Invitation to Admin confidence survey

Hello,

Beginning in September 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Anti-harassment tool team will be conducting a survey to gauge how well tools, training, and information exists to assist English Wikipedia administrators in recognizing and mitigating things like sockpuppetry, vandalism, and harassment.

The survey should only take 5 minutes, and your individual response will not be made public. This survey will be integral for our team to determine how to better support administrators.

To take the survey sign up here and we will send you a link to the form.

We really appreciate your input!

Please let us know if you wish to opt-out of all massmessage mailings from the Anti-harassment tools team.

For the Anti-harassment tools team, SPoore (WMF), Community Advocate, Community health initiative (talk) 19:52, 13 September 2017 (UTC)

I am drafting my workshop comments there. Have I screwed up in any way? Do I delete unneeded parameters, or should I fill them? Have I filled too few parameters? Am I way off-base? pbp 20:37, 19 September 2017 (UTC)

For the purposes of neutrality, I cannot recommend to you on how to proceed, other than to say that you have seemingly copied the workshop sections that allow editors to provide comments and proposals, in a segregated area, for the workshop. The case clerks may be able to assist you with any malformed formatting issues when you do edit/participate on the main case workshop page. Likewise, on the main case workshop page, if you edit in areas not specified for your use, the case clerks will notify you. Mkdw talk 20:45, 19 September 2017 (UTC)

And DocumentError's whole participation at ArbComm seems to be based not on Rubin's actions or the case but on his multi-year obsession with me (in the diffs all references to "User:PBS's friend" are a cute way of not naming me). [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] and block log for context [6]

His user contributions tell the story [7] Between mid Jan 2015 and Aug 13, 2015 DocError spent almost all his time at ANi fighting me, blocked, or fiddling with his unblock requests. Between August 13, 2015 and Sept 14, 2017, DocError made just 17 edits in only 3 editing days. On Sept 14 he resurfaced to post at ArbComm critical of me [8] and he has only made a handful of non-arbcomm edits since which include posting negative things about me on two talkpages: [9] and this series of posts at [10].

This WP:SPA type focus is not healthy. Suggestions or solutions? I don't expect his posts to influence the committee much, but this is spreading beyond ArbComm now. Legacypac (talk) 08:51, 27 September 2017 (UTC)

@Legacypac: Each editor will bring their own bias and motivations to their involvement in the case. Anything that exceeds the case scope or if things become hostile, the clerks or I will step in. For incidents outside the case, the community venues for dispute resolution would be the next after speaking with DocumentError directly about your grievance. Mkdw talk 03:46, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
This was brought up at ANi by other editors [11]Thanks for your feedback. Legacypac (talk) 16:37, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
Legacypac - in the future when you go "digging" [sic] to make allegations against me to an admin, could you kindly ping me as per WP:NOTIFY? In the last two years we have had exactly two pages in which there has been any interaction between us. Most recently I objected to you deleting my Talk page comments [12] in violation of WP:TPO. You were previously warned by Cryptic that deleting other editors Talk comments would result in an immediate block [13] if you did it again. Since Cryptic is busy at the moment [14], you seem to have dodged what was all but an inevitable fourth block and should be thankful. It, therefore, makes no sense to me why you would proactively draw attention to your editing of other editors Talk page comments to an Admin (MkdW) since I, and others involved, had decided to let sleeping dogs lay. That seems ... ill-advised? DocumentError (talk) 07:07, 2 October 2017 (UTC)

The Anti-Harassment Tools team is seeking input about building the Interaction Timeline feature.

We’re inviting you to join the discussion because you use similar tools such as the Editor Interaction Analyser and User compare report during sockpuppet investigations.

You can leave comments on the on wiki discussion page or send an email to the Anti-Harassment Tools team.

Incorrect sock tags

Hi there. I wanted to let you know that 2 of the accounts you recently tagged were attributed to the wrong sockmaster as seen in this CU case, they are actually socks of another vandal, User:Incorrigible Troll. That guy has a tendency to impersonate other sockmasters, in addition to severe trolling of other users. Can you please change the tags for User:UnderArmourKid did Hurricane Irma and User:Pikachu GD accordingly? I don't want anyone to be confused be the tags. Thanks. LightandDark2000 (talk) 18:36, 14 October 2017 (UTC)

@DoRD: can you please help out here? We have a case of a troll/vandal impersonating another sockmaster in the case I mentioned above. Thanks. LightandDark2000 (talk) 18:41, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
LightandDark2000, you should contact the CU who ran the checks on these accounts - I haven't had any dealing with either sockmaster in a while. —DoRD (talk) 01:56, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
@LightandDark2000 and Zzuuzz: Just seeing this now. Did the checkuser connect Pikachu GD (talk · contribs) and UnderArmourKid did Hurricane Irma (talk · contribs) to Incorrigible Troll (talk · contribs)? If they are only connected to Incorrigible Troll by behavioural evidence, then the tags should remain and altmaster= used to name Incorrigible Troll. Mkdw talk 01:42, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
They were Checkuser confirmed to Incorrigible Troll by technical data. The Checkuser who ran the check clarified it over here. The troll is trying to mimic the original sockmaster (UAK), but the behavior demonstrated by the sock account's edits don't really match up, from what we've seen recently from UAK. LightandDark2000 (talk) 01:43, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. I will update the tags accordingly. Mkdw talk 01:46, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
You're welcome. There's a third imposter account by this guy called User:Iron Man GD (also confirmed by a CU in the same case), but whether or not you want to tag this account is up to you. LightandDark2000 (talk) 01:55, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
I got that one a few minutes before. . Mkdw talk 02:07, 16 October 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, yes CheckUser does say these are Incorrigible Troll and not UAK. -- zzuuzz (talk) 06:22, 16 October 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia Asian Month 2017: Invitation to Participate

Hello! Last year, you signed up to participate in Wikipedia Asian Month (WAM) 2016 on the English Wikipedia. The event was an international success, with hundreds of editors creating thousands of articles on Asian topics across dozens of different language versions of Wikipedia.

I'd like to invite you to join us for Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, which once again lasts through the month of November. The goal is for users to create new articles on Asian-related content, each at least 3,000 bytes and 300 words in length. Editors who create at least four articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard!

Also be sure to check out the Wikipedia Asian Art Month affiliate event - creating articles on Asian art topics can get you a Metropolitan Museum of Art postcard!

If you're interested, please sign up here for the English Wikipedia. If you are interested in also working on other language editions of Wikipedia, please visit the meta page to see other participating projects. If you have any questions, please visit our talk page.

Thank you!

- User:SuperHamster and User:Titodutta on behalf of The English Wikipedia WAM Team

This will be the last message you receive from the English Wikipedia WAM team for being a 2016 participant. If you sign up for WAM 2017, you will continue receiving periodic updates on the 2017 event.

CodyCruickshank appeal

User CodyCruickshank here, IP address 122.148.253.11 and you'd know my email address. Since your ban on my account until late September of next year which I still feel is ridiculously excessive, I have made further factual edits on articles from the following IPs: 58.167.85.144, 121.216.126.100, 121.217.9.249, 101.161.11.111, 101.175.197.137 and 121.216.126.110. You can check for yourself, I've not made a single shred of vandalism on any of the edits from those addresses. I want to continue fairly contributing to more articles but I can't continue to do so from other peoples' houses. I've got nothing to hide. Will you at least attempt to have my account and home IP unbanned by the end of February? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.167.85.144 (talkcontribs)

ANI Experiences survey

The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (led by the Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) is conducting a survey for en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Mkdw. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Message: Hi, you made two comments on this appeal that I am not able to see as CU comments. I was wondering if there any part of these comments that would assist me in reviewing the appeal and whether they can be placed in clear?

Notes:

  • If you do not have an account on UTRS, you may create one at the administrator registration interface.
  • Alternatively, you can respond here and indicate whether you are supportive or opposed to an unblock for this user and your rationale, if applicable.

  • @Just Chilling: Just to clarify because I'm not sure if that's clear, these "not visible" comments are log entries for CU checks... perhaps indeed the wording could be improved however :p Ben · Salvidrim!  03:08, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
I responded on UTRS. In short it was a follow up after Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/CodyCruickshank. Mkdw talk 16:37, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
@Salvidrim!: Thx to Salvidrim! - I didn't know that. I agree that the template wording could be tweaked. Thx to Mkdw for a helpful response. :-) Just Chilling (talk) 19:31, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
(Sorry Mkdw to highjack your talkpage for this lol) But yea JC last night I submitted a pull request on Github to tweak the wording. Next time our tooldevs have some coding time they'll check it out. :) Ben · Salvidrim!  19:38, 21 December 2017 (UTC)

And olive branch & holiday wishes!

Mkdw, please accept these holiday wishes :)

I've caused this year to end on a chord of disappointment for many, but I hope that despite my mistakes and the differences in opinion and perspectives, and regardless of what the outcome is or in what capacity I can still contribute in the coming year, we can continue working together directly or indirectly on this encyclopedic project, whose ideals are surely carried by both of our hearts. I'm hoping I have not fallen in your esteem to the level where "no hard feelings" can no longer ring true, because I highly respect you and your dedication to Wikipedia, and I sincerely wish you and your loved ones all the best for 2018.

  • Ben · Salvidrim!  03:59, 21 December 2017 (UTC), humbled but optimistic about the upcoming year of renewal and growth!

Concern about harm to Wikipedia

I am trying to greatly improve the WestJet article, even to the point of GA or FA. I want to get more pictures of WestJet Encore. Currently there is only one photo in all of Wikipedia and Commons.

I am writing to you because, more than a year ago, you blocked user Martin Kulcsar, who took the only WestJet Encore photo in all of Wikipedia or Commons. It doesn't do any good for me to write to him.

Do you know of anyone who lives near Toronto airport or Calgary airport that can take some WestJet Encore photos, preferably someone with a good camera? Do you have any suggestions on how to get some photos? Thanks for your help.Vanguard10 (talk) 04:54, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

@Vanguard10: Yes, User:Martin Kulcsar was a sock puppet of Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/Filipz123. I am flying to Ottawa tomorrow so I will see if there are any Westjet Encore planes at any of the gates. Otherwise, you may want to ask at Wikipedia:WikiProject Toronto or Wikipedia:WikiProject Alberta. Commons:User:Helmy oved might be able to help you at the Commons. They seem to transfer a lot of plane images over from flickr under Creative Commons licenses. Mkdw talk 16:45, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for your kind offer. When using your mop, I realize that it can be frustrating to uncover socks and that there is a natural response to want to whack and punish them. Do give consideration to if sock suspects are productive and if there is a chance that they are not the same person, possible a sister or uninvolved roommate. Whatever it was, have an enjoyable trip to Ottawa and, if you don't get any pictures, I still can work on the article myself and even get some pictures later in the year. Bon voyage! Vanguard10 (talk) 03:57, 1 February 2018 (UTC)
@Vanguard10: I have added File:C-GWEU (21331609048).jpg and File:C-FWEP Westjet Encore Dash 8-Q400.jpg to the WestJet Encore article. One of the images was already on the Commons and the other I found on Flickr under a CC BY 2.0 license with the assistance of Commons:User:User:FlickreviewR 2. I hope these will assist you in your article writing efforts.
In regards to SPI and CU actions, I always try and keep an open mind when dealing with appeals. In the case of Martin Kulcsar, the checkuser evidence was substantial. Mkdw talk 07:23, 1 February 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for finding the two photos! Hope Ottawa is not too cold. Want to take a photo of the airport terminal? That could be of potential use to Wikipedia. I would be happy to review it and possibly insert it in an appropriate article. Vanguard10 (talk) 04:42, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

CodyCruickshank

Hi Mkdw. You indef'd CodyCruickshank back in September 2017, and were also involved in Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/CodyCruickshank/Archive, so I figured you would be a good person to ask. I think they might be back as Special:Contributions/125.168.151.10. It's just a hunch, but CodyCruickshank had problems understanding non-free content use policy which lead to Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2017 May 29#File:2015 NRL Logo.png, then yesterday the IP shows up and starts adding the logo to various articles. It could just a coincidence I guess, but I don't a complete newbie would know enough to try and edit a non-free use rationale before adding the logo to various pages. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:58, 31 March 2018 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: Yes, that is almost certainly CodyCruickshank. IPs blocked. What a mess, Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/CodyCruickshank. Mkdw talk 20:33, 1 April 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for checking. It seemed a bit unsual for a "new editor" to immediately start editing a non-free use rationale like 125.168.151.10 did; of course, anything is possible, but it did seem like the IP had experience editing. FWIW, the IP posted a query on my user talk asking about this at 2015 NRL Logo.png where I mentioned that such an edit was a bit unusual. The IP, however, never responded to my post. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:58, 1 April 2018 (UTC)

Invitation to participate in study

Hello,

I am E. Whittaker, an intern at Wikimedia with the Scoring Team to create a labeled dataset, and potentially a tool, to help editors deal with incivility when they encounter it on talk pages. A full write-up of the study can be found here: m:Research:Civil_Behavior_Interviews. We are currently recruiting editors to be interviewed about their experiences with incivility on talk pages. Would you be interested in being interviewed? I am contacting you because of your involvement in Wikipedia’s Women in Red project. The interviews should take ~1 hour, and will be conducted over BlueJeans (which does allow interviews to be recorded). If, so, please email me at ewhit@umich.edu in order to schedule an interview.

Polite and respectful inquiry

Please be patient and don't block me. I pose this question not to dispute your action today on behalf of the Arbitration Committee in indefinitely blocking a user but out of curiosity as to how the process works. When a single member of ArbCom takes such action in the absence of either an open request for arbitration or a recently completed case, are ordinary Wikpedians such as myself permitted to ask what offense(s) specifically triggered this sanction? KalHolmann (talk) 21:09, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

@KalHolmann: The Arbitration Committee is elected by the Community "[t]o resolve matters unsuitable for public discussion for privacy, legal, or similar reasons;". Unfortunately this means the Committee is sometimes unable to discuss these matters publicly without compromising the privacy of the issue or individuals involved. In this case, it was a central and deciding consideration for the decision to ultimately indefinitely block the editor in question. Regretfully I am not in a position to comment further. ARBCOM?

Would you please consider running for ArbCom again? We need good candidates, and currently there are only three people running to fill six seats, and two of those three people are not even admins. You have always been a very knowledgeable and reliable Arb. I hope you will consider running. The deadline is in several days. Thank you. Softlavender (talk) 10:40, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

@Softlavender: I put myself forward last time because I had similar concerns about the number of candidates running. Since 2016, last minute candidacy announcements have become the trend which does make this a bit of a waiting game. I made a personal commitment that I would approach WP:ACE2018 the same way as I did in 2016. Should enough qualified candidates put themselves forward for consideration, I will not run again. I am encouraged to see Courcelles put their hat in and perhaps with a bit more persuasion Doug Weller. Hopefully this puts us well on our way towards a well rounded group of candidates. Hi David Tornheim. Thanks for checking in. Right now my plate is pretty full as I am trying to catch up on some non-election ArbCom business. I have a few other unanswered questions as well, but I'd be willing to discuss with you the question after the election (regardless of the result). In short, yes I do think it occurs and WP:GamerGate was a brutal example because it involved off-wiki harassment, collusion, canvassing, and POV pushing. When these matters are before ArbCom, editor conduct is where ArbCom should be directing its time and focus. Mkdw talk 22:49, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
Okay. Thanks for letting me know. --David Tornheim (talk) 23:17, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Mkdw. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Arbitrary deletion of article on Frederick Klenner

I have to take issue with your decision, on Nov. 4, to delete the article I had posted on Frederick Klenner. None of the editors who voted to delete refuted a single fact presented in the Frederick Klenner article. Instead, they vented their prejudice against the nutritional therapy practiced by Dr. Klenner.

Guy, who launched the deletion campaign, set the tone by branding Klenner “a figure in the world of orthomolecular quackery” — with no substantiation. When I pointed out that the clinical data presented in the article enabled any medical doctor or researcher to test — and perhaps refute — Klenner’s therapeutic claims, Guy haughtily responded: “His claims have already been tested and found to be false. In any case that is irrelevant to Wikipedia's notability standards…” I then challenged Guy to “cite a single scientific experiment that used Klenner’s dosing of sodium ascorbate and refuted his clinical findings” — and he lapsed into silence.

By laying bare Klenner’s clinical methods and procedures, the Klenner article enabled falsifiability. The editors who voted to delete, on the other hand, showed their scorn for falsifiability: None of them had the openness of mind to propose: If such-and-such therapeutic claims get confirmed by scientific experiments, I will no longer reject Klenner’s clinical methods.

Obviously, the question of notability hinges on whether Klenner’s clinical findings prove valid: If they do, he will rank as one of the greatest doctors in world history. The deletion crew employed circular logic to argue against notability: Klenner is not notable, they argued, because his therapeutic claims are invalid. They presented no facts to support this latter premise, simply presuming it a priori.

I feel we should respect the intelligence of Wikipedia readers, enabling them to form their own opinions as to whether — and to what degree — Frederick Klenner was notable. Danslation (talk) 08:09, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Hello Danslation. The clear consensus at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Frederick Klenner was to delete the article. Several editors disputed the accuracy of the article in addition to whether it should be included. You may appeal the deletion at WP:DRV. Mkdw talk 21:19, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Deletion review for Frederick Klenner

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Frederick Klenner. Because you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedily deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review. Danslation (talk) 09:15, 25 November 2018 (UTC)

The DRV outcome was "speedy close" before I could comment. I hope this puts to rest your concerns that the article was "arbitrarily deleted". The AFD had a clear consensus and the DRV also affirms the closure. I would encourage you to adhere to the advice from several other editors about neutral point of view, fringe theories. and reliable sources. In addition, WP:TRUE has some relevant information:

"But it's true!" is not a sufficient reason to keep information on Wikipedia. The purpose of Wikipedia is to be an encyclopedia of high quality. To pursue that mission, a number of standards, guidelines and policies have been set in place. Based on these policies, some information or articles will be deleted even though they may be true.

Mkdw talk 19:09, 25 November 2018 (UTC)
Unfortunately, this editor decided to start an identical DRV. I NAC closed that. Reyk YO! 08:52, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Hello from a college student

Hello, I am fairly new at editing Wikipedia pages, so I may not know the ropes, I was hoping to post information on the Sheng Nu article about the rising movement, however, it is still a work in progress. I was wondering if there was a way in which I can save the changes without publishing it. I am still writing a draft and would like to see how it looks on the page without actually publishing it yet. I have read your feedback and appreciate the advice you have given me. Thank you in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jcarmenwu (talkcontribs) 19:43, 27 November 2018 (UTC)

@Jcarmenwu: Hello are you editing with Anawbsn20 as part a class assignment? There are some strict requirements for content to ensure it is written in a neutral point of view. Even if it's true, it must be written neutrally and requires a valid citation. The article requires balance and normally opinions from a few individuals would not be included unless their comments were directly related to the topic, in this case the term. Instead, these comments are being used as examples of sexism, which relates more to Sexism in China. If you are writing about the feminist movement in China, adding this information to Feminism in China would be more appropriate. On Wikipedia there are many articles. Changing the article about the term, sheng nu, to cover everything about sexism and the feminist movement expands the topic too broadly. There are other articles for it and these topics should only be covered in the article about the term as it directly relates to the term. Mkdw talk 20:32, 27 November 2018 (UTC)
@mkdw Yes, I am working with two other students, Anawbsn20 and Evelyn. Sheng Nu is already discussed in feminism in China and we want to focus on the rising movement within Sheng Nu and how those are responding Sheng Nu. I understand your concerns with our sexism topic in Sheng Nu and I will keep a neutral POV as well as more focus on Sheng Nu responses. Thank you for your speedy replies and thank you in advance for your suggestions and advice! Jcarmenwu (talk) 02:12, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
@Jcarmenwu: Thank you. If the focus is about the 'sheng nu movement' then a section in the sheng nu article would seem appropriate. I think it is important to not cover too thoroughly on topics already covered in other articles. Could I propose the sub-section titled, 'Sheng nu#Sexism in China' be now moved under the section 'China'? Also, it could be reduced so it provides a more brief overview of the main article. Lastly, the citations you have found so far are very important so thank you for adding those. There are still some sentences that do not have a citation and still present too strongly with respect to NPOV. Do you have any sources that directly talk about the 'sheng nu movement' specifically? Mkdw talk 18:41, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
If you would like to ping me in any talk page discussions, feel free to use the template {{ping}}. The format coding format to ping me specifically would be {{ping|Mkdw}}. Mkdw talk 18:43, 29 November 2018 (UTC)

Recent update to restrictions

May I (or would you) leave a note on my talkpage requesting that any DYK-related discussions be conducted at WP:TRM since it appears the TBAN extends to my own talkpage, yet not WP:TRM or its talkpage...? Preferably a message box at the top as I do have significant traffic on my regular talkpage (as well as the thousands of monthly pageviews of my errors page..) It also appears that should I respond to a message on my talkpage related to DYK or its process that it would also be an infringement, even if it were just to direct people to the talk page of WP:TRM? Is that correct? Can I also clarify that if this is an infringement of said TBAN, could it be removed without incurring a two-month block? I would have mentioned this earlier but have had one or two distracting days. Cheers. The Rambling Man (talk) 19:57, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

I will verify with the committee, but as I understand it, WP:ERRORS2 has been granted as an exemption only. If you are not able to respond to editors on your user talk page or direct them to raise the issue at WP:ERRORS2, then a template seems possible. I will go ahead and create something for now and remove it if its decided otherwise. Mkdw talk 20:55, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
Makes no logical sense, but it was my reading of the final mess. Thanks. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:03, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
If you're able to talk about DYK at User talk:The Rambling Man/ERRORS then doing so at User talk:The Rambling Man would seem reasonable, or in the very least for you to move the discussion to WP:ERRORS2 and its talk page. Mkdw talk 21:06, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
That's not what the newly rephrased restriction says at all though. Also, could I just clarify that if I'm reviewing GANs and FLCs (and even FACs), if I raise issues that are related to the fact that editor's may not be competent in areas, such as MOS, e.g. "that shouldn't be a hyphen, it should be an en-dash" (or indeed, like I did earlier today at ITN where I reminded a long-standing editor that we don't use images of items that were similar but not identical to vehicles involved in disasters), would that now infringe the "competence" setting of the motion as there was a mad rush at the end it seems to remove "general" which of course covered just badmouthing people, rather than enabling me to tell editors where and why they were making mistakes? The Rambling Man (talk) 21:09, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
As I understand it, the two examples you outlined would be allowed. You are making MOS policy based arguments about the content and not commenting on the competence of the editor. I am however only speaking for myself and I preferred not removing "general" from the wording. If you would like to know for sure, I would suggest emailing the list and we can provide you a definitive answer, or (I imagine not as appealing) you can file a clarification at ARCA. Mkdw talk 21:22, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
Well it turned out that this was raised earlier before the closure but was ignored. So although I've only spent a few minutes trying to catch up and understand what was decided, it seems there are already two major areas that need clarification (talk page, or not talk page, and constructive criticism of content, even if it's down to phrasing or language or tone or POV or anything, i.e. am I restricted to making reviews of prose content etc using only policy-based argument each time?). I'd prefer this not be conducted behind closed doors. And I'm not clear on how Arbs were voting on a "clarification" which was being continually "re-clarified" during the voting process. That, surely, is not supposed to be how it works? If you're now saying that I need to email Arbcom for clarification of such basic questions, some of which were already brought up during the discussion, that's a very disappointing outcome indeed. Seems to me as if the rewording has left it very much open to gaming by others, and completely prohibitive in areas in which I actively participate which weren't even discussed in this process. Is that where I stand at this point? Perhaps not paying enough attention to this at the end of the ridiculously lengthy carnival of fun was my downfall, and now I'm stuck. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:41, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

By the way, welcome back to the committee. Looks like we're already lining up your first clarification. Or is it a clarification2...? The Rambling Man (talk) 11:06, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

International Webcasting Association - page deletion

hello, I was just doing a (very, very infrequent) check of some of the pages I've helped create over the years and noticed this one had been deleted. I'm sure it must have fallen into disrepair... I would be happy to write a new page (and would like access to the old content if possible if we replace it).

Why? The IWA was created during the period a very nascent webcasting/streaming industry was starting to exist. As a body it was founded in the US and I created a European chapter. Although it's no longer in action, I think it has some historical value as a reference during those formative days. I've started writing up some of this history here https://dgen.net/0/webcasting-history/

Happy to take your advice on what to do next ... and, given a few other things I created over a decade ago seem to be falling to a similar fate, how to assess & position things appropriately so they are less likely to vanish.

I noted, for example, that some of the comments made were that they couldn't find many references to it online (e.g. Awards). This is clearly tricky to come back on, but many of the references to it were on mailing lists and sites that don't exist any more. I can do a trawl through the internet archive as well if that helps.

many thanks Gavin Starks (talk) 06:50, 21 December 2018 (UTC)

Hello Gavin Starks. I performed the deletion but the discussion and decision to delete it was made at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/International Webcasting Association. Essentially, all articles require significant coverage from multiple independent and reliable sources to meet Wikipedia's inclusion criteria. In looking at the article at the time of deletion, the article did not meet these criteria. Mkdw talk 00:07, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, I understand what you are saying. I would like your advice on what to do about things where many of the references were on mailing lists and sites that don't exist any more. I can do a trawl through the internet archive as well if that helps? How do I add something to WIkipedia that might not have 'current' references elsewhere on the web? 82.68.128.230 (talk) 07:25, 7 January 2019 (UTC)
Alternative sources can include books, newspapers, magazines, and other publications. If the International Webcasting Association has not received significant coverage in publications, there is a good chance it does not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines for inclusion. A General Question

Hi Mkdw, thanks for your great advice. Can I ask you a general question: If person A hates person B for some reason, so person A continues to say bad words about person B at person A's self-press, which got spread and uploaded such article or video to youtube or other BBS, and person A add such bad words to Wikipedia with reference of his self-press and the other uploaded articles or BBS threads. Is person A's behavior on Wikipedia considered "rightful" or legal under Wikipedia policy? Wraper11 (talk) 18:15, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

@Wraper11: I cannot provide you any legal advice but if someone is harassing you both on and off-wiki, you may report it. Mkdw talk 20:19, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

About my editing restriction

Hi there Mkdw. I'm not trying to get put of my one account restriction. It's just that Tony agreed on it being on for a year, not indefinitely, like you put in the editing restrictions page. I just came to try and fix the error. Thank you. The Duke 23:04, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

@The Duke of Nonsense: Yes, I see that and forgot I had recommended that as well. I have changed it to one year and put in a reminder that WP:VALIDALT/WP:ILLEGIT would apply thereafter. Mkdw talk 23:10, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

Hello, I appreciate your clarification on here few moments ago, but this is really new for me as I never experienced something like this before - and I have been around for decade or more. You directed me toward seeking other options in dispute resolution - I guess 3O should be place to start - before eventually return to Arb request, but what happens when article and/or issue is too obscure and uninteresting for community to get involved, what should I do if no other editors, not mention admins, are interested or willing to approach and offer opinion, comment, assistance or what ever is appropriate under the circumstances. If nothing happens, and I have a feeling that is real possibility, what is left for me eventually.--౪ Santa ౪99° 18:42, 26 March 2019 (UTC)

@Santasa99: You must read and follow all the steps listed at WP:DR. There are several other actions required after WP:3O before you can seek Arbitration. An arbitration case is a last resort measure and often we only deal with issues that have been problematic over years not days. Additionally, arbitration does not decide on matters related to content, only editor conduct. Unless there are severe conduct issues that the community has not been able to address, such as by implementing interaction bans, topic bans, blocks, and a wide array of other options (potentially against you as well), the Arbitration Committee will not get involved. Finally, if you find yourself in a stalemate about content, then it's very likely the issue will become exhausted and go no where. You will have to find a compromise or maintain the status quo. While you may not find editors who are necessarily interested in weighing in on the content aspect, there are plenty of places and editors who will intervene with respect to conduct related issues if discussions deteriorate. All of this is explained at WP:DR and the many other policies we have around working collectively and collaboratively with other editors. Mkdw talk 18:57, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
You will almost certainly have your editing privileges revoked if you continue to edit war. Mkdw talk 19:03, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
I actually think that I confused Arb with Notice board, is that possibility, are these two forums different places? And what is the point of 3RR if it is me who is going to suffer, and other party is one who broke that guideline in the first place, if I understood that rule correctly - I mean, if I can't undo editor's revert than how can I ever cite and call upon 3RR, guideline itself would be redundant. Editor seem encouraged with dismissal of my Arb request, it probably never occur to him/her that it was my error in judgement, instead it perceived it as a license to revert my edit again. Thanks, I really appreciate, but this situation is discouraging to be honest.--౪ Santa ౪99° 19:50, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
Again, it's all listed at WP:DR including an entire section called "noticeboards". While you may disagree with 3RR and its effectiveness, it is one of our core requirements and protection policies and has been in effect since 2004 (some fifteen years). If you violate it again, you will almost certainly be blocked from editing as with the other party should they violate it. You can weigh whether your disagreement with the policy is worth potentially losing your editing privileges over. Bluntly, I think you would find this situation much less discouraging if you took the time to read over the instructions before proceeding with any dispute resolution attempt. The case request page has very clear instructions including a guide, which would have saved you a considerable amount of time and effort had you followed them. Broadly, you will find a similar experience everywhere else on Wikipedia if you operate without an understanding of the rules and the policies that govern making you an equal contributor to your own frustration. If you continue to engage in processes without understanding them, and carelessly consume the time of the community by having them explain things to you, like I am doing now, which you should be educating yourself on, you will find your options increasingly reduced (WP:BOOMERANG). The discussion above is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Vladimir Gendelman

Hi, you mentioned you could restore an article that had previously been deleted to my userspace. Could you do that? The article is Vladimir Gendelman. I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks. PeRshGo (talk) 05:51, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

@PeRshGo: As mentioned at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Vladimir Gendelman, WP:REFUND is where you can request drafts to be undeleted. That being said, I see you have recently resumed editing and on March 7 you had several edits suppressed due to copyright violations on the article Detroit St. Patrick's Parade. I think this is something you're going to need to address first by thoroughly reading up on our copyright policy and demonstrating you can strictly adhere to it. Mkdw talk 18:20, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
Sorry I missed that. Thanks for the help. PeRshGo (talk) 17:17, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Thursday April 4 and Friday April 5: Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College

Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City.

New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Your Help is Required

Hi Mkdw your help is requested please in restoration of lawful context information removed unnecessarily by an editor from the old article of a notable person belongs to Quetta. Aslam 10:59, 23 May 2019 (UTC)

@Aslam Kassi: Please change your signature so it does not link to an article. It should instead link to your account user page or user talk page. If you wish to make changes to Quetta, I suggest you implement them yourself or discuss the matter on the article talk page. I am also unclear what you mean by "lawful context information". Do you mean context information that is compliant with Wikipedia policies, or context information required by law? Mkdw talk 05:56, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

You last received feedback on it on 15 June 2019; in my opinion, you have not substantially expanded the number of independent and reliable in-depth coverage establishing Sangramsingh Thakur's notability. Request for your review expertise.

Hullo, I am asking for your expertise in resolving a copyright charge that was leveled against an article that I wrote. After writing the article I was hit by a car and unable to use computers for 6 months. Signing back onto Wikipedia I was startled by the notice because I do not plagiarize material. That said, after reviewing the copyright charge (which used Ervios Copyright check) I noticed that the material in question was a listing of books written by and awards given to the subject. I believe that I ma correct in this assessment but would like to appeal to someone with greater experience than I have to review my work and to let me know if I have indeed committed plagiarism and if so, how to fix it. I am aware that you are busy and have not expectation that you will respond to my request anytime soon. Please let me know if you would be willing.

As substantive comment had been made by the community by that time, I was told that would be inappropriate without Committee consent. Additionally, as my request for a word limit extension was denied, I have not been able to sufficiently comment in support of an expanded scope. The most I could do was shoehorn: The request is to review the matter in its entirety. Eric as an issue or as victim; irrelevant. I just want it settled conclusively by arbcom, please. to the end of my request. –MJLTalk 03:37, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

I am unsure as to how appropriate it would be to urge you to reconsider your decision, so I won't. I just want you to know that I have faced near endless attacks on my character, and one of the few things keeping me together is that no one else will have to go through this process again.. That's really all I want. –MJLTalk 03:41, 22 August 2019 (UTC)
Also, on a completely unrelated note: Portal:Vancouver is up for deletion. –MJLTalk 04:05, 22 August 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the notice about the Portal:Vancouver. It has long since been inactive and was effectively serving as only a historical page.
As for the case request, a few others on the committee have expressed looking at Eric Corbett's conduct and conduct against Eric Corbett. Doing would cast an extremely wide net on everyone who has dealt with Eric Corbett or had any sort of dispute. It would effectively bring a lot of people into a case. I would prefer an approach requiring less disruption and intervention upon other people. In looking at Eric Corbett's current sanctions and restrictions, which would include the AE, ANI, and blocks, it would limit the depth of our inquiry. We would have a dozen or so instances to evaluate and see if everything is working as intended, or where the process has failed -- and then to explore remedies. I am not seeing enough support from others on the committee or from the community to pursue such a case. Mkdw talk 20:34, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

Accepting for different reasons

This appears to be a truly fascinating shot at the fact that a case can (and maybe will) be accepted with ill definition yet a majority of Arbs in favour (in their own way) of hearing a case. Is that what you were saying? The Rambling Man (Staying alive since 2005!) 20:06, 22 August 2019 (UTC)

I certainly accept that some arbitration cases proceed with a broad scope or one that may expand or contract as the case moves along. In those cases there should be a general consensus from the committee to do so, or the reasons for accepting the case on those terms should be reasonably similar.
On this particular case request, I support the argument that a wide open case would not be in the best interests of the individuals involved or the community. Looking at the effectiveness and sustainability of Eric Corbett's restrictions and sanctions, to identify if they are or are not working, is in my opinion our best option. As far as I can tell, few are suggesting the case should do so and I do not see a case with a different mission being practical or productive. Mkdw talk 20:25, 22 August 2019 (UTC)
"understanding the opinions" - will my opinion be heard? "petty restrictions never work for any good", just ask The Rambling Man. I doubt arbcom will listen. For two years now, I asked candidates if they can agree with Opabinia regalis. They say yes, I vote for them, they vote againt her, the only one repreenting me. Newyorkbrad used to hold that position before her. If you won't listen to me, and her, listen to him, perhaps? ("As you value your life or your reason keep away from the moor.") - Next question planned: please name one case of arbcom achieving something positive for the project. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:29, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
As I understood your question, you asked if candidates could agree with OR "here". Not for all time and always. I do not believe it serves the community to appoint individuals to the committee who will be a pocket vote for someone else, effectively undermining the very reason why ArbCom is a committee. There have been plenty of times where I have agreed with OR and voted in alignment, but I have done so each and every time based upon what I believe to be the right decision. I think that is all you can ask of anyone who offers to serve on the committee even if that means they may not vote how you would like them. Mkdw talk 17:13, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
Don't get me wrong. I asked in a specific case, but looked for the kind of thinking. Forgive me for voting only for candiates who I think will represent me ;) - This is the second request where a time sink could be avoided by a decline. Btw, while there may be a deadlock among arbs here, those users whom I respect the most all warned to take the case. Where I come from: when Kevin Gorman blocked Eric, I made him apologize. That is written much quicker than it was done. Right now, I have no time for such missionary work, because I want to write an article. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:34, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
