Projects delivered

Strategic Aim 1 - Knowledge Equity

Norwegianisation is one of the articles translated (from Norwegian Bokmal to English) as part of the Translation Studies MSC Wikipedia project this semester.

Mie Yamashita (1901–1986), better known by her stage name Sayuri Yōko was a Japanese theatre company president and actress. She was active as a stage, radio and film actress before and during the war. After the war, she found a children's theatre company and devoted her life to her company. She was called 'a living witness to children's theatre after the war'. One of the articles translated as part of the Translation Studies MSc this last semester

• Develop partnerships that increase access to underrepresented cultural heritage
• Support the development of minority and indigenous language Wikipedias
• Encourage new and existing partners to help tackle the gender gap on Wikimedia
• Identify other areas of inequality and bias and create partnerships to help address these
• Engage with volunteers and partners across the UK, widening the charity’s geographic reach

University of Edinburgh Library

Our Wikimedia intern Joshua Jackson spent much of June learning more about the Wikimedia projects and exploring how other organisations have engaged with them. We created a survey for people working with Wikimedia at GLAMS (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) which to date has had 17 responses. Josh will be in touch with respondents throughout July to set up interviews to further discuss how cultural heritage organisations can engage with Wikimedia. We also ran our second Wikimedia Community of Interest meeting, this time focussing on Wikipedia and the 1Lib1Ref campaign. The meeting was attended by 12 people, all of whom added at least one citation to Wikipedia! The next WCOI meeting is in early July and will focus on Wikisource.

Boris and Joe, reliability, love, and money

• Wikipedia Signpost/2021-06-27/In the media - "A diplomatic exchange of gifts involving a photo on Commons (right) was thoroughly dissected by The Washington Post, The Independent, The Times and many other newspapers. US President Joe Biden gave UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson a $6,000 bicycle. Boris gave Joe a photograph of a mural in Edinburgh of Frederick Douglass taken from Commons. It's wonderful that Johnson recognized the importance of US–UK shared history—including Douglass's life and general race relations in both countries. It's even better that Johnson gave a freely licensed photo available on Commons. Why waste the taxpayers' money when such a thoughtful gift is libre as well as gratis. The photographer Melissa Highton gives due credit to the muralist Ross Blair (AKA TrenchOne). Highton is a dual US–UK national with roots in Maryland and Scotland. She says that the "incident gained a wee bit of media coverage" and that it "just goes to show that serendipitous things happen when you share openly.""

Women in Red workshop

• One new Women in Red workshops was held on 26 May 2021.
  • 7 new articles were created at the 26 May event inc. Emily Swankie (17 December 1915 - 24 February 2008) who was a British activist and campaigner who participated in the National Hunger March from Glasgow to London to protest against poverty and unemployment in the United Kingdom.

• One new Women in Red workshops was held on 23 June 2021.
  • 3 new articles were created at the 23 June event inc. Iona McGregor (1929 – 14 March 2021) who was a Scottish author and teacher best known for her written work and her contributions to gay rights activism, especially from the 1970's onwards. She worked with the Scottish Minorities Group in Glasgow (and later in Edinburgh) to help create safe social spaces for women, and to develop a befriending service for people who were members of the LGBT community. In later life, she was an active member of Edinburgh U3A. She was a full time teacher, and so had to keep her activism work and personal life a secret in order to avoid losing her job. She was a member of the Scottish PEN and wrote novels and non-fiction, especially about Scottish history.

Wikimedia student internships in Summer 2021

• Three Wikimedia student internships were interviewed and appointed in May 2021.
  • The Wikimedia ‘Open Collections - Wikisourceror’ intern, Erin Boyle, commenced work on 7th June 2021 - with a 12 week position aimed at documenting workflows for Wikisource and Wikimedia Commons and helping out Library and University Collections team understand very clearly the 'how and why' of opening up collections through the Wikimedia projects.
  • The Wikimedia ‘Open Edinburgh – Open Data and Knowledge Equity’ intern, Clea Strathmann, commenced work on 7th June - with a 12 week position aimed at supporting the University of Edinburgh's commitment to the teaching of data science and its commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • The Wikimedia internship in Library and University Collections, Joshua Jackson, commenced on 31st May 2021 - with a 12 week position aimed at learning and writing a high-level report on best practice from other Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums engaging with Wikimedia to open up their collections.
• These internships represent the first time that the Library and University Collections have opted to do a prolonged body of work exploring collaborating with the Wikimedia projects so the view is to have the internships (1) document workflows for using Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikisource (2) learn from best practice in GLAM institutions elsewhere and (3) write a detailed report for the library and university collections to engage in open practices as part of the strategy going forward.

Strategic Aim 2 - Digital Literacy

The Colonial history of Cologne is one of the articles translated this semester on the Translation Studies MSc.

• Support the education sector’s engagement with Wikimedia as a digital literacy tool
• Facilitate Wikimedia-based digital, data and information literacy projects with other partners

• Advocate for the inclusion of Wikimedia in curriculum, syllabus and course development

Progress

Wikimedia in the Curriculum

Scotland in the High Middle Ages is one of the articles translated (English to Chinese) as part of the Translation Studies MSc this last semester. The Scottish Renaissance was also added to Arabic Wikipedia by another student editor.

La Malinche is one of the articles translated this semester on the Translation Studies MSc. She was a Nahua woman from the Mexican Gulf Coast, who played a key role in the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, acting as an interpreter, advisor, and intermediary for the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés. She was one of 20 enslaved women given to the Spaniards by the Natives of Tabasco in 1519.

#SayHerName is a social movement that seeks to raise awareness for Black female victims of police brutality and anti-Black violence in the United States - one of the articles being translated this semester on the Translation Studies MSc

• Confirmed with Professor Norah Spears that the Reproductive Biomedicine BSc Wikipedia assignment will continue for its 6th year in September 2021.
• Confirmed with Michael Gallagher that a Wikipedia component will take place on the Digital Education MSc in January 2022.
• Three to four new case studies to add to the Wikimedia in Education - Booklet of Case Studies for a new digital edition to be relaunched in 2022.
• The Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment concluded on 14th May 2021 with students peer assessing each other's newly published translations. This semester students have been invited to consider how best to support global understanding of black and postcolonial history through their 1,500-2,000 word translation assignment. This assignment is being reviewed for Semester One in session 2021/2022 and offered on an 'opt-in' basis.

Podcast on Wikimedia in education

• A podcast series with the University's influential Teaching Matters blog has been recorded on the 24th of May. Topics discussed included: Wikipedia and History (1hr); Wikipedia and academia in the new normal(1hr); Wikipedia in 321 languages(1hr); Wikipedia, Medicine and Science Communication(30 mins); Wikipedia and the Gender Gap(30 mins). Professor Diana Paton, Translation Studies students, History Society students, Jason Evans, Lorna Campbell, Lucy Crompton-Reid, Prof Norah Spears, and Prof Linda Bauld all contributed. The next step is to work with the Teaching Matters team to polish and edit the podcast recordings to a shorter 15 min discussion output for each topic.

Conferences

• Presented a panel session at the University of Edinburgh's Learning and Teaching Conference 2021 on Wikipedia in the Classroom – Student-led activism promoting knowledge equity and SDG4 - Professor Diana Paton and History Society students (Scarlett Kiaras-Attari, Lucy Parfitt, Grace King, Sian Davies) have all agreed to take part and present on the project to improve coverage of Scotland, Slavery and Black History.
• Been approved for two sessions at the LILAC Information Literacy online conference in July 2021, FestivIL of LILAC.
• Submitting an abstract on Wikipedia in Translation based on the work conducted on the Translation Studies MSc for the December 2021 conference, Understanding Wikipedia’s Dark Matter: Translation and Multilingual Practice in the World’s Largest Online Encyclopedia.
• Attended the fifth annual Celtic Knot - Wikipedia Language Conference on 24-25 June 2021 with my student interns, Clea and Erin.

Wikipedia at the University of Edinburgh

• Met with Ravinder Panesar of the Student Induction team to discuss a 15 minute presentation the resident delivered during Welcome Week last Autumn, "How to improve representation online with Wikipedia". The upshot of the discussion was that although inculcating good digital research habits is a relevant and beneficial thing for students, the positioning of the presentation during Welcome Week was too soon fr the students to see the immediate relevancy. Therefore, student interns Clea and Erin will create a 3-5 minute video introducing the 'how and why' of engaging with Wikipedia at the university (can we cite it? No. Can we write it? Yes.) for wide dissemination on student and course programme Facebook groups when they are settled in and thinking of starting their first assignments.
• Responded to a query from Dr. Ben Fletcher-Watson at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, regarding holding a Wikipedia editing event on Rediscovering Feminisms at the University of Edinburgh for the Being Human Festival in November 2021. Applied in affirmative- further details being discussed.

Research data and Wikidata

• Liaised with Miles Glendinning and Kat Breen to resume the Tower Block Archive project (images of Scottish social housing to Wikimedia Commons and associated rich metadata to Wikidata). This will be a good example dataset for student interns, Clea and Erin, to work on. First meeting scheduled for 6th July 2021.
• Met with Dr. Zsusanna Vargas on 10 June 2021 to discuss a dataset she wishes to have added to Wikidata to help visualise the 700-900 books in the dataset and their place of publication. Zsusanna reached out to the resident on the basis of the Map of Accused Witches data project and wishes to do something similar. This should make for an interesting project for Open data and Knowledge Equity intern, Clea Strathmann.

Wikipedia Editing - a new Edinburgh Award

• The resident has submitted a new Edinburgh Award to accredit students for extended project work on Wikipedia as of October 2021 to March 2022. This would allow students to develop important information literacy, digital research, communication and collaborative skills ahead of the world of work and accredit them for undertaking 70-80 hours of Wikipedia work over an extended period. The first iteration is aimed to begin in October 2021 and has been negotiated in collaboration with Kirsty Stewart at the University of Edinburgh Career Service and in collaboration with student interns, Erin Boyle and Clea Strathmann.
