DRofus -> dRofus

Hi,

Just visited https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRofus and saw that the product name was wrong. It's actually dRofus (starting with lower case 'd' then capital 'R'). I tried to update but was dismissed as unproductive. I would like to contribute to this page but wanted to start with correcting the product spelling - also in the page name.

Difficult dabs

Hi and sorry if you're already aware of that:The {{dn}} tag that sometimes follows dab links means that someone has already made an effort to disambiguate the link and hasn't succeeded – so that's probably a tough one. And unless the text around the link has been reworded or the dab page has been expanded, the situation isn't going to change. Hi Uanfala, I linked to that based on this book. According to that book Taraka is "Brihaspati's wife". In Taraka (goddess), Taraka is also the second consort of Hindu God Brihaspati, God of planet Jupiter. So, I assumed that this is correct link. Fuortu (talk) 16:21, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

Oh, I see what's tripped you up. Tarakamaya is not a character but the name of a conflict (p. 20 of your book). But what you've read was the text on p. 321 when it says that Soma was involved in causing the Tarakamaya war (apparently by abducting Taraka (goddess). And you've probably made the connection with the text in the article under question, where Soma and Taraka are mentioned in the same paragraph. But this is an enumeration of events associated with a given place (the first event was a sacrifice performed by Soma, the other one a war in which Taraka was killed). So 1) there's no connection with Soma; 2) the events associated with the two Tarakas are different. Uanfala (talk) 17:34, 23 August 2016 (UTC)
Oh, I didn't think that it was the name of a conflict. So you're saying that the character named Taraka is not Taraka (goddess)? The book said atleast two times that Taraka is wife of Brihaspati. The book says all kinds of things about all kinds of characters, and it's meant to – it's an index to the vast body of Puranic mythology. The mention of Taraka in Saraswata Kingdom doesn't give us enough context to be completely sure, but it's very likely this is the asura, and very unlikely it's the goddess. Anyway, Hindu mythology is an area where I feel it's usually tricky to disambiguate. Uanfala (talk) 08:11, 24 August 2016 (UTC)

  • Now Laurel Lodged, the text in question was inserted by one anonymous user [1] and then was removed by another anonymous user [2].   • Yeah, I should've examined that edit carefully before reverting it. There are many stories of "Wicklow ghosts" on the internet but probably that edit wasn't vandalism. That editor didn't remove the whole thing correctly, I mean, they left some part and removed some text from unrelated paragraph so, it could be vandalism. I'm not sure. Glossary vs dictionary?

Hi Fuortu, thanks for reviewing my draft glossary. I see I have fallen foul of the WP:NOT policy & have put together a dictionary instead :(

I have followed the WP:MOS definition that a glossary needs to be "An alphabetically arranged list of a subject's terms, with definitions. Each term is followed by one or more explanatory (encyclopedia-style) definitions". Can you advise what needs to be done to create such a glossary of Prestressed Concrete terms? I have gone through Wiki's articles on both Glossaries and Dictionaries, and but am still in the dark on this distinction when it comes to producing a list of terms for a given subject.

The intention of the proposed glossary is to be a companion article to the existing Prestressed concrete and draft Draft:Prestressed_concrete_(Theory) and Draft:Prestressed_concrete_(Stressing systems) articles I am working through. Those two draft articles are likely to contain a fair degree of technical material, so a list of terms a reader could be referred to could be quite helpful.

At first I thought possibly all terms in a glossary had to be notable and (even better) have their own Wiki articles, but I have seen many existing glossaries which don't conform to this requirement, (see Glossary of blackjack terms and Glossary of British bricklaying. Both those glossaries are just a list of terms, most even without any sources. I was hoping that my submitted article was at least at the quality of these?

The definition you quoted from is not an official policy. Community consensus is needed for that to become a policy. Anyway, glossaries are acceptable on Wikipedia if the list of words is about a notable topic. I'm not sure why glossaries are allowed if Wikipedia is not a dictionary. Hi Michifornia, that discussion about the logo is closed and that logo will be moved to commons. You don't have to worry about the logo. Your draft is currently in the queue, it'll be reviewed soon. There a big backlog, so it may take some time. Draft's review process is independent from the logo discussion. That discussion has nothing to do with the draft. Hi, current sources do not show that he is notable. You need more independent reliable sources which cover him in detail. We write what other people say about him not what he says about himself, which means we need 3rd party sources. Hi @DziegielewskiBA:, you have to add more sources which discuss the person in significant detail. Name-drops don't help. I generally look for news, magazines, books to see if the person is notable. You can't cite Wikipedia because it's like saying "because I said so". However, you can cite sources which are in those articles. Hi, and thanks for your work on the Na article! It's great having another person working on chemical element articles, particularly such an important one. I see you've done excellent work with the referencing, as well!

BTW I think we could have a little more talk on Na as a reducing agent – I see we already mention the Birch reduction, but we should probably also mention that Na in ammonia solution is commonly used to reduce alkynes to trans-alkenes, and the more basic example of reacting with alcohols to give alkoxides. Since the chemistry of Na metal and its compounds is rather anonymous (it mostly gets used as a singly-charged innocuous counter-ion, and can be more easily covered with the other alkali metals) I think things like this should be fair game for the article. Challenge Stakes disambiguation

Hi Fuortu, thank you for moving Challenge Stakes after the move I requested. It doesn't look quite right to me though - the dab page sits at Challenge Stakes (disambiguation), but - "the title of a disambiguation page is the ambiguous term itself, provided there is no primary topic for that term." per WP:DABNAME. There is no primary topic here, and I can see from the history that you had different ideas at different times before the final move. You can nominate it for deletion if you want but it can't be speedy deleted. See WP:AFD for instructions on how to nominate but it will not be easy because you have to do it manually. Generally, Twinkle (semi-automatic tool) is used to nominate articles for deletion but you need autoconfirmed account to use it. However, if multiple reliable sources have talked about that competition, even if that competition didn't take place, I don't see why it should be deleted. Fuortu (talk) 16:35, 20 October 2016 (UTC)

Phone number

Hi,
Thanks for your quick reaction on my phone number question.
There must have been some overlap of editing (I was doing a small edit on my "sources" paragraph), and after finishing I noticed that you had apparently deleted my "sources" paragraph together with the phone number. Was that just an accident, or was there something wrong with my contribution?

Talk redlinks post-round robin

Hi Fuortu, just an FYI, I created Talk:Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien to redirect to Talk:Runner2 after your round-robin move. Per WP:PMVR#rr step 4, please remember to re-create talk page redlinks post-move, as there are sometimes a lot of incoming links to newly-redlinked talk pages (and subpages). The reason this happens is that Page A may have a talk page, but redirect B does not. After the swap, "Talk:A" no longer exists.

In this example, see Special:WhatLinksHere/Talk:Runner2:_Future_Legend_of_Rhythm_Alien. The way I do it is, I check my own contributions for redlinked talk pages and subpages and re-create them. Hope that make sense, cheers :) — Andy W. (talk) 17:04, 1 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review needs your help

Hi Fuortu,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

Steve "Clem" Grogan

Would you mind undoing your RM close at Talk:Steve "Clem" Grogan? I think that's a pretty strange result, as it is contrary to the previous RM about that page and didn't really have sufficient participation. In my opinion, it is contrary to WP:NICKNAME and contrary to what is ordinarily done on Wikipedia, and the quote marks are really not part of that person's name. There are various similar precedents, and I don't recall ever seeing one end up this way. I guess I wasn't paying attention over the last week. I can't blame you much for closing it the way you did, since there was no opposition expressed, but I find the provided rationale rather strange and I think this would not have happened if more discussion were allowed to occur (or if it was closed by a typical experienced admin, which is why non-admins are requested to exercise caution about closing RMs). —BarrelProof (talk) 03:13, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi BarrelProof. According to WP:NICKNAME, using quotation marks in title should be 'avoided', that means it is not entirely forbidden. RM at Talk:Ed "Too Tall" Jones, in which you participated, was closed in favor of having quotation marks and nickname in the title by an admin. If the name with quotation marks and nickname is common name, it is OK to use that as the title of the article. For example, see the RM discussion at Talk:Evelyn "Champagne" King. It is clear that "Steve "Clem" Grogan" is the common name because almost all Google search results use that name. On the other hand, I don't see a single source which uses the previous title "Clem Grogan", so I don't think reverting is a good idea. Fuortu (talk) 11:43, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

Yes, Talk:Ed "Too Tall" Jones is an interesting one – but he's not a criminal. Phosphorus has always fascinated me since my childhood. Maybe it's because it glows in the dark. That's why I chose phosphorus. It will take considerable amount of time to get this article to good article status. If you improve the article by adding stuff, I would greatly appreciate it. I'll add my name to the list of active participants myself, thanks. Sodium article has more sources than phosphorus even though sodium is much smaller compared to phosphorus. Phosphorus has lots of paragraphs which are completely unsourced, so it needs lots of sources to become a good article. I'm currently looking at nitrogen (link is to my sandbox) as a study for phosphorus (one row further down in the periodic table and so different due to the existence of radial nodes in the 3p orbitals). It's not anywhere near complete yet in the sandbox but I have planned it out offline so it should be finished soon.
