UK Community Notice - IRC meeting

Dear Wikipedian,

This is the first of what will hopefully be a regular notice to help bring together the UK community so that you can be involved in some amazing things. Richard Sharp (politician)

Hi Roger ! remember me ? you gave me, as a novice, lots of help and encouragement when putting the Richard Sharp article together some while ago. I have written no further major articles but made spasmodic additions to various other pieces. I just noticed that the pastel portrait of Sharp has been removed and I wondered if you could tell me why ? I know the artist, Margaret Cairns was also puzzled. You may recall that the single unique, master drawing of Sharp is closely guarded at the Bodleian but Cairns work, taken from it, is quite a good likeness. Maybe you can get it replaced or I can help overcome any difficulties that may have arisen? Anyway, all good wishes for now,and I hope I am contacting you properly. Hi Victuallers... I saw (and posted) in this thread. FYI, I was the nominator for that article. May I suggest that requests to help in the DYK prep areas and queues to editors receiving their first ever credit are inappropriate? I had imagined that any alterations necessary to bring a new article up to standard would be the responsibility of the person who originally wrote the article. Your response "Be bold" to my Fabergé Museum comment suggests I am wrong. Is it in fact the responsibility of someone who chooses to comment on a suggestion, to make improvements themselves? I ask because I made some improvements to Gillellus inescatus, another nomination for December 18th, but I am unsure whether I have brought it up to the required standard. An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump

New article patrol

I would like some advice on the sort of standards that are being looked for when patrolling new articles.

Ancient Kingdom of Arakan is an interesting article but not laid out in normal Wikipedia style. I wondered whether it was copied from somewhere else - the text mentions figures but there are no figures - but did not know how to check that and the references are very strangely arranged. I left a {{wikify|date=January 2011}} message but did not know whether this was correct.

TERRATEL also has problems. I doubted whether the subject was notable, the article name is in capitals and it reads like an advertisement. I marked it

but really thought it unsuitable for inclusion at all. What do you think?

High Sheriffs of Derbyshire

Thanks for the note. The list says: "*1454: Sir John Griesley of Griesley." As anyone knows who has examined old texts, you are quite correct: orthography varied wildly. However, it doesn't mean that because something was misspelled in an early text that it must continue to be spelled incorrectly, when the correct spelling is known. In this case, there is no 'Griesley', Derbyshire. The nearest candidate is indeed Gresley, which in fact produced one Sir John Gresley, who served as MP for Derbyshire in the same time frame.[3] In this source, you'll notice the same misspelling of 'Griesley,' which is equated to that of the family of Gresley of Gresley.[4] As there is no 'Griesley' in Derbyshire, and as the name identifies the man as 'Sir John Griesley,' it's clear that the person to whom the source refers is the MP Sir John Gresley of Gresley. Silk throwing

Greetings from Rochester. Seeking a little relaxation I started to look a Lombe's Mill from the point of view of its significance to the design of the later cotton mills, and the consequent influence on and of Silk throwing, which I then discovered was an article that I had started earlier. Well, I had the Belper North book so I had most of the core data- but the rest was online. I could however do with a some input now from some local sources- for a topic that is so important one gets to feel pretty lonely. I see that you are working in cooperation with the Derby Museums and the Sill Mill is due to be closed in March, would it be possible to do a thorough photo blitz on all silk related items in the museum before it is too late- I haven't been so I don't know what is there. Engravings (I believe 1727 and 1797) are also of interest.

Don Charles

I know we do not 'know' each other, but you might have seen my user name (my own name as it turns out) around here. The above new article was created by me and, in the past, I personally would have put it up for DYK. I've had over 50 DYKs in my time, a fairly modest total, but it proves I have a feel for the criteria involved. However, since the self-nomination process has altered from the beginning of this year, I do not feel comfortable reviewing other editors work, as part of allowing any article I create to be put forward. I suspect I am not alone. My question is this - can I ask ask someone (ie. you) to nominate Don Charles' article for DYK consideration, or is this seen as 'bucking the system'.

I fully appreciate, even if my request is within the 'rules', and even if you think the article is worthy to put forward, that you may feel you do not wish to participate. No problem; just let me know. Many thanks for your time.

Derby Museum

Thankyou. Yes I will join everyone at Derby Museum (I'm riding the first train on the reopened Wirksworth Branch the day before - busy weekend!) I have added the category link to Duffield Castle, Derbyshire as they have the bucket and carved stone dug up by my Grandad. Maybe some other things, possibly those that were in Duffield Parish Room. Though I'm not sure they are a collection as such.

I'm not quite sure what the scope of the project will be. Is there, for instance, actual material in the Museum relating to the Philosophical Society? Does the project only relate to Derby or to the county? I imagine the oldest artefact around would be the Hopton Axe :-), though I dont know where it is. Chevin (talk) 21:32, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

Would you confirm that the scope of the project relates to artefacts and specific displays in the Museum. Hence Duffield Castle would not feature (unless there was a display relating to it), simply because of the Norman Bucket, but the bucket would be featured if there was a specific article about it? My contribution to the Vietnamese Project

Since you welcomed me to the English Wikipedia, I thought I would ask you about this. I went into my global contributions and discovered I am credited with one edit to the Vietnamese project. I am indeed listed as the first edit on the article on Galerga . I had made an edit to the English article on Galerga, but did not go to the Vietnamese Wikipedia. The English article isn't even linked to the Vietnamese one (at least at the time I viewed it). Did someone start the Galerga article by copying from the English edit page? Derby again

You probably know something I don't. Is any of the museum and art gallery still housed in the Victorian building, or was it all moved out? (The Bonnie Prince Charlie room, to take an example?) The English page sort-of-says it all moved out, but sources generally seem inconsistent on this. As I understand it, the buildings are attached, one facing on to Wardwick, the other on to The Strand, is that right? I like to know these things as I am spreading stuff across the weikipedias ... Hindi and neighbours

The Indian-language wikipedias are rather poorly developed (why? I'd say because so many of their speakers, especially if computer-literate, are also English-literate). Someone had done the English counties in Hindi, but there were articles for only two English cities, London and Oxford -- and (unless I missed one) no museums or art galleries outside India at all. I was adding categories as well as articles! and touch wood I was doing it more or less right.

I saw how you gradually became aware of the intellectual level of the discussion at Richard Knill Freeman. Happened to me too. Let's hope they'll have moved on in a few days. Meanwhile I had a nice email from David French, the main source of information, who is in fact a Wikipedian himself but had never got round to starting the article. Multilingual challenge

You have probably been having further thoughts and discussions about this. Having now taken the measure of what's available on other wikis already (in most cases little or nothing) I'm ready to suggest what, exactly, the challenge should be. I was working it out while digging the onion bed this morning. We need to go for points (as is well known, points mean prizes). We don't (on those other wikis) want to emphasise featured article status. If they didn't even have an article on Derby till now, a featured article on a museum object in Derby would be out of balance. We want more exposure, and that ideally means as many as possible reasonable-quality articles related to and linked to the museum.

As a basis, I suggest: a single wikipedian or a team of two can enter for the challenge: the aim is to gain (say) 24 points for contributions on at least two wikipedias: a good or featured article by local rules counts 8, a short article (500 words of text) counts 5, a very short article (100 words of text) counts 1; all articles, to qualify, must contain an in-text link to the museum and an external link to the museum site.

I also suggest, if there is a limit (as there might well be) on the number of prizes, they be awarded on the final date to those who have scored the highest number of points (or to those who reached 24 first, or a combination), but that all entrants who reach 24 points by the final date get an official barnstar, certificate, or whatever.

Im reading this with interest as a newbie in GLAM. I wonder if QR codes couldnt be put on signs in front of historic buildings. The historic center of Mexico City could benefit from this as just about every building is historic and Ive already written a number of articles. OK, that qualifies as cooler. Here in Mexico, however, I think the two important languages to have relevant articles in will be Spanish and English. However, other languages such as Japanese would be good too, especially since many institutions do not have the resources to create/translate stuff into those languages as well.... When nominated on 2/25/11, the article was 2040 chars, and Bink hadn't made any edits. It passed the size requirement, and during the discussion over the hook Bink, as well as other editors, expanded it. Per the rules, "articles that have been created, or expanded fivefold or more" (emphasis mine). I guess what I'm saying is, we both can't get credit for meeting the size requirement. When I started adding to the article, I did so in response to Lionelt's suggested hook having several editors point out various problems with it, the most serious being that it was too self-congratulatory in tone. The DYK nomination appeared to be tanking. I looked at the article, shot a few searches into Google and discovered I could possibly throw another few hooks into the hat, to make it fly. I spent 3–4 hours bringing the article from 5kb to 13kb, including the deletion of a paragraph that did not seem to fit. I added logo and lawsuit images, and a bunch of good information that was not there before. I felt at the time (and still do) that the DYK nom was not going anywhere, stalled with little hope, and that my participation helped significantly to make it happen. That's why in this diff I added three ALT hooks and added myself to the DYKmake bot as a co-writer. I did not add myself because I thought I expanded the article 5x, I added myself because I thought I helped it as a co-author to pass DYK. All other changes are fine I think, but I don't understand challenge 3. What does this "any Wikipedia project which is based on a language or country (outside the USA or UK)" mean? My suggestion is, yes, yes, to have such an award, and maybe for Jimmy Wales himself to allocate it to one or more Wikipedias that have improved notably as a result of the challenge; but maybe to announce it as a separate prospect, a week or so later, rather than confuse the issue right now, when the challenges we're proposing are aimed at individual Wikipedians.

I think that replacing Derby with Wright is a pity, because Derby is already an international word for a competition, whereas Wright isn't; and the artist himself, though good, isn't as well known as he should be! I noted those interwiki links on the Wright painting pages. Maybe they are for some special demonstration this Saturday? In general they have disadvantages as well as advantages: disadvantages being, possibly, (1) that the bots which usually maintain interwiki links may be puzzled by them and may keep removing them; (2) that they make it look as if an article exists (and so needn't be created) when in fact it doesn't (and could be created). Trolleybuses in Derby 2

Regarding this and your question: Fixing the sentence requires adding another whole phrase or sentence, and requires knowledge of the subject that I do not possess. While I know a lot about trolleybuses, I don't know anything about trolleybuses in Derby. The person who wrote the sentence presumably knows what its relevancy to the subject is, and I was hoping that that person would clarify the sentence. I figured it was Bahnfrend, but I just checked the page history and now see that it was you, so it looks like we're at a dead end. Maybe I will delete it, in that case. The two points probably are relevant (and that's why I tagged it, rather than deleting), but it's not apparent to me what the relevance is, and thus it likely won't be to the average (non-UK) reader either. I forgot to mention that the sentence also neglects to say what "the experiment by London United Tramways" was (the use the definite article the suggests it is assumed all readers will know of said experiment). Masson

I didn't put them there- I just wish that some one had! Nothing concrete yet, I have been rather overwhelmed by the time it takes to process photos and find references. Masson is happy with photos being taken but the exhibits are poorly presented. The leaflet was last edited in before 1999 and the position of the exhibits has changed, they are very short of volunteers. In fact that Sunday it was manned by one guy. It desparately needs to get its interpretation boards in order- which in a sense in an opportunity. My Queen Street contact is on holiday, but Helmshore is promising, but nothing until next week- I am waiting for some staff training notes to be sent to me. The curator is on the ball and bi-lingual Swedish. She is happy with low res images (640-480s) going on commons, but I will send them to her first for confirmation. MOSI Manchester I need for cross reffing purposes but it seems to suffering from a lack of cash and TLC. In comparison to the others it seems highly over staffed. So my plans are first to get the images I have from Masson uploaded, write a Helmshore article, look at the Derby list and see if there is anything I can do with the reference books I have here in Glossop, and spend some of the weekend with my host. --ClemRutter (talk) 13:38, 14 April 2011 (UTC)

I have got a small Commons template working (but not yet documented) that can be added to GLAM linked images, with the wording that the curators wish to see. Look at the two images to see how I have added it to the Source section of the description. It is at Commons:Template:GLAM-link for the source. I have put in the keywords Derby, and Masson, and made up some wording. These may be useful, I see it as being part of a toolkit to reassure curators at other museums we approach. Thanks, it was good to meet everyone. I was at the Local Records Office and the Museum today, as it happens, chasing up info on the Hopton Axe. I saw the archaeologist and she said how she enjoyed the day. As for the railway, I'm in contact with someone at the Silk Mill. The trouble is the place just isnt big enough for me. I'm trying to find time to work out some simple 'stories' about how the wheels run on the rails, how the track is built and the development of signalling. I welcome the NRM's interest - I understand they are taking an interest in the GCR at Loughborough. Being a York enterprise I had always thought them somewhat LNER centric. I did try to get them (and Derby Museum) interested in the High Speed Freight Vehicle which I maintain is the forerunner of all modern trains, but nobody had room for it and it doesnt look very inspiring. I am hoping to do quite a few more Indonesia-related articles in the near future; doing the Badai Pasti Berlalu series made me see how many legendary Indonesian entertainers we are missing. Over the next few days I'll take stock of progress in the various languages, add categories wherever it seems reasonable and make sure the internal links are as helpful as possible; then, perhaps, we could arrange for one of those banner adverts to appear one day, saying something like -- have you taken the Wright Challenge?
