Topics[edit]

I was interested in adding to the page for the story of Handsome Lake: How America Was Discovered. However, upon searching I found that there is not an actual page for this. Here is the message i received, "You may create the page "Handsome lake how america was discovered", but consider checking the search results below to see whether the topic is already covered." I would possibly want to create a new page for this tale.

Another page I was considering revising is the page for Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay "Self-Reliance" [[1]] The essay lacks 4 points that I had in my notes from reading the story. These points being numbered 1-4 about prayer, the soul, the mind, improvement vs not improving.

Another page I was considering adding to is for "Bartelby the Scrivener" [[2]] inspired by our in class group work, Bartleby as a hero or a villain. That section is not on the page and I thought it would be interesting for people to look at Bartleby in another way besides saying "no" to what he doesn't want to do, or just being complacent.

Instructor Comments[edit]

All of these options look promising, Alexisyos. However, you'll want to keep in mind that Wikipedia entries should contain facts, not analysis. This means, for example, that though you might want to add a section to the entry for Bartleby, the Scrivener about the difficulty of deciding whether Bartleby is a hero or villain, you would need to include that information only insofar as other critics have already discussed this topic. Then, you would be summarizing the findings of other scholars and linking to their works, so researchers have a better idea of the complexity of the story. If you simply added a summary of our class discussion, then the edits would probably be flagged for violating the prohibition against original scholarship on Wikipedia. The same concern goes for Self-Reliance. While you may want to contribute to a more well-rounded summary of the essay, be sure that you do not add anything that can't be backed up with textual evidence or with the words of other scholars. Finally, I think it's fascinating that there is no page for the Handsome Lake myth. However, note that there is a page for Handsome Lake the person. Perhaps you could add more information about this particular story, and add a spur page, linking to his page, that summarizes this story and provides summaries of criticism on it. I look forward to seeing what you decide!

Finally, a note about formatting. Above, you've included markup for external links, rather than internal links, for your topics. Links to internal Wikipedia articles should be formatted like this: Self-Reliance, not this [3]. Nadinecross78 (talk) 19:40, 6 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

List of Contributions[edit]

The topic I would like to focus on is the story of handsome lake. I did further research after reading your comments and did find that there is a page for the person, Handsome Lake.

I would like to edit the Handsome lake (person) page and add some information about there also being a story titled Handsome Lake.

I will create a spur page for Handsome Lake, the story, that will have an internal link to Handsome Lake (the person).

This spur page will include a summary that is not based on anyone's viewpoint, but based on just how the story presents itself.

On this page I will also add other scholarly interpretations of other people's findings and criticism on Handsome Lake, the story.

I will also add an external link that will take Wiki users to a website with with the story.

Peer Feedback[edit]

appearance: It looks like you have a good grasp of how to use wikipedia and what you want to contribute. The only thing missing are internal links, but that can be easily fixed. neutrality: Your list of contributions seems neutral and follows wiki's guidlines. notability: Your points would all add notable information to the page you want to revise. redundancy: Your edits don't seem to show any redundancy with any other information on the page. relevance: Your edits are well-focused on American literature and the different stories and information that stem from Handsome Lake's story. focus: Your focus seems incredibly on point! I assume you will put the link to the Handsome Lake story on your spur page as well, which should help to give it more well-rounded information and make for a more developed page.
