"Macca's" in Australia

The current article states:
"McCafé is a café-style accompaniment to McDonald's restaurants. The concept was created by McDonald's Australia, where it is marketed as Macca's, starting with Melbourne in 1993."

There are a couple of problems with this.

  • The name "Macca's" is indeed used in Australia, both by the company and by the public, but generally it is used as a synonym for the entire restaurant (i.e. "McDonald's"), not as a synonym/name for the café (which is still only branded as McCafé).
  • The citation does demonstrate official use of the name Macca's, and does note that the "world’s first McCafé" opened in Melbourne in 1993, but there is nothing on the linked page to back up the (incorrect) notion that Macca's = McCafé.

A minimal fix would be to the following text:
"McCafé is a café-style accompaniment to McDonald's restaurants. The concept was created by McDonald's Australia (locally marketed as Macca's), starting with Melbourne in 1993."

However the above minimal amendment is still not as clear as it could be, and I am not convinced that a sub-section on McCafé is the right place to mention the name "Macca's".

On the other hand, I do think that common alternative names for McDonald's should indeed be mentioned in the article. "Macca's" is clearly one of them, but perhaps also "Mickey D's".

Late response, but if you're still looking for a response, then here you go. I would agree about most of what you said, except the Mickey D's. Having lived in Australia for most of my life, the only place where I hear people say "McDonalds" is from tourists and foreigners. And yes, Maccas should get a mention. But I tend to disagree with Mickey D's though. While I've not spent too much time in the US (albeit being the place where I've travelled most extensively to), a lot of people still say McDonalds (although that might just be Santa Barbara). Split criticism into a separate article Criticism of McDonald's

I think the criticism section is now overly long and should be split into its own article, with only a summary remaining here. I note that this article existed as stand-alone in the past but was merged here, with very little discussion, over 10 years ago. The article itself is also very long and I think the amount of criticism here makes sense. It may be a lot for another page, but considered proportionally to the rest of the page, it is not undue weight. That said, the criticism is notable enough that it also deserves its own article. Discrepancy in number of employees

The article summary says McDonald's has 1.7 million employees, while the side bar says 200,000. The former number includes the employees of franchisees, while the latter is just corporate employees. Most other articles about franchisor companies include franchisee employees, but that isn't universal. 2601:601:D00:2390:DB7:E9CF:C9B:E7DB (talk) 22:02, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

I created a section based upon their climate change efforts, which is lacking in the article as it stands.

Economic Efforts

McDonald’s Corporation has joined the United Nation’s Race to Zero campaign, which strives for zero emissions by 2050, and also takes part in SBTi (Science Based Target initiatives)’s Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign. McDonald’s Corporation is a large player in both the fast-food restaurant industry and the global business industry, whose many first-tier supplying industries including dairy, wheat, meat, etc., are at-risk to climate change and global warming. In America, the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) impose strict laws federally surrounding environmental impacts that McDonald’s must follow, or face shut down. By these laws amongst others in the U.S., McDonald’s Corporation is obligated to maintain certain emissions standards and is actively lowering their contributions to the global issue of climate change through more eco-friendly materials and practices.

McDonald's eco-friendly practices are far reaching. First, McDonald's Corporation recycles their used cooking oil, utilizing it to fuel more than half of their delivery trucks. Next, they're reducing emissions in their supply chain of beef, since they're one of the top beef buyers in the world and beef supply emissions are in the top three highest carbon outputs in their entire supply chain. Then, physically making each restaurant more sustainable, using solar power and reducing water waste, as well as cutting down drive-thru idle times, since cars in idle produce a lot of carbon. Finally, McDonald's Corporation is working on the eco-friendliness of their packaging, pledging to have 100% of their packaging composed of recycled, renewed, or certified materials and to place recycling bins in their restaurants by 2025.

Not done for now: This proposed addition is written like an advertisement. It also sounds a lot like an opinion piece or essay, which is not appropriate. It includes introductory material (such as "McDonald's Corporation is a large player [...]") that seems unnecessary for the proposed additional section. Please ensure that edits you make or request are your original writing and not pasted from other sources. Content that is found to be in violation of copyright policies is deleted quickly. Ideally, proposed additions should be written for Wikipedia; other texts, even if you have written them yourself, do not usually meet the Style Guidelines. Actualcpscm (talk) 15:02, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
It has no opinions at all in actuality, so I'm not following your critique that it's an opinion piece. Also, you're welcome to check out the sources and see that I haven't copied and pasted any of the content, thanks for the compliment. If you could give actual examples of what you're talking about, I could work with you--as it stands right now, I think your understanding of the addition is misconstrued. Goldenen01 (talk) 18:32, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
Goldenen01 - I did not say it was an opinion piece, I said it was written like one, which refers to style. Please refer to WP:NPOV and WP:MOS for precise guidelines on how to write content for Wikipedia. Some examples that stand out as being stylistically questionable: "McDonald's is a large player in [...] the global business industry" - what does that even mean? "impose strict laws federally" - strict according to whom? "face shut down" - all firms must comply with applicable laws, this is a dramatized version of "laws must be followed". "actively lowering their contributions to the global issue of climate change" - grammatically unclear and awkward. "first", "next", "finally" - these are stylistic additions that are rarely appropriate for an encyclopedia, because they convey argumentativeness. The entire last sentence - Wikipedia heavily favours a reductive and objective writing style, for example: "McDonald's has pledged to use only recycled, renewed, or certified materials for packaging." It is unclear what "certified" means here. Please be aware that these examples are not isolated issues to fix; they are examples of a general stylistic mismatch between your writing and encyclopedic content on Wikipedia.
I'm glad that you did not copy and paste content from elsewhere. Nonetheless, the requested edit does not match style requirements, and the introduction to McDonald's remains unnecessary. I wonder why you included it - could you clarify?
Additionally, please be aware that edit requests should only be made or re-opened for suggestions you consider, in good faith, to be uncontroversial in accordance with WP:EDITXY. COVID 19 Pandemic section

The article mentions that McDonalds closed "most" indoor dining areas during the pandemic. While this is true it fails to mention other ways of eating out. I know at the McDonalds in the locale that I live in, management set out tables and allowed outdoor dining when it was allowed in California and some franchises chose to "modernize" their indoor environments until the restrictions were lifted. Exiting Russian market after its invasion of Ukraine

After more than 30 years of operations in the country, McDonald’s Corporation announced it will exit the Russian market and has initiated a process to sell its Russian business. This follows McDonald’s announcement on March 8, 2022, that it had temporarily closed restaurants in Russia and paused operations in the market.[1]

The humanitarian crisis caused by the war caused by Russia, and the precipitating unpredictable operating environment, have led McDonald’s to conclude that continued ownership of the business in Russia is no longer tenable, nor is it consistent with McDonald’s values. While McDonald's restaurants in Ukraine were closed (24 February - 2 November) the Company continues to pay full salaries for its employees in the country and continues to support local relief efforts led by Ronald McDonald House Charities. Across Europe, the McDonald’s System is supporting Ukrainian refugees through food donations, housing and employment. On 22 of September Mcdonlads reopened three restaurants in Kyiv, over the next two months did a wider reopening in other Ukrainian cities. [2] Now Mcdonalds in Ukraine is working successfully. "The return of a major American company is, first and foremost, a signal to international businesses that they can operate in Ukraine, even despite the conditions of war. These are jobs and taxes for the Ukrainian budget, the survival of our economy in times of Russian aggression", - said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba.[3]

As a result of its exit from Russia, the Company expects to record a charge, which is primarily non-cash, of approximately $1.2-1.4 billion to write off its net investment in the market and recognize significant foreign currency translation losses previously recorded in shareholders’ equity.[4] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nastiakunychak (talkcontribs) 13:54, 25 April 2023 (UTC)

Chris Kempczinski requests

Hello, editors! On behalf of McDonald's, I've submitted a few requests to update the page for president and CEO Chris Kempczinski. In addition to a suggested addition about his current tenure, I've proposed adding mention of his Economic Club of Chicago speech and adding additional text about his tenure as president of McDonald's USA.

Are any editors who keep an eye on the McDonald's article able to take a look at the requests? Thanks for any assistance. MattMcDonalds (talk) 20:33, 22 June 2023 (UTC)

Done @PlanetJuice: The existing citation ("The World's Largest Employers". WorldAtlas. February 15, 2018. Retrieved March 29, 2019) provides this information, so I made the change prior to looking at Talk, since it didn't seem controversial. If you feel that the source is not sufficient, please feel free to revert. Personally, I think that the number in the lede should ONLY include the employees of McDonald's CORPORATION, but people think of the folks working in their local McDonald's as working FOR McDonald's so I don't know the best way to handle it except to add the "majority works for franchisees" phrase. Thanks  • Bobsd •  (talk)
Hm, I think I checked the source when I reviewed this, but I probably declined this because those specific numbers (90%, 150,000) weren't sourced. Probably should have clarified that. Thanks though, and agreed that it is unclear/misleading without the phrase about the number of employees working for franchises. PlanetJuice (talkcontribs) 17:49, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

Legal Cases: United Kingdom

This is the WP Revision as of 10:30, 18 July 2023 (which I changed)

This would later be followed by further allegations that would come out in 2023, when more women would described the same thing, but also with racial overtones, as in one instance a black woman was referred by a white male colleage by a racial slure, before asking her if she wanted to look at his penis, because he wanted to make a "black and white baby" with her. [247]

This is the cited BBC article:

A 17-year-old current employee in Cheshire who says a colleague 20 years older than her called her a racial slur word and asked to show her his penis, and said he wanted to make a "black and white" baby with her.

Nowhere does the BBC article say that the 17-year-old employee was black.  Even if that is a 'reasonable' assumption, it is not stated.  The only hint we have is that the man called her a racial slur.  However, it could have been a 37-year-old black man calling the 17-year-old white woman a "cracker", for all we know.

We have to be careful to not add our own interpretation to the cited articles, and state them as facts. If that information is available elsewhere, then that source needs to be identified.

This is what I changed the WP article to:

In 2023, the BBC conducted an investigation, and reported that more than 100 current and recent UK workers at outlets of the fast-food chain allege there is a continuing toxic culture of sexual assault, harassment, racism and bullying. [247]
