Hello! My name is Belugaboy, and by now, you and I both have heard of the Motto Shop, and if not, there's a Motto Shop! It's an exclusive place where users can get their own motto to live by on the wiki. It's great, but we're really running slow, in fact, we haven't seen a customer in months. So we thought YOU, the contributors to Motto of the Day, could spread the word to your WikiFriends, heck, order yourself one, whether you have or haven't before. Thank you and warm regards to all of you!

GOCE drive newsletter

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their November 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles (and specifically will be targeting the oldest three months), as we want to copy edit as many of these as possible. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters.

You may have noticed over the past few days that the MOTD that you link to on your user page has simply displayed a red link. This is due to the fact that not enough people are reviewing pending MOTDs here. Please help us keep the MOTD template alive and simply go and review a few of the MOTDs in the list. GOCE March drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive
GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The GOCEreviewed tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (Talk), Stfg (Talk), and Dank (talk)

GOCE May mid-drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.

Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. On to the second million! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg

The total backlog currently sits at around 2600 articles, down from 8323 when we started out just over two years ago.

Coodinator election: The six-month term for our third tranche of Guild coordinators will be expiring at the end of June. Understanding edit warring

I saw your comments on user talk:Status and I'm curious: You say that since "he's removing unsourced information, which doesn't count as edit warring" . I may have missed that section on Wikipedia:Edit warring page. Could you point it out to me?

There is an exception for adding unsourced defamatory information, specifically "Removal of libelous, biased, unsourced, or poorly sourced contentious material that violates the policy on biographies of living persons (BLP)." Adding that genre of a song hardly counts as violating BLP. Toddst1 (talk) 05:50, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Sorry. I was wrong about that. Either way, though, Status didn't edit war. He only reverted twice, and he didn't even revert the same person. He should be unblocked. Hadger 05:54, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
Keep reading. You don't have to revert three times to be edit warring, nor is it limited to 24 hours.
Under almost any other circumstance, a second revert would not be grounds for blocking. In this particular circumstance, performing his second identical revert - immediately upon early release of his previous block for edit warring under very similar circumstances is absolutely grounds for blocking. Another question

Hadger, how do I add shadow, color and other effects to my signature?Mr.Magikpants (talk) 22:06, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure if you're asking how to edit your signature, the markup that I used to make my signature have special effects, or both. I'm pretty sure that you're asking about the markup, but I'll tell you how to edit your signature and how to use the markup to add special effects to your signature just in case I'm wrong. :)
To edit your signature, click on "My Preferences" next to your username in the top right corner of the screen. Scroll down until you get to the section called "Signature". Make sure that "Treat the above as wiki markup" is checked off. Then, type in your signature.
Now I'll tell you about the markup that I used. I'm not an HTML expert (I probably looked at some markup and made some changes to it make it my signature), but here is the code that I used: <span style="text-shadow:grey 0.3em 0.3em 0.1em; class=texhtml"><span style="color:blue">Ha</span><span style="color:purple">dg</span><span style="color:green">er</span></span>. You can use that code and make some changes to it and use that as your signature.
Please see WP:CUSTOMSIG and Wikipedia:Signatures#Links for information on what your signature should and shouldn't include. :) Hadger 00:25, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Me asking 2 questions!

What does the CURRENTDOW magic word do? Can I preform mathematical operations with the data supplied by two magic words? Mr.Magik-Pants (talk) 22:50, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

CURRENTDOW displays the day of the week. 1 means "Monday", 2 means "Tuesday", etc.
Also, you can perform mathematical operations by using two magic words by using the magic word. For example, if you wanted to add together the current year and the current day, you would do this: . Use "+" for addition, "-" for subtraction, "*" for multiplication, and "/" for division. For more information on magic words, see WP:MAGIC, and for more information on performing mathematical operations with magic words, see Help:Calculation. :) Hadger 23:45, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

RfA stuff

Hi Hadger. I understand your good intentions, but I think the user will have already got the message, there's no need to pile on and some of your advice is possibly not the best - it's certain that such an RfA will not succeed for a couple of years. It's also extremely rare for anyone with less than 3,000 edits to be promoted, and the general pass mark is more around 10,000 - 12,000. I'm sure you will find this particularly interesting. Hi Hadger. I'm leaving you this message because you have previously been involved as an adopter with Wikipedia's Adopt-a-user program. A clean-up of this program is currently underway, and as part of the process I am trying to find out who is and isn't still interested in remaining an adopter.

If you would prefer not to be part of the adoption program anymore, you need do nothing; when the overhaul of the project is completed your name will be removed from the list of active adopters. However, if you have current adoptees, an active adoption school or an interest in adopting in the near future, then please let us know by signing here.

If you want to remain in the project and can currently take on more adoptees, there is a serious backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user; it would be enormously helpful if you could take on one or two of the users there. Please do keep an eye on the project for upcoming changes, we could use your opinions and your help! Yunshui  09:03, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Hadger. Thanks for agreeing to stay on at Adopt-a-user. I've recently updated the list of adopters and I have included you, per your original comments on that page and your comments at User:Yunshui/Overhaul/Adopters staying on. You can see your new profile at the list of adopters. Why not update your profile with an image and maybe have another look at your description? You can also include a list of any adoptees you currently have. If you are also willing to mentor problematic users, possibly as part of a conditional unblock, please include "mentorship=yes" in your profile. Thanks again for all your help. WikiProject Good articles (Participant Clean-Up)

Hello, you are receiving this message because you are currently a participant of WikiProject Good articles. Since the creation of the WikiProject, over 200 user's have joined to help review good article nominations and contribute to other sections of the WikiProject. Over the years, several of these users have stopped reviewing articles and/or have become inactive with the project but are still listed as participates. In order to improve communications with other participants and get newsletters sent out faster (newsletters will begin to be sent out monthly starting in October) all participants that are no longer active with the WikiProject will be removed from the participants list.

If you are still interested in being a participant for this WikiProject, please sign your user name here and please help review some articles so we can reduce the size of the backlog. If you are no longer interested, you do not need to sign your name anywhere and your name will be removed from the participants list after the deadline. Remember that even if you are not interested at this time, you can always re-add your name to the list whenever you want. The deadline to sign your name on the page above will be November 1, 2012. Thank-you. 13:26, 22 September 2012 (UTC)
