Hi there, my name's Peter Coombe and I'm a Wikimedia Community Fellow working on a project to improve Wikipedia's help system. At the moment I'm trying to learn more about how people use and find the current help pages. If you could help by filling out this brief survey about your experiences, I'd be very grateful. The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their July 2012 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on July 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on July 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to eliminate the articles tagged in April, May and June 2011 from the queue and to complete all requests placed before the end of June. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 6 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in April–June 2011", and "Longest article". Thanks to the contributions of our many members and supporters, WP:YORKS has become a leading local British WikiProject in terms of the total number of articles supported (up from 9,824 last month to 9,880 on June 28th). In the area of GAs WP:YORKS at 78 is just ahead of WP:GM who have 70. WP:GM has the lead in FAs at 56 out of a total number of 3,009 articles.
Currently we have thirty one Yorkshire featured articles:
The number has been kept deliberately low to give us a fighting chance of improving them to at least GA status, also so we can concentrate our efforts on these first.
Did You Know?
At the suggestion of a member I have added Did You Know? entries for the project to the article activity section of the newsletter. Not having had any entries since January this month saw seven Yorkshire related articles appear in this front page section. There is a list of the recent entries from the project's articles on the main project page with a full list here.
When working on an article it is always worth considering if it can be nominated for the Did You Know? section on the main page. May be a little more work but it does get the article recognised and exposed to a wider audience. The main requirements for a nomination are that, within the last five days, it was created, expanded fivefold or, for an unsourced BLP, newly referenced and expanded twofold. If you think an article meets these basic requirements then take a look at the eligibility criteria and make a nomination. The hook is the important part of the process as that is the text that will appear on the front page and this must be mentioned in the article with an appropriate inline citation to back it up. If you can suggest more than one hook for an article then the more chances of it been selected for inclusion on the front page. If you do nominate it is important to keep an eye on the nomination as there may be questions/suggestions from those reviewing the hooks that you will need to respond to if the nomination is to succeed.

Moves Please be careful when performing articles moves and ensure that you also move all the talk sub-pages and update any image fair use rational. Otherwise the archives, to-do lists, assessment comments and GA reviews get lost and the image may be deleted as it has an incorrect FUR.

Progress report: We're almost on track to meet our targets for the drive. Great work, guys. We have reduced our target group of articles—May, June, and July 2011—by about 40%, and the overall backlog has been reduced by 264 articles so far, to around 2500 articles.

Invitation to wikiFeed
Hello Acabashi,
I'm part of a team that is researching ways to help Wikipedia editors find interesting content to contribute to Wikipedia. More specifically, we are investigating whether content from news sources can be used to enhance Wikipedia editing. We have created a tool, called wikiFeed, that allows you to specify Twitter and/or RSS feeds from news sources that are interesting to you. wikiFeed then helps you make connections between those feeds and Wikipedia articles. We believe that using this tool may be a lot of fun, and may help you come up with some ideas on how to contribute to Wikipedia in ways that interest you. Please participate! Participation: Out of 45 people who signed up this drive, 31 have copy-edited at least one article. Lfstevens continues to carry most of the weight, having edited 360 articles and over a quarter of a million words already. Thanks to all who have participated! Progress report: We are once again very close to achieving in our primary goal—removing the oldest three months from the backlog. Only 35 such articles remain at press time. The total backlog currently sits at under 2400 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We are just two articles away from completing all requests made before July 2012 (both are in progress).

Moortown Lincolnshire
Hi Acabashi
Apologies in advance if I have contacted the wrong person or have not followed Wikipedia etiquette - I am not a regular user.
I chose to contact you as you are the last person to edit the page I was looking at. It is the page on Moortown Lincolnshire. The picture on that page is not Moortown, but is the nearby hamlet of North Kelsey Moor. Is it possible to remove the picture?
I have added text to that page in the past, but I see that it has been mostly removed - I can't show citations, but just know the information that I added from personal experience. I was a member of the Golden Jubilee committee that organised the Moortown sign and plaque. I appreciate that this has been discounted though as I guess anyone can write anything and it would soon get very misleading.
My real concern is the photo though as it is misleading to have a photo of another village on the Moortown page.

Sporting feast
Just in case it has escaped members notice but August is a big sporting month with the 2012 Olympic Games taking place at the start of the month and the 2012–13 Football season getting under way from the middle of the month. There are likely to be lots of articles that will need changing as we go through the month with new signings, new records etc. so keep an eye on sport related articles and try and keep them up to date.
I have picked a pair of sport related items for this month's collaboration from the suggestions on the project talk page. So those of you with a sporting slant should have plenty to get going with this month.

Schools back
This month is the time for the start of a new school year. All of those pupils going to a new school will be looking for information on their new school and so the school articles under the project's banner will get higher than usual hits. It would be good if members could keep an eye out for vandalism and the addition of vanity entries on the local school articles.

Progress report: We're almost on track to meet our targets for the drive. Great work, guys. We have reduced our target group of articles—August, September, and October 2011—by about 44%, and the overall backlog has been reduced by 58 articles so far, to around 2600 articles. The biggest difference between this drive and the previous one is a stronger focus on large articles, so total word counts are still comparable.
Don't forget about the Copy Edit of the Month contests! Voting for the August contest has been extended through the end of the month. You don't have to make a submission to vote!

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.
Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

NEW!! In the week from Sunday 21 October to Saturday 27 October, we are holding a Project Blitz, in which we will copy edit articles tagged with {{copyedit}} belonging to selected project(s). For the first blitz, we'll start with WikiProject Olympics and WikiProject Albums and add more Projects to the blitz as we clear them. The blitz works much like our bimonthly drives, but a bit simpler. Everyone is welcome to take part, and barnstars will be awarded.
