Early life[edit]

Second of the thirteen children of Tomás and Peggy Ó Domhnalláin, Donlon was born in Athboy, County Meath, in 1940.[1]

He attended St. Finian's College, County Westmeath, and continued his education at Maynooth College. He also graduated from University College Dublin (UCD),

Public sector career[edit]

Donlon worked at the Department of Finance.

He was appointed to the post of Ambassador of Ireland[1] to the United States of America in 1978, and while on that posting worked with the Friends of Ireland, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tip O'Neill, and others.

Returning to the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1981, Donlon was involved in work on the Angle-Irish Agreement. He later became Secretary General of the Department.[1]

Private sector career[edit]

Advisory roles and directorships[edit]

Special Advisor to the Taoiseach on Northern Ireland,[1] 1994

2002: Chairperson of Governing Authority of the University of Limerick,[1] also Special Olympics and several commercial companies

In 2016, he was appointed as Chairperson of the Press Council.[1]
