Linkspam in the External Links section[edit]

I think that the list of links to specific academic programs at the bottom of this article should be deleted, or at least severely pruned. This smacks of astroturf! Anyone have a strong opinion on this?Jtmorgan (talk) 17:24, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Buzzwords[edit]

I am reorganizing some of the recent changes to this article. Listing out things found in a google search does not make the article any easier to understand. Some of these topics may be best handled by a disambiguation page anyhow.

Also, I'm removing some traditional HCI buzzwords like "user-friendly." In general, a lot of HCI seems to be creeping in here. I'm not even sure if we should keep the links to ergonomy and all that traditional pre-HCI stuff. --Andicat 22:58, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To anonymous editor: this is in response to your edit summary. please use the discussion page to discuss page content. The nasa definition is just one project... there is a whole research movement that is unrelated to the NASA project that spans several institutions called "human-centered computing." Dear "Main Editor" of Human-centered computing

for me, the Human-centered computing is rather a sc. perspective than discipline. No unique theoretical framework exists in this approach. On the other hand every computing is for humans.

Of course, I understand that this term has been used as the names of laboratories, centers, programs or phd theses in concrete sc./tech. domain contexts. The same situation is exactly with the NASA project.

- I would like to ask you : What kind of computing evidently is not, more or less, Human-centered? (- I suggest to create the article Human-centered).

- Your personal opinion (lack of references) on: what is not of interest to Human-Computer Interactions or Man-Machine Interaction (why the reference to this term you canceled?), I do not share ( see also Google).

Could you explain more exactly what Human-centered computing means for you.

Hi, anonymous, I dont' know if I'm the "main editor" here but I care about the article so thanks for helping get it to the point where it has some content! I agree that one could certainly call human-centered computing a perspective on computing. It's also an interdisciplinary area of research that is becoming more and more reified in the form of academic centers, research consortia and programs, etc. There is a distinction to be made between human-centered approaches to computing/computer science and... well... computer-centered ones! :-) That's WHY these various organizations are differentiating themselves from the tradiational approaches.

As one editor of this page wrote, the distinctions between HCI/HCC and Info Sci are not always clear. In order to create an encyclopedia article that conveys what kind of work is being done in HCC programs, I've personally been trying to avoid including content about the traditional ways of dealing with the interactions between humans and computers, (i.e. ergonomics, etc). Mostly because I think those things are probably best dealt with in other articles anyhow.

I can certainly see where the NASA project could be included as a related link along with the others, it just seemed as though they used a narrow, quite contextualized definition of HCC and shouldn't be used in the body of the article as a main definition, so I moved it.

I disagree that the article is poorly-written. I think there are some editors whohave been doing a marvelous job here. I think this article is best left a stub actually, and fairly abstract as this is a pretty new topic. It will grow. --Andicat 11:12, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Career Contend needs to be added[edit]

As a student when seeing this topic in Wikipedia, what I concern is the careers of human-centered computing. Since it is an interdisciplinary field just like Information Science, I think adding this careers part will be much clearer for those scholars who are interested in HCC. Moreover, some universities offer human-centered computing program， such as University of Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech College of Computing and University of Maryland Baltimore County, etc. Therefore, having a clear understanding of the career of human-centered computing is important and useful. I agree with you about the career section. Inside the career section we may define several career directions which may present a whole picture for people who are interested in human centered computing field. For example, there should be a user interface designer career direction with the definition, and we should make an inner link refers to the User interface. Also, we could add some figures and graphs to show the career changed during these years.

Well, the future direction is also linked with the career of certain field. As I can see, human-centered computing, which focuses on how to understand, design, and implement systems where human needs are challenging and essential, would cover huge area related to human activities. For example, health care is an important activity for human. Human-centered computing can assist well to design, develop and test IT applications and services to help healthcare professionals and patients with more concerns about human and healthcare machine. That will be a brand new career combined both healthcare and human-centered computing technology.

Hey, I notice that there already are several healthcare IT career existed in American healthcare system. For most of healthcare agencies in the US, technology development centers are established for people who devoted themselves to apply IT applications in healthcare system. However, many of them hire people whose career only concerning about normal system design and coding. They may have less experience on human-centered computing. So it is necessary to develop such a career concentrating both on HCC and healthcare. After searching some career pages of healthcare agencies, I found that the engineer for human-centered design has become a job position only in technology development center of UPMC. Whatever, that would be a good news for proving that the HCC combined with healthcare system design may become a great future direction for HCC.

Yes,I agree with your adding reference, links and figures idea. Adding New Sections to the HCC article[edit]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I am editing this page for a class project with two other editors, and we are planning on making the following changes to this article:

Adding an overview of the HCC topic as a whole in which we discuss the goals of HCC and the factors that form the core of HCC systems and design
Adding a subsection on HCM (Human Centered Multimedia) in which we discuss multimedia production, analysis, and interaction
Adding a subsection on HCS (Human Centered Systems) in which we discuss the dimensions and attributes of human centered systems and how they relate to HCC
Adding a subsection on HCC Topics in which we use a three dimensional space described by the NSF to categorize topics related to HCC
Adding a subsection on HCC Scope in which we discuss how HCC facilitates the design of effective computer systems
Adding a subsection on the NASA HCC Group's ongoing project

We will be making these changes over the next couple of days, if anyone has any objections to the changes, or sees room for improvements, we are more than open to discussion.
