Shakya hatnote

Please feel free to delete this but just read if before. Not interfering with your discussion. Just a little heads up.

MahenSingha is trying to falsely prove that there are no Shakyas other than some Kachhis in North India who use Shakya surname. And that Shakyas were just in ancient times,

Here are some evidences of Shakyas presently who are not Kachhis. You would find lots of other evidences if you will research.

“Sakyas are descended from the last surviving members of the Buddha’s tribe, who migrated from the Tarai region of Nepal to the Kathmandu Valley” Page 3 https://www.anthro.ox.ac.uk/fileadmin/ISCA/ACADEMIC/D_Gellner_publication_files/Buddhism_Women_and_Caste.pdf

Just search for word ‘shakya’ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newar_caste_system

  • Ogress, let me kow if the user posts bother you and you wish your talk-page semi-protected, or if you are content to just ignore them. Cheers. Abecedare (talk) 00:19, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
Semi-protected your talkpage for a week, during which time hopefully a consensus at Shakha will be reached, and everyone would have moved on. There don't seem to be too many legitimate posts by IPs/new editors on your talkpage so there shouldn't be much collateral damage in the meantime, but if you wish you can add a note on your talkpage for such editors to use article talkpage and/or ping you instead.
Also semi-protected your userpage for three months. Can be easily extended if problem persists, since there is little downside to such protection of userpages. Cheers. Abecedare (talk) 02:33, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

don't worry

thank you so much for pointing out my stupid mistakes. I feel very dumb but now i know I never meant it i'm just a huge fan of Wikipedia. Wikipedia and your advice mean a lot to me thank you (: STARR65 (talk) 02:35, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

  • No, you learn and move on. That's what improvement is all about--we've all been there, one way or another. Drmies (talk) 15:04, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

I've put page protection on for one month. I've also started a sockpuppet investigation. Give a yell if there is something else I can do. Bgwhite (talk) 05:52, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

@Bgwhite: I appreciate it, I'm not even sure how it managed to pass PROD muster in the first place. No, wait, I do: sock and meatpuppeting by cultists. Ogress smash! 05:55, 31 July 2015 (UTC)
I like the AfD discussion where a Doctor1931 chimes in. There is no user account Doctor1931, it was VThomson signing as Doctor1931. Hmmm, wonder if that is a banning offense. Will have to look that up. Careful on the word "cultists". Bgwhite (talk) 06:02, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

hi

how is adding comma's vandalizing? I did not know. I'm sorry I just really wanted to edit i'm kinda new after all i didn't know STARR65 (talk) 02:01, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

@STARR65: If you truly do not know how to use punctuation properly, don't add or remove it from pages in discrete edits. If you simply make errors while writing, that is ... well, it's not ideal but we all make mistakes and some people have disabilities like dyslexia.
However, many of your edits consisted only of the addition or removal of a comma that turned a grammatically-correct sentence into an ungrammatical one. It reeks of minor trolling. Trolling wikipedia is not hilarious, it's annoying for all the people who have to clean up.
If you aren't sure if you can help with one area, don't do it. Help somewhere else. Ogress smash! 02:18, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
@Sitush and Drmies: the comma-troll; do you remember who that was? Joshua Jonathan -Let's talk! 04:28, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
@Joshua Jonathan: I do not. Ogress smash! 04:47, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
I can't even remember us ever having one, let alone who it was. - Sitush (talk) 06:15, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
  • Hmm can't seem to remember either, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. My memory is severely affected by all those pint-drinking sessions with Sitush. Drmies (talk) 14:51, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
  • But Ogress, if I can be pedantic for a moment, I wouldn't call those commas grammatically incorrect--typically I call them mechanically incorrect (a kind of a cop-out, I admit) since punctuation isn't really grammar. By that term I mean the comma usage here introduced is not in agreement by the mechanical rules of writing we play by in English. The "comma's" error in the editor's first sentence here could conceivably be called "grammatical" since that 's (and its rules) is now part of English morphology (one could argue--it was introduced in the early modern period and was standardized by the 18th century, the golden age of English grammarians (see Apostrophe#Historical_development).

But we're not here for Advanced English Grammar, since that doesn't start until the fall and I didn't see your name on the classlist. Practically speaking, and using the widely accepted guidelines for written English, this editor made, in their comment here, a capitalization error ("how"), an apostrophe error ("comma's"), a comma error (needs one after "sorry"), a punctuation error (period or semicolon missing after "edit"), a capitalization error ("i'm"), a punctuation error (period or semicolon missing after "all"), a capitalization error ("i"), and a punctuation error (final period missing). I suppose these are the typical characteristics of internet commentary, but on Wikipedia we should be more formal than that, even on talk pages (note the ambiguity in the placement and missing punctuation of "after all", rendering meaning ambiguous), and the editor should find things to edit that they're better at. Note I ended with a preposition, because I can. Drmies (talk) 15:03, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

  • @Drmies: You are technically correct, which is the best kind of correct. But I digress. i was more concerned about the edits they made to their user page where they removed an apostrophe in order to get the correct internet talk, because they were introducing similar errors on wikipedia pages. I don't care much about discussion so long as its understandable, but when it appears on content pages... Ogress smash! 06:23, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

Problems at Hargeisa

Hi, I've blocked user Hanad555 for 31 hours based on your AIV complaint. In the future, it would really help if you'd explain in your edit summaries why you are taking issue with the user's contributions. This will make it easier for admins to understand your rationale. For instance, if your complaints at Hargeisa was that he was deliberately adding factual errors that were in conflict with the existing reference (namely this PDF, then an edit summary like "User's change is inconsistent with existing source - source says 750 residents, not 1 million. Ref lists city as 652nd, not 152nd." would be helpful the first time, and if he persisted, "User continues to introduce factual errors in conflict with references" would make it easier for admins to figure out what your beef is. As it was, I had to look at his edits, then try to figure out what wrong he was doing. Anyhow, thanks for listening, and thanks for helping to prevent disruption! Regards, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:19, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

@Cyphoidbomb: I will definitely try to do that in the future. In the case of Hanad555 (talk · contribs) I was mostly supporting other editors so most of the edit summaries were not mine, but I should be precise in my edit summaries. I forget sometimes when I am tired, apologies, and that makes a lot of work for others. Ogress smash! 19:54, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
Much appreciated, and thanks for your hard work! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:56, 1 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi Ogress. Just closed this as 'moved', but it may be a while before it goes through because the page is protected, in case you want to comment. You argued against, and I tend to doubt myself when you disagree with me. However, I don't see what you do when searching for sources. "Elara" is used for other things, so I did an NGRAM search for "King Elara" vs "King Ellalan". The latter returned zero hits. At GBooks limited to the 21st century, King Elara gets 6 pages (with mentions visible in the preview) while King Ellalan gets half a page (4 hits). Of course, some of those could be reprints from the 19th century, but I don't see how Ellalan could be prefered per COMMONNAME unless I'm missing something. Ping me if you find this worth responding to. — kwami (talk) 21:22, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

@Kwamikagami: I literally do not remember what I did because it was quite a while ago. It was a while ago though and I can't remember everything, sorry. It's been kind of a hellish few weeks. COMMONNAME just didn't seem clear because the subject is so obscure and complicated in terms of its importance to Tamils in Sri Lanka. Ogress smash! 02:35, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Tintagel

In this edit you introduced a reference to "Radcliffe", but there is no such source listed in the bibliography. This is a common error with this style of citation. Please could you amend the reference so it includes whatever it is to which you are referring? Thank you. DuncanHill (talk) 21:08, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

There's another for "Blackford" in the same edit. DuncanHill (talk) 21:16, 6 August 2015 (UTC) Blackford seems to refer to the Cornish Church Guide by Charles Henderson. DuncanHill (talk) 21:20, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Terminalia chebula

Why did you delete the names of Terminalia Chebula in various languages? In fact, that is the most useful part of the whole page. Most people I know who have looked up this page search online in their language and stumble upon this page. Nobody knows the scientific name. I too first came to the page by looking up Kadukkai. Please restore the section with the names in various languages. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.10.104.99 (talk) 23:17, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Discuss it on the talk page, as I said in my edit summary: Talk:Terminalia chebula. Ogress smash! 23:20, 6 August 2015 (UTC)
I thought you meant your user talk page. I will repost it there. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.10.104.99 (talk) 02:36, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Ayutthaya Kingdom may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s and 2 "{}"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
