Magic Johnson confusion[edit]

Thanks for the link about Magic's siblings. I added to the article because it is a direct quote from him and matches the number I got from another source, but I am still confused by the differences, even among nationally known publications. Here are some examples: http://espn.go.com/nba/player/bio/_/id/2334/magic-johnson his espn.com bio, says he is the 6th of 10 children. http://articles.latimes.com/2002/jun/05/sports/sp-magic05 article from the L.A. times, says he is the 4th of 9 children. http://www.biography.com/people/magic-johnson-9356150 says Magic had 9 brothers and sisters.

But I believe the answer to the confusion comes from this book: http://books.google.com/books?id=WY437HMnVx4C&pg=PA15&lpg=PA15&dq=Earvin+Johnson,+Sr.&source=bl&ots=ZMAxQrgbhD&sig=d5FIZdvCFVgLTfEeNLy38qXYhqk&hl=en&sa=X&ei=J6qfUdaVKoParAGr74G4DQ&ved=0CGEQ6AEwCTgK#v=onepage&q=Earvin%20Johnson%2C%20Sr.&f=false. Apparently there are step-children. I am going to add this reference, because it lists the names of the children and the family composition.[[D-free]] (talk) 18:15, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Magic Johnson[edit]

Thanks for helping with the siblings. I should have checked his autobiography first. Both books list the exact same children, so I agree they seem to be the best source regarding his siblings. I think there could be a little more information about how his parents and his older brothers, all of whom played basketball, helped to spark his interest in the game. I am going to research that, and maybe get to his MVP seasons and his first NBA game.[[D-free]] (talk) 22:07, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pending changes on Paul George[edit]

Noble effort to try pending changes, but should Paul George (basketball) be changed to semi-protected? It seems to still be highly edited, mostly unconstructively from unregistered users, and a lot of effort is spent reverting. WP:PCPP recommends "Pending changes protection should not be used on articles with a very high edit rate, even if they meet the aforementioned criteria. Instead semi-protection should be considered."—Bagumba (talk) 07:10, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I had been thinking about changing that. I've now applied semiprotection. Zagalejo^^^ 23:01, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Service Award[edit]

Hey..

I saw that you edited the Jim Chones article right after me, and quite honestly I came upon your user page by mistake when I meant to click on to the new revision of the article.

While I was there I looked up your stats just to see how long you've been around this crazy wiki world, and figured I'd give you the proper service award. I've done the same for other editors (especially those I work closely with).

I apologize if I overstepped my bounds. (talk) Vjmlhds 04:22, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Malone[edit]

Have the Kings officially announced that Mike Malone is their new head coach? I don't see anything on their site or NBA.com. ESPN lists it but I'm still not convinced. ESPN seem to be all over it but I'm just wondering why NBA.com have said anything. DaHuzyBru (talk) 04:14, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Seikaly[edit]

He absolutely did play with Panathinaikos. He was in their youth club for many years and then with their senior club until he could not play in the Greek League because of his citizenship. This is absolutely true. I don't know about the age 3 or 9, but Greek sources had stated age 3. If you don't want it on there due to sources then that is fine, but please know that it is 100% true.Bluesangrel (talk) 22:30, 6 June 2013 (UTC) I just did a quick search on Google and found this - [1] I don't know the exact rules because of the different languages. But if you use Google translate you should be able to read it to at least know it is true. If these are not valid sources that is fine, but I just wanted to you to know this information is not made up.Bluesangrel (talk) 22:35, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The reason Panathinaikos was not listed in his infobox as one of his teams was because he didn't play a regular season game with them. That's why I did not add it there. But he did play with them in the preseason in 1982, which was why it was listed in the article itself. I figured that was the correct way to do that. Since there seems to be conflicting sources about how old he was when he moved to Greece, I think it's good to keep it as you have it written now then. Just to say he moved to Greece as a child, without specifying what age. Since different papers are saying different things.Bluesangrel (talk) 22:47, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Notability for basketball players[edit]

I was wondering about this. On the guidelines for notability for basketball players it says that notability is for NBA players, guys drafted in the first two rounds of the NBA draft, for players that played in the ABA or that play in Australia's league. Then it says for guys that played in the Olympics. What is confusing to me is that for European league, it says guys that played in Euroleague, Spanish League, or Italian League, or other similar leagues.

I am not sure why Italian league gets precedence now over leagues like Eurocup, or Greek league, or VTB United league. Since, Eurocup is the second most important European league, and since VTB league is the most important regional league (and now is also the Russian national league starting next year). The VTB league is also ranked higher than the Italian league in the basketball league rankings of Europe.

While the Greek league is now considered the 2nd best national league in Europe, and is ranked that way. So I am not sure why the Italian league is listed there, and none of those other leagues? Surely, this needs to be reworded? Because Eurocup, VTB league, and Greek league are all considered higher ranked and/or more important than Italian league in recent years. I would think then since there is consensus that players from Italian league would have notability, then so should those other European leagues. Or am I wrong? if this is based on historical precedent, then at least the Greek league should also be listed then, as it is one of the 3 historic European leagues along with the leagues in Italy and Spain. So if this is based on historical precedent, then the league in Greece should be listed there also. What are your thoughts on this?Bluesangrel (talk) 23:01, 8 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Protect Kyle Hines?[edit]

There has been pretty consistent vandalism/addition of factual errors to Kyle Hines - could you protect it so only registered users can edit for awhile? It is always IPs doing it. Scottie Pippen article[edit]

Why do you keep trying to erase this information? Pippen has been accused of assaulting a man by punching him and kicking him in the face. The police are investigating. It is all over the news. Dav Pilkey[edit]

Thank you, Zagalejo. I appreciate your help. I did send an email to info-en@wikimedia.org. I also appreciate your comment regarding correct information. I feel this is a huge problem these days. People do not thoroughly check their sources and feel just because it is in print, it is true. I feel the paragraph is irrelevant because Cynthia Rylant did not influence my career. It's unfortunate nowadays, if one dates someone from the same profession, it is considered, "news". How ridiculous. If she had an impact on my career whether negative or positive, it should definitely be included. She is someone I dated and I dated many other people who have had much more of a significant impact on my life. I think mentioning her in the article, leads people to believe our relationship was a lot more serious.58.92.253.234 (talk) 11:08, 15 July 2013 (UTC)Dav Pilkey — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.92.253.234 (talk)

Page protection request[edit]

Any way I could get you to protect Brock Gillespie so that only registered users can edit? There is a lot of incorrect info that keeps getting added (like that he played in the NBA, was a McDonald's All-American, etc) and valid info is being deleted (a stint in Finland, his birthplace, etc.) by a sreies of IP users who I assume is the same person using different devices. I spent time researching and fixing it once and have correct the egregious stuff, but if you can protect it from IPs editing I think it would be good. I can fix the article but I'm not interested if an IP is just going to come behind and re-wreck it. He's basically a minor basketball figure so the volume of edits on his article are kind of ridiculous. Thanks Rikster2 (talk) 20:08, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I just noticed now, one of my friends told me about that FG% thing but I didn't bother to double check it Anyways, I got 2 questions regarding some quotes. I was watching the documentary film "Hardwood Heroes" in which Pippen is featured in and I heard some interesting quotes from his former team mates. My first question is should I add that in "Legacy" or "Player Profile"? and I don't really know what to put as reference for them, should I just make it like this:

Insert quote here bla bla bla - Steve Kerr, Hardwood Heroes(1998)

Also how is it possible to find who a certain photo is copywritten to? I found some photos of Pippen as a college player and as well as pictures from his NBA career to add to the page and as soon as I wanted to upload them I was asked to write down everything I knew from the photo, and seeing as how I just got it from a blog, I didn't know sh*t lol

Hey, I just added more info about the 1997 NBA finals on Scottie Pippen's page so I'd appreciate if you could review it and edit out all the mistakes in it. Also, do you know any sites that have photos which are free to use? Pippen's my favorite player all around and it's a damn shame that his page is so empty so I wanna add in a few things here and there to make it better, if what I did for the 1997 NBA finals is good I'll do the same for 96 and 98

Let me know, peace! My talk page

Mavs[edit]

What do you make of this? Both Ellington and Ellis are listed on their official roster. Now, I know the Mavs are poor at press releases (or general news for that matter) so I'm not sure how to handle this. Chrishmt0423 was wondering the same thing. DaHuzyBru (talk) 08:09, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Josh Akognon and Bernard James[edit]

Do you know about their status? Reports are saying that both have been waived by the Mavs to create cap room for Monta Ellis. Yet I have trouble finding an official report for that.—Chris!c/t 04:26, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what's going on. Reports are that Akognon has been claimed off waivers by Memphis, but there's no official confirmation of that. There was never a press release to say that Akognon had been waived in the first place. (Pretty much all the recent information about Akognon seems to come from Marc Stein.)
As for Bernard James, the latest reports are that he was waived, and then re-signed. [4] My guess is that Dallas was hoping to re-sign them both, which is why they never made any statement on the matter. But I'm not sure.
The most recent press release from the Mavs concerns the signing of Ricky Ledo: [5] Zagalejo^^^ 05:20, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What about this? This says both have been "lost" via waived. This, however, also says that Wayne Ellington has been signed (and I saw this on July 10 which had Ellington there from the start so it's hard to tell how reliable this is). DaHuzyBru (talk) 06:45, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. I don't know much about that page. I know the Free Agent Tracker page listed a lot of things before they were official. The link above says that Mike Miller is already on the Grizzlies, but I'm pretty sure the Grizzlies would have made an announcement about that. Zagalejo^^^ 02:44, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I totally agree with what you said. We should start including two flags for cases like Simmons or Lojeski. It would definately be more accurate. Bramos or Calathes don't speak hardly a word of Greek and spent their wholes lives in USA. They are listed as Greeks though. Begic is Bosnian, not Slovenian, and listed in Olympiacos roster as a Slovene. We can find probably 50 other such examples. It's not only just about naturalized Americans playing for European national teams, it's about all the cases of dual nationality, which you are not including.Bluesangrel (talk) 23:02, 3 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I know it is skimming the line, but what do you think needs to be changed in the wording on the Guy Williams article? I would like to have some real content in the article, not just a stats summary like so many of the basketball articles seem to be.Hoops gza (talk) 04:02, 29 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dudley Moore[edit]

Hi there, I see you recently did a revert and other "corrections" to my "Dudley Moore" contributions. As a native and sports fan it is most assuredly "Dudley" and in fact no coach would ever last in the Pittsburgh area that referred to himself as something that sounds like doodey.

I have seen the 2,000 reprints of the AP article written by an early version of Jayson Blair misspelling the man's name. I am curious what yearbook or media guide you have seen, since none are listed as references on the man's wikiarticle.

If you wish for me to add references I will be happy to, it will be the funniest article on wikipedia for sure, in his time, what sounds like "doodey" wasn't his name. Market St.⧏ ⧐ Diamond Way 11:59, 4 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Toure Murry[edit]

Is this official? Sportando seems to be a pretty reliable source, especially with european basketball news. The Knicks didn't release anything on their news site so I'm not sure. DaHuzyBru (talk) 13:09, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, thanks. Was thinking that too. DaHuzyBru (talk) 07:25, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sidney Green[edit]

I do not believe that it is undue weight to list his nickname at least somewhere in the article with the proper citation. Perhaps it could be moved to somewhere else within the article. By the way, it sounds like you have electronic access to that Boston Globe article, just wondering, how do you have access to that article? I have access to pretty good newspapers resources, but I had to microfilm that article.Hoops gza (talk) 17:59, 9 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info! I have a CPL card. Which link did you use for the Boston Globe? That paper comes in handy quite often.Hoops gza (talk) 01:10, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I still don't see that article showing up in a search of the article title through that feature.Hoops gza (talk) 01:21, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see now. It wasn't in the article title. Thanks for the help!Hoops gza (talk) 04:24, 10 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Miličic[edit]

The reason it's relevant (currently) is due to Rodman's antics in NK. Every newspaper, website, magazine is running "Crazy NBA player" "The craziest NBA team", etc. That's how I stumbled on the article (to find out more information after seeing him on such a list). I disagree mentioning it is the equivalent of "tabloid gossip". It has been widely reported in major news sources and books. I think a reasonable compromise might be to mention it in the article and where the source of the story came from (that it was an "player diary" and all other articles source that one report).

The reason I wanted to know more about the incident is because it seems so unlikely. It just wouldn't happen (it's not like his team is just going to hand him a wad of $50 bills in several suitcases every month is it? If it had happened you'd expect there to be financial irregularity inspections in the news at the same time too). So, when I didn't find the information I wanted, I did some digging and traced it back to that one article, thinking other people might visit the page looking for the same information I added the single sentence. Like I say, it's topical (sort of) because of other events.

I do agree that articles shouldn't be tabloid "shock stories", but pointing out where the rumour/anecdote/truth/untruth came from is (I think) useful information. Particularly as we've now narrowed it down to a single source which somewhat negates the validity of the thousands of hits you get if you type his name and add "bank".

I don't see it as vital information. If you insist on it not being there, so be it. I just thought that the edited version was more in line with your reason for removing it in the first place (specifically mentioning it was questionable and adding it was an anecdote attributed to one player).

Edit: BTW, you mention "I admitted people called it into question" - I was talking about you! :)

Can you please put the protection until the end of Eurobasket 2013 for page Serbia national basketball team? We again have the problem of deleting sources that say Serbia is not a successor state of pre-1992 Yugoslavia. In this case one unregistered user with just IP address makes me a problem. It is popular now as many fans during Eurobasket read and edit those pages, and Serbia is special because of history and Serb's mentality lets say hehe. Ibaka/France[edit]

The evidence is flimsy. I saw it in an old digital edition of SLAM mag' I was reading and added it. Upon seeing your comment I searched online for another reference (thinking something must be documented) and funnily enough the only source I could find was the same article: http://www.slamonline.com/online/blogs/the-links/2011/05/power-serge/

I asked him on twitter! Ha! I don't expect he'll reply. If not I'll remove the line. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bullblade (talkcontribs) 22:34, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps you should expand your nomination to include the subcats of Category:American criminals by ethnic or national origin? (I'd leave the mobsters chain intact due to the notable ethnic component of many "mobs", though.)

Interesting article activity[edit]

At Mark Sanford (basketball). A user has only edited that article, adds info without sources, undoes formatting, and most significantly has added a ton of misleading (and in some cases patently false) info. Any recourse here? Rikster2 (talk) 03:12, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I don't think stubbing it is a bad idea. Just spot checking, there are a lot of unverifiable pieces of info in there and some that is flat out false. For example, no such thing as being "ranked 22nd nationally by Parade All-America in the class of 1994" - there are about 40 Parade AAs every year so #22 would be on the team. Not sure what is going on with this article, but it has problems. Rikster2 (talk) 05:37, 16 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for correcting Tony Parker to TP. I dedicate to you a song by Tony Parker "Premier Love" from the TP album. It features also the beautiful vocals of Rickwel. Desmond Mason's page[edit]

Hi! I am working with Desmond Mason now to help spread the word about his art career now that he is no longer playing in the NBA. I read your notes on the edits made to my entries and appreciate the feedback. Can you tell me how we can add more detail and possibly images of his art now that that is his primary vocation?

Kirilenko[edit]

Unluckily, I haven't found any sources in the internet proving it. Some time ago I had a magazine about Russian/USSR national basketball team current and past roster. There was a lot of toughs about how it is and how it was formed from occupied nations. All I found in the internet is some kind book about Izhevsk people: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/izhevsk-books-llc/1022889954, which have chapter about Andrei Kirilenko. Too bad it's impossible to read it due to unknown reason... Hmm... Let's keep it like that for now. I'll try to find that magazine or any other sources in the future.
