Image Copyright

From what I can tell in going through Irish copyright law (see here, keep hitting "next" to read the whole chapter), the copyright for the photo should expire 70 years after the author's death. If you can find some sort of evidence showing when the photographer died, that should give you an idea of when the copyright will expire. If it already has (he died before January 1, 1938), then you can upload it with the tag {{PD-Ireland}} to show that it is in the public domain. If not, you'll have to upload it under a claim of fair use, and make a note of when the copyright is set to expire in your rationale. As I'm not 100% on this, you may be best off asking again at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems, but I'm fairly sure that's the answer they'll give. Caher

Hi. I understand the comment about "needing a sit down when that was removed". I appreciate that some work/research went into that. As noted, however, it wasn't quite right for the context. What you might consider instead is adding a note or two in the Place names in Irish article about "places starting with Caher-" and explain the etymology. Geoffrey Keating as Gael at Ballylooby

Hey Rashers, I never meant to infer his ethnicity or nationality. A gaelic historian is a historian of gaelic stuff. Gaelic is a disambiguation page, so [little or no articles] should refer to it. I changed it to Gaels as I believed that he was someone wo studied/wrote the history of the Gaels. Either way, "Gaelic" can mean upto 18 things, I just picked one. Ah! I guess I figured that was your intent, and it seems we fully agree. You may want to check out the talk page for the article: months ago, one user argued, against the fabric of common sense, that such a tag was necessary, and another two decided to humor him (the majority, me included, was against). Ethnic group

I would be glad to see you put this page on your watchlist and contribute. On the talk page you took objection to a particular sentence or two. I think you are absolutely right and I think several other contributors to the article would agree too. There are only two editors to my knowledge who have argued otherwise: DAB:

because "identity" doesn't make for an ethnic group. It's necessary, but not sufficient. Only endogamy (and hence shared ancestry) is. Otherwise, the hippies would be an ethnic group, just as much as the Emos, the Trekkies and the trainspotters. Of course culture can shape ethnicity. By shaping marriage customs, and hence the ancestry of future generations. I really don't see the problem. dab (𒁳) 20:10, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Romani MOS

RT, I share your view that some universal style guideline for Romani-related WP articles in necessary. Talk:Romani language#Request for Comment: Romani, Romany, Roma was an attempt by me to also prompt the formulation of a consensus of this matter, so that we could collectively move on and get down to improving the content of the articles. Note that my position has shifted since the summer, and I am much more clearly in favour now of Romani over the other alternatives. Re your message: I removed it because I felt that the link was not particularly helpful in explaining or expanding upon the issue of currency tracking. Ireland - country or state?

The island of Ireland is not a country it is an island, just like Borneo, Honshu, Java.... The island is made up of the country of Ireland and the constitute country of Northern Ireland. There is also really no difference between the definition of "country" or "state" when it comes to defining a sovereign country. The difference is that the definition of the word "state" does have an alternative meaning. Not only does it have alternative meaning but millions of people in the world have a different primary understanding of the meaning of the term. In many countries, including several large countries, the use of the word "state" has the primary meaning of a territory within a federation. Since part of this whole Ireland debate is the need to include or exclude terms on the "claim" that they are needed (or not) to make things clear to the reader who is not aware of the situation in Ireland (primarily people outside Ireland & UK). If that is really the reason for this whole thing then I find it kind of ironic that you would then use "state" instead of "country" when the word "state" is ambiguous to the same readers that people have been fighting for such a long time to make sure the article is clear for them. --T*85 (talk) 21:49, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

What exactly are you trying show me? Are you really trying to say that the island of Ireland is a country & the state of Ireland is not a country? (which it says in the very first line of the Republic of Ireland article) Because if you are, then even those two articles (which I have read before) do not back up that claim. I am not trying to be an ass here, just curious where you are getting your logic from.

I expect neither of us is being an ass, we have different understandings of what those words mean. I am familiar with the use of the word 'State' to mean something precise and having the characteristic of sovereignty. My understanding of 'Country' is as something more amorphous, more of poets than lawyers. I know the words are often used interchangeable, but 'State' for me has associations of 'institutions of authority' and very precisely defined territory that country doesn't. B2C has now gone an done a "bold" move to Roma (Romani subgroup) without consensus. I'm also on the verge of giving up my engagement with Romani issues once again. One tries to be constructive, one bones up on the shcolarly literature, arms oneself with refs, but to no avail, it seems. And I thought Baltic topics were nerve-wrackingI I supposed you get the same with Irish topics, though, too. Propagandistic image?

I doubt that this image maight be regarded as "propagandistic". Propaganda for the benefit of who? For the benefit of the National Socialism? I strongly doubt it. The Nazis propagandized a restrained attitude toward the stores of the Jewes and other "inferior peoples". This image contradichts with thies principles. The reality is another one: formerly, in Romania the entire commerce with flowers was in the hands of the Roma. What is the narrative behind the use of this image on Wikipedia? That Roma had a monopoly on the retail of flowers during the second world war? Where was this image first published? By whom? For what purpose? If you think the use of this image on Wikipedia is unproblematic just because it is historically 'true' (and who knows if it has not been manipulated), then I am surprised, to say the least. If you do believe that they are dubious intentions behind the picture, please elucidate them. Until now I couldn't find anything wrong. The informations about the image can be readed in the description of the page. Sure, the image was taken in 1941, but this prooves nothing. See here a picture with a Lipovan made in Romania by the same photographer. Is this picture propagandistic too? And what about this picture made in Romania by the same photographer. I have no idea what the intentions of the photographer, editor or anyone else associated with these images were in 1941. But the uncritical repetition of this Nazi-era image and caption is not above question, and its relevance to the article, just like the other images, has not been demonstrated. Hi JD. Thanks for bringing this article to my attention. Cork is a little outside my immediate area of study, but I will say that I'm aware of Peter Hart's controversial thesis (Ryan's too). Much of the 'history' of this time is very much in the realm of speculation/revision, and unfortunately will remain so until information currently in archives, and accessible to only a few becomes more generally available. I refer specifically to the Witness Statements from the Bureau of Military history, which are as yet not available on-line and in a searchable format. Also primary docs. at the Irish Military Archives, specifically the Collins Papers and Captured Docs. There seems to be a patronising attitude that the masses 'can't handle the truth', yet! You can be sure I'll follow the article/discussion with interest, and if I come across anything of value in my archival scratchings will bring it to general attention at the Talk Page. Itinerarium Symonis Semeonis

Hi Rashers![I already posted this on my talk page, but, not being entirely au fait with how these things work, I thought it would cover all bases to post it here too!] The only complete modern edition is Mario Espostio's Itinerarium Symonis Semeonis ab Hybernia ad Terram Sanctam published (after a lot of pleading by M.E.) by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in 1960 as part IV of the Scriptores Latini Hiberniae series. I'm almost certain that it includes a parallel text English translation, but I will check it in the University library when I'm there on Monday and let you know. Hey, no problem. And it really wasn't a minor issue: if any variant is incorrect, it really should be removed, and in any case you were right about an article going with one variant and one only (although it is perhaps a bit picky in an article which still reads like what it is - a racialist personal essay that was slowly mended through edit wars, but whose priorities are still painfully visible in the structural and informative quality of the article).

I agree there should be more discussion on the project pages. But, for that to happen, there first needs to be activity. It seems that, for a period of weeks or even months, I was the only active user they had. This is ironic, because I wanted my participation in the project to be marginal - I expected others to hold it afloat, and me to contribute the odd article, tag some pages, apply the resolutions of centralized discussions). Although I believe I have a reasonable grasp of Romani history in Romania, although I enjoy writing about it, and although the articles in question have more or less serious problems that I could help fix, I never expected to be the focal point of what was once a fairly active group of users. I mean, I can't even speak Romani, and many of the discussions involving Romani culture in general are obscure to me. Things improve every time users like AKoan (Kenshin) and Kuaichik and you are around, so this it is a real pity when you guys spend loads of time disagreeing.

Even more ironic is what happened on the Romania project, which also fell into my lap; the user who created it was permablocked or banned (can't remember which, but it was for good reason), and virtually all the others who officially signed up were in and then out. It has since even been described as "Dahn's project" by a user who spent much of his time criticizing and/or insulting me. There isn't ever much going on there, and real discussions migrate to other pages - but it's still a ridiculous situation.

As you have substantially modified an existing lead, and reverted a perfectly valid compromise, I suggest you take the matter up on the corresponding discussion page. I was very happy to come to some compromise regarding this unfortunate series of reverts. But I see you've gone and reverted again. A comprehensive list of every genre in which Orwell wrote in the lead is a bad idea. For an author as prolific and diverse as Orwell, inevitably some will be left out. The all encompassing term 'author' covered this difficulty perfectly adequately. The present lead is not improved by this unnecessary 'blue list'. RashersTierney (talk) 11:58, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

A comprehensive list is, as you mention, unnecessary in the lead, but diversity is sufficiently covered by the "including/included". Open to suggestions as to how to improve the article in general, including the lead, but try going for consensus. "But I see you've gone and reverted again." works both ways... Should be available from a municipal or university library. Do you know anyone (eg student) who might help locate it and provide the missing details. Junction Festival

Hello Rashers, I am sorry if I haven't used Wikipedia in the correct way. I simply couldn't understand why I couldn't add the link to our Festival's website in the related text. I thought it would be more logical but if it is not allowed I will put the link at the bottom of the page and replace it by an internal link as I want to create a page about the Junction Festival -if that's ok. I also would like to add an image in the actual article about the festival; is it possible? I think an article about the Festival could be an excellent addition and I'd be happy to help if I can. It is certainly possible to add your own images which usually improves an articles 'worth'. It might be best to start it as a 'stub' on which you can build over time. Remember that statements must not only be true, but also verifiable if challenged. This means getting references from newspapers and reliable websites. Be careful too that the style of language used in a promo. will not generally be appropriate for an encyclopaedia. Try not to take other people's edits to heart, things can always be included again after consensus on the talk page. On my own first article I unwittingly broke a pretty basic Wikipedia rule, but my mistake was accepted as unintentional and all ended well. Don't think either that everything must be perfect before you start or that you need to be au fait with all the conventions and code that will come in time, if you stick around. Good luck. Monto Water Rats!

Hello Rasher!

It's Terry from Monto Water Rats here in London - I am sorry if I haven't got the hang of Wiki language as yet .. To let you know, we do not wish to take away anything from the history of Monto. I am a Dublin man myself!

Who are you to decide what is disruptive? I spent time and effort adding useful info to Malahide Castle which I sourced from the Castle's website. You have deleted all of this. Who are you to ban me? Under what rule? You have deleted valid content from my edit for a second time. If you tell me how you have the authority to ban me and "prove" my edit is vandalism then that'd be great, otherwise suggest changes or be more specific, it is full of valuable info about the mythology of the castle, there is no encyclopedic account of this because it relates to "myths and legends" and is about a small town in Dublin. If you disallow it on that basis there would be no room for actual accounts of small towns.
