Hey GTB. Welcome and such to wikipedia - let me know if you've got any questions, and I'll try and point you at the right page. Have fun... :) -Martin

Well, let's see.... is this how I reply? Thanks for the welcome! I expect I'll have some fun here. GTBacchus 17:27 Jan 6, 2003 (UTC)

Looks like there's a bunch of us coming here since Gnomon's entry. See y'all around! Theanthrope 18:08 Jan 6, 2003 (UTC)

Yeah, it's different though, isn't it? It's much easier to get something written and linked up, but I'm sorry not to have PR, to find out what people think of what I've written. I wrote a squonks entry, based on what I'd learned from writing my h2g2 one, and I think it's in good Wikipedia style, but how can I tell for sure?

GTBacchus 04:32 Jan 7, 2003 (UTC)

One way you can find out is whether other people radically edit the entry :) Seriously, the policy pages should give a fairly comprehensive outline of the important guidelines. By far the most important is the neutral point of view policy. --Robert Merkel 04:58 Jan 7, 2003 (UTC)
looks good to me, but what do I know? But certainly "silence signifies consent" a good deal - whenever I've done stuff wrong I found out soon enough... :) -Martin

The Humungous Image Tagging Project[edit]

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Chic Young[edit]

It's funny how usage changes over the years. During the 1920s, for example, George Herman Ruth was called "Babe" Ruth in the press much of the time, to reinforce the fact that it was a nickname. Nowadays, conventional usage is either Babe Ruth or George Herman "Babe" Ruth or maybe George Herman ("Babe") Ruth, but not "Babe" Ruth. So also with Chic Young.  :) Wahkeenah 4 July 2005 20:48 (UTC)

Thank you[edit]

capike[edit]

Hi, I see you left me a message but I do not understand it. Is there something else I am supposed to do for the Uniterran Church article?

Capike 23:29, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm not aware that I left you a message. I made some edits to the Uniterran Church article, but those weren't directed at anyone in particular. You can expect any contribution to Wikipedia to be edited repeatedly by anyone who comes along. If you add an article to your Watchlist, then you can keep track of those edits and correct any errors that may enter the article that way. Wikipedia's not like other websites though, where you post your work and it remains static. Your article will grow and change as more contributions are made; that's how Wikipedia works.
Welcome to Wikipedia - I'm happy to answer any questions you have about the site. GTBacchus 01:04, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the +cats. Strange that this article didn't already exist.

But I was wondering, do you think it really belongs in Category:Distribution, retailing, and wholesaling? Because it is already in the subcategory Category:Food retailing. Seems a bit redundant. Dforest 07:02, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You may be right about that. I just lifted the categories that I saw at Supermarket (where they're also a bit redundant) and at Whole Foods Market that seemed to match. I wouldn't object to pruning. And yes, it does seem odd that there was nothing on Health food store yet. Food retailing isn't really a well-developed area in Wikipedia yet, it seems. Compared with, say, Nintendo characters... Stub sorting[edit]

Thank you! I should have thought of that category myself, somehow I didn't. Andrewa 19:02, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Math markup[edit]

There is a way to force a TeX equation (math tag markup) to be rendered as a PNG (I think it involves backslashes and commas), but then we run into issues of server job load, bandwidth, etc. Though on the other hand, individual users can set preferences for how they want TeX markup to be displayed on their computers. Maybe I was a bit hasty when it came to the dating and did undo your wikifying. I'm sorry for that, but I honestly thought that I'd made the dating consistent. Can you show me the line that isn't consistent. Thank you, Chooserr

Also I would like to thank you for your help with the U.S. measurements. I was trying my best to make it accessible for everyone, and your edits were very helpful. Chooserr 00:22, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The war on Christmas is such a mess I gave up looking at it on a common basis. It seems to me that people are trying to be so PC and not offend eachother that they put everything in quotes. But one thing that should be added is that the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights is upset about the Whitehouse Holiday Card. The link, if you're interested, is the one in the Christmas Bracelets' frame...Chooserr 00:34, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It would probably be the same Village Pump daughter where WP:WSS/P is currently being discussed. But afaik, this issue has already been debated. I don't know if they are very keen on having this brought up again. Aecis praatpaal 00:28, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Date formats[edit]

My personal philosophy is to stay out of it, yes :). You're right that it is terribly trivial, but I think you could renew discussion if you wanted to. Start at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy) and see what reactions you get. I'm sure that they're will be several people who will say "Always BC!" or "Always BCE!", and so forth, but that's why it is good to compromise. I just wanted to drop in here and let you know that despite the trivial nature of that topic, I appreciate your work in having it settled in the context of Wikipedia. I, like most interested parties, am too biased to do or say much which could be construed as neutral and fair. Your role is valuable. Your Wikithoughts[edit]

I've taken a look at your Wikithoughts as you asked. I'm afraid I don't really agree that Wikipedia isn't an encyclopedia, or that it won't be one. It is and always will be an encyclopedia; it will just be a very special kind of encyclopedia, one that must perhaps be approached on some subjects with more caution than a traditional peer-reviewed encyclopedia, but it's an encyclopedia nonetheless. As soon as it no longer fits the definition of an encyclopedia, it will no longer be Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia.

I've put up the first of my thoughts on my user page, by the way. You might want to take a look and comment or edit. —Simetrical (talk) 07:19, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You are now an administrator[edit]

Congrats! Your request for adminship passed with 41 supports to 1 oppose, which is equal to a 97.6% support to oppose ratio. As such, I have promoted you to administrator, which means you now have access to several neat administrative, cleanup and upkeep tools at your disposal.

As a new administrator, you should read relevant policies and pages linked to the administrators' reading list before you carry out tasks such as blocking users, deleting and protecting pages, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Remember that most of what you will be doing will be easily reverted by other admins, apart from page moves and image deletion. I personally suggest reading the administrators' how-to guide in order to learn some of the ropes. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to ask me for help. Welcome to adminship! Oho? Is that so. I wasn't aware that War on Christmas was an accepted term/official name as opposed to say, ID. IF that is consensus however, I will bow to it. Respond quickly please--Tznkai 23:33, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, we have several articles on notable terms, see Xmas for a quick and relevant example. If this is accurate however, I can insert this sentance:

"Both groups have accepted the use of the term "War on Christmas", whether or not they accept that the war itself exists" Then the article can focus on the supposed campaign and the contraversy instead of the term.--Tznkai 23:38, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Tried a fix, hopefully it will work. Gonna finish clean up and then release the article (hopefully)--Tznkai 23:49, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The word Alleged isn't unecyclopedic. It was its usage. "Alleged Specific". It sounds startlingly like an Oxymoron. Chooserr 23:43, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

agreed.--Tznkai 23:49, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, "alleged specific" is no good; true. What about "specific allegations", seeing as that's what they are, and some of them (i.e., Plano schools) are manifestly NOT instances of secularization, seeing as they never happened, although the allegation did? -GTBacchus(talk) 23:52, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Chooserr's Block[edit]

I see that you're looking in to the latest Chooserr block, so I'll take the initiative and drop you a line. I think that Chooserr's block log makes for very interesting reading. Basically, since User:Chooserr has arrived, he has engaged in disruptive behavior nearly everywhere he has gone. Compared to that, I'd like you to consider the thousands upon thousands of people who manage to be constructive, frequently contributing editors and who manage not to run afoul of nearly every policy we have. He has had a huge number of second chances here, and he consistently manages to find a new boundary of civility and disruption to push. To top it off, after this block was in in place, he claimed to not understand how "I don't think you are practicing your religion correctly" (I paraphrase) is offensive. He is clearly trolling, and I urge you to seriously consider the message you will be sending if you reduce or lift this, his seventh block in a month.

Kind regards, Nandesuka 00:44, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, GTBacchus. This is a copy for you of a message I have just posted on Nandesuka's talk page:
I agree fully with GTBacchus, especially about the browbeating that Chooserr has received. I'm not keen on implementing punitive blocks, but I will point out that nobody seems to have thought it was necessary to block people who were following him around Wikipedia, calling him a "mindless troll", etc. I've already left a message on his talk page about this matter; you may have seen it.[1] I'm not going to try to overrule you, but I think you need to take into account the way he has been treated. He has been reverted with snide remarks when reverting wasn't at all necessary (and I admit it often is necessary). He has been sneered at, harassed, and followed round Wikipedia. I hope you will consider reducing this block. Cheers. AnnH (talk) 01:21, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the very thoughtful post you made on WP:AN/I. While I agree that Chooserr's remark was completely inappropriate, it's very nice to see another administrator trying to be fair, especially since you disagree with him about a lot. I can tell that post must have cost a fair bit of your time, too. If I weren't so busy I'd go hunting for a suitable barnstar, but I'm not very experienced in giving them. Maybe when I've finished my assignments! And by the way, I fully support the idea of reducing the block to four days. You may have noticed that he allowed me to remove from his user page the list of Wikipedians that he's watching. Sorry for spelling your name incorrectly above. I've corrected it. Cheers, AnnH (talk) 10:47, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding "my" semicolon box — absolutely. I'm sure you realize that nothing is "mine" on Wikipedia. In fact, I stole some of my boxes (and then modified them) from other users. Anyway, you're more than welcome to use it, or (in case I ever modify the colour to one you don't like) to create a User:GTBacchus/semi box and paste the whole source of User:Musical Linguist/semi into it. I envy you having a Latin box by the way. I hope to add one in the next few years, and to change my German 1 to German 2. AnnH (talk) 11:26, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
