Three of the four knights who murdered Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral, (namely Sir Hugh de Morville, Lord of Westmorland, Sir William de Tracy and Sir Richard le Breton), took refuge here and, as a penance, did much to restore this building. Until 1690, the benefaction was recorded on an inscribed stone on the chancel.
