Why can't I edit some particular pages?

Some pages that have been vandalized repeatedly are semi-protected, meaning that editing by new or unregistered users is prohibited through technical measures. If you have an account that is four days old and has made at least 10 edits, then you can bypass semi-protection and edit any semi-protected page. Some pages, such as highly visible templates, are fully-protected, meaning that only administrators can edit them. If this is not the case, you may have been blocked or your IP address caught up in a range block.

Where can I experiment with editing Wikipedia?

Use the main sandbox or create your own personal sandbox to experiment.

How do I create an article?

See how to create your first article, then use the Article Wizard to create one, and add references to the article as explained below.

How do I create citations?

Do a search on Google or your preferred search engine for the subject of the Wikipedia article that you want to create a citation for.
Find a website that supports the claim you are trying to find a citation for.
In a new tab/window, go to the citation generator, click on the 'An arbitrary website' bubble, and fill out as many fields as you can about the website you just found.
Click the 'Get reference wiki text' button.
Highlight, and then copy (Ctrl+C or Apple+C), the resulting text (it will be something like <ref> {{cite web | .... }}</ref>, copy the whole thing).
In the Wikipedia article, after the claim you found a citation for, paste (Ctrl+V or Apple+V) the text you copied.
If the article does not have a References or Notes section (or the like), add this to the bottom of the page, but above the External Links section and the categories:

Page titles[edit]

Hello. You seem to have a habit of adding these double brackets [[ (which are intended to be used for links) to the page titles for some reason. Since linking from a page to itself doesn't work, and would serve no purpose if it did, I don't know what you hope to gain from this. It can lead to some strange situations, like with Orathanadu Taluk where the page links to a redirect page which links back to the page itself.

According to Manual of Style links should not be in the bold text of the title.

Indic script in article leads[edit]

I'm removing the script and circular links you've added and will apologize if I remove good changes you've made. You've touched a LOT of articles, and I'm not doing a full mass revert, just reverting changes that added script or the link, but that's still a very large number of articles. Hi! Good day to you. Here are the clarifications I wish to discuss; There are so many links to be considered important for which articles are available/ unavailable. Because of their non-availability, I try to include articles with separate main namespaces. As newcomers are not allowed to create new articles, sandbox was used by me for the same. Moreover, I have to wait for confirmations regarding edits or talk pages responses, I had included links with good intentions, that other readers or Wikipedians may also contribute articles related to particular links mentioned. The page name Draft:Sundararaja Perumal Temple, Agaram, Perambur may be appropriate, but first, make sure the temple itself is "notable" by Wikipedia standards, and see what the page names of other famous temples in the area are. If you continue to remove maintenance templates without resolving the problem that the template refers to, as you did at Kolathur, Chennai, you may be blocked from editing. When I accepted this article, I noted issues with the references. I accepted and tagged the draft because I intended that the issues could be fixed better in article space than in draft space, not because I was willing to have the maintenance tags erased. User:Nathan2055 also noted that there was too much detailed information. If there are multiple tags on an article, discussing them is a better idea than just removing them. Sources[edit]

Hi Helppublic, I noticed in a couple of the drafts you have created, that you have not added complete information in the sources.

If you use a newspaper article (for instance in The Hindu) as a source, and you add a URL in the source, it should be the URL that actually leads to that article, and not to the main page for the newspaper.
The same thing applies to all other URLs. In Kolathur, Chennai, the first reference in the list currently says "Census 2011 of India/District Census Handbook/Tamil Nadu/Chennai". Directorate of Census Operations, Tamil Nadu. Retrieved 14 October 2020. But the URL is just https://www.censusindia.gov.in, which is not a link to that source, it leads to the front page for that website.
Google Scholar is not a source, and should never be mentioned in the reference – neither listed as the "work" nor linked in a URL. An article you find in Google Scholar has to be properly referenced: the title is not enough, you also have to provide the journal it was published in, the year, usually the issue, the page numbers, and the names of the authors. If you include a DOI it is possible to link to the article online as well.
Google Books is also not a source, and should not be listed as a "work". It is also unnecessary to include a URL to Google Books if you include an ISBN number in the citation template, but if you do have a GBooks URL it has to point at the actual book. Editing neighbourhood articles[edit]

Dear Helppublic. Thank you so much for your tireless contributions. You're indeed helping public gain access to knowledge on various topics by creating and editing Wiki articles. :) Just wanted to give you some suggestions while editing neighbourhood articles at this moment. I see you keep adding information as lists, adding more and more bulleted items without any source. Per Wikipedia's rule of WP:NOTDIR, we normally avoid this. The article has to be encyclopedic: that is, facts must be given with sources (for every claim) and must be presented in a logically flowing train of thoughts (e.g., in paragraphs). Lists, tables, and so forth are allowed intermittently as required, but presenting the whole article in list format will make the article look like a directory, which Wikipedia is not (see WP:NOTDIR). Going through the basic rules of Wikipedia would help to a great extent (please see the welcome message that I added at the beginning of this page). One easy way of understanding this is reading similar neighbourhood articles of good quality to see how they are written. This way, we'll get an idea of what's missing in the article on hand. For example, please see the article South Side, Chicago. It's about a neighbourhood of Chicago (similar to Royapettah in Chennai). Ultimately, we should aim to bring our Royapettah and other neighbourhood articles to somewhat match the South Side article in content and quality. Hope this gives you a good start.
