Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • Partial blocks is now available for testing on the Test Wikipedia. The new functionality allows you to block users from editing specific pages. Bugs may exist and can be reported on the local talk page or on Meta. A discussion regarding deployment to English Wikipedia will be started by community liaisons sometime in the near future.
  • A user script is now available to quickly review unblock requests.
  • The 2019 Community Wishlist Survey is now accepting new proposals until November 11, 2018. The results of this survey will determine what software the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Tech team will work on next year. Voting on the proposals will take place from November 16 to November 30, 2018. Specifically, there is a proposal category for admins and stewards that may be of interest.

Arbitration

  • Eligible editors will be invited to nominate themselves as candidates in the 2018 Arbitration Committee Elections starting on November 4 until November 13. Voting will begin on November 19 and last until December 2.
  • The Arbitration Committee's email address has changed to arbcom-en@wikimedia.org. Other email lists, such as functionaries-en and clerks-l, remain unchanged.

Hi Afeez, the reason why the page has been nominated is not because it questions your level of professionalism or that of your club but because notability guidelines require either a player to pay in a league where all clubs are fully professional (a list of confirmed leagues can be found here) or where the player has received significant coverage in a number of third party sources per WP:GNG. The article has not yet been deleted and is being discussed here. You are welcome to take part and if you can provide links to sources either discussing your career in detail or interviews with yourself then this will help support your case. Well, very soon, some significant changes will be made to this page to reflect new research. I won't change it personally because the editor here will only change it back to its original form. I have wasted too much time changing other pages to make them accurate, without success. ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Fenix down. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, the Mediation Committee is now closed and will no longer be accepting case requests.
  • A request for comment is in progress to determine whether members of the Bot Approvals Group should satisfy activity requirements in order to remain in that role.
  • A request for comment is in progress regarding whether to change the administrator inactivity policy, such that administrators "who have made no logged administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped". Currently, the policy states that administrators "who have made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least 12 months may be desysopped".
  • A proposal has been made to temporarily restrict editing of the Main Page to interface administrators in order to mitigate the impact of compromised accounts.

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Hi, sorry for the late reply, not been editing much recently. Not sure I can protect the page at the moment as the changes being made are to an unreferenced section. Can you add a source that confirms the squad and ensure that the article matches the source? No, I have currently no source to the squad as it`s between seasons and in the middle of a transferwindow. The idiot(s) who edits the squad again and again are adding players that certainly not will join the club, and removing others who are not leaving. The page has been protected 4 times already in the last month and a half, but as soon as the protection is removed they are back. Registered users are adding/removing real changes to the squad, while the ones with only IP-addresses vandalise the squad. You protected the page a few weeks ago for the same reason, so don`t see any difference now. SveinFalk (talk) 10:04, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Hashtag United

Hey, around late August you participated in a discussion t delete Hashtag United's season page. The page ended up being deleted. You mentioned that if they had good coverage and this season was notable then a new discussion could be created. They are currently third in their league. (4 points from first) and a wikipedia page would be the only source for updated fixtures. I think a page should be created. What do you think? IsraeliIdan (talk) 07:12, 10 December 2018 (UTC)

If a Wikipedia page would be the only source for updated fixtures, then that suggests the season is not getting that much coverage, surely? Can you cite any sources that discuss the season to date? There would need to be multiple third party sources per GNG discussing the season and this would need to go further than individual, routine match reporting. Their Twitter and their own league's website are unfortunately not independent sources. WP:GNG requires, that a topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, it is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list. Neither of these would be independent of the subject. Additionally, simple match reporting, league tables and tweets would be merely routine regardless of whether the sources are independent of the subject. The season itself would need to get specific, significant, third party coverage. This would take the form of articles discusisng in detail the progress of the team, not just a synthesis of individual match reports. I know the team itself is notable and is mentioned widely despite their low level. This doesn't mean however that individual seasons are notable unfortunately. The best I would recommend is a short summary in the club article, but this should be no more than a paragraph or so and shouldn't contain any lerague or results tables. Fenix down (talk)

It doesn't cover world cup futsal players in the same way that it doesn't cover world cup beach soccer. NFOOTY is strictly for the 11 a side version and not any of its varients. I'm afraid your wrong. Here are some examples confirming it is not not covered by NFOOTY covering a period of years with numerous statements from editors confirming NFOOTY does not cover futsal: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11],[12],[13]. It is quite clear from this consensus that playing internationally or at the Fifa futsal world cup is not notable per NFOOTY. Furthermore, futsal has never been part of the Olympic games so that's nor relevant. I'm not saying I'm the best admin by a long stretch, but one of the things that at least makes me a reasonable admin is I try to back up my statements with research and links to consensus rather than snide personal attacks. Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

NSEASONS

Hi, I'm a little confused as to why you removed the PROD from 2018–19 Saif Sporting Club season because there is no requirement for a season to be fully professional, yet at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2017–18 Leyton Orient F.C. season you state the exact opposite in your delete vote? Has there been a change in consensus since then? Kosack (talk) 19:54, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

The arguments are similar but different. The AfD you noted above illustrates the consensus that in the English pyramid a "top professional league" is a fully professional one, I.e. although the national league is professional it is to low down the pyramid to be considered a "top professional league". I do not interpret that consensus to have global implications. In this instance, discussions at WT:FPL clearly indicated a strong level of professionalism in this competition. As such I feel it is perfectly reasonable, as Bangladesh's top league, for it to be considered a "top professional league". Hope that is clear. Fenix down (talk) 21:45, 1 January 2019 (UTC)
Well in the last month alone both The New Saints and Flora Tallinn have had top level seasons deleted, again for the same reason and both probably have more claim to being professional. WP:NSEASONS does say a professional league, not a league with a degree of professionalism which doesn't seem to provide any obvious ambiguity. Kosack (talk) 07:42, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
I would challenge that, both of those leagues are more likely semi professional. The mistake you are making is saying that professional and "fully professional" are the same thing, when they are not. Nseasons does not require fully professional status. Fenix down (talk) 08:16, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
There appears to be an obvious consensus that it does. At the TNS deletion Number 57, when referencing previous AfDs, comments "where it is agreed that there is clear consensus that when applied to football, NSEASONS requires a league to be fully-professional." Don't delete pages as "expired prod" when the prod was removed

You deleted a page with the reason that its prod had expired when its prod tag had been removed. Do not do that. The next step is to propose it for deletion through the AfD or RfD process. -- JHunterJ (talk) 18:57, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

Sorry about that, I received thanks for the prod. I clicked on the thanks and it took me to the page where the tag showed it had been more than 7 days. I didn't realise that was an old version not the current version and that the prod had been removed. I'm happy for redirect to remain, although I would challenge whether an English language redirect is most appropriate for lusophone derbies, but it's a plausible search term. Guideline and policy news

  • A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
  • Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

Technical news

  • A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

Miscellaneous

  • Voting in the 2019 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2019, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2019, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
  • A new IRC bot is available that allows you to subscribe to notifications when specific filters are tripped. This requires that your IRC handle be identified.

Just wanted to say the closure of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Clarence Bijl is very interesting and the one I personally very much agree with (and again reinforces the fact NFOOTY standards has to be higher but sadly the proposal few days ago failed completely), but I feel someone will go for deletion review here and blame you for WP:SUPERVOTE for straining out whole 9 Keep votes instead of no consensus situation) and it will be messy. I did see majority of the Keep voters violated WP:JUSTAPOLICY and or WP:THEREMUSTBESOURCES (I counted at least 6 of those). Hi Johan, I fully expect DRV from this given the number of people that voted keep, but I chose to be bold and close based on the strength of the arguments. NFOOTY only presumes GNG, and as I noted in my closing rationale when the keep votes trying to indicate GNG actually show the exact opposite that massively impacted the strength of the arguments. To be honest I'm torn about the wider NFOOTY appropriateness argument. On the one hand it provides a clear cut off that is easily interpreted, whilst on the other I could not in all good conscience close the AfD as keep based on 16 minutes of fully professional football and a few brief mentions. If someone had been able to cite even one interview with the player of any length I might have thought differently. We'll see what happens, maybe it will jump start a conversation, maybe it won't. We will see I guess. I had an alternative proposal in my mind based on WP:NACTOR. 1 match in a professional league can stay, but a player to do that for multiple teams (so two or more). @Jovanmilic97: It's going to be landslide rejected as football editors remain steadfast against any change whatsoever, but it's worth a shot - nothing to lose! I thought my "90 minutes" proposal quite reasonable since a lot of the AfDs are about players with one substitute appearance, but even that was shot down. SportingFlyer Thanks for being really honest with me. Probably won't considering things all around. I mean there is a reason why 99,99 percent of these footballers AfDs are filled with votes that violate WP:JUSTAPOLICY and it is actually sad. But what can we do. Wikipedia operates on users consensus, football is a popular sport, too many biased fans (and yes, I am assuming WP:AGF but you can edit thinking to contribute to Wiki but still be biased). heh, I just saw the close and wondered what people might say about it, I think Fenix close is perfectly justified. I kind of went with a weak keep because the player was young and there were a couple of citations. I don't think NFooty needs changing at all, I just feel that people need to abide by GNG stronger over NFooty. Govvy (talk) 16:26, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
Sorry, meant to reply to this earlier. What Govvy is saying is exactly what needs to happen. Yes NFOOTY is a presumption of notability but if we go to GNG then that needs to be substantiated. One of the problems with AfD is that it is easy to end up with the same people opining on articles within the same subject, that then becomes consensus through results and people forget about GNG. There's a lot of non notable footballer articles out there and I certainly don't want to start a mass deletion, but as a project we need to get away from NFOOTY being the be all and end all and focus on GNG. I'd expect there to be a minimum of one independent, substantial interview noticeable for all current footballers in FPLs to support GNG. Fenix down (talk) 18:04, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Sport_Complex_Podillya

This was a particularly odd nomination, basically that it was short and unsourced. I've since found a few good sources (I searched Podillya Stadion and not its name) and can turn this into at least a good stub article, like: [14] and [15] & [16] (on the stadium renovation), [17] (on the pitch work and the fact it hosts rugby matches.) In principle no, but perhaps it would be best to build out in the club article first and the fork if necessary. I can't really tell what is in the sources myself but They are all pretty short, so I'm not convinced they would satisfy WP:GEOFEAT simply because there are a few sources about renovation and a brief mention that they also host rugby matches. The stadium's been used by several teams over the years including FC Temp Shepetivka (who won the 1991 USSR Ukrainian version of the FA Vase at the stadium.) I understand in terms of forking, but multiple targets exist, and I do not think that article would have been deleted on WP:GEOFEAT grounds, even as a stub. Sorry for the delay. Given that most of the sources cover the refurbishment i would suggest this was still a bit routine. Personally i wouldnt vote keep based on the content as is.
