Pictures - Commons?[edit]

  • Hi I thought I would also add that I am enjoying the pictures you uploaded, for example: . I have a similar camera to yours, an Olympus C-740UZ (an older model I guess from the numbering). I upload most of my pictures to the related project Wikimedia Commons, that way they can be shared across other wikimedia projects, eg foreign language versions of wikipedia. If you want more info about Commons, feel free to ask. You can use the photo direct from commons, no special prefixes are required. The essential thing is probably to categorise your image so others can find it. Regards--Golden Wattle talk 20:21, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Deletion[edit]

Just a note: if you are the author of an image, and you want it removed, tag it with {{db-author}} and it should be removed in short order. Ed Fitzgerald (unfutz) (talk / cont) 13:05, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hoddle Grid[edit]

Hi Donald,

why are you changing my photo?

User: Vincentshia —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.105.235.47 (talk) 13:46, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vincentshia

Wikipedia is a free editable website. I may not be able to understand your message. My purpose is trying to upload the Image:MelbCBD.jpg , which has a broader and clear view of the Hoddle Grid to the viewers of the free encyclopedia. Now I have uploaded Image:MelbCBD.jpg into the article of Melbourne again but it seems there is a sort of the duplication of the image for the Wikipedia project of Melbourne. Your comments will be welcome Regards --Donaldtong (talk) 15:38, 9 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Donald. You've got some great photos here on Wikipedia, but it would be great if we could keep my photo of the CBD. Do you have a website for your photos? --Vincentshia (talk) 13:25, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vincentshia and Donald - I have come to this talk page in response to another question by Donald (answered below) but thought I would add my two cents here. In response to "keep my photo" and other discussion points, I suggest you take the issue to the talk page of the article and note the policy of Wikipedia:Ownership of articles which deals with Some contributors feel very possessive about material (be it categories, templates, articles, images, essays, or portals) that they have contributed to this project. Some go so far as to defend them against all others. It is one thing to take an interest in an article that you maintain on your watchlist. Maybe you really are an expert or you just care about the topic. But if this watchfulness starts to become possessiveness, then you may be overdoing it. The policy notes it is "important to respect the work of your fellow contributors". Neither photo of the CBD will be deleted unless it breaches copyright policy or similar. It is probably not appropriate to use two images of the same subject in an article and hence my suggestion to resolve the matter on the talk page of the article involving othr editors. --Matilda talk 22:23, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image use questions[edit]

Hi Donald You asked me: Are there guidelines in Wikipedia answering questions such as;

  • How many images can be added within an article?
  • There is no limit to the number of pictures that can be added to an article but as per Wikipedia:Image use policy#Image queuing - "Articles may get ugly and difficult to read if there are too many images crammed onto a page with relatively little text. They may even overlap." If the text is not balanced by the number of images you would need to have a very strong sense that all the images were necessary to the topic of the article.
  • How to justify by saying that an article is not a gallery?
  • What is the criteria to judge an image whether it is relevant or informative to the article?
  • Guidelines concerning images can be found at Wikipedia:Images - particularly the section on Pertinence and encyclopedicity seems relevant: "Images must be relevant to the article they appear in and be significant relative to the article's topic." They need to be specific and should be properly sourced and referenced.

Hope this helps - I am happy to follow up n any specific questions you might have. regards --Matilda talk 22:17, 20 April 2008 (UTC) (formerly known as Golden Wattle)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Image:Port Melbourne Esplanade.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I8 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is available as a bit-for-bit identical copy on the Wikimedia Commons under the same name, or all references to the image on Wikipedia have been updated to point to the title used at Commons.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on [[ Talk:Image:Port Melbourne Esplanade.jpg|the talk page]] explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. Sdrtirs (talk) 22:09, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sdrtirs

I am the original author of Image:Port Melbourne Foreshore Near The Port Melbourne Yacht Club.jpg and Image:Port Melbourne Bayside Foreshore Promenade.jpg. I just have found you left the message in my talk page on 17/08/08. Please delete the Image:Port Melbourne Esplanade.jpg and Image:Port Melbourne Promenade.jpg you identified. So far I have no idea why the user Commons:User:File Upload Bot Magnus Manskewho duplicated my images I contributed to the Wikimedia Commons and placed these two duplications in Wikipedia. Thanks--Donaldtong (talk) 14:16, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

NowCommons: Image:Ac.stpats4.JPG[edit]

Image:Ac.stpats4.JPG is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:Image:St Patricks Cathedral Entrance Gate.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[Image:St Patricks Cathedral Entrance Gate.jpg]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. This bot did not copy the image itself. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 23:15, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:Erika Marozsán.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:Erika Marozsán.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Image of Burj Khalifa[edit]

Sorry, but I have removed your image of the Burj Khalifa from List of tallest buildings in the world and List of tallest buildings in Dubai. It is a fine image but unfortunately UAE does not have a Freedom of Panorama law compatible with the image storage in Commons. However, even if the image was stored in en.Wikipedia under a claim of fair use, we still wouldn't be allowed to place that image in galleries and "list of..." articles due to the need to keep usage to a minimum. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
