Cleanup Required

The opener in the article is very focused on his (numerous) achievements. It is so centred on them that it fails to mention which club he currently plays for, where he is in his career, anything about his personal life or any other part of the article. The of ODI ?

As in layman's use, ODI cricket refers to the men's game only. When Sachin broke the 200 run barrier, even many cricket connoisseurs hailed him as the first person ever to do so, not as the first male (Belinda Clarke passed 200 in Women's one day criket in 1997). Isn't Women's one day criket considered as "ODI Cricket"? or did the pundits just neglect the women's game? or is "ODI criket" defined as "Men's ODI criket"? I note that when statistics are shown on TV or on Cricinfo, Women's records donot find a place. As for this page we need a consensus. Define ODI Cricket (One day International Cricket) ? . • Totally agree. Seeing the continuous addition and deletion of 'men's ODI' and Belinda Clark, I too wanted to bring this up for discussion to arrive at a consensus.

1.Its true that everywhere when one refers to 'ODI' it implicitly means men's ODI whereas the term "women's ODI" is explicitly mentioned to refer to the female version of the game.see this [1] and this [2] on cricinfo.com.

2.Even in other 'gender-separated' sports this convention is followed. See for ex. football and women's football, baseball and women's baseball, bodybuilding and female bodybuilding etc.

3.In almost all sports the absolute record is held by men. Except for this one I dont know any in which it is the other way around. But the records and statistics of the male and female versions of the game are not usually mixed/compared. For ex. take Belinda Clark's article itself. It mentions 'Most runs by an Australian in the World Cup (1,151)'. But then the most runs by an Australian in the world cup is actually by Ricky Ponting (1,537). [3] . So do we include the records of male players when mentioning the record of a female player ?. Clearly we dont do that. Men's cricket and Women's cricket are separate games.

4. That they are seperate games is also confirmed by this ICC classification of official cricket here. [4]. Whereas men's ODI is played according to standard ODI playing conditions, women's ODI is played according to standard women's ODI playing conditions.

So to sum up, Sachin in indeed the first person to hit a double century in ODI. and Belinda is the first person to hit a double century in women's ODI. and I think we should not compare them. They are separate games, but that really means that the distinguisher is needed. ODIs encompass both versions of the game, therefore it's necessary to state which specific version the record applies to. It's not the case with almost all records because the men's version records generally are higher than the women's, but in this case it isn't. —SpacemanSpiff 17:03, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Well i totally agree with Mgtm7m. "ODI Record books" only show that of men's; and women's record are separately titled as "women's ODI records", for the obvious reason that they are different games that cannot be compared in a single statistical table . I disagree. In most sports, it is assumed that the woman is slower, throws a discus a shorter distance etc even when the object is lighter, and there has never been a woman who went faster/further/higher than the men's champion in athletics, swimming etc. But in the news, people always say "Australia's women played an ODI" not "Australia played a WODI" so there may be confusion. Men's records are higher, which is not surprising as the women's matches were played on the same grounds and it's not as easy to hit lots of boundaries, and they also play less matches so they can accumulate less, so the clarification doesn't hurt at all YellowMonkey (vote in the Southern Stars and White Ferns supermodel photo poll) 05:47, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Mumbai vs bombay

I don't understand why sachin's birthplace is mentioned as bombay on wikipedia. It hurts local sentiments bigtime. Sachin tendulkar is considered as a great representative of marathi people as well as sports ambassador of India. He always calls himself to be a proud indian and mumbaikar. City's indian name has been Mumbai from its inception and it's been many years that the international english name of the city being changed to mumbai from bombay. I would make the point that a persons place of birth is a matter of historical record and if that country or city later changes its name that does not alter where they were born and the place should normally recorded as it was at their birth with a note as to what the place is now called. However the name of the city in question here has not changed, merely the accepted anglicisation of the name, so it is correct to use Mumbai as far as I am concerned. --LiamE (talk) 05:22, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

I think player's sports achievements are more important than birthplace. As far as birthplace issue is concerned, I think newer names should be preferred. Just imagine when people use wikipedia after 100 years, they will get totally confused to see very old names of places. Information must be updated regularly. Afterall, wikipedia is not only for gathering information but it is also for learning from it and using it for benefit of all. Awkward references to old names would start accumulating problems gradually. Also, as correctly stated by kunwar, consistancy is not maintained in using old names for all people. This is true as it is very difficult to maintain status quo. The best option is keeping all the documents updated. Being a new user, I am not entitled to make amendments in this document. Er, no. It's not the international version that's changed, the city was officially "Bombay", so the official name changed. I agree. "Mumbai" as a term only became the name for the city in recent times, and when Tendulkar was born, the city was called Bombay, officially, universally. It is not "wrong information", simply information that was correct at the time of Tendulkar's birth. It should stay as Bombay. We even have the modern term in the article. Mockery of the article

If there is a controversy section, this issue should get a prominent part in it (atleast half). This was huge at that time and he hasn't been involved in any other non-cricket controversies. I agree that it was pretty huge news, but is it in the context of Tendulkar or in the context of the Government of India? I think the Lead section is too statistic heavy. The second paragraph does not need to be in there (in my opinion). I think the first paragraph says it well enough (stuff like ~considered best ever player... ~holder of many records). I think many consider him the greatest batsman of all time. Bradman may be great but he played at a time when no one knew how to play cricket properly and the level of competition and expectancy was far lower. Sachin's records prove that he is the greatest. At the very least the ones already used in the article should be got rid of, but in any case I'm not really sure the gallery is very adds much in any case. The commons link at the bottom of the article is intended to include photos and the like related to Tendulkar and does the same job, albeit one click further away. Comment on recent GA nomination

While it is not strictly a criteria that the person who nominates an article be one of the main contributors, that Sehmeet singh (talk · contribs) has not made a single edit to the article or cosulted other editors is a bad idea. Having contributed to the article, I have concerns about the sourcing and don't believe the problems can be quickly addressed. There is a clear issue of balance, not necessarily POV but in putting things in proportion. The article has 1,000 words on Tendulkar's international career between 1989 and 1999, in which time he played 73 Tests and over 200 ODIs. In contrast there are nearly 1,600 words on the year 2007 to 2010, covering 42 Tests and 68 ODIs. Something is clearly not right. The Champions League T20, in the grand scheme of things a domestic competition which does not have the same significance as an international series, has its own stubby section. The planning behind the article is non-existant, and it shows in its haphazarrd structure. The international and the domestic are treated separately as if they never interacted, which goes against common sense as when international cricketers lose form they return to their clubs to refind it. There are also entire paragraphs which are unsourced. These are not minor issues and are obvious without wasting a reviewer's time. I suggest that nomination be withdrawn. The citation for his having influenced games with wis bowling "on more than one occassion" is a report on a single match. Sachin Tendulkar Nickname Master Blaster

The infobox currently has three nicknames: "Little Master", "Tendlya", and "The God of Cricket". The first two are sourced to Tendulkar's Cricinfo profile, and the latter (slightly less reliably IMO) to bollywood.com. It is important to include sources when adding material to articles so that the information can be checked. "Master Blaster" seems a bit too close to "Little Master" for me to think they're both worth including. To be honest, I'm tempted to follow Cricinfo's path and just go for two, getting rid of "The God of Cricket". They will have had the same issue and have decided not to list every single one. I can't say why, but faced with the matter here I just don't think a long list of nicknames is helpful, and lots of them appear pretty similar. This from a few months ago was ludicrous.
