Thanks from Sriramkri

Just read your messages on my profile. Thanks for the tips. Wanted to get your quick opinion about the CMUNE page. Is it okay, notability vice? I have stripped it of it's ambiguous information. Sriramkri (talk) 02:42, 29 April 2009 (UTC) --Sriramkri (talk) 02:42, 29 April 2009 (UTC)--Sriramkri (talk) 02:42, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for making the efforts etc, and yes, the strip-down version is better. The big problem remains, however - that it doesn't assert notability. It needs at least one reference to a reliable source, e.g. a mainstream newspaper, etc. As I've said in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/CMUNE, I couldn't find one.
The point of AfD is to decide if an article should exist, not what the content of it is. The issue is notability. If something isn't mentioned in the newspapers, or a book, or something reliable, then wikipedia shouldn't have an article on it; that's the consensus policy.
I don't think that CMUNE meets the general notability guidelines, unfortunately; if you can find a suitable reliable source, like a review in a 'proper magazine' (not a blog, etc), then I'll be very happy to withdraw my nomination for its deletion.
Hope this makes sense; the nomination is nothing personal etc, just trying to improve wikipedia.
Also, please note, worst case - if it's deleted - you can get a copy of the article in your own user space. If you can then find a reference later, then it can easily be recreated.
Best,  Chzz  ►  02:58, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
 • Absolutely not taking it personally! In fact, it's a learning curve for me. I understand and I am currently looking for references. It did get mentions on a magazine or two, but I am struggling to find the e-version. Nevertheless, I will go through the RS article again. Thanks. Sriramkri (talk) 03:06, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Sslota

Thanks for helping out that user. They seem to be part of a class at Springfield College (Massachusetts) that was assigned to make new articles on Wikipedia concerning sexuality. I've contacted about a dozen of the accounts involved and asked them to ask their instructor to contact me, as there are some obvious problems with assignments of this sort, starting with the use of Wikipedia as a web host for class assignments. That said, they've added some useful content of variable quality, although the imperative to add new articles has led to overlap, as in Female contraception vs. Birth control. Needless to say, I haven't heard from the instructor, and I don't expect to. They have a tiresome habit of going around to each others' articles and patting each other on the back while ignoring input from editors outside the class circle, but I'm encouraged to see that one, at least, has asked the community at large (well, you and me) for help. Acroterion (talk) 12:14, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Aha, thanks for that. I also raised it Wikipedia:Village_pump_(miscellaneous)#Student_project_Sslota at the pump, for reasons explained there.
Also, note - about my comments re. sectioning welcomes and using subst... as soon as I'd written that, I realized who you were (ie I noticed your experience), and instantly worried I might have sounded condescending; however, I didn't have the time to improve the tone of the note - had to log off. I hope no offense was given, certainly non intended, but I did worry that I was, sort-of, 'templating the regulars' so to speak.
Cheers,  Chzz  ►  17:51, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
No worries, I'm just having a cranky day, and no offense taken. I appreciate your help, and we'll see if there's any progress with the class project. The term ought to be almost over by now. Acroterion (talk) 20:02, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Glad to hear I didn't offend. I'm a bit concerned that school projects in general don't get handled well on wikipedia- they don't seem to get much support. I think we're missing out on what could be a valuable input to the project (handled correctly). So - I'll be very interested to see what comes out of my pump request. Rival brands

I felt that Rival brand would be an extremely unlikely typo; and that it could mislead people looking for information on brand rivalries. Frankly, given that I don't expect Rival Brand to last out the hour, it also seemed like the cleaner thing to do, as otherwise a G8 would have to be done later. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:45, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Cheers for that; no worries; was only curiousity, really - the user was asking for help on IRC, and just as someone else tried to move, you did yours; they thought something had gone wrong in the process causing the redir not to happen; I figured what had really happened from the history, hence seeking clarification as to why. Just to improve my own understanding, really. Thanks a lot,  Chzz  ►  20:54, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Bug in welcome template's use of REVISIONUSER

If you visit the current version of User talk:User390573, and click on the phrase "my own talk page", it will send you to User talk:ClueBot Commons, not to User talk:Chzz as intended. That is because the code "[]" incorrectly uses REVISIONUSER, which expands to the last user to edit that talk page (in this case, the cluebot) rather than to the user that inserted the notice into the talk page. Can you please fix this? Thanks. Eubulides (talk) 05:33, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Thank you very much for bringing that to my attention, and for the clear explanation; I will fix the template before using it again.  Chzz  ►  07:00, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
Fixed, with [].
Thanks to Splarka and TimStarling.
I will try to trawl through the old welcomes and fix them as much as possible.

Youtube!?

I was wondering mostly if you could tell me how to cite Youtube, because there's an article I have that I'm trying to improve, and unfortunately I tried looking and found nothing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Random Checkhead (talkcontribs) 01:32, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, but youtube is not considered a reliable source, and therefore you shouldn't cite it.
There was actually a discussion at the village pump on this very subject, in the last few days - can't find it at the moment. If I find it later, I'll add the link here.
If you need more help with this, let me know; give me the article name and details of what you're trying to do etc.

Found it. Wikipedia talk:External links#YouTube, yet again.  Chzz  ►  04:45, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

What if the information (a movie adaptation of a novel) came directly from the author's mouth? Would that still be unnaceptable? Random Checkhead (talk) 12:16, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

I'm not really sure. On the one hand, I do see your point - if the author has declated things via a youtube video. On the other hand - well, we've all seen that videos can be manipulated. Perhaps it would be acceptable to use careful wording; "In a video on youtube, the author claimed that blah blah" . But I'm really not sure; perhaps you could make the part in your user area (User:Random Checkhead/youtube), and ask for comments in the article talk page, and/or in Wikipedia talk:Reliable sources. I think that that is the approach I would take.
Hope this helps?  Chzz  ►  19:26, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't know how to create my own subpage. Rrrgh. I guess it's off to the reliable sources page! Thanks. (How do you create a subpage?) Random Checkhead (talk) 01:15, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the sound advice Chzz.

Great advice and was not about to get into any personal flame war over this. I think it was a childish act to remove it (when labeling it as Eurosceptic ranting) so soon but then it could have been seen as vandalism so I can understand many of the possible reasons for it, I had also formatted it very poorly at the time. I find it odd the page on the NSDAP is so basic with little detail, I know wikipedia is not a site solely for historical research but it is a resourceful place many do use and rely on for accurate or hard to find info at one consolidated site. Some think we should stop educating our people about history but then what do we learn from. Some say how tired this is but it was within one life time and that to me is not very long ago. Actually, Boris has written about some of this in the Telegraph (2002 article to google "What's Hitler got to do with the euro? Everything") which is still available online but to me this is not really a source as such, it is still classed as opinion. I only mentioned the Mayor as a joke really :) Enjoy the weekend. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Elfree (talkcontribs) 02:03, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi from Nebulae1

Hi
Thanks for the info.
Am still using user/book and sandbox :) and learning a lot.
But I wonder how many times can I edit on my own stuff in user/book or in sandbox only ??
For I experience that it's not been saved or renewed. Are am editing to fast or to much or to many times or often ?? Maybe is best if I write it down in my word before I put it on my sandbox or user/book ??
What is the different between user/book vs sandbox ??
How can I put in a picture ??
I have photobucket where I have my picture.

Thanks for this :)

Hi there.
Firstly, I see you've been playing with your signature, and unfortunately something has gone wrong, as the above didn't have your user name and links to your user and talk page etc. Please see Wikipedia:How to fix your signature.
Secondly, I see on your user page you used this code;
I building a Book/Fiction about Imperia and can be found there<br />
You don't need to use external links for pages on the Wikipedia, so instead, just use User:Nebulae1/Books/Fiction, which will look like this: User:Nebulae1/Books/Fiction
For more on this, see WP:LINKING.
Now, to address your questions;
 • You can edit pages as many times as you like, no problem at all. Many pages have been edited meny thousands of times. Out of interest, the most edited page currently is George W. Bush, which has 33,566 revisions. You can see these statistics in Special:MostRevisions
 • There are no problems at all with editing in your user area 'too much' or 'too fast' - in fact, you are encouraged to edit there as much as you like. Some people prefer to build articles offline (using Word or whatever), others build on-wiki. It's entirely down to personal preference.
Aaaaah, tea.
 • To add a picture, the simple syntax is - this produces the image shown here. Of course, there are many other options - see WP:IMAGES.
Any more questions, and you know where to find me. Best regards,  Chzz  ►  04:16, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

I enhanced my sign

Hi
I enhanced my sign with [Nebulae1 ►Chat 00:46, 3 May 2009 (UTC)] in preferences in singature box and marked raw signature under the box, and this is what I got as in Nebulae1 ►Chat 00:46, 3 May 2009 (UTC) and result is nice.
But I have a problem to get chat in to bold character. I guess we using Char or am gonna use Char.
Any suggestion?
Nebulae1 ►Chat 00:46, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
P.S.
How can I show syntax with out using it up?
also
using edit summary and saved after it gets this /* Hi */, and I can't saved then but if I del the space in between /* and H and H */, then saving works. Else I must do in twice and some time the changes do not follow. Is there I can do about it or is it normal??

Q1. You can do it with just <b> tags, but it's not very noticable in that font/size. If you look very closely, you can just about tell that the 'h' in chat is a bit wider;

Code;

<small><span style="border:1px solid #0000ff;padding:1px;"><b>Nebulae1</b> <font style="color:#accC10;background:#0000fa;">►<b>Chat</b> </font> </span></small>

Result; Nebulae1 Chat

Q2. To show code, put <NOWIKI> at the beginning and </NOWIKI> at the end. You can also use <pre> and </pre> around multiple lines; see Wikipedia:NOWIKI.
Q3. Don't use special characters like forward slash in section headings; it causes problems; hence the trouble you were having with /* Hi */

Depends what you want one for; a lot of people get a bit mixed up on what admins do. They just perform actions per policy - such as banning a user etc. But for warning users, marking pages for deletion, that kind of thing - anyone can do it. What's needed here? Please answer below; doesn't need another helpme - I'll be watching this page. Alternatively - maybe quicker - talk to us live. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  01:02, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
Hi. Thanks. Here is the quick run-down. There is a User named Theo789. He is a brand new user, brand new to Wikipedia. Prior to today, his User Name was IP Address User 63.215.27.57. I assume that this person, being brand new, does not quite know how Wikipedia operates. There is an article that I (and others) are working on ... and this new user has also been contributing to. The article is Philip Markoff. This is the problem. Every time someone edits the article and puts in a "negative" comment (i.e., one that he does not like, one that he does not agree with, one that upsets him, one that casts the accused criminal in a bad light, etc.), this user simply deletes the statement. This happens regardless of whether or not the edit is submitted with good, valid, reliable sources. You can look at the edit history of the article page. You can also look at the Talk Page ... particularly (on the Talk Page), the section toward the bottom labeled "Commentary". I (and others) have tried to reason with, explain, reach consensus with this new user. But, from his replies, I honestly don't think that he "gets" it. And, being new to Wikipedia, that is understandable on his part. Still, I do not want all my edits being deleted willy-nilly from the article, just because this new user does not like what the edits have to say. I have tried talking / reasoning. But, this new user just keeps back at it again ... deleting all my edits and placing his own in. So, I was hoping that someone (admin?) could perhaps work with this new guy on some level, to explain / guide him. Please let me know what is the best course of action. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 01:21, 1 May 2009 (UTC))
I see; OK, please leave it with me; I'll work on it. Leave it with me for a few days, I'll keep you updated.  Chzz  ►  06:05, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
So ... any luck? The guy's a ticking time bomb ... won't listen to reason ... and thinks it's "his way or no way at all" ... in my opinion. I really think he's being quite unreasonable. Have you (or another) been able to intervene at all? The article in question and its talk page are growing exponentially with his silliness. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 02:36, 3 May 2009 (UTC))

Hi I using All for one and one for all in my signature, and marked the box under the signature.

Its say I can do that, but else I have no idea. Except I can go back to default?

I looked at upload file, but it look like it upload new article or existing. I only want to upload a picture. I guess I can only upload real existing picture and not what I have made it self. When you upload a picture or article its will be for all in wiki?

Nebulae1  ►  This user sign is different from user page then when I put it here. I copyed your sign or what it called, but some thing is not working right. Your user sign have hoover both side not what am copyed from you. I only switched your user name with my own, that it all I did.

I guess I can't ask you to see if you got the same results ??

Else am learning - user:Nebulae1/test - am not sure this is right.

To answer your second question first, you should upload copyright-free pictures at commons. Follow the simple instructions there. Once complete, note the filename; it will instantly be available on wikipedia. Check it, by putting on a test page in your user area, such as User:Nebulae1/test.
Now, regarding your signature, I see that you are still having troubles, so please read the information below;

Custom signatures

It's possible to customise your signature, and you can put 'code' in it to have different colours, etc. Pictures aren't allowed; hence, mine isn't an icon, it's just text characters with different colours.

You put the code in your preferences signature box, and checkmark the 'user raw signatures'; please note that it's fiddly, and easy to get it wrong, so it's best to best signing in a user sandbox area.

When using 'raw signatures' in your preferences, you need to manually include the links to your user and talk pages.

An example code is;

<small><span style="border:1px solid #0000ff;padding:1px;"><b>Chzz</b> : <font style="color:#accC10;background:#0000fa;"> Chat </font> </span></small>

Which displays as Chzz :  Chat

Note that you should always include your name (or part of it), a link to your user page and talk page.

Perhaps the easiest way to learn more is simply to look at other peoples signatures, by editing the page they've signed on, and looking at the code. For an example page with several, ahem, interesting signatures, see the April 1st Request for signatureship.

For much more info on this, see Wikipedia:SIGNATURE#Customizing_your_signature.

If you need any help with it, ask here or talk to us live.

I think I changed it myself? Also, have you seen my replies in the section just below, "I enhanced my sign"?  Chzz  ►  20:51, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

The article you nominated for AFD has been moved to my page for cleanup. Can you please take another look. Also see notes as to notability on the talk page where comments are welcome. Ebonyskye (talk) 19:28, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm sorry, but as I said in the AfD, my concern is not so much with the content as it is with the notability issue; I don't think the album is notable, therefore I don't think we should have a separate article about it. The policy you quote on your page states, "In general, if the musician or ensemble that recorded an album is considered notable, then officially released albums may have sufficient notability to have individual articles on Wikipedia" - the key word here is 'may'.
As I see nothing particularly noteworthy about the specific album (in terms of coverage in the papers, chart positions, awards etc), I don't believe a separate article is warranted.
I'm sorry I can't be more positive on it, but that's my interpretation of policy. Of course I'll try to answer any questions that you might have. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  20:06, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

I suppose it wouldn't bother me all that much except, I look around at similar groups and find albums that are "out of print" and self-published [1], [2], [3], or nothing but a track list and idle for over a year with no edits [4], [5], [6], [7], [8] or pending release, and no refs at all, and no one seems to have a problem with those having lone article space. So, I guess I'm asking if we can make this album a stub like those others? Like you said, it "may" apply in this case... Just being optimistic! Ebonyskye (talk) 05:16, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

As above; personally, I'd say it wouldn't be notable. Others may have a different opinion. Yes, I / 'we' know there are lots of bad articles; we're working on it; see WP:OTHERSTUFF.  Chzz  ►  05:58, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

The thing about all of these is, Wikipedia strives to be portable - which generally means simple. Yes, it's possible to use all kinds of complex doce, but mostly it's best avoided. Consider the number of people who visit Wikipedia using mobile phones and other portable devices - let alone the many sites that take parts of Wikipedia pages and parse them for re-presentation in other forms. Anyway - to answer;
 • I've no idea what a 'zipper bar' is, sorry
 • You can use <big> to get bigger test. Example, <big><big><big><big>This is quite big</big></big></big></big> gives;

This is quite big

Hi there, and welcome :-)
First - don't panic about the article being deleted; nothing is ever 'lost' on Wikipedia. I have had your article userfied - that is, restored to your own user area. It is now in User:Oldsand/Institute for Tourism Studies.
You can work on articles in your user area; as they are not 'live', you are free to develop and improve the article there, and to get the opinion of others, and help, before making it live.
I will look at your article now, and add further comments soon on your own talk page.
Best wishes - and again, welcome to Wikipedia.  Chzz  ►  07:14, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Chzz, thanks for your prompt reply. I will inform you when the article is ready. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Oldsand (talkcontribs) 07:25, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Welcome messages

The issue is quanitity, not quality. You've been going at it for 250 edits. That's almost automated. You seem to be taking this not the way I intended it.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 07:15, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Without wanting to butt in & if I'm told to go away that's fine! But I think the welcoming like Chzz is doing is good-I didn't ever get one & when you start, a welcome message with a few pointers on is very useful. I think the massive templates with 25 links on are too many & complicated & confusing, but a welcome message is very nice & "welcoming". I doubt new users are going to start thinking this is a bot either. Just my two cents-hope it's OK-feel free to delete this if you want! Thanks! dottydotdot (talk) 14:48, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your comment; I've worked hard to make the welcome that I use as 'undaunting' and informal as possible, whilst still hopefully providing useful links etc. What do you think of user:chzz/w ? Cheers,  Chzz  ►  17:03, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
I like it, the only thing is the picture which seems to be a bit random, especially with the Japanese/Chinese underneath?! Overall, it's good-maybe we should do a little "survey" of people who've had different welcome messages placed on their pages by people & then ask them a few weeks later, provided they are still editing, what they thought of it & what could be better? dottydotdot (talk) 19:05, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Cool, thanks. Of course you can copy it (I don't own it); I've already encouraged several others to take a copy and make their own version. The cartoon is my own personal touch; it's Wikipe-tan; each to his own. It's Japanese, it says "welcome".
The idea of a survey sounds good; I do have doubts about the standard welcomes. To me, it sounds like, "Welcome, and don't do this, and don't do that, COI, RS, NPOV, V, 3RR, AfD, blah". I think that we focus far too much on the negative and forget the core idea - jump in and edit. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  19:19, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
I've done a slightly different one-much more simple at User:Dottydotdot/w. Any ideas as the best way to go about asking people? Also, on a different topic-with talkback templates-if someone has put a message on my page & I reply to them there & put Dottydotdot it puts a message on my page-am I meant to put in their username instead of mine? dottydotdot (talk) 19:49, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

(unindent) Looks good; I'd recommend having a link to the java talk to us live thingy, because it has proved extremely effective. You should come on to IRC yourself; I've found it extremely effective for helping n00bs get going.

Regards the survey - I really don't know; all I can think of is keeping a manual log; perhaps we could work together on coming up with a suitable 'survey template' we could use? Tell you what, I'll have a go at knocking something up (in the next few hours) and see what you think.

Regards talkback - you need to put the tb on their talk page; the idea is a) to keep conversation in one place, but by adding the tb to theirs, it will alert them to 'new messages'.

I'll get back to you about the survey shortly; for the purposes of our discussion, can I assume you'll be 'watching' this thread for a bit, so I don't need to keep using talkback? (Even better, get yourself sorted for IRC and we can chat about it in real time),  Chzz  ►  20:08, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Have now made user:chzz/survey - have a look, see what you think, feel free to edit it etc.  Chzz  ►  20:40, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Yeah that's awesome!-should we maybe have a central page on which people can answer & then if a few different welcomers use this template, we can look at all of the answers together-like this-User:Dottydotdot/surveyanswers.
I'm watching this page-I'll work on getting on irc sometime! dottydotdot (talk) 21:24, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback. I agree that a central system would be cool, but would also be tricky. I worry that the added complexity for the user to have to go to another page and fill in stuff there might put them off bothering; also, how would they 'fill it in' - would they have to sign on each line or what? I think it'd be tricky.
Anyway - for now, I've edited that survey a bit more, and in the spirit of WP:BOLD I think I'll give it a go, as a trial. I think the selection of people will be manual; I'll look back at some people I welcomed a month or two ago, and choose ones that have continued to be active. I'll let you know how it goes, of course; I'll collate the results of something.
And yes - please do get on IRC ASAP, for many, many reasons. If you've got java, it's as simple as clicking that link...give it a try, we don't bite (much)... If not, you'll have to download a client or something...let me know and I can help with that.
Cheers,  Chzz  ►  21:38, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
Cool, let me know! I can't get on the web Java-do you know the details like port etc. to get on with a client? Thanks! dottydotdot (talk) 21:42, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

(unindent) If you're using Windows, I suggest mIRC - in which case, grab it, run it, and do this bit with care;

 • In the list of servers, scroll down to 'Freenode', double-click on that folder icon thingy to expand it
 • Click once on 'Freenode random server' so it's highlighted
 • Click the 'select server' button
 • Click 'connect'
 • Type in /join #wikipedia-en-help

If you choose to use another client, the server name is irc.freenode.net on port 6667. More info is in WP:IRC.

G'luck; hope to see you there soon.  Chzz  ►  21:53, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

The short answer is no.
Remember that Wikipedia is live, so as soon as you create a page, it is available over the internet. All facts have to be verifiable - which means that the reader could check them for themselves, by getting the book, newspaper, or other reliable source that is referenced.
You can, however, create an article in your user space and work on it there.
This is the preferred method for working on new articles; it will not be visible to search engines, and you can play around and develop it as much as you like - including having no references, and adding them later. Once the article is in shape, get someone to look it over and then copy it to the live area.
For further help with any of this, you can always talk to us live.

Canvassing a DRV

This is canvassing (or, to be more precise, votestacking) because it is clear that most of the participants at the page you posted at voted Keep in the AfD. As such, it has been noted at the relevant DRV page for the closing admin to consider. Canvassing is disruptive to Wikipedia processes and repeated cases may lead to sanctions. Don't do that again, please. Black Kite 20:53, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

That post to WT:ARS was wholly inappropriate. It was blatant canvassing and I expect to never to see such behavior again from you. --MZMcBride (talk) 21:51, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

@MZMcBride: Let's not get self-righteous here. Chzz told you via IRC (before you posted this, if I recall correctly) that he didn't realize his post would be considered canvassing. So you had two options: take him at his word, or believe contrary. I see the latter approach has been taken, and as a result bad faith has been assumed. Now, he just apologized here. Hopefully we can all move on and accept his word on things. Killiondude (talk) 08:28, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

I actually have a question. How do I upload a picture onto someone's page. Wikipedia won't let me. They say I'm not authorized.UncleYoface (talk) 18:18, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

You can't upload pictures to Wikipedia until your account is autoconfirmed, which means 4 days and 10 edits; however, you probably don't want to. If the image is copyright-free (or your own and you are happy to give up copyright), then you should upload it to Wikimedia commons instead, at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Upload
Anyone can upload there; just follow the instructions - and that's where free images should go.
For more info, see WP:IMAGES. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  19:03, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Why did you nominate my article for deletion?

I worked for a very long time on that page. For you to delete it because you did not consider the sources to be reliable, I feel, was very disrespectful. Show me a source that isn't reliable and I will show you somewhere in Wikipedia where that source has been used as reference in other articles within Wikipedia, as I've checked all this out ahead of time. If it is not found elsewhere in Wikipedia, however, I will remove that particular content. But to delete the entire article was unnecessary and far too done hastily.--Jklein212 (talk) 03:13, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry that you feel the way you do, but it was in no way disrespectful. It is not 'your article' - see WP:OWN.
I appreciate the work that you have put in to the page; I also work very hard to improve Wikipedia. I began editing the article, and realised that information contained within it was not supported by appropriate sources. First, I tried to find suitable sources. When I was unable to do so, following the Wikipedia policies that have been agreed by consensus, I removed the unsourced information from the biography. I explained my actions in both my edit summary, and on the talk page of the article.
When I had removed the unsourced information, I realised that there was very little left. I then searched on reliable news sites, and was unable to find a single source to support the very basic information - ie the Date of Birth, the job, etc. Therefore, with an unsourced biography of a living person that did not assert notability (per Wikipedia:Notability (people)), I nominated it for deletion.
I did not 'delete the article' - I merely nominated it for deletion; there can now follow a 7-day discussion, where any and all interested editors can discuss the issues. If we're able to make the article sufficient to pass the policy requirements, I will be perfectly happy for it to remain on Wikipedia.
Regarding other articles with unreliable sources - all I can say about that is, we're working on it. If I come across other such articles, I will act in the same manner. Please see WP:OTHERSTUFF.
As regards my actions being hasty, in respect of BLP articles, I won't reiterate the policy - instead, here is a quotation from the founder of Wikipedia on the topic;

I can NOT emphasize this enough. There seems to be a terrible bias among some editors that some sort of random speculative 'I heard it somewhere' pseudo information is to be tagged with a 'needs a cite' tag. Wrong. It should be removed, aggressively, unless it can be sourced.*

Jimmy Wales

*Jimmy Wales (2006-05-16). "Zero information is preferred to misleading or false information". WikiEN-l electronic mailing list archive. Retrieved on 2009-04-08.

I will be very happy to help improve the article in any way I can.
If you have any concrete policy-based argument for keeping the article, I suggest that you make your points in the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jonathan Hay (publicist) - where your opinions are just as valued as mine, or those of any other editor.
I'm truly sorry if I have upset you in any way; my intent is to make Wikipedia better, and nothing else. That's why I helped you before (with the 'hatnotes' and other help), and that's also the same reason why I nominated the article for deletion. Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  03:40, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

I do understand where you are coming from. I only referred to the article as being 'my article' because I created the page and have put much effort into it, but I did not literally mean 'my article'. I do feel that this is a very notable individual and would be a helpful Wikipedia article, so I would like to attempt to edit it appropriately. I will argue my case in the deletion review page, but if they agree with you and the page is then deleted, I will begin a user page to edit this article until it is better. I'm asking for you to then help me with it, if that is the case.--Jklein212 (talk) 03:59, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Of course, I'll help if possible. The first, most important question, is regarding notability - indeed, that's what the AfD is all about.
Does this person meet the requirements in Wikipedia:Notability (people). If you think that the person meets the criteria in there, and can produce suitable references, then we can move forward from there. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  04:32, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Okay, thank you.--Jklein212 (talk) 04:40, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Susan B. Neuman article

5/7/09 Thanks for helping with the repeated reference problem on this page. I deleted the dead link as there are ample references listed at the end of the line and the statement regarding "many published books, articles and presentations" is documented heavily by virtue of the LONG list of citations and references on this page. I added two additional citations in the section for early career, so the tag re: "section needing citations" may be removed. I am not sure if you added this notation, or some other wiki editor did. Thanks again for your helpJourneyWomanSLP (talk) 03:24, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Dan Guenther

Dear Chzz,

Thank you again for taking time with my poor project. I had to get Mr. Guenther to tell me where I might find outside sources concerning his birth and life and he did get me to the Directory of a leading literary magazine.

I have changed the entry and deleted some more things which Mr. guenther is trying to get citations for---such as his degrees and medals. (Most of the medals he says might not be sourceable and will have to go but he asks me so I ask you: he gave me that info based on fellow Marines listing such medals on wikipedia, how did they verify same).

Did I improve the article and next?

Mark Kohut —Preceding unsigned comment added by MKohut (talkcontribs) 15:27, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Please remember to 'sign' your posts by putting ~~~~ at the end.
As I explained before, the article still needs a lot more references throughout - for example. how can I verify that he was born in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1944? Same goes for all the facts.
The first reference to www.pw.org is not valid, because it was written by the subject, and is thus a self reference. Also, it is important to use correct inline references, and not to put external links within the body of the article.
There are far too many external links
The list of poems is probably unneeded, or perhaps some examples could be given in a paragraph format, if they are notable.
Cheers,  Chzz  ►  15:40, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Dear Chzz. Thanks. I am awaiting other places to verify his birth and place of birth....Re: PW.org.....

This self-reference did need to be 'accepted' by Poets & Writers' mag. Which is a long-running major literary periodical. They verify somehow, with calls to college or other orgs referenced by the author, I do believe. Should I get verification that they do that?

Otherwise, I do not see how, since birth certificates and places where one lived when born are not online, any entry can be begun. Does the author need to have had a biography written about him, where we can assume the biographer did get these facts right?

If I cannot source those details properly, then I must just list his name and books and a few other links?

I will eliminate some external links. I thought they showed enough 'reality' to substantiate the non-advertorial nature of Guenther's achievements.

I will eliminate the medals, also unsourceable as mentioned.

Thank You,

MKohut (talk) 14:20, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Regarding the Poets and Writers; if that is the case - that they verify facts - and if that can be shown, then perhaps that reference could be a reliable source; I'm really not sure. Because it was clearly written by the author, it screamed out at me as a self-reference; if you want to check on it, I suggest asking on Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard.

Other authors (and bios in general) usually do find a reliable source with DOB etc - often the information is provided in an interview piece in a newspaper, or a book about the author. Of course, there are many articles on Wikipedia that lack such things, but again, that is a problem to be addressed, rather than a defense to 'add to the problem'; I often recommend that writers look at featured articles as an example of how things 'should be done'; for example, in this case, perhaps James Robert Baker, Nigel Kneale, Mario Vargas Llosa, William Gibson, etc. I'm not indicating that the article needs to be raised to these exalted standards; just that they might give ideas.

Indeed, it is often only possible to have short articles, if sources are not available. A short, factual, balanced and well-cited article is far preferable. It can always be expanded at a later date.

Good luck,  Chzz  ►  14:58, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Chzz. Thank you again. In remaking this article, I reread and learned that an interview cited--from 2007 by someone at a major (enough) university, gave Guenther's birth and place, etc. So, I have used that to verify beginning basic facts. I am also checking with Poets & Writers Magazine, just to educate us all.

I condensed poetry links---to the two major issues. I dropped his medals' listing.

I created, half-created proper footnoting within the body---but I seemingly am too stupid to figure out how to get the number of the footnote to match the name of the source. I will reread the directions and try again later.....tired......lotsa detail in the doing.

You are such a prompt responder. Must be 'steady volunteer work' for you.

MKohut (talk) 16:54, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Chzz. I had used poet David St. John as a model for this, but it was not the best choice it seems.

MKohut (talk) 16:56, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

I've fixed up the references, added cite tags, used named references, and a few other bits. I'll try to work on the article more soon. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  01:52, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Chzz. You shouldn't have.....done so much. I was going to reread ALL the directions for citations and do it right. I finally remembered that the initial coding needed to be much fuller than I had done.

Thank you again.

Thaks for the assistance

Thanks for making the name change on article Boys' Town (Engadine)

The original request came from an unknown IP user who's only two posts were to my talk page. Instead of simply ignoring the request, as it appeared to have some merit, I posted the helpme tag, as I was not in any position to be able to address the issue at this time.

Thank you for making the page move. Dbiel (Talk) 12:31, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Aha! I wasn't sure if it was that, or you were the IP (just not logged in). In that case, ingore my messages. I'll copy 'em over to the IP's talk.
Anyway - all sorted. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  12:36, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
OK, so I've put a message on the talk page of the IP, and also I've sent an email via the address on the organizations website. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  13:17, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks again for all you do to make Wikipedia a better place. Dbiel (Talk) 20:49, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your help

Thanks for your help reviewing the Rooftops (film) article I was working on. ☺

PeramWiki (talk) 15:01, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

No problem at all.
I have further edited it today, and added details to the references using cite tags. Please note, these are not at all necessary - I just find that they make the reference format more consistent, and although they look complex, once you are used to it it is actually easier. For further information about this, see my 'tips' in user:chzz/help/refs.
The best way to further improve it would probably be to cite information from books. I see here that there is plenty of information out there, although some of the books are not available to preview over the net, so a trip to a library might be needed.
One thing that I'm sure should be added to the article - it's Wise's last film, except for a TV movie. I'm not quite sure how to word that, and which reference to use...perhaps you have some ideas?
Best of luck; please do ask for help at any time.  Chzz  ►  05:48, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Thank you

Hey, thanks for helping me man. Next time I want help I'll come to you. Leave me a message anytime. Meteorman7228 (talk) 18:29, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

 Done

question

Hey, on my article Tony Gagliano I have a link to Gaetano Gagliano , but when Gaetano link is clicked, it does not go directly to the person I want. It gives you an option of 2 people. How can we make it go straight to Gaetano Gagliano (businessman) ? thanks interfan_910 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Interfan 910 (talkcontribs) 20:15, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi there. I see that you've managed to fix it yourself - cool :-)
For more info, see WP:LINKING
Please could you start to put in an edit summary every time you edit, so that other people can see what changes you have made.
Also, please remember to 'sign' your comments on talk pages, by putting ~~~~ at the end. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  08:16, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Administrator

Hey Chzz, are you an admin? I really think that you should be. Wireless Keyboard: Chat 01:59, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

No, I'm not an admin. You can always check, in rollbacker.
Quicker and neater, if you go to Special:Preferences, 'Gadgets', and checkbox Navigation popups, then whenever you move your mouse over a user name, you'll see their rights in the popup box.
I might think about becoming an admin one day, but not yet. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  08:39, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Ref. M. Night Shyamalan
Dealing with this on User talk:Moulee  Chzz  ►  05:21, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Thank you, but i have added the reson in the discussion page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:M._Night_Shyamalan#Pronounciation And i made the changes based on reference # 2 which isprovided in the article. I see the changes i made has been removed again.Moulee (talk) 05:35, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
I am not being pushy or desperate, the reason i reverted it even when he gave an explanation is because i added the reason in discussion page. And when i asked for an explanation the reply was a mock and not an explanation. Moulee (talk) 05:56, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
I understand; thank you for your patience, and for listening. A few important points;
""You can edit this page right now" is a core guiding check on everything that we do. We must respect this principle as sacred."
It is absolutely not necessary for an IP user to make an account.
 • The user did use an edit summary, and is quite right in insisting on them. Please make sure that you always use an edit summary.
 • When people disagree with your contributions, relax. There is no deadline. Discuss it with them; as long as you stick to discussing the article, and not the person, then usually it's possible to come to some agreement that everyone is happy with. Strive to assume good faith, even in the face of provocation.
 • If you can't reach a consensus, there are plenty of ways to get help. There is no need to get frustrated, annoyed, angry or anything like that. Stick to concise, clear explanations of why you think xxx should be added/removed, and refer to Wikipedia policy wherever possible.
 • If you're having problems, ask for help. For example, ask other contributors for their opinion - check the major contributors for the article, and leave a note on their talk page asking them to please participate in the discussion on the talk page etc. You could also ask similarly on a relevent project page. The more people who discuss the issue, the easier it becomes to reach a consensus.
I hope this gives some ideas; believe me, I do understand your frustrations. I learned the above lessons the hard way.
In this specific case, looking at this version of the page, it strikes me that all the alternate language versions are starting to make the lede section quite cumbersome and difficult to read. One option, perhaps, would be to not have any of the foreign script details in the first section, but instead to explain them in more detail in the body of the article? I'm not sure about this - I'm just mentioning it as, perhaps, it is an example of the kind of productive discussions that could take place.
If I can help you, in any way at all, please ask me. Best wishes,  Chzz  ►  06:55, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Thx, i am bit frustated yes, but i am not desperate to edit the page again, but all i wonder is what is wrong if i edit the page based on the solid reference given in the page, it looks like i can remove valid information from a page and bluntly give an explanation that "those lines should not be there because i dont like it".

The other reason i reverted it back soon because, the IP address that edited the page was traced to Bangalore, i am not being judgementel or biased, i am using wikipedia for the past 4 years, though i have not participated in any discussion or editing, i usually follow all the articles i go through the talk page, and most of the Tamil pages or pages related to it are vandalized by IP addresses from Bangalore, I am not acussing but what noticed.

Thank you for your advise and tips. Moulee (talk) 07:14, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

OK, no problems :-) There was no problem with your edit - yes, sourced, etc - the problem was, as soon as someone else removes it, that's the time to stop, discuss, etc. If you repeat the same edit, everything tends to spiral into an edit war, and before you know it accounts are blocked etc.
As far as I can tell, IP addresses 59.92.152.43 and 59.92.188.57 are dynamically allocated addresses, owned by DSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) in New Dehli - if my searching serves me correctly, this is the government-run national backbone, and there is no reverse DNS to pin down where the address originates? If you know more about that, then please do enlighten me. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  07:47, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
I've replied in the article talkpage -Talk:M._Night_Shyamalan#Pronounciation 59.92.135.93 (talk) 08:41, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
User:Moulee said i am editing from Bangalore..it is wrong.. i live in Madhya Pradesh(upper region), few miles away from New Delhi. 59.92.135.93 (talk) 08:55, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Here you get te answer from the person itself. Moulee (talk) 09:10, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
The 'heart of India' eh? Madhya_Pradesh looks nice.
Moulee, I don't understand your comment - what 'answer', what person?
Cheers,  Chzz  ►  09:18, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Ah nothing, from where the IP is from, nohing serious. Moulee (talk) 09:27, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Ok, no worries. It's unusual, that such large IP blocks don't have a reverse DNS facility. Interesting stuff.  Chzz  ►  09:37, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Hi again, i found this ip tracker page, tried with different set of dynamic IPs, i guess it gives pretty detailed info about the IP, again just an opinion http://www.geobytes.com/ipLocator.htm . Have a great day.Moulee (talk) 08:04, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
