Questions and answers

Hello! I saw you were a new user and thought I'd drop by and say hey! I like your idea for a Questions and answers page - in fact, Wikipedia already has something like that. Check out the Reference desk! Feel free to ask questions and answer anything that shows up on that page. Just to avoid duplication, I'm going to request that the extra Q&A page is removed. Hope this helps, and welcome to Wikipedia! If you need anything, please feel free to leave me a message :-) --HappyCamper 22:59, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

Hey, no worries :) If you need any help finding your way around Wikipedia, just let me know and I'll try to help you out, or point you in the right direction. It's always nice to have newcomers to the project! :) --HappyCamper 23:29, 5 August 2005 (UTC)

redirect

Just a word of advice, if you redirect a page, put in the summery redirect or something like that. Else when you remove 2000 chars of info from a page, it appears that you are a vandal.(of which you are not)Eagle (talk) (desk) 23:36, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

You put me onto it. :) I am not at all convinced that everyone will agree with your positive comment about that little oddity, but we'll see. I like stuff like that, whereas others find it "unencylopedic", which I translate to mean "it's not boring enough." :) Wahkeenah 18:23, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

HaH!

So I'm not the only who got the idea of using a wiki as a webpage! 68.39.174.238 01:03, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Fair use image in user namespace

Hello!

You have used a fair use image in your user namespace (Image:007Connery.jpg in User:Crisco 1492). Criterion 9 of the Wikipedia:Fair use criteria states that "Fair use images may be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are not covered under the fair use doctrine." I have removed it on these grounds.

Sincerely, --Oden 09:41, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for signing my autograph book. You are current signee, and lucky #30!!! Why1991 16:29, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Hello, Crisco 1492. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:Ca-on-wd.gif) was found at the following location: User:Crisco 1492. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Please find a free image or media to replace it with, and or remove the image from your userspace. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 19:30, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

Ande-ande Lumut

Hi, I just read your profile and found out that you're interested in hearing the story of Ande-ande Lumut. It's a folk story derived from the long and diverse tradition of Panji cycle, used for wayang performance (among others). The story is about a love story between a prince and a princess, both in disguise, looking for each other. If you want to hear the rest of the story, you are welcome to contact me. Salam! Some concern

While you and jack are indeed making some substantial addition of to Indonesian articles, I do hope you are aware that many are effectively WP:NOT and quite exactly why the WikiProject Indonesia has such a general dislike of such activity - you have copied over from WP id - and that is a serious issue in itself as the id project has little or no interest in the standards that WP en has - the is not a single WP:RS or WP:CITE in sight.

Basically all your hard work is revertable - because copying across from WP id is not in itself sufficient for WP:V - this is not to put down your hard work - but more a case of hoping you have either the initiative to find a source or cite sometime - and remember where you are - not Wp id! SatuSuro 00:14, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Please note that (if you are referring to the Sleman Regency article) that I have marked it as under construction. I will cite what can be cited once I get around to it. I have quite a busy schedule (I have to teach in an hour, as a matter of fact), and noting the citations takes up too much time for me to do it as I go. As for the other regency articles (so far, Batang Regency, Blora Regency, Kudus Regency, Kulon Progo Regency, Bantul Regency, Demak Regency, Gunung Kidul Regency and probably a few more) I have been adding infoboxes ONLY, with information from the Indonesian Wikipedia until such time as I can go to the official websites for a proper citation. Thank you for your concern, but I am well aware that it will have to be cited. I just haven't gotten around to it. Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:25, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Many Indonesian websites are notoriously problematic - I sure hope you have something other than them for reliable sources SatuSuro 00:28, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Having lived in Indonesia (Sleman, to be quite honest) for the past 4 years, I am quite aware of how bad many Indonesian sites are. However, the official website for a government should qualify as Verifiable unless I were writing about corruption or something negative. For foreign websites, the number of hotels can be verified via GoogleMaps (or a tourism guide to Yogyakarta, which generally include Sleman), the tourist attractions (Monjali, later Prambanan and probably Kaliurang. I want to avoid listing every single tourist attraction in Sleman because that would be about 50k itself) can be verified using foreign sites, and the history can be corroborated by books about the Mataram and Majapahit kingdoms, as well as books on the history of Indonesia. But if you want to help out (judging by your name, I am going to assume you speak Javanese and Indonesian), feel free. Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:37, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
I will cite/verify my additions when I get around to it. Um, hello?!? This philosophy stumps me no less than it did when I started on wikipedia 5 years ago. If you don’t have a reliable source you shouldn’t be putting it in. So, you're telling us it’s OK to whack (possibly shit) info into wikipedia and you might look for a reliable source if you have time?
How could you possibly justify not putting it in as you write? Why should others not revert it now? --Merbabu (talk) 00:43, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
If possible, please refrain from using crude language. I have said that I will cite it. That means that I will write the citation when I have the time. (Aku akan menuliskan sumbernya ketika ada waktunya.) I have said that I am busy, and do not have the time to remember the proper format. I will do it when I have more free time. Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:49, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Well the crude language wasn't directed at you, it was a general comment about the "I'll cite it later" attitude across wikipedia. You are to be commended for the efforts to expand, realy. But, it must be backed up. looking forward to seeing you develop the article more. cheers. --Merbabu (talk) 00:55, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Okay, thank you. I understand how you feel (especially since many people do NOT cite, even after they say they will), but my understanding of Wikipedia:Ignore all rules and its explanatory essay is that if it clearly improves the article, even if it is not verifiable, it should go in (and eventually be verified). However, if said information is found to be false (such as Ibnu instead of Sri in the Sleman Regency article), it should be removed or changed. Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:28, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Rubbish - you have the wrong order - on the line below your edit screen -Encyclopedic content must be verifiable- If you dont like WP:RS as a basic guideline - and only like copying across the WP id articles - maybe you should think again about how you use your time SatuSuro 01:36, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Please note that Wikipedia:Ignore all rules is policy, and actually one of the 5 pillars. As for "Must be verifiable", just because the information is not cited yet doesn't mean it is not verifiable. For example, if at one point the Indonesia article did not cite the fact that Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was president, it would be uncited but still easily verifiable. Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:40, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Also, note my explanation of what was translated from the Indonesian Wikipedia: "I copied the information in the infoboxes." When I finish my lessons today, I will cite the official government website for things such as population and area, then remove that translation tag as there will be no translated information left that isn't already cited. Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:43, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for explaining what you are doing - If you are going to regularly keep adding uncited material be prepared to wear what that means in general - rather than reaching for a rule or policy for an excuse - and for whoevers sake dont over rely on indonesian government websites as your main source - if you have access to something like a foreign tourist handbook and it has something - that would be eminently more useful than over-reliance on the govt stuff - enjoy your day SatuSuro 01:50, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
I am not reaching. Please read the essay and the policy page. I will not over rely on government websites. BTW: Do you consider yogyes.com a reliable website? I don't, and will probably not use it. Crisco 1492 (talk) 01:54, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
You live in sleman - if you try google/oggle for yogya or sleman - and the heap after heap of mirror and rubbish sites that will give you half true info - yogyayes is not as bad as some - if you try one you need another to balance - for instance - www.jogjatourism.com - endless grammatical, spelling and factual errors move into these sites as there is no standardising element - I have no time now to give you a long tirade about the problems of public domain information about places and things in java - it would be a real spray - melutus - just try to find more than one to balance against another - in all their mistakes or outright copying SatuSuro 02:09, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
(after a few edit conflicts) I too don't agree with the hierachy of policy suggested. IAR has it's benefits, but it's not get out of jail free card to be freely waved when it suits. But, it seems like we've each made our points and the expansion is to be strongly encouraged - thanks. I still don't get why verification can't be done at the time, and request that you can provide the cites to good RS's ASAP. kind regards and happy editing. --Merbabu (talk) 02:12, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
@Suro: Fine, as a temporary measure we can try and use the English language articles with hopes of finding a book with the information necessary later. Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:22, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
@Merbabu: I understand, and I do not intend to use it as a get out of jail free card (no writing that Sleman has the least corrupt government in Indonesia without a citation, naturally). I will do my best to verify what is there before expanding further. If possible, it would be nice if either you or Suro were to help out. I have pictures aplenty, so that isn't a problem. Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:22, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

hmm more edit conflicts than damned malioboro at going to work time - dont get me wrong - your edits are really in the right direction - and I for one hope you feel enthused to do lots more - there are some issues worth knowing about - and one is that in the past copying from wp id has been an unhappy event - the other is wp;rs free stubs that lie around in limbo - over time I am sure we will improve the articles very well - cheers SatuSuro 02:26, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Ad nauseam

Hello Crisco 1492, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Ad nauseam, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: not all content is in wiktionary. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. SmartSE (talk) 00:53, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Alright, but if it were to be moved to Wiktionary? Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:30, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
If it were all in wiktionary then the criteria would apply, but I think there is enough in the wiktionary article already. The article could certainly be expanded further, although it is only a phrase, it should discuss the way the argument is used. A quick search found: Madsen Pirie (10 May 2006). How to win every argument: the use and abuse of logic. Continuum International Publishing Group. pp. 111–. ISBN 9780826490063. Retrieved 20 February 2011. which shows what I mean and there are many more sources out there. SmartSE (talk) 10:51, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. We don't have the expand template any more, so I don't know what the best tag for that is. Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:11, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
No probs. Either leave it as it is, or make it better :D SmartSE (talk) 11:18, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Pikachu

You put a {{Contradict}} tag in the Concept and creation section, but didn't explain why. You also put a {{which?}} tag on the Pokedex bit. The reference that is sourcing the sentence is from Pokemon Stadium. I don't get what you are asking, because the answer seemed to be right in front of you. Blake (Talk·Edits) 16:33, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Regarding {{which?}}: At the time of my revision (as shown here, the sentence read "The Pokedex, in the series, states...", with the version in the references. As Pokemon has has at least 5 completely different Pokedexes, saying the series' Pokedex is not clear enough (hence the which tag). "In the series" should be removed, with the reference intact, to make it clearer. Regarding the {{Contradict}} tag, compare two sentences from that revision:

"Initially both Pikachu and the Pokémon Clefairy were chosen to be lead characters for the franchise merchandising, with the latter as the primary mascot to make the early comic book series more "engaging". However with the production of the animated series, Pikachu was chosen as the sole flagship Pokémon, in an attempt to appeal to female viewers and their mothers, and under the belief that the creature presented the image of a recognizable intimate pet for children."

and

"The creators of the initial 151 Pokémon characters treated each design equally and allowed the fans to decide which creature would become the official mascot. The fans chose Pikachu, which led to its appearance in the anime alongside Ash"

One states that Pikachu was chosen as the mascot by the creators, while the other states that Pikachu was chosen by the fans. Hence the contradiction. Crisco 1492 (talk) 16:43, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
Fixed. I don't think that IGN source was very reliable in that matter over the other sources that say otherwise. I also fixed up some other things. Blake (Talk·Edits) 17:34, 15 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:09, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

One problem with that article is that the school's website wouldn't load so I couldn't actually look at it. The problem is probably that I'm on the other side of the planet. Thanks again. --NellieBly (talk) 01:40, 16 April 2011 (UTC)

Unused AfD pages

I noticed [1]. It can be confusing to have unused AfD pages lying around, for example if people find them in a search. If there are pages only you have contributed to and you want them deleted then you can add {{db-author}}, or you can ask me directly to delete them. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:17, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, I wasn't sure how to deal with those. I will tag it. Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:18, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Your request for reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged revisions, underwent a two-month trial which ended on 15 August 2010. Its continued use is still being discussed by the community, you are free to participate in such discussions. Many articles still have pending changes protection applied, however, and the ability to review pending changes continues to be of use.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under level 1 pending changes and edits made by non-reviewers to level 2 pending changes protected articles (usually high traffic articles). Pending changes was applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:PendingChanges.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't grant you status nor change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

Citations in Wilfrid Douglas

Hi Dougg, I was just reading through the talk page at Noongar people and I noticed that you created an article on Wilfrid Douglas. After looking it over, I noticed that the references are not Wikified; it also seems to be a mix of a bibliography and a works cited sheet. Would you be interested in fixing it? I cannot as I cannot differentiate between what is being used as a reference and is listed only because it was written by him. Thanks. Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:15, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

Editing the GATE page

Thanks for the comments on my small edit to the GATE page. There was no intention to promote or advertise anything. We are currently in the process of making a new release of the tools within GATE and so I'm updating the page to reflect new features etc. I started small by fixing a link that currently doesn't point anywhere. Whilst it would have been nice to point to another Wikipedia page there isn't a page describing "semantic annotation" that we agree with. The Ontotext hosted page is the best and most accurate description we have seen and hence that is where the link should point to. I know that the page is partly advertising Ontotext's KIM platform but as this is often hosted on top of information extracted using GATE it is a perfect fit. If you can point me at a more appropriate page then great, but for now I intend to reinstate the link you removed as well as make the other edits I have planned in order to bring the page up to date. greenwoodma (talk) 12:58, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes you are correct I do work on GATE (I'm actually a researcher at the University of Sheffield where the majority of GATE development is done). I think that most of the current page has been written/edited by someone heavily involved with GATE and we do and try and keep it as a neutral description. I agree that the page shouldn't be a glowing advert rather a neutral description of the suite of tools. The problem of course is that if we don't edit the page ourselves it can quite quickly get old and then gets marked as out of date (which it did earlier this year) which isn't ideal either. I'll try and keep the description of new tools/features neutral but feel free to keep an eye on it and let me know if you think it is starting to read too much like an advert. Thanks again for the comments. greenwoodma (talk) 13:17, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
I have reverted your change which removed the new section on GATE Mimir. The fact that the text is the same as on the GATE family page is completely irrelevant. The GATE group are the copyright holders of that text and while it might be licensed for non-commercial uses only on gate.ac.uk it does not stop us from re-licensing it under the CC-BY-SA-3.0 License on Wikipedia. Allowing the copyright holder to use multiple licenses as suits them is their right and can never be a copyright violation unless they have made an exclusive license with a third party. greenwoodma (talk) 15:27, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
You've now wasted enough of my time that I've re-written the four sentences you are complaining about so that there can no longer be any lingering copyright questions. Happy? I am, however, not at all impressed by the way this has been dealt with. I've made a number of edits on wikipedia in the past but never bothered to register. This time as I was editing a page I had an interest in I registered in order to be completely transparent. I made no attempt to hide who I was and made it clear as to why I was editing the page. Still when you reported the "copyright violation" you made the insinuation that I was somehow not begin open about my interest in the page. Also you appear to have no idea about how copyright works. The text you complained about was written as a general overview of Mimir and while it might appear on gate.ac.uk that does not stop us (i.e. the copyright holder) re-using it on Wikipedia. Had it been a long article then I agree that it would have been sensible to notify wikipedia of the donation via e-mail but we are talking about four short sentences! I doubt I'd have to look at too many other articles to find a similar level of unreported copying. Anyway as I said I've now wasted too much of my time dealing with this and hope that the re-write can bring this petty issue to a close greenwoodma (talk) 08:02, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Notability

I'm sorry, but please reconsider your views on what constitutes a notable biography. This person won an individual Olympic Gold Medal! Clearly notable under anyone's criteria. Also, where there are sources, but they are listed in an "External links" or other similar section, and not inline, the the {{No footnotes}} and {{BLP sources}} templates should be used, not {{BLP unsourced}}, which only applies if there are no references at all, not just "no properly formatted inline references". Romanian rivers

Good question. One option would be to start a content RfC. Another, simpler, idea would be to post at WT:ROMANIA. That page, however, is not too active, so you'd need to send out a few invitations in order to generate a thorough consensus. - Biruitorul Talk 15:38, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Whitespace

Hi, it seems you just edited Paying For It by removing 750 bytes worth of whitespace. Those spaces were there to make it easier for editors (mainly myself, I suppose) to read and don't affect how the page displays for readers. I want to revert the edit, but I want to make sure I'm not violating some policy beforehand. Is there some issue with that whitespace? Editing it away doesn't free up the databases at all, as the previous versions of the page are still stored there. CüRlyTüRkeyTalkConTribs 21:43, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Answer

Basically, for a music project to be notable, it must do at lease one of these things...

  • Place on a national commercial music chart (see WP:CHARTS for the accepted charts).
  • Be covered by notable artists.
  • Meet the WP:GNG (this usually requires a lot of articles to be written on the project, 20+).

If this is not the case, expect your article to be in AfD in no time. Also...

  • When you make statements like "It is considered the best Indonesian albums of all time.", make sure that you can back up the sentiment with plenty of citations. Editors usually can't. Not only this, but it sounds like a WP:NPOV problem. Usually, stay away from sentences like that unless it says so in the articles.
  • Remember that you must cite everything. Track listings, release dates, etc. This is still in development, but take a look at this article. That is a good example.
  • Look around at other music good articles to get a feel for the layout needed.

Sorry, this is a somewhat lazy reply. If you need any more help, let me know. I Help, When I Can. [12] 23:33, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Editor review

Hi, Crisco 1492! Thanks for sharing your opinion. I'm a bit out of Wikipedia right now due to an overload of work in real life, but will definitely follow the advice you've given to me in my future editing of Wikipedia. Regards, --Eleassar my talk 19:47, 16 May 2011 (UTC)

"Editor Review"; Thank You Note

Hello there, I have left a review under your version of the "Editor Review" in return for reviewing my version of the Editor Review. Please take a look of what I have to say. By the way, I do thank you for taking the time to survey my version, although for now, minor changes will occur at my talk page because I do want to prevent misuse of my talk page (e.g. vandalism, attacking users). Connections

I note that you said you "don't have many connections" on the thread about the G4 speedy clarifications. This is an interesting statement as you don't need many connections to get by on Wikipedia. All you need is the knowledge of where to ask a question, and all you need to know to find that is one page: Wikipedia:Questions. If that doesn't give you the answer directly, then as it says just ask at the Wikipedia:Help desk and either your question will be answered directly or you'll be pointed to where to ask it. In this specific case, all I did was post aat Wikipedia:Bot requests. Thryduulf (talk) 12:54, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your new points and suggestions. I have replied to these here: Wikipedia:Requests_for_feedback/2011_May_15#User:Drgao.2FList_of_diseases_associated_with_infectious_pathogens
Thanks for your your reply again, and for your review, which I found very valuable. Can I move the text of our conversation to the discussion page of User:Drgao/List_of_diseases_associated_with_infectious_pathogens. The issues and points made might come up again, so it might be good to attach our conversation to the page. I will try to get the help of the medical portal. Drgao (talk) 02:16, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
PS: Your medical knowledge must be greater than mine, because I have never spotted any mistakes on House, as much as I enjoy the series! I'll have to watch it more closely next time Drgao (talk) 02:45, 17 May 2011 (UTC)
The article is live: List of human diseases associated with infectious pathogens. It will be interesting to see if it gets accepted. Drgao (talk) 04:41, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks very much for nominating the page – and for the help in getting things going. Drgao (talk) 19:53, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
Great - some more pictures should liven it up a bit, and make it more attractive. Drgao (talk) 23:11, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
The new images look good. I just found this way in Wikipedia that you can crop and resize images: Template:Css_Image_Crop. I used this CSS code to make all the images the same size, plus added a few more images. Drgao (talk) 07:40, 19 May 2011 (UTC)
The page got deleted a few hours ago, but I managed to get the page reinstated (for a while), pending a deletion discussion. Drgao (talk) 21:02, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Heist! (2011)

Hello Crisco 1492, and thanks for your work patrolling new changes. I am just informing you that I declined the speedy deletion of Heist! (2011) - a page you tagged - because: Subject is a motion picture, clearly stated in the lead of the article. . Please review the criteria for speedy deletion before tagging further pages. If you have any questions or problems, please let me know. KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 16:12, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi. I'm letting you know because you have already !voted here: I have added to the nomination another article about a "book" by the same author - all the same remarks apply, and it seems a waste of time to have two separate AfDs. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 14:23, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

DYK for Walt Disney's Riverfront Square

Materialscientist (talk) 16:03, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi Crisco. I see you are kicking the tyres for possible results to AfD for primary schools. I rather fear that you may not be implementing your editing time in the best direction. Primary schools are mostly never deleted, and the worst that happens to them is to be redirected (with any usable content merged) to the page about the school district (USA) or locality (other regions). You'll find all the reasons, or links to them at WP:WPSCH, and this recent AfD together with this discussion will provide essential background. Hope this is useful. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 06:49, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your assistance with my John Fass article.

Hello Crisco,

Thanks for your advice about my John Fass article. I followed your suggestions and figured out how to add the inline notes. Plus I added additonal references to the article. I trust this is satisfactory.

I am not certain of the procedure for removal of the editor's notes at the top of the article. Am I expected to delete those notes after I make the changes to the article? I went ahead and edited those notes off the page, but I see those notes continue to appear on the article.

Thanks again,
