OriginalIsaac Levitan (1860-1900) was a Russian painter who advanced the genre of the "mood landscape." Born in Augustów, he entered art school in Moscow at only 13. Among his teachers was Alexei Savrasov, whose students painted en plein air. This Golden Autuman dates from 1895. From 1897 he headed the landscape studio at the Imperial Academy of Arts. Levitan, suffering from heart disease, died in June 1900, aged only 39.
