Re: Reminder to chrisjnelson[edit]

Reminding someone who has been here for three years and has been doing rosters and player articles for just as long to not forget to update them is like telling a CEO of a company how to do his or her job. A reminder is nice, but believe me, Chris knows what he's doing. Acting like you're trying to show him the ropes when it should really be the other way around is awkward; saying "I have no idea why this page wasn't updated" borders on a violation of WP:CIVIL. Pats1 T/C 03:06, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's just a friendly reminder. It was probably just a small mistake on his part, becuase 8 players were released from the roster at the same time. But regardless, it still needs to be updated. Rosterguy (talk) 03:08, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A friendly reminder would have been "Hey Chris, I notice you like to update player articles a lot. I noticed you missed one." A friendly reminder, at least from an inexperienced editor to an experienced one, isn't "Make sure you update player article whenever someone is released." Sorry, just trying to help... Rosterguy (talk) 03:13, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a mistake, I either chose not to edit it or I was busy. It's not my job to do the player pages. I do them when I can and when I feel like it. Instead of telling someone else they didn't update a page, you can spend that time updating it yourself.►Chris NelsonHolla! 03:28, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Plummer[edit]

As we've already discussed, Chris and I have been here for years and have been doing rosters for almost as long. It would be naive to think that the issue of Plummer has never come up, no? Of course it has, but Chris and I have fairly refined methods of keeping these rosters accurate and updated. And as such, I've had to give a monologue to many inexperienced editors on what are good sources to use for rosters, and what aren't. I'll spare you that, but the gist of this is that many team websites aren't the best sources for rosters (maybe for numbers and press releases for transactions, but that's about it); websites like ESPN are even worse. In fact, I'd say our Wikipedia rosters are pretty damn accurate, with the other really good ones being these, which not coincidentally use the same methods of keeping them updated and accurate as we do. In Plummer's case, he was placed on the Reserve/Did Not Report list by the Buccaneers before the 2007 season. Unlike Reserve/Injured, this list does not expire at the end of the season and requires the team to reinstate the player. From my reading on Plummer, the Bucs will do this once his contract expires after next year, IIRC. But the fact of the matter is, Plummer is still a member of the Buccaneers, just like Anthony Arline, who was placed on the Chargers' R/DNR before the 2007 season, is still a member of the Chargers. This can be verified using the NFLPA's Active player salary search (you must first create a login), which is one of the few official sources out there. The other is Pro Football Weekly's transaction wire, which is actually the only *official* one on the internet; NFL.com is not, and team websites do a sloppy job themselves. Believe me on this too, I've been doing this for years and know what I'm talking about. Plummer will be removed from the Bucs' roster whenever he is removed from the NFLPA database (which is a slimmed-down version of their official contract database used by agents), which will likely come when he is either placed on Reserve/Retired or is reinstated from Reserve/Did Not Report and released. Keep in mind the later was true for "retired" players like Cedric Houston and Marion Dukes, who were all but gone to the Jets and Dolphins websites, but a year-plus later, suddenly surfaced on ProFW's transactions as being reinstated from R/DNR and released in both cases. Or, in the case of J. J. Milan, who was also a R/DNR before the 2006 season, ProFW had him reinstated in early 2007 and he actually suddenly re-appeared on the Colts.com roster (because they probably had no idea he was still around, but we did), and later went on injured reserve. This will someday be the case for Plummer, Arline, and a "retired" guy like Jerametrius Butler, but officially it just hasn't happened yet, and I have proved that to you. Pats1 T/C 03:26, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And likewise, as far as retired guys go, we don't delete them from the roster until they officially are placed on Reserve/Retired - which, you guessed it, can be found by monitoring ProFW's transaction wire. So in the case of Brett Favre last offseason or Mark Bruener so far this offseason, Reserve/Retired, not a retirement speech of report of retirement is the key to deleting the player from the roster. Pats1 T/C 03:32, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for that explanation. 2 more questions, what exactly happened to Anthony Arline? his article doesn't go into any detail as to him not reporting for camp or Why he didn't report. and i also couldn't really figure out J. J. Milan's situation either...from what i gathered in the article.. he didn't report to the team, then he was on the roster, then he was on reserved and all over again...

Sorry if i've bugged you or hassled you in any way. Rosterguy (talk) 04:06, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, I love talking about this. Except in this case, I'm not really sure about Milan or Arline. Sometimes players, around the time of training camp, decide they're not up to it. The team is then pretty much forced to put them on R/DNR; they could cut them, but that would open the player to signing with another team. Pats1 T/C 04:12, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Arline really shouldn't have an article at all, he doesn't pass notability guidelines.►Chris NelsonHolla! 17:04, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Look at this diff, try and remember to do all this when updating player pages. Thanks.--Iamawesome800 14:44, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
