Escape from New York[edit]

I've put a lot of work into this article and think that it may be ready for GA status and would like others to take a look at it and offer any suggestions for improvement. Thanks for any help you can offer. --J.D. 18:26, 2 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well done, it's an interesting article. These are some things I noticed, but the main thing that will hold you back is the need for more citations throughout. *The sentence starting "Set in the near future of a United States..." is a little unwieldy, I find it quite hard to follow.

  • Infobox

**Is it Escape From New York or John Carpenter's Escape from New York? Pick one.

    • The use of flagicons in infoboxes has been much discussed lately. It might be worth looking for the discussions on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Films, but I think the consensus is heading towards not using them.

*Production - use of the word "however" in 1st paragraph possibly redundant.

  • Casting

**I would move the picture to the right so that the text starts on the left. **Avco-Embassy Pictures: who are they exactly, in relation to the film? Did they produce it, or just distribute it? Could do with clarification.

    • seems a bit unnecessary to put "director/co-writer " before Carpenter's name as he has already been mentioned, in the previous paragraph you just call him "Carpenter".
    • You need a citation for the studio wanting Bronson or Jones, and for Kurt Russell trying to overcome a lightweight image.

**You need a citation for the bit about Pleasance coming up with an explanation for the accent.

  • Pre-production/Principal Photography

**"he figured" in the first line is too informal... later on "he junked it" is also too informal

    • Citations needed throughout - eg. no one wanting to hire Carpenter (there are more... every statement that can be challenged needs a citation. Because you've used a book, it's hard to tell sometimes which bits are backed up by that, so make sure you make it clear.)

**"Smash success of Halloween" doesn't sound too neutral, just "success" would be better. **"many sources write..." which sources? You only quote imdb, which isn't looked on too kindly in GA nominations. The only other source you mention is Carpenter himself, so why have you used the imdb figure over his claim? If you have better sources for the $7 million, use them.

    • You use a lot of direct quotes, maybe try to summarise what people are saying a bit more.
    • Need more citations for the paragraph about special effects.
  • Novelization
    • 1st sentence could maybe be reworded, it sounds a bit as if you've alrady introduced the book. Maybe something like "In 19xx Mike McQuay wrote a movie tie-in novel..."
    • Whole paragraph needs sources.

**You say it's "long since out of print".... since when exactly?

    • I would consider moving the novelization section to the bottom of the article as it's kind of an extra, all the other bits are about the film itself.
  • Reaction
    • I would put the title in full rather than as Escape - sounds a bit informal

**DVD releases needs its own section, or to be included in a general "release" section which details theatrical release as well. It's not part of the reaction.

    • "...but only on one disc" - sounds a bit disappointed, I would just put "...on one disc
  • External links

**I would lose the bottom two links.

  • Pictures
    • The movie poster needs to have a source added to the image summary. Also could do with having it's fair use rationale expanded/ See WP:FURG.
    • All the pictures need sources, even if you've uploaded them yourself - you need to state that. The screenshot of Kurt Russell may be stretching fair use a bit, since it is just there to show what he looks like. You might get away with it at Good Article Nomination.

I would also suggest looking at Google Scholar and Google Books for additional resources. I would also suggest trimming down the Plot section (and creating fuller paragraphs). Also, I'm not sure how important it is to list all the information about the soundtrack from the film. It doesn't really improve an understanding of the film. Perhaps important bits could be merged into the Production section? Also, I think that there could be more critical reaction written about the film, something similar to the length found at Road to Perdition#Reception.
