Please stop changing spellings[edit]

Please stop making random changes between different English spellings conventions as you did on multiple articles lately. Per WP:ENGVAR, all standards are equally acceptable on Wikipedia as long as they are used consistently within each individual article. The only exception is that articles whose topic is closely connected to a specific English-speaking country should prefer that country's conventional spelling. For European topics, there is no such preference. Moreover, spellings with "-ize"/"-zation" etc. are acceptable both in American and in British English, so there is rarely a necessity to change them to "-ise/-isation", except in order to make things consistent in articles that have used the latter system predominantly from the start. I understand what you are saying but I am simply editing spellings on European related articles so that they match the official variety of English directed for use by the European Union. For European topics it would make sense to use European spelling, don't you think? Thanks. AlanS181824 (talk) 08:04, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No, it wouldn't. The exception to ENGVAR only applies to articles directly connected with English-speaking nations. Europe is not an English-speaking nation. It doesn't matter if the European Union has some official preference in its internal communications. Both American and British spellings are commonly encountered and perfectly acceptable among European writers and readers. If you wish to extend the ENGVAR exception to the whole of Europe, you'd have to garner consensus for that at WT:ENGVAR first. Until then, you need to stop making those changes now. Please also don't invent words/spellings[edit]

Hi. By extension to the above, please also don't invent your own words or spellings. As per the linked and verified reference in the Garda Síochána article, the most common (English) term for an individual member (or group of members) of the service is "Guard" (or "Guards"). "Gard" is not a common spelling. Not least as "Gard" is not a word. Guliolopez (talk) 11:33, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
