Nominating this at FP.--Lionratz (talk) 04:55, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Portal:Singapore[edit]

This is my first time editing a portal, but I hope to nominate it at FPOC. This portal includes:

  • 20 Selected Articles
  • 20 Selected Biographies
  • 20 Selected Pictures
  • 15 Selected Panorama
  • 10 Sets of 5 DYK lists

Any comments or feedback are greatly appreciated.Lionratz (talk) 13:30, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • I would respectfully disagree with you on some aspects. It is true that the Wikinews portal has very little updates and the quality is sometimes quite shoddy. However, unlike the Geography portal, this section is drawing directly from the "Singapore" category at Wikinews, and I think this category provides news that are quite relevant to this portal. Moreover, inclusion of this portal does not seem to be a problem for other similar portals (examples I can find includes: Australia, Japan, Brazil, Norway and many more). I am not opposed to removing this section per say. I just feel that if you have this feature at other portals, it will be kind of strange for viewers not to find something similar here. Perhaps you might want to start a proper discussion so that the Wikipedia community could decide on whether news from Wikinews are really "too unreliable to include in portals". If the community agrees with you, I would gladly remove it forever.--Lionratz (talk) 06:33, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I concur. What's with this blanket Wikinews hate? This is clearly where it shines. ResMar 20:30, 8 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Let's look at the items:
Wikinews interviews Spanish evolutionary biologist Francisco G. Gonzálvez - Barely has anything to do with Singapore, is about a Spanish scientist
ACTA rejected by European Parliament; protesters rejoice - Objectively has nothing to do with Singapore, is about Europe
Vanuatu sends lone Paralympian to London - Objectively has nothing to do with Singapore, is about Vanuatu
World leaders react to death of Osama bin Laden - from May 3, 2011
'Critical safety issue' with A380 engines - from December 3, 2010
It's not blanket hate, it's just that Wikinews doesn't work for portals. Sven Manguard Wha? 21:14, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, can we please stop arguing about Wikinews here? The proper procedure to do so is to start a RfC. Arguing here serves no purpose for anyone. Can someone instead give other constructive feedback on this portal (without the Wikinews thing)?--Lionratz (talk) 13:38, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sure:
  • Some of your 'Selected ______' items have pictures and some don't. I think it would be good to make sure that, at least within sections, you're consistent about that.
Standardized for selected biography, but I want to include image for Selected articles, just that 3 or the selected articles do not have free image. Any suggestions on how to solve that problem?--Lionratz (talk) 03:44, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • The "Associated Wikimedia" section looks light on items. It should have Wikivoyage for sure. Take a look at Portal:Massachusetts for the template that I'm using, which I think also improves the overall presentation of that section as well as provides the code for adding Wikivoyage.
Added more entries (including the wikivoyage one). I still kind of prefer this design, because the template you used does not link to any particular category or entry in other wikimedia projects, but just brings users to the search results.--Lionratz (talk) 03:44, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Any chance we could add in a map of the layout of Singapore itself? The flag and area map are nice, but a city map would also seem appropriate, considering that for the most part, Singapore is... well... a city.
Added a city map, though the arrangement might be an issue. Could do with with some help on that.--Lionratz (talk) 03:44, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Topics section breaks the color scheme. I don't think it should. I actually think though that you should change the template, not create a new one, as it seems odd that the template isn't in Singapore colors. --Lionratz (talk) 03:44, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you that it is strange, but changing the whole template would require consensus other the Singaporean editors as well. Might as well save the time and start another template. In the process of making.--Lionratz (talk) 03:44, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Update: completed the new topics section and added it to the portal.--Lionratz (talk) 03:07, 22 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for the review. Addressed the individual concerns above.--Lionratz (talk) 03:44, 21 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am not the most thorough of reviewers, but it looks ready for FPOC to me. Sven Manguard Wha? 00:32, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your review!--Lionratz (talk) 04:55, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
