Uploading a file as/for a reference[edit]

I worked on 'Italian units of measurement' a month ago, and I want to use the image 'Tabella_conversione_metrica_1860_MG_7771.jpg' as a reference (for further data) so I transcribed it to a OpenOffice-file.

1. Can I do referencing in this way?

2. Where do I put this file? Wikimedia? Wikidata?

3. How do I log in there? As Castorius?

4. What should the reference look like? The original is a marble tablet.

  1. The marble tablet is a WP:PRIMARY source. That means we can only quote or paraphrase what it says. Any interpretations must come from a secondary source. If you have any questions about the reliability of a source, you can ask the reliable sources noticeboard. I would suggest, however, first asking on the talk page of whatever article you're citing it in (Talk:Italian units of measurement, for example) and then notify the main Wikiproject about it (Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Italy in this example; see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Italy#Proposal: Today's article for improvement: St. Peter's Basilica for an example of notifying the project about a discussion).
  2. If I understand you correctly, you would just create a multi-column list within the article text. No OpenOffice, LibreOffice, or Word file needed. I think including a transcription at commons:File:Tabella conversione metrica 1860 MG 7771.jpg would help search engine indexing, screen readers, and users of other accessibility tools.
  3. Per my answer above, you don't need to for this case, but for future reference: yes. If you navigate to commons:Main page, you should already be logged in. (If not, try clearing your browser's cache.) All Wikimedia projects share a global login.
  4. Cite in a way that someone trying to find the source would be able to do so. In this case, I think <ref>Marble tablet of measurements at [location/address] (as pictured at [[:File:Tabella conversione metrica 1860 MG 7771.jpg]])</ref> works. Remember: use on Wikipedia must follow our policies on primary sources.
Hope you found that helpful! Again, please feel free to discuss on the article talk or relevant Wikiproject. Rotideypoc41352 (talk) 17:11, 28 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
