Etymology of Prague[edit]

Etymology of Prague is not (AFAIK) solved but I never saw relation to word burg. One possible root is Latin/Castilian fraga, a dry place with lot of shrubs. The name Fraga was used by an Arab traveller in second half of 10th century (article in Czech from popular science journal). Pavel Vozenilek 22:49, 16 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Burghs[edit]

Thanks for your work on the cities and royal burghs of Scotland. I had no idea that the suffix -burgh had Greek or Chaldean cognates.

That's because it doesn't. Adam 04:33, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You might like to know that when referring to words from specific languages, it is often helpful to link directly to the article on the language. For example, because "Greek language" means only one thing, the article Greek language talks about the language of Greece. However, the adjective "Greek" could, in various contexts, refer to the Greek language, the Greek people, Ancient Greece, or Greece in general. Thus, Greek is a Disambiguation page which has links to all of the possible meaning of the term. For this reason, it is often more helpful to link directly to the specific meaning of the term.

Sometimes, writing out the name of the link makes for awkward writing. A good way to get around this pitfall is to use piped links. For example, if you write out [[Greek language|Greek]] in the edit box, you get Greek. I find that this comes in handy an awful lot.

'bury[edit]

Please stop adding the same "bury" content to the start of so many articles - it's too long and detailed, not specific to the places concerned, and appears too soon in the articles. Note how I've edited Oldbury, West Midlands. Thank you. Andy Mabbett 21:24, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The same applys to "borough", with specific reference to Guisborough, I really don't think it is appropriate for the article's lead sections, I wasn't even sure if it should be included at all, with regards to the Guisborough page, I have moved the section to the talk page. Etymology of borough[edit]

Please stop adding this stuff to articles about "borough" being of Chaldean origin and having cognates in Semitic languages or Thai or whatever. I don't where you got this from, but it is complete nonsense. "Borough" is a Germanic word. It has been borrowed by other European languages such as French and Spanish, but it has no relations to non-European languages. I suppose it may be distantly related to the Greek pyrgos, but common origins of Indo-European words like this is pure speculation. Adam 04:33, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"well deserved", "richly deserved" etc. popularity[edit]

Please stop adding contextless claims that various names are "popular", and that they "deserve" or "well deserve" or "richly well deserve" that popularity. The claim that they are "popular" is meaningless without some sort of statistics to go with it, and the claim that they "deserve" that popularity is pure POV. Be happy![edit]

Don't let the above criticism get you down! There is a web page related to the US census which gives the poularity of the top 1000 christian names in the US over the last few decades, might be of interest to you. Rich Farmbrough 20:27, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Webster essay[edit]

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Summary of essay by Noah Webster: Connection of the Languages of Western Asia and of Europe, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree, discuss the issues raised at Talk:Summary of essay by Noah Webster: Connection of the Languages of Western Asia and of Europe. If you remove the {{dated prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. --Kjoonlee 13:02, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Euroroutes[edit]

Hiya. I appreciate all the work you're doing on expanding Euroroute-related info on UK roads and motorways, but I just want to emphasise that they are never signed in the UK, and as such putting the signs in the articles is probably misleading. I changed M8 motorway back myself, but I don't want to go reverting them all without at least sharing this feeling with you first. Erath 01:01, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I've found this conversation because I saw your edits on the M90 motorway. I drive a lot across Europe, and find the existence of the E routes in the UK interesting and ocassionally even helpful. Although the E routes are indeed not signed in the UK, I think it's reasonable for Wikipedia to make mention of them on UK road pages. But I take Erath's point that they could be misleading. So, I'd like to offer to help if there's any kind of effort to come up with a standard way of doing this. As a first suggestion, how about putting the E route in the "infobox" (at the end of the box) on UK road articles? – Kieran T (talk | contribs) 19:09, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd support that, adding them at the end. The info is interesting - I purposely kept it in my recent copyedit of the M8 motorway page. Erath 19:49, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I second that, not a bad idea. Keeno 19:53, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Graham Docherty[edit]

A tag has been placed on Graham Docherty requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Query[edit]

I know you haven't edited in a long time, but just in case you monitor this page or ever come back, I was interested in this edit you made in 2006, claiming that the A68 carries the E15. I don't think that this is correct. Where did you get this idea from? John (talk) 14:22, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
