செக்கு(chekku) அரை(arai) if pronounced quickly in succession becomes செக்கரை (chekkarai) . chekkarai is modified in சரக்கரை(chakkarai). The word chakkarai(சர்க்கரை ) is in current use in Tamil. Shakkar in Hindi is a corrupt form of chakkari. The word Sugar in English is from Hindi shakkar. Etymologically the root of sugar is Tamil phrase ‘chekku arai’(செக்கரை) vellam (வெல்லம் ) is the jaggery. sugar candy is white and also crystalline; this is because the Chinese evaorated cane juice from porcelain vessels. The word Cheeni also used for sugar means a product of China.

 On the contrary cane juice is even now evaporated in iron vessels; the juice absorbs the iron oxide and looks brown.   

The western historians say that China brought sugarcane to India. This is true as Odisha state is supposed to have got sugar cane from the Chinese and made sugar. But there is a very important reference in Tamil literature. A cera king is said to have brought sugar cane to Tamil Nadu. The rational conclusion is that Nattu Kottai chettiars brought sugar cane from Polynesia and they are the ones to construct the chekku. The Cera ruled Tamil Nadu upto Thajavur. Origin of the plant sugar cane: Mention of sugar cane is mentioned in Natrinai. Natrinai (Tamil: நற்றிணை), a classical Tamil literature. The period is that of Sangam Age (100 BCE - 200 CE). At the latest sugar cane was known in Tamil Nadu during this period. Sugar cane originated South Asia and SouthEast Asia.. The species S.Barberi originated in India and the species S.edule and S.officinarum from Timor (New Guinea ) in the Pacific. Emperor Darius of Persia (in 510 B.C) of Persia took sugar that came from India. That is, sugarcane existed in North India long before Darius.
