Hospital Playlist is a South Korean medical drama television series written by Lee Woo-jung and directed by Shin Won-ho as the second installment of their Wise Life series. It aired on tvN from March 12, 2020, to September 16, 2021. The series focuses on the lives of five doctors: assistant professor of general surgery Lee Ik-jun (Jo Jung-suk), assistant professor of pediatric surgery Ahn Jeong-won (Yoo Yeon-seok), associate professor of cardiothoracic surgery Kim Jun-wan (Jung Kyung-ho), assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology Yang Seok-hyeong (Kim Dae-myung), and associate professor of neurosurgery Chae Song-hwa (Jeon Mi-do). After becoming friends in medical school, they ended up working at the same hospital, Yulje Medical Center, in their forties.

Creation[edit]

Both fans of baseball, Shin and Lee have referenced the sport in several of their works, including Hospital Playlist. To easily distinguish characters connected to one of the six hospital departments represented in the series, Shin and Lee decided to name them after players from six different teams: NC Dinos (department of cardiothoracic surgery), Doosan Bears (department of hepatobiliary surgery), Kia Tigers (department of neurosurgery), Hanwha Eagles (department of obstetrics and gynecology), Kiwoom Heroes (department of pediatric surgery), and SK Wyverns (department of emergency medicine).[1][2]

Main characters[edit]

Lee Ik-jun[edit]

Jo Jung-suk portrayed Lee Ik-jun.

Lee Ik-jun is an assistant professor of general surgery at Yulje Medical Center. Originally from Changwon, he came to Seoul with his childhood friend Jun-wan to attend Seoul National University, where he met Jeong-won, Seok-hyeong, and Song-hwa during freshmen year. He fell in love with Song-hwa, but did not confess his feelings to avoid hurting Seok-hyeong, who was also in love with her. After school, he married and had a child, U-ju, but his wife soon moved to Germany for work. At the start of the series, he has been raising U-ju on his own for a few years with the help of a nanny.

Ik-jun is portrayed by Jo Jung-suk. The first actor to be cast in the series, Jo accepted the role without even having read the script in order to work with Shin and Lee. To prepare for the role, Jo visited a hospital where he met outpatients, talked with doctors, and witnessed a liver transplant. Jo said the experience helped him develop his character, commenting: "Instead of focusing on playing a doctor in itself, I tried to focus on what Lee Ik-jun would be like as a doctor."[3]

Ahn Jeong-won[edit]

Yoo Yeon-seok portrayed Ahn Jeong-won.

Ahn Jeong-won/Andrea is an assistant professor of pediatric surgery at Yulje Medical Center. His father is the son of Yulje's founder and he has two older brothers, both priests, and two older sisters, both nuns. He and his friend Seok-hyeong attended Seoul National University, where he met Ik-jun, Jun-wan, and Song-hwa during freshmen year. Jeong-won plays the drums for The group later formed plays the drums in . At the start of the series, he lives with Jun-wan. He is a devout Christian He has been applying to enter a seminary to become a priest.

Jeong-won is portrayed by Yoo Yeon-seok. Comparisons were drawn between Yoo's performance as Jeong-won and his portrayal of another doctor, ambitious Kang Dong-joo, in Dr. Romantic. Reviewers praised the way Yoo conveyed the differences between the characters, establishing both
