Camp Woodland for deletion[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Camp Woodland is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Camp Woodland until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. Mark Arsten (talk) 00:16, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Marshall Williams2. You have new messages at Mark Arsten's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

I have changed the article Landmark Christian School back to a redirect to the city of the school Fairburn, Georgia, again. There are no references. Primary schools are not notable without references that demonstrate notability. The usual outcome is to redirect Christian schools to the city to which they are located unless they demonstrate individual notability. You have reverted twice and have refused to discuss on the talk page. If you want to take it to 3rd Opinion or some other venue, please do. The outcome of primary school articles is well documented on Wikipedia. But don't revert without discussion on the talk page and providing a valid rationale, as that is disruptive. AfD and PROD notifications[edit]

Hi Marshall Williams2,

Back in December, you got either an AfD or PROD notification, which was part of the template testing project's experiments. If you could go here and leave us some feedback about what you think about the new versions of the templates we tested (there are links to the templates), that would be very useful. (You can also email me at mpinchuk@wikimedia.org if you want.) Thanks! Maryana (WMF) (talk) 22:13, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Seether's Awards[edit]

Hey thanks for the compliments there. I've put the citations/references on the ones that hadn't got them but the others were already mentioned throughout the page so I didn't think I needed to put them on. eg MTV Africa Music Awards were mentioned in the 2008 section

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Notice

The file File:ChruchSide.JPG has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

orphaned image, absent user, no information provided to determine an encyclopedic use and easily replaceable

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Also:

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:02, 10 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
