GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is currently in the submissions stage. Submit your best October copy edit there before the end of the month. Submissions end, and discussion and voting begin, on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC).
  • Voting is in progress for the September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest. Everyone is welcome to vote, whether they have entered the contest or not.
  • NEW!! In the week from Sunday 21 October to Saturday 27 October, we are holding a Project Blitz, in which we will copy edit articles tagged with {{copyedit}} belonging to selected project(s). For the first blitz, we'll start with WikiProject Olympics and WikiProject Albums and add more Projects to the blitz as we clear them. The blitz works much like our bimonthly drives, but a bit simpler. Everyone is welcome to take part, and barnstars will be awarded.
  • November 2012 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in 2011 and to complete all requests placed before the end of October. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in 2011", and "Longest article". GOCE November 2012 copy edit drive update

Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

I wrote the more detailed comments on your talk page Hadger......I need to improve my functionality on this communication thing......Did I do that correctly? I found your talk page, and added the detailed comments. As my comments stated Hadger, I am being challenged about my lack of nuetrality, and am getting stymied countering it. The article in question is considered extremely nuetral by its' authors, so by definition, when I suggest opposite alternatives, I must be non-nuetral. They are blocking all attempts at balancing things out. I need someone to guide me, to keep me on the "nuetral" straight and narrow so to speak, so that when this is opposed, I can be confident that I am OK. Also Hadger, I would like some preliminary discussions to contextualize things, so that what I wish to change/rewrite is understood, as to where I am coming from. Can we do that via E-mail, and then revert here when we are agreed on the facts and major themes that are at play. The article is called "2010 Thai Political Protests".... I wouldn't mind ignoring all my previous attempts and comments that have been challenged with respect to their nuetrality, and start fresh, with someone looking over my shoulder. Anyways, about the whole neutrality thing, articles should be neutral because we don't want to sound like we support one side over the other. We want to make it so that when people read Wikipedia, they read facts, not our opinions. However, it is appropriate to write about other people's opinions. For example, it wouldn't be appropriate to say that a video game is the worst video game ever created; however, it would be okay to say that, for example, Metacritic said that a game was the worst video game ever created. Even tiny comments, such as "the video game received critical acclaim," is seen as non-neutral, because some people might not see the reviews of the video game as "critical acclaim." Also, about me being twelve years old, I think that I still have a thorough understanding of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines despite my age. I have been editing Wikipedia for three years, and I've learned a lot about Wikipedia during that time. I can still help you with Wikipedia even though I am twelve years old. Hello Hadger - You may be interested in what i wrote John Lewis. Your continued interest is appreciated Hadger, and I welcome any asistance you can provide...Sincerely FERWERT "Hello John – Thank you very much for offering your mentoring assistance. Being a newby to Wikipedia processes, I hope your offer remains in place, although as Hadger mentioned, that may be in question. Be that as it may, let me give you some background as to where I am coming from. As mentioned to Hadger, before I realized he was a very young man, and admirable for his engagement, this whole question of Nuetrality is an interesting question when it comes to depicting political events that clearly have a side “A” and a side “B”. How to reconcile those two sides into a narrative reflecting the realities on both sides. I recall from my University debating activities, one needed to be able to debate one side of the issue, then turn on a dime, and argue the other side equally vociferously. In this instance, I could easily do the same thing, as the two sides of this Thai Political divide are easily defined. The current narrative describing the events of the 2010 Thai Political Protests on Wikipedia is clearly representative of side “A”. I know the perspective of side “B” (the protesters) and this is very clear to me. I could also represent side “A” very vehemently. It is not rocket-science. However, if the author considers the neutrality of this article beyond reproach, by definition, that makes alternatives invalid, and legitimizes deleting them altogether. He refers to his 39 photo’s as evidence of such neutrality, when they are also looked at through a different lens by Side “B”. Two perspectives from a different POV demonstrate this - #1-Calling them foto’s of a military crackdown alone, brings their neutrality into question. Side “A’ underlying theme of anarchic protesters are bolstered by the images, and the ½ dozen or so foto’s involving military in benign poses with barely a gun in sight support the Side “A” narrative. Having seen the video’s playing at side “B” rallies with military guns ablaze, protesters faltering in their run due to a bullet in their chest, protesters lying on the ground with a bullet hole dead-center in their forehead, soldiers putting the boots to little old ladies in tents . This doesn’t even mention the nurse in the temple and a 75 year-old protester shot through the foot by an expanding bullet, another one in the eye which causes constant tears. These are the alternative perspectives not incorporated within the narrative currently in Wikipedia, never mind the political context, which is the most important. Line #1 of the current narrative is grossly misrepresentative of the political context, which is then projected throughout the article. There are two perspectives of both these clashes as well as the politics behind them. My attempt to bring them into the equation have been summarily deleted. Even my request to at least discuss the alternatives to the current narrative have been dismissed. In large part using process related reasons. And that brings me to my point of needing a mentor to guide me through the process, in a way that does not use process to eliminate neutrality. With some assistance bringing balance to this single article, I will presumably gain the process capability of extending it to other representations of this political divide in Thailand. I understand you also read my similar representations to Hadger before I realized how young he was, and that is good. I hope others read what I have written you, and cause there to be some pause about what is neutral in this regard. I understand however, another reality that will be at play. Side “B” as discussed above, is an electoral majority in Thailand and accordingly the underpinning of elected Governments. It is a gross minority among Native English speakers. There is always the tendency to dismiss English language perspectives outlining the above by that community, to the extent that its’ minority can appear to be otherwise, and those who provide this balance be seen as aberrations. Within the balance of majority vs. minority, that does not apply. Anyway John, let me know regarding this mentoring thing, so that I can proceed “smart” instead “ of “dumb” within a process that I am unfamiliar with at this point. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ferwert (talk • contribs) 03:20, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

The total backlog at the end of the month was 2690 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. It seems that I can't leave Wikipedia for 1 day for the holidays without having massive editing that is nothing more but unsourced character statuses.
