Disambiguation link notification for August 4[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Daniel S. Goldman, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Robert Carroll. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Carrier Dome name change[edit]

Hi, in this edit by you at List of Syracuse University buildings article you update the name for what was formerly the Carrier Dome. It's a place that I have been, but I am not close now. I assume you are correct. Do you have a specific newspaper article or TV news story or other source that states the change, though? I will add back something like "formerly known as Carrier Dome". It would be nice if the change of name could be footnoted to a source though. Whether you can do that or not, thanks for contributing! --Doncram (talk) 06:13, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, sure thing. It was a pretty big news. Here's one: https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/33945806/syracuse-renames-iconic-dome-part-10-year-deal-jma-wireless
You can also check its updated Wikipedia page, JMA Wireless Dome, for reference. Cheers. Johnnycorns5354 (talk) 06:33, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, thank you for your prompt and informative reply. Sourcing can be in the dome's separate page, it doesn't need to be repeated in the list-article's table, I wasn't thinking of that. It does seem like quite a big deal. And I think it ought to be covered a bit better in the dome article, which I think just cites one source for that. And that source states important stuff which I think should be reflected in the article:

Carrier’s historic 1979 gift represented the first naming agreement for a major stadium in college sports, and one of the first in all of sports. More than four decades later, Carrier, whose support was instrumental in creating one of the most iconic and electric sports and events venues, has agreed to allow Syracuse to rename its stadium, effective May 1.

I might be wrong, but I don't think the dome article explains the naming being the first of its kind. And it is interesting to give some suggestion of the difficulty/awkwardness possible in a renaming, in that it was required or it was at least nice to get the Carrier Corp.'s agreement for their name to be retired. Why did they choose to do that, what have they stated, I wonder? Perhaps they might have stated they were glad to support the university by helping it to benefit from another large contribution. Or that they didn't need the stinkin' advertising anymore, or whatever. :)
Another thing I observe, is that the term was changed throughout the article, and there is perhaps too much confidence expressed in idea that it was formerly known as Carrier Dome. You cannot force people to change on a dime, and "Carrier Dome" may well continue to be used as a common name, or even the most common name for the place. I have seen other "official" name changes taken up too quickly for my taste, in other topic areas. In National Register of Historic Places listed properties, which is what I write mostly about, there is explicit guidance for nominators to use a long-standing, widely known name that is reflective of a place's period of greatest importance as the name chosen for the place, rather than accepting some not-generally known name that has just recently been announced. The first photo caption at least acknowledges the Carrier Dome name "JMA Wireless Dome (then known as the Carrier Dome) in 2021". Another later one is jarring to me, appears to me to be just wrong: "Football inside the JMA Wireless Dome before 2020 remodel". It simply was not the JMA Wireless Dome in that photo. "Football within what is now officially known as the JMA Wireless Dome, before the dome's 2020 remodel" would be technically okay though too wordy. "Football inside the Carrier Dome before 2020 remodel" would be fine, and better, IMO.
Anyhow I would encourage you to add the ESPN source which you found and maybe other sources, and cover a bit more about how this really is big news, and be a bit more sensitive to the fact that what people know it as, remains the "Carrier Dome" currently. We aren't here to promote the new sponsor. I leave it in your hands though. Thanks, --Doncram (talk) 06:57, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. Appreciate the information. Johnnycorns5354 (talk) 07:13, 30 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
