It seems like I missed the ANI report and I just learned about it as weekend is over for me. Same might be for others. Reopening the ANI report would be fine.Qualitist (talk) 21:39, 2 December 2018 (UTC)

I tried to ask for reopening of the report but Fish and karate [1] rightfully archived new discussion but what was not mentioned there can be mentioned here.

From yesterday alone, DBX frequently claimed that people who supported an RM and those who endorse MR request are engaging in COI/paid editing by referring them as "PR machinery", "Friends and Fan club" of the subject.[2][3] To claim everyone who is disagreeing with you to be engaging in COI/paid editing is a clear harassment and battleground mentality.
Yesterday, when one editor calmly tried to discuss the content dispute initiated by DBX,[4] he begin to harass that editor by asking that how that editor was recruited.[5] DBX didn't even reviewed prior history of the contributor with the article before assuming bad faith. When the editor clarified to DBX that they edited the article before,[6] DBX still falsified a URL to justify his claims of recruitment.[7][8]

This is really becoming tiresome because DbigXray always resorts to ABF or NPA in place of focusing on content. Since you had warned against such behavior after enough people had shared similar views I think the recent misconduct shouldnt be ignored. Qualitist (talk) 12:27, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

An arbitration case regarding Fred Bauder has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:

  1. Fred Bauder is admonished for engaging in an edit war on his candidate's questions page. Future edit-warring or disruptive behavior may result in further sanctions.
  2. For multiple self-unblocks, wheel-warring, and abuse of rollback, Fred Bauder is desysopped. He may regain the administrative tools at any time via a successful request for adminship.
  3. Boing! said Zebedee is cautioned for blocking Fred Bauder while actively involved in an edit war with him at the time. He is further cautioned to avoid edit-warring, even in cases where the other editor is editing disruptively.
  4. Editors should seek assistance from the Electoral Commission for issues that arise on pages related to the Arbitration Committee Elections that cannot be easily resolved (excluding, for example, obvious vandalism). The Arbitration Committee reaffirms that the Electoral Commission has been tasked with the independent oversight of the Arbitration Committee Elections. Matters which are of a private matter should be referred to the Arbitration Committee or functionaries team as normal.

For the Arbitration Committee, --Cameron11598 (Talk) 08:12, 6 December 2018 (UTC)

Cyberbot II page blanking

In Special:Diff/872072320/872099047. Sam Sailor 08:40, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

Also here. Since you've got EFM privileges, do you think you could put in a quick edit filter to block any bot edits that result in a zero-byte page? At least as a temporary measure until someone is able to track down the problem in the code? 28bytes (talk) 04:50, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

Cyberbot I

Hello, I just wanted to let you know that Cyberbot I has blanked WP:CHUS five times in the past two weeks (once on 28 November [9], twice on 1 December [10][11] and twice today [12][13]). Linguist111my talk page 05:00, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

Cyberbot I and RFPP

I've noticed that Cyberbot I keeps incorrectly calling me out on RFPP for not protecting the pages of request I've marked as 'done'. Some I understand (of course), such as requests with more than one article listed or that weren't formatted properly by the OP... but I don't think this is the case recently. It only seems to be doing it to me, but then again... I'm usually quite active there and I typically take care of the entire backlog. I just wanted to give you an FYI; it's making me scratch my head and I'm not sure what's going on... :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:32, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

One possibility is that if you leave your sig or a comment on a newline after the declined or done templates, the bot gets confused and thinks the conversation is ongoing. I'm guilty of this sometimes, but Dlohcierekim is funnier. ~ Amory (utc) 01:27, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

I've disabled the task as it is just making useless edits every 5 minutes. Please look into it. –xenotalk 14:54, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

It seems to be running amok at Template:Cratstats as well, vacillating between two different figures every couple minutes. –xenotalk 16:46, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple was also blanked by bot again Hhkohh (talk) 03:03, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

Cyberbot I's clerking task at WP:CHUS disabled

Hey Cyber. I know you're probably busy, but I wanted to just let you know that in light of five WP:CHUS blankings within a two week period and another totally random bot blanking just a few hours ago, I've disabled the bot's clerking task at WP:CHUS. Feel free to turn it back on at your discretion. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 03:23, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot

I find it user hostile to not accept talk page messages for discussions, and I won't be bothered to set up phabricator accounts. Instead I'm posting my comment here:

The bot says this: "As of February 2018, "External links modified" talk page sections are no longer generated or monitored by InternetArchiveBot."

I would suggest this is amended to make it clear that the bot still keeps working - it just doesn't spam talk page messages about it anymore (a decision I am in favor of).

Please consider changing this message to something like:

As of February 2018, "External links modified" talk page sections are no longer generated or monitored by InternetArchiveBot. However, InternetArchiveBot still keeps working exactly as before, just not posting about it.

Please also consider the negative impact of shielding yourself from user messages by requiring external tools. I firmly believe that if you set up a bot, you should also be open to simple talk messages about that bot. Please do not post messages such as "don't leave messages on this talk page, they will likely not be read." CapnZapp (talk) 09:59, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

"[if you] do not have the means to do the above, you may leave me a message at User talk:Cyberpower678." <-- This seems reasonable to me. –xenotalk 13:28, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
CapnZapp, You are not obligated to use Phabricator, and no where does it say you have to. As you have clearly found your way to my talk page, the page works as intended. Phabricator is used to report bugs and it's standard practice to track bugs of large scale projects there. So no, I am not shielding myself, I am deferring users to a place where I can sort bug reports out and not forget what still needs to be fixed. Talk pages cannot do that, and I will promptly forget what's been reported there as new ones would come in. Been there, and done that. With that being said I am still open to talk page reports, and therefore will consider an alternate wording suggestion. How about "As of February 2018, InternetArchiveBot continues to operate on articles but no longer leaves talk page messages." —CYBERPOWER (Merry Christmas) 13:32, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

Archive site not right

Hi Cyberpower678, Regarding talk_page of Midgetgolf:

First the site Iedereen welkom op onze minigolfclub pagina. exists, but is about one club.
Second the federation has a site hereKlaas `Z4␟` V 14:24, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
KlaasZ4usV, I'm not sure what you are trying to say here. Can you please clarify? —CYBERPOWER (Merry Christmas) 13:23, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
Your bot created a false positive and therefore a wrong "solution". Klaas `Z4␟` V 13:30, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
KlaasZ4usV, actually that site triggered an anti-trojan firewall. So the bot saw it as dead. I'm not sure you want people visiting that site. —CYBERPOWER (Merry Christmas) 13:55, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
The site in the article is the only one for the Belgian union. Trojan or not I do not care, it's informative as opposed to the archived site which is not at all, because practically void. Klaas `Z4␟` V 14:24, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
KlaasZ4usV, you may not care about having trojans on your computer, but I do. I will not be marking a site as valid if it tries to load a trojan virus onto my computer. —CYBERPOWER (Merry Christmas) 14:28, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
Do not know what system/browser you use, but I never got a trojan nor virus on my MacBook/Firefox. Just like your tool detected false positives your OS/AV-app might do the same? Klaas `Z4␟` V 14:39, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
KlaasZ4usV, My anti-virus scanner (Norton) AND my personal network firewall on my router got triggered on my personal network when I attempted to load the page. IABot lives on the WMF cloud server. I imagine they have a firewall too that may have gotten triggered. I will take a closer look. —CYBERPOWER (Merry Christmas) 14:45, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
KlaasZ4usV, as an update, the bot sees the URL as alive now. May have just been a temporary issue. Sorry for the hassle. BTW, you can submit false positives into https://tools.wmflabs.org/iabot/index.php?page=reportfalsepositive&wiki=nlwiki where in most cases, it will fix the problem automatically. —CYBERPOWER (Merry Christmas) 14:47, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

Merry Merry

Happy Christmas!
Hello Cyberpower678,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 18:38, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

Cyberbot I @ meta

Good day. I'd like to request that Cyberbot I amends the cleaning sandbox script for Meta not to include translate tags [14]. If possible, it should only leave {{Meta:Sandbox/Please do not edit this line}}. There's a thread at the Meta VP on how to better localise the Sanbox without having to create one sandbox page per language. Thank you :) —MarcoAurelio (talk) 12:03, 17 December 2018 (UTC)

MarcoAurelio, I'll have to look at it when I get a chance. Just make sure to keep hounding me so I won't forget. :-) —CYBERPOWER (Merry Christmas) 03:48, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks - Will do. In the meanwhile I'll disable the task as we're trying to do some maintenance there and the stubborn translation templates and extension is giving us a hard time to do it. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:47, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

IABot during US shutdown

Hi Cyberpower, please see de:Wikipedia:Kurier#Government_Shutdown_–_wieso_betrifft_das_Wikipedia? InternetArchiveBot should indeed be paused on German Wikipedia in case of a governmental shutdown. I also informed Cirdan at deWP. Merry Christmas! --Martina Nolte talk 06:32, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

Martina Nolte, Shouldn't really be that big of an issue. As long as the government isn't shut down for more than 9 days, it should be fine. With that being said, if it is shut down for that long, then stopping the bot on dewiki will not prevent the bot from seeing the URLs as dead as the URL DB is shared on all wikis. —CYBERPOWER (Merry Christmas) 19:37, 23 December 2018 (UTC)
Oh okay. They want to prevent that IABot replaces links that will be live again soon. Can you exempt *.gov URLs for the duration of the shutdown? --Martina Nolte talk 05:06, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

A very minor thing about Cyberbot I

Got a bit confused here with Frano Kršinić (sculptor) - there is no such link in the article, it's possibly due to the way text outside wikilinks is parsed, or something of the sort.

I really like the tool, one could almost say it gives meaning to the books (at least to us editors)! GregorB (talk) 01:49, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

DBigXray

Unfortunately, even after your block warning, this user is still gaming the system and bludgeoning his way through the pedia. I nominated a contentious article he created for deletion at AFD. Without even allowing any community input he speedily closed the AFD citing a vague and misleading edit summary.[15] I have looked at the policy on applicability of speedy keep and none of the 6 acceptable reasons for speedy keep closures apply to my AFD nomination. He is gaming and bludgeoning again. My firm gut tells me he won't ever reform and only a block can prevent his disruption. FreeKashmiri (talk) 12:30, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

In my closing summary at AfD and at the article page, I clearly mentioned Wikipedia:Speedy_keep#Applicability. You are well aware that this article is currently on the main page and yet you are intent on these disruptive edits. This is clearly not a new user and a sock of someone. I would suggest Cyberpower to block this account Special:Contributions/FreeKashmiri for disruption and WP:NOTHERE, the sooner the better. --DBigXray 12:56, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Well if that is the real case, you should ensure that your edit summaries are clear and not vague. I am still concerned that your language and behaviour continues to be aggressive. FreeKashmiri (talk) 13:08, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
FreeKashmiri, There is nothing wrong with DBigXray's actions. Your filing for AfD was clearly erroneous, if not disruptive, and sudden change of behavioral character. I'm inclined to agree you are a sock of someone, but as I have no hard evidence, I will tell you to go do something productive instead. —CYBERPOWER (Chat) 14:24, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot links

Hi. There's something that i have always found irksome about the InternetArchiveBot: instead of keeping the deadlink and adding script saying that the deadlink was archived, with a new link, why not just replace the deadlink, with no extra script added? It seems redundant to keep the deadlink (what is the reader going to pick up from it that's not in the archived link?); and the addition of automated script sometimes messes up formats used, as not all references are formatted the same way. Please take this into consideration as a suggestion. Dahn (talk) 07:07, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

IABot job request

Hi Cyberpower678,

I'm currently working on various WP:BACKLOG projects and Category:Articles with dead external links is an interesting one. I use IABot to analyze the page and rescue any dead links and as there are over 200,000 pages in the aforementioned category I was wondering if it's possible for you to run it on all the pages in the category en bloc?

Many thanks,

Administrators' newsletter – January 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).

Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Greetings. From my following of WP:BADAFD, I've noticed that when there is a space between the "=" and the page name in the "page" field of the AfD template, that Cyberbot reports the template as being redlinked when this is not the case. Examples: this version of the AfD report reporting three pages, which were cleared after I edited out the space 1, 2, 3. I've seen it happen previously in cases where the AfD tag also didn't appear to be properly subst:'ed as seems to be the case with these three. It's pretty minor and debatable as to whether it's worthy of a great deal of attention, but here it is and feel free to do what you will with it. Thanks for your hard work. --Finngall talk 20:07, 10 January 2019 (UTC)

Complete false positive performed by User:Cyberbot I

Hey Cyberpower678, just wanted to give you a heads-up about this edit performed by Cyberbot I on Wikipedia:Requests for page protection. In the edit, Cyberbot I made the claim that the protection level of Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Ruzwana Bashir has been changed and/or unprotected since I made my request a few hours ago for the page to be unprotected. Well, as of this moment, the last time the pages's protection level was changed was when the page was protected back in February 2006.

So yeah, I'm letting you know of this error since this false positive performed by Cyberbot I was so inaccurate that it may need resolution. Steel1943 (talk) 05:44, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

Cyberbot decided that WP:Articles for deletion/John Dingfelder had not been transcluded to step 3. It was done on the dated I nominated the article [16]. The bot then relisted the AfD on Jan 15 [17]. Niteshift36 (talk) 16:07, 15 January 2019 (UTC)

Need for ongoing ban? Jzsj

I am asking whether you would see your way to lifting my ban on editing schools articles. I believe the ban was imposed because, with insufficient knowledge of the Wiki rule, I applied the "3-edit rule" where an RfD was in process. I assure you that I've always tried to correspond to the rules as I come to know them, and that the blitz of new awareness of the rules, that came after 30 months of editing without any such knowledge, has made me more sophisticated in dealing with other editors. I have no interest in letting this happen again. Jzsj (talk) 20:18, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

Jzsj, Sorry for the late response. I can't unilaterally remove the ban as it was placed by the community and enacted by me. You will need to appeal at AN to get it lifted. Sorry.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 23:32, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the response. I will try. Jzsj (talk) 00:43, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

Cyberbot I overhaul

Hi, I'd like to request a few changes to Cyberbot I's RFPP clerking algorithms.
Please see Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_page_protection#Technical_roadmap. As soon as MusikAnimal's script has been updated, the bot can be updated as well. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 07:10, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
This may take some time to implement.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 16:34, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

InternetArchiveBot

Hi, I have a question about the InternetArchiveBot. When it changes something, it leaves a message on the talkpage. But why is there a link to the article in this message? I guess it is pretty obvious that when it is leaving a message on say the talkpage of Foobar it has edited the article Foobar, right? Muijz (talk) 20:18, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

RfX report

I have disabled the task as it's edit warring with itself and has made 300 edits to one page, and it's editing about every 5-10 minutes, if not 3x in that period. -- Amanda (aka DQ) 21:44, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

In regards to your edits in List of Sword Art Online Alicization episode

Thanks for leaving your edits on the page. Seems like you are pretty knowledge of this anime. I just wanted to ask you something. By any chance, Have the next episode been leaked to you?
Sincerely,
Masum Reza(talk) 23:42, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

Masumrezarock100, not exactly leaked, but I'm well versed into the story and the anime follows a predictable pattern. So I saw no harm in putting a plot summary in comments. Albeit the "Release Recollection" command will likely be the cliff hanger for the following episode. The episode will mostly focus on Kirito and Alice and getting Alice to break the seal in her right eye, which she does.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 17:43, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
I see. You read the light novels. Isn't your edit a spoiler? I mean you edited the anime episodes page not light novels page.
Sincerely,
Masum Reza(talk) 18:12, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
Masumrezarock100, Well this is an encyclopedia. Spoiling the anime is the least of my concerns. Besides the summary is hidden right now, so most readers won't even see it.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 18:14, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

Cyberbot is malfunctioning

Hi, Cyberpower. I just blocked Cyberbot I indefinitely in Commons as malfunctioning bot. Please look at bot contributions in Commons and fix it. After that you can request unblock. Taivo (talk) 11:55, 28 January 2019 (UTC)

Taivo, It's caused by an issue with MW. I'm waiting for them to fix it.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 17:32, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
Hello. The bot keeps adding translate tags at m:Meta:Sandbox [20]. The bot also shouldn't be running as per this. Could you please take a look when you can? Thank you. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 18:52, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi Cyberpower678, Reinischmax is recently active, but it looks like you are "approving" making changes to their own personal user scripts at their talk page - what's going on that they can't approve their own change? — xaosflux Talk 22:50, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

Xaosflux, we are working together at Internet Archive. We are in direct communication on Slack. But if you want I can have him respond instead. Additionally, I put the script there so he can freely edit the script.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 22:54, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, that explains things, was wondering if you had an unmarked sock or something. — xaosflux Talk 23:15, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
Xaosflux, nope. Just co-workers.  :-) Everything is, or at least should be, above board and I have been taking care to make sure we are all following all policies.—CYBERPOWER (Chat) 23:18, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

"df=dmy-all / df=mdy-all"

Hi Cyberpower678, Just wondering is "df=dmy-all" / "df=mdy-all" meant to do something ? (if not should it be removed from "Fix dead links"?),
I only ask as for a good a year to 2 years now the User:Ohconfucius/script/MOSNUM_dates script has been adjusted to remove the "df=dmy-all/df=mdy-all"[21][22],
I originally assumed it was old/deprecated coding and assumed consensus was made somewhere to remove them so thought nothing of it .... but having just used "Fix dead links" I've realised it's your script/tool that's been adding them,
Given that I use MOSNUM_dates every day by now I must've removed "df=" on well over 500-1000 articles (and that doesn't include everyone else who uses the script),
Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 12:48, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

The parameter just allows the citation to set its style of date formatting. If you're removing them, you should change the dates in the date fields to respect the df parameter in the citation if filled. I would guess Ohc's script does that. --Izno (talk) 13:58, 30 January 2019 (UTC)
Ahhh I'm with ya!, Okie dokie many thanks for explaining this, Cheers, –Davey2010Talk 15:40, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

Guideline and policy news

  • A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
  • Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

Technical news

  • A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

Miscellaneous

  • Voting in the 2019 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2019, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2019, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
  • A new IRC bot is available that allows you to subscribe to notifications when specific filters are tripped. This requires that your IRC handle be identified.

Misbehavior of bot in November

InternetArchiveBot on the 28th of November 2018 removed a dead link template from Auguste Comte without fixing the still dead link. I want assurance that this will not happen again. - 2601:443:37F:E430:5DCC:1A62:B4BC:5A10 (talk) 07:08, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
