Precious five years![edit]

Precious
Five years!

--Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:18, 25 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Gerda, I am indeed precious, but why for only five years? Giano (talk) 16:25, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back, Excellency! It is indeed certain that you have been precious for much more than five years, but Gerda has only been handing out the "Precious Award" for that period of time. --RexxS (talk) 01:24, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
RexxS said it better than I could, as so often. Sorry for having noticed your awesomeness only that late, expressed on a Christmas Day! - Today, we sing for Good Friday, and my DYK #1000 is on the Main page, - I don't know which because there are 2, and one is quirky ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:18, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I missed you both hiding up here. Thank you for your kind words. I am indeed back - non too soon by the looks of things! Turn one's back for five moments, and info boxes and take over the world. Giano (talk) 17:49, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you inserted here, that it was no more legal to fortify a domestic dwelling. What do you exactly mean? I mean: Its still allowed to build a fence or wall around a house. --Zulu55 (talk) 10:56, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A garden fence or wall is not really a fortification, is it? Fortification rather implies ramparts, crenelations and pouring boiling oil on the neighbors (an admirable pastime in suburbia) - think fort. Anyway, the British may well have rescinded that law by now and now and permit frying the neighbors. Giano (talk) 19:45, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Giano, I am buffing the article on Ficus macrophylla, and it seems to be popular in parts of Italy. Someone had added about there being specimens in several parks in Liguria (Bordighera and Sanremo). Looking for material I found this and wondered the source had anything else interesting or unusual to say (am trying to avoid the section being listy!)...aaaand I don't speak any Italian so need someone who could catch the nuances that google translate often misses....cheers, Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 01:40, 20 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I seem to be unable to follow the link - all I have is "You have either reached a page that is unavailable or reached the viewing limit for this book." Anyway, are you sure we have Australian banyans in Italy? While trying to find out, I did find this, but still didn't answer my question, which seems to prove Italians become more stereotyped in Australia than they are in Italy; and also this which was clearly written by an Australian, as anyone who has ever had a headache from a single glass of Australian Chardonnay will know. Anyway my research did uncover this for you, where Banyans are sacred in India and Pakistan, and also meeting and resting places for those few Indians who are not riding around on the roofs of trains, creating traffic jams in Kolkata or single-handedly running the National Health Service in England. Otherwise I don't think I can help unless you can find a better link. Giano (talk) 16:24, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sigh...google books is somewhat capricious as to which pages it shows you in which country. Doesn't matter so much now. For the record, here they are in Sicily after a 19th century botanist got really excited for them....just like here in Oz. My wife is half italian and has a whole horde of italian relatives so some of those links are quite funny...Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 10:32, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
What makes you think I was attempting humour? We have all these lovely relations because we are forbidden birth control, that’s not amusing I assure you and puts us in the same class as all those ridiculous, nauseating bible belting Americans currently demanding their right to the 2nd Ammendment so that they can, allegedly, form a militia and go around shooting each other and multiplying adnauseum. Making America’s lack of sensible gun laws an ongoing perpetual problem. Giano (talk) 19:28, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I know - I had a small win pointing out to my American cousins the other day about our big changes after a 1996 massacre in Tasmania. We had a conservative prime minister who massively tightened the gun laws. My cousins were surprised. Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 21:09, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have just had another three months in the Land of the Free and it is quite extraordinary, one is talking to a person who appears to be quite normal, and then they say something and you realise they have the mentality of a gun obsessed bog peasant; it’s an odd sort of freedom that is only secured by having one’s home full of semi-automatic guns. Most peculiar, because I love America and the mostly friendly natives, but it didn’t feel quite right this time. They need to get out more I think, too provincial. Probably Trump’s fault I expect. Giano (talk) 21:25, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It also depends where in the country you are. Like liberal godless havens like the Pacific northwest and New England..I have not been there for many years though. Since 1995 I think...Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 00:37, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's the most worrying thing, I was finding these rich bog peasants in Greenwich, Connecticut fresh from their holiday homes at Palm Beach, where they all belong to Mar-a-Lago. Very concerning; If one must have Republicanism, I yearn to see a return to that more old fashioned, but more well bred form, as defined by the first George Bush. Inciting, exiting and playing to the peasants may be all well and good for votes at first, but it usually has a horrible way of ending. Mind you, the British are no better, having voted to leave Europe and thus creating a power vacuum and political situation akin to Germany in the 1920s, they are throwing up their hands in horror at rampant left wing nationalism, anti-semitism and Mr Corbyn surrounded by hard-Left thugs and his horrible Momentum rabble. All looks horribly familiar doesn't it. One despairs for the world, one really does.Giano (talk) 17:47, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Great to see you back anyway, Giano. Johnbod (talk) 18:02, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you; It is very nice to be back. I don’t care for this new long winded save edit business though. Had I wanted to be a publisher, I would have become one. Giano (talk) 19:23, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia takes most things "very seriously", whereas I do not. However, I am seriously wondering which part of "(Giano (talk)) created this work entirely by myself." you are having a problem comprehending? Giano (talk) 16:36, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
What sort of licence you release it under (CC, PD, Etc.), not particularly serious, but necessary... --kelapstick(bainuu) 17:01, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Don't think they actually read anything, it's all automated - they just want the right box ticked. Johnbod (talk) 17:34, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ah Johnbod, nice to see you. Have you noticed, that some people are very tiresome? Giano (talk) 17:59, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Most certainly! If I knew which bit of code to add, I'd say, but it's a bit complicated for me. I suppose {{GFDL}} would work. Johnbod (talk) 18:07, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've declined the {{Di-no license}}, Excellency, and added {{CC-BY-SA 3.0}} as requested to keep the bot away. --RexxS (talk) 19:29, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you that’s very kind. I really must get round to finishing that 3D plan soon, as some small compensation for those wanting infoboxes there, but after annotating room 354 and there are still dozens to go, one rather loses the will to live. Giano (talk) 21:01, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for this. Please rest assured that I not only read your authorship statement, but I also read through some of your extensive issues on Commons that you have linked from your user page, and determined that you are a good-faith editor, but you fall into a category of editors that I personally do not have the skills to interact with, so I fell back to following the process and left you the message above. I now see that perhaps this was a mistake. I find copyright very tiresome as well, but as you likely know, our readers and reusers need this legal surety, and presumably supporting them is what this is all about? Thank you for your contributions and sorry to get off on the wrong foot. TheDragonFire (talk) 12:17, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Giano, when you uploaded File:G'sPB8.jpg, you did not add a copyright tag to it. Could you please add {{PD-self}} or another suitable copyright tag to it? --B (talk) 15:44, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@B: A {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} tag has been added. Please let His Excellency know if there are any further problems. --RexxS (talk) 20:30, 22 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Avetik Chalabyan article up for deletion[edit]

Hi Giano! About 2 years ago I wrote a biography of a living person article [Chalabyan]. The article has been recently marked as up for deletion. Any advice on why this might be happening, how to address it or what to improve would really be appreciated. Obviously, your vote as an experienced editor on Wiki would really go a long way to make sure it's not deleted.

Thanks in advance for your attention to the matter.

Alice Ananian (talk) 14:17, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

As a long serving editor, my advice is stick to writing about the dead. They never sue and seldom complain. Giano (talk) 20:48, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Use this one instead. --RexxS (talk) 20:23, 27 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Re your note here: I agree, and have listed the article at AfD. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Oliver Rothschild Bishonen | talk 22:08, 19 November 2018 (UTC).[reply]

Thank you that’s very kind. Probably posted in the wrong page, but one can’t see anything on this silly little screen and stupid keyboard. Can’t wait to. E. Ack home with my nice big old proper computer. Giano (talk) 19:40, 20 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I know what you mean. I've long since given up trying to do anything Wikipedia-related on fussy little touchscreens. Bishonen | talk 19:51, 20 November 2018 (UTC).[reply]

ArbCom 2018 election voter message[edit]

Hello, Giano. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, but I have no wish to participate at all. I doubt I will have even heard of most of them. Giano (talk) 19:41, 20 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I will vote as I see the ghastly Fred Baudelaire wants to rise from the tomb. There can’t be that many of us left who remember his last spell on the Arbcom. As if that wasn’t bad enough I seem to remember once seeing a photo of him with a beard. I don’t trust people with beards and always wonder why they grew it. Giano (talk) 19:56, 20 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think his candidacy went down in flames already. Edit war, wheel war and desysop. It was the usual thing that seems to happen to some candidate every year. Jehochman Talk 22:29, 20 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good! Giano (talk) 18:23, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Austral season's greetings
Tuck into this! We've made about three of these in the last few days for various festivities. Supermarkets are stuffed with cheap berries. Season's greetings! Cas Liber (talk · contribs) 22:34, 24 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
