Large parts of the article you created, John Charles Thompson, appear to be copyright violations from http://www.uschess.org/ratings/thompson.php. I think the article tells an interesting story, but it needs references (see WP:V and WP:CITE) and needs to be told in your own words. Quale 08:14, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for accusing me of unwelcome meddling. I won't undo antything, as the article is assumed to be a copyright violation absent acceptable evidence to the contrary. Permission obtained by the USCF to reprint the article does not automatically extend to Wikipedia. It is also very borderline over whether it meets the WP:BIO requirements for inclusion in Wikipedia, but unless the copyright issues are dealt with, that doesn't matter. See WP:COPYRIGHT for an explanation of what you can do about the copyright problem. Your user name suggests that you are related to the subject of the article. This is OK, but you must be careful about conflict of interest issues. Quale 02:18, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry, Allen, that's not how potential copyright violations are handled. It isn't a question of a demand for perfection. Copyright violations are a legal issue, and can be grounds for immediate deletion of an article. I tried to leave a stub in place, removing just the material that appeared to be a direct copyright violation and notifying you of the problem, but an anonymous user (my guess is that it was you not signed in) added it all back, forcing my hand. I think it would be easier if you just rewrote the article using the Texas Knights issue as a source instead of copying it verbatim, but it's your call. Even if you have the author's permission I think the article should be rewritten as it has problems with lack of encyclopedic tone. Wikipedia is not a memorial, so although I think from the sound of it your father/grandfather/uncle was a great guy, WP:BIO is the benchmark for inclusion in this encyclopedia. I don't make those decisions, they are up to the community, so if the copyright concerns are addressed the article may pass muster and remain part of Wikipedia. If not, remember that deletion of a page is just deletion of a page—if the page were deleted it wouldn't delete John Charles Thompson or his contributions to chess in Texas and the United States.
