Shish taouk

I just started an article on Montreal-style shish taouk, and I would like to know whether this dish is as well-known in the rest of Canada as it is in Montreal. Should I expect to see shish taouk joints in the food courts of major Toronto malls? -- Blanchardb -MeMyEarsMyMouth- timed 17:35, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Try to find evidence of this in Toronto publications first. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 19:36, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
You might be able to search the eye, Now, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun or Toronto Globe archives. All of these regularly cover food in Toronto. I think the likelihood is low. Although shawarma has been readily available in Toronto for decades, I don't know of any advertisement of any particular style. Shawarmas are generally advertised as exactly that. Scope includes Markham?

Hi team - I note that Markham, Ontario has a WikiProject Toronto banner - but should it? If the scope of this project is Toronto proper, it should not. On the other hand, if Markham should be included, the scope of this project ought to be amended. PKT(alk) 15:33, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

I don't think all articles related to Markham should be included, but I think that Markham, Ontario itself is OK for inclusion. As is Mississauga, Brampton, etc. as they are part of the Greater Toronto Area. But I am open to other opinions on this. –xenotalk 15:36, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
In another note, is Canada's Wonderland part of WikiProject Toronto, given that it is a major attraction within approximately ten kilometres from the city's boundary? If it is, then Vaughan should be part of this WikiProject. If not, then Markham should not be part of this WikiProject. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 03:32, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
I would say yes, and yes, Vaughan should be part of WikiProject Toronto per my comments above that the major cities in the GTA should be included (but not the sub-articles of those cities). –xenotalk 15:24, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Street Names

I've noticed that the chart of street names in the York, Upper Canada article is in need some corrections and references. Armed with my trusty Appendix C of Toronto: No Mean City, I'll be tackling this task.

Does anyone need help with things like renamed streets, street name origins, or referencing them? Talk me and let me know. The appendix has streets up to 1900, so most of downtown can be covered. AlexRussel (talk) 23:24, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Don Valley Village page

A few of the "landmarks" listed as being in Don Valley Village are actually outside the boundaries given (Sheppard-Finch; 404-Leslie): - Zion Methodist Church, which is on the north side of Finch Avenue (and therefore in Hillcrest Village) - Seneca College Newnham Campus, which is also located on the north side of Finch Avenue - North York General Hospital, which is south of Sheppard Avenue, and therefore in the Henry Farm neighborhood - Cummer Park Fitness Centre, which is considerably north of Finch (even north of the light-purple shaded area that is in Hillcrest Village) and on the west side of Leslie Street, which means it probably belongs in the Bayview Woods - Steeles neighborhood (and the wiki page for that neighborhood also includes this facility) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.59.184.226 (talk) 20:50, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Merging with WikiProject Canada template?

I have made it possible to add an article to the Canada and Toronto articles at once using {{WikiProject Canada |toronto=yes}}. It can be used along with other Canada projects, for example {{{{WikiProject Canada |toronto=yes |music=yes |nl=yes | class=start |importance=low}} for a band that moved from Newfoundland to Toronto. You can still use the existing {{WikiProject Toronto}} template if you want to use a unique importance rating or use the map= or photo= parameters, but in general it's useful to share the work between projects. --Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 03:10, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

This is no good, it adds a second importance rating for Toronto, meaning an article ends up in two different importance ratings, one based on WPCANADA standards, in a WPTORONTO category, and one for WPTORONTO. 76.66.192.73 (talk) 10:53, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

Straw poll

Hi, WikiProject Toronto. I'd like to do a straw poll to see if and how you would like to allow tagging of your articles using a merged template. The Canada template is kind of a top-level catchall template that allows all Canadian WikiProjects to be added to talk pages at once with a standardized setup.

If the option is allowed, it would let users add articles to both this project and WikiProject Canada using {{WikiProject Canada |Toronto=yes}}. This is also how articles from projects like Canada Sports and Canada Roads are done, so you would be able to add articles to multiple projects using something like {{WikiProject Canada |toronto=yes |music=yes}}.

The projects would share a class rating, but WPToronto would have it's own importance rating using |toronto-importance=. Optionally, it could be set to default to WPCanada's importance if there is no Toronto importance and put the article into the additional category Category:Toronto articles with inherited importance. It would also show the Toronto portal on the template, though we're still looking into exactly how that would look.

My questions to you are:

  1. Do you want to allow users the option of tagging WPToronto articles using the WPCanada template?
  2. If it is allowed, would you want it to default to the WPCanada importance rating when there is no Toronto importance rating (assuming that you can track which articles have inherited importance)?

Thanks for your input! --Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 16:03, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

  • Comment The default WPCANADA importance rating will rate almost every city article as "low importance", which is useless in categorizing the importance of city articles. 76.66.192.73 (talk) 04:50, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
  • For the record, the current setup allows, but does not require, Toronto articles to be tagged jointly with WPCANADA, but always uses separate importance scales for the two projects. --Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 17:53, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 35,715 as of May 1. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Toronto/Unreferenced BLPs. Currently you have approximately 130 articles to be referenced. Other project lists can be found at User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates and User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects.

Your assistance in reviewing and referencing these articles is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please don't hestitate to ask either at WT:URBLP or at my talk page. Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 17:20, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Wrong date of demolition

I can't stand stubborn ignoramuses.

The author of this article has already been advised that the demolition year is inaccurate, but persists in at least this falsehood. The hotel was torn down in 1969, not 1960, and that can be verified at several URLs.

If the building was demolished in 1960, why do cars of much later vintage appear in photos of it on the Web?

Five or six subway stations connected to PATH ?

I have a question. For people who use the subway of Toronto. We can read, on the article about PATH, on the section called "Major facilities connected to PATH", that there are five subway stations comprised in PATH system. When we look at the list, on the "TTC subway stations" item, there are six stations (Dundas, Queen, King, Union, St. Andrew and Osgoode stations). So, is it six or five ? Thanks. DeansFA (talk) 20:01, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

The answer is five, since the sixth station, Osgoode Station, is connected only to the Four Seasons Centre, which is not connected to the rest of the PATH system, though the connection between Osgoode station and the Four Seasons Centre is technically part of the PATH system. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 02:02, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

New Fort York - Incorrect Caption: "German Prisoners of War"

The article correctly notes: "During World War I, the barracks housed German, Austro-Hungarian, and Turkish citizens, who were interned there as enemy aliens." There is a plaque on the site referencing this shameful internment as well. It is my understanding that no prisoners of war were at this location during WWI. Yet, beside the Wiki article is a photo with the caption "German Prisoners of War at Exhibition." This caption should be corrected. Indeed, it is also my understanding that this very photograph shows Ukrainian Canadians who originally came to Canada from territories in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, invited by the Canadian government to help build and populate the young country. (see also "Grim history lurks beneath the new Exhibition Place hotel," The Globe and Mail, 4 December 2009, by Ian Merringer) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.27.147.181 (talk) 14:33, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Do former municipalities belong to Ontario or Toronto?

I see that WikiProject Toronto provides an outline suggesting that the pages of former Metro Toronto municipalities (Scarborough, Etobicoke, North York, East York, and York) should be named as "City of municipality, Toronto". However, when checking the history of the Scarborough, Ontario page, apparently someone tried to move it to Scarborough, Toronto but it was reverted back, citing the guidelines of WikiProject Canada as reason. So which do we follow? What is the consensus at the moment about the titles of former municipalities? Peronally, I like the "City of municipality, Toronto" format as it can also be used for the Toronto (former) page to show that it is a distinct part of Toronto, rather than Ontario where doing so would seem like former Toronto is comparable with the current city of Toronto. Hope that made sense... EelamStyleZ (talk) 17:39, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Toronto's situation is somewhat unique in that a majority of the area of the city was once occupied by individual villages, and these villages have had the space between them filled with the blob of suburbia. Many of these places, up until 1967, were unique villages of Ontario. If we change these to placename, Toronto, then we set up the need to do that across the province for all single tier municipalities. Dundas, Hamilton, Lindsay, Kawartha Lakes, Carleton, Ottawa, St. Thomas, Chatham–Kent, etc... - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 18:21, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
  • I've never seen anyone call it suchlike "Scarborough, Toronto" or "Etobicoke, Toronto". That's very peculiar. If disambiguation is needed, then I think the , Ontario makes more sense. I suppose "Scarborough (Toronto, Ontario)" might be a good middle ground for compromise, but I still prefer Scarborough, Ontario. –xenotalk 18:24, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
    • Let us use a very ambiguous example: York. There are many places called York in the world. Even Ontario has more than one settlement called York. Instead of York, Ontario, the article should be renamed "York (Toronto, Ontario) or York (Toronto municipality, 1834-1998)," given that Toronto before 1834 was called York, Upper Canada. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 19:38, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
      • Either of those suggestion is better than "York, Toronto". –xenotalk 19:43, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the suggestions. But what's with the "(Toronto, Ontario)" rather than just "(Toronto)". I'm sure we agree that Toronto wouldn't need an "Ontario" specifier, just like any article that already has "(Toronto)" in it's name. Nonetheless, I also agree that terms like "Scarborough, Toronto" or "Etobicoke, Toronto" have never been used (or at least I haven't heard of them before), but it was just a doubt I had since the project page suggest a naming convention for former municipalities "as their former official full names but recognized as part of Toronto (their current status), i.e. Borough of East York, Toronto, City of North York, Toronto, etc.". But I have no problem with the current page names (i.e. Scarborough, Ontario or Etobicoke). EelamStyleZ (talk) 01:23, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Toronto articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Toronto articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Wards not Ridings

While editing the Rob Ford article I noticed that the Ward Two link was the link for Etobicoke North which actually has Ward 1 and 2, as well as nothing about munincipal elections. Should we start creating articles for wards? They have one here Ward 2, St. Louis City.205.189.194.208 (talk) 21:26, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Nope, since they often overlap with the existing neighbourhood article and the politics of Toronto is not the same as the one in St. Louis. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 02:39, 1 September 2010 (UTC)
Hmmmm,
For example, St. Paul's (electoral district), doesn't seem to be in any of the neighbourhoods here Downtown Toronto.

Further, there seems to be varying maps of wards by offices here, here, here, and here.

So what do we do?

Put, say municiple election results in, say, Ward 21 and Ward 22 in the federal riding article (St. Paul's (electoral district)) or provincial; or do we make seperate articles on such wards? And what of pre-1998 wards?205.189.194.208 (talk)
The wards sometimes match neighbourhoods, but just as often do not. However, there is no sense creating stub articles on each ward. Given that every ward constitutes two wards, I would add a section at the end of the riding articles about the constituent wards. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 16:19, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Roads in Toronto

There was recently an attempt to get rid of articles on roads like Bloor Street and Bathurst Street, and a debate has also broken out as to what those articles should include. Luminato

In full disclosure, this is a note from a Luminato staff member, in reference to the below comment posted in 2009, as well as to edits required to the current Luminato Wikipedia entry. To the best of my knowledge, the original entry was not created by a Luminato staff member; Luminato, the organization, would prefer if some of the staff directory/advisory committee information was removed.

Luminato, would like to see a note about each year's Festival maintained in the entry, as well as an inclusion of the following year's Festival dates. Currently, an entry about the 2011 Festival (June 10-19, 2011) is missing, as are the 2012 Festival dates: June 8-17, 2012. Additionally, the Luminato staff listings that likely should remain in the entry involve Janice Price (Luminato's CEO) and Chris Lorway (Luminato's former Artistic Director). Transit Task Force?

Would anyone be interested in starting a Toronto transit task force? By separating article into smaller task forces with those who are interested in certain Toronto related projects I believe we can improve many more articles in a more efficient manner. Tarret talk 19:12, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

WP Toronto in the Signpost

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Toronto for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. -Mabeenot (talk) 01:51, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

WikiWomen's History Month

Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:Toronto will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in Toronto's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. These events can take place off wiki, like edit-a-thons, or on wiki, such as themes and translations. Please visit the page here: WikiWomen's History Month. Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to seeing events take place! SarahStierch (talk) 21:25, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

Scope and the suburbs

I looked at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Toronto#Scope_includes_Markham.3F - It seems odd to include the cities themselves, but not their contents. Usually metro-area projects include the things associated with the suburbs too. For instance it's common for major corporations and groups of people to move outside of the core/main city and into the suburbs, but they are still heavily associated with the core city. Articles about places and things about suburbs generally need the attention from the same pool editors who edit articles about places and things in the city limits. Because Toronto is not immensely large, population wise (2,503,281), like New York City is (8 million) and all of its suburbs are in the same territory, the Toronto project should also focus upon not only the municipalities, but also the things within. To compare, the main USA projects (except for New York City and Washington DC) cover the suburbs and everything inside. WhisperToMe (talk) 01:01, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

That can be done. An alternative is to create WikiProject 905. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 03:16, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
Another way is to expand the scope of the existing project. For Wikipedia:WikiProject Houston we did not even have to change the name of the project. We just agreed "let's cover the whole metro area." In the minds of the general public they think of the suburbs as being a part of "Houston" anyway. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:30, 20 February 2012 (UTC)

Design Exchange museum - changed focus & exhibition strategy

Good morning, In full disclosure, I am an employee of the Design Exchange museum in Toronto, ON, Canada. We've noted that the Wikipedia page entry for the museum was nominated for deletion in August 2012 and we're glad that's not the case - very glad. In fact, the museum has embarked on a new plan and focus as a design museum, which brings exciting, groundbreaking exhibitions and shows from around the world and Canada.

The new positioning statement for the museum is below. We understand and respect that the organization itself does not adjust or edit the Design Museum's Wikipedia entry; should there ever be an opportunity by the Commons / Wiki Editors to update the Design Museum's entry here, this would be much appreicated - as it reflects the museum's new focus.

"As of March, 2012 the Design Exchange has taken a revitalized strategic direction and refined mandate - to promote the relevancy and experience of design to as large a number of people as possible, the DX will now be exclusively a Design Museum. Covering off the various design disciplines including fashion, architecture, interior and industrial design, digital design and more, exhibitions and programming will explore designers, products, projects or themes that have broad public appeal and reflect popular contemporary culture. Newly appointed President, Shauna Levy, leads this new direction offering renowned traveling exhibits from prestigious cultural institutions across the globe, a new city-wide cultural component, a greater focus on educational experiences for the public, including youth and adults, and a rollout of programming that will extend across the country."

The banner is now a redirect. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:14, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Hello there we have been talking about this at Template talk:WikiProject Canada#Removal of sub project templates. We seem to have a bit of a problem. The original Toronto template should not have been deleted until the conversion was done. You will see at Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada/Assessment#Use of WikiProject Canada banner that not all of the sub templates and there corresponding pages have been converted yet. Not sure how the original TO template got deleted without taking into account it would leave a red template link (I would guess this was a small oversight that now leaves the project minus 6000+ pages). We should reinstate the old template ASAP so the projects gets its pages back and assessments are not lost (hope it not to late). The deletion of the template would/should only take place after an appropriate substitution is found and implemented - we should never blank out a projects tracking system without a new one in its place. Would also like to point out that the relevant projects were never notified of the deletion request, thus the projects was not able to voice its concerns about this happening. Moxy (talk) 00:41, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Old banner reinstated/restored with history intact. --Bsadowski1 00:53, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
Done[3] Wow very nice - Thank you for this fast action Bsadowski1. I believe we have had many pages were the old template has been replaced - anyone know if the assessments were carried over or should we be doing a mass revert of those edits to get back assessments? As projects assessments is more important then the right banner. Moxy (talk) 00:59, 30 November 2010 (UTC)
A while back I found some historical figures that had a Toronto template and no Canada template. For each of them I replaced the Toronto one with the Canada one and copied Toronto's assessment when it existed. If someone were to do a mass replacement of this template with the Canada template, they would have to make sure to do the same. It shouldn't be too hard to program: replace {{WikiProject Toronto|class=X |importance=Y}} with {{WikiProject Canada|class=X |toronto=yes |toronto-importance=Y}}. —Arctic Gnome (talkcontribs) 00:32, 4 December 2010 (UTC)

Referring to Toronto subway lines

Some editors are replacing Toronto subway lines anmes with their numbers in the text of various articles. there have been two proposals to rename the subway line articles; both were rejected. See Talk:Yonge–University–Spadina line.

The TTC is using both the line number and the line name on their Subway/RT page. TTC information makes it clear that they are adding numbers to the names, not phasing out the names. At the end of this video, Chris Uphold of the TTC says this unambiguously. And this news release says: "Subway lines are not being renamed; rather, applying line numbers and colours already in use to existing line names...."

Replacing the descriptive name with the undescriptive number does not improve the clarity of the article. I am inviting other editors to dsicuss this to try to stop the edit war. I propose to add the following to the project page:

To improve clarity of the information for readers, TTC subway lines should be identifed by their descriptive names (e.g., Yonge-University-Spadina; Bloor-Danforth) or by their numbers and names (e.g., Line 1, Yonge-University-Spadina; Line 2, Bloor-Danforth), but not by their numbers alone.

Comments? Ground Zero | t 19:02, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

  • Perhaps the time has come to revisit the subject of renaming the line articles to include the number. This is now in widespread use and, in my opinion, we should use what the TTC has implemented. I resisted this when it was first brought up, since there was only minimal evidence of using numbers on a trial basis. Secondarywaltz (talk) 15:00, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
    • I don't object to including the numbers. The problem I have is with the editors who want to replace the descriptive names with the uninformative numbers. Ground Zero | t 15:41, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
      • The only way to refer to each rapid transit line would then be to link, without piping, directly to the article tile. This would remove any doubt. Thus 1 Yonge–University–Spadina (or similar) would always be used, just as at http://www.ttc.ca/Subway/Yonge_University_Spadina.jsp the TTC now does. Secondarywaltz (talk) 16:11, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
        • But by WP:COMMONNAME, Wikipedia articles should be named by what people are going to search for, rather than by an organization's official preference. Are people expecting to find the article at 1 Yonge–University–Spadina? Ground Zero | t 16:56, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
        • I said "or similar". This is a discussion? Secondarywaltz (talk) 20:55, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
          • I feel strongly that under WP:COMMONNAME, the article title should just be the line's name. Wikilinks and article text can clarify the number. Radagast (talk) 18:30, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
            • As I said above, when it was suggested before, I resisted the inclusion of the number. But, since those extended names are so clumsy, the common name is fast becoming the number. It has suprised me in how quickly people have adapted. Are you aware that TTC announcements now normally only use the line number? Secondarywaltz (talk) 20:55, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
              • Perhaps we can move them to the line numbers, since the public is transitioning to line numbers very quickly. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 02:40, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
                • Wikipedia readers are? Really? I find that unlikely. Our concern here isn't subway riders (there's limited access to Wikipedia while riding the subway anyway), but Wikipedia's international audience. I still think that "Bloor-Danforth" provides a lot more meaning than "Line 2" to a Wikipedia reader. Ground Zero | t 09:32, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Hello. I would first like to point out that I am not from, nor do I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, however I do live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Anyway, as I was recently browsing, I came across a page (as seen in the link in the title above) that is in need of updates but which has been labeled within the scope of WikiProject Toronto. According to the page's edit history, it was only created as of this year. Given the fact that Scotiabank Theatre is a brand within Cineplex Entertainment, I would think it would be wise to consult the adminstrating editors of that company's page regarding this matter, but in terms of bringing it to your attention, I felt that I should inform you that this Scotiabank Theatre page is presented as though it were exclusive, when in actuality, it stands as merely one of eight locations across the country under the Scotiabank Theatre brand. Therefore, I feel it is advisable to either rename the page Scotiabank Theatre Toronto to more aptly describe the location while maintaining the page's exclusive nature, or pass off the page to the administrating editors of the Cineplex Entertainment page, or work in consultation with said editors to ensure that the page is revamped to incorporate information regarding the other seven Scotiabank Theatre locations in Canada (namely Vancouver, Edmonton, Chinook, Saskatoon, Montreal, Halifax and St. John's). Thank you.  Snake Chess5 06:54, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

That should be done, once we get a consensus. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 01:36, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
Makes sense to me, but are the other theatres sharing the name notable themselves in any way? Given that the existing article is only stub-tier, it may be better to simply expand it out to cover the other locations as well instead of moving it to Scotiabank Theatre Toronto. // coldacid (talk|contrib) 02:58, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Controversial merger proposal

Per WP:PM, I am notifying the talk page of this appropriate Wikiproject to get knowledgeable people to comment on it. It has been proposed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Burano (building) that McLaughlin Motor Car Showroom be merged into Burano (building) (assuming the latter article is kept). I think that the content in the McLaughlin Motor Car Showroom article can easily be explained in the context of Burano (building), and the Burano (building) article is of a reasonable size that the merging of McLaughlin Motor Car Showroom will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:58, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Johnny Au I think that the code on Template:WikiProject Toronto should be replaced with

{{WikiProject Canada

Article about York Entrepreneurship Development Institut

Hello dear colleagues! I am new to creating articles from scratch. Although earlier I repeatedly anonymously improved already existing articles. I noticed that there are almost no articles about Canadian and especially Toronto based business accelerators and wrote one. Could you help me with its improvement and review? And maybe French translation...

Sorry if this is not the right place for such requests.

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:25, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Edit request

There is a edit request relevant to this WikiProject at Template talk:WikiProject Toronto.BrandonXLF (talk) 06:33, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

@BrandonXLF: Hi - I've marked this edit request {{notdone}} so as to wait a couple of days to see if there are any other views on the issue. As the Toronto transit task force looks inactive - are you intending to work in that area? Regards --Goldsztajn (talk) 10:59, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
Goldsztajn, no I am not (at the moment at least), but the parameters are already present for the most part, so might as well document them. I've reopened the edit request.BrandonXLF (talk)

Metro Toronto borough mayors

In 1967, Metropolitan Toronto was reorganized and boroughs were created by merging various townships. As a result reeves were replaced with mayors. Most borough mayors have articles on Wikipedia but several are missing. I'm wondering if there's any interest in creating them?:

Etobicoke
1967–1972 Edward A. Horton
North York
1967–1969 James Service
1970-1972 Basil Hall
Scarborough
1970-1972 Robert White
York
1967-1969 Jack Mould

SARS

I noticed at Talk:Timeline of the SARS outbreak and talk:Severe acute respiratory syndrome, it is rated as "low-importance" for T.O.; is that correct? The current coverage for 2019-nCoV in government and media seems to indicate that it's rather more important to the history of Toronto than just low -- 67.70.33.184 (talk) 06:18, 26 January 2020 (UTC)

Pre-1967 suburban mayors and reeves

We now have articles for every suburban mayor (ie Scarborough, North York, East York, York, and Etobicoke) from the 1967 amalgamation/reorganization of Metro to the final amalgamation of 1997. I'm wondering which, if any, pre-1967 reeves or mayors merit an article (see List of reeves of the former townships and villages in Toronto and also List of reeves and mayors of East York, List of reeves and mayors of Scarborough, Ontario. List of reeves and mayors of Etobicoke, North_York#Governance, and York,_Toronto#Politics ). Before January 1, 1967 there was not only the townships of Etobicoke, York, North York, East York, and Scarborough but also the towns of New Toronto, Mimico, Weston and Leaside; the villages of Long Branch, Swansea and Forest Hill. I wrote an article on North York reeve Norman Goodhead since he was twice a candidate for Metro Chairman and there was a lot of information on him. Oliver Crockford of Scarborough also appears to be notable since he was the force behind the Golden Mile and Chris Tonks of York is notable because he was the focus of a major corruption scandal that made national news - and also remained in politics into the 1970s. This page on the reeves of mayors of Etobicoke[4] has a little blurb on each reeve, William J. Gardhouse later became MPP for York West so he might be notable.

If many or most of these reeves and mayors are not notable in their own right I'm wondering if we can build up List of reeves of the former townships and villages in Toronto and the related pages about the townships so that there is at least a few sentences on each reeve or mayor on the page? Index created

Hello, I edit many Ontario-related articles and am a member of WikiProject Indices. I was working on the Index of Ontario-related articles and felt that with the sheer number of Toronto-related articles on Wikipedia, it was justified as a scope for its own dedicated index, which I have created at Index of Toronto-related articles. I welcome any comments or contributions, as despite my best efforts I doubt I will be able to find and add all of the hundreds of Toronto-related articles on here. I hope you may find it useful. I've certainly been enjoying the process of finding and reading the wide variety of articles about the city. Julius177 (talk) 19:14, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

The Great Hall - Toronto ( Heritage Site)

Hi, Full disclosure: i work at The Great Hall, it's one of the main historic city landmarks in Toronto, although its 130 years old landmark and one of the main pillars on queen west since 1889, it is still not part of the wikipedia resource. I would be happy to provide any material needed, articles, news, updates, historical background etc.

Thank you.

Oliver & Bonacini Restaurants

Hello. Full disclosure: I work for Oliver & Bonacini Restaurants in their marketing department. We would like to request an article for creation about the Toronto-based company and its founders, Peter Oliver and MasterChef Canada judge Michael Bonacini. Currently, Michael Bonacini is the only MasterChef Canada judge without his own Wikipedia page.

We would be happy to provide a wide variety of sources (newspaper articles, magazine features, etc.) to the writer. A key player in Toronto's food and beverage culture, O&B owns and operates 12 restaurants in Ontario as well as a handful of event spaces, including Arcadian Court and The Carlu.

Thank you!— Preceding unsigned comment added by Rebeccaspence (talkcontribs)
