In the afternoon hours of May 21, 2024, an extremely powerful and violent EF4 tornado hit the communities of Corning, Iowa and Greenfield, Iowa, killing 2+ people and injuring 30+ others. The tornado was multi-vortex, and was extremely well-documented by multiple storm chasers.
Meteorological synopsis[edit]
Throughout May 21, a squall line began to develop over large portions of Texas, eventually condensing and moving into Iowa.
Tornado summary[edit]
The tornado initially touched down southwest of Corning as a large dust cloud, but immediately strengthened into a rope with heavy debris. The tornado then began to rapidly strengthen, hitting and disintegrating a wind turbine outside of Prescott. The tornado took on a "dead man walking" shape with multiple vortices before lifting at a currently unknown time. A barn in rural areas of Corning was completely destroyed, and a house was media-confirmed to have been slabbed in Prescott, although the durability of the house is unknown. 2 people were killed in a hospital, and over 30 have been injured. The tornado entered the outskirts of Greenfield, inflicting ptoential EF4+ damage to hundreds of homes, and one home was slabbed off of its' foundation, indicating potential EF5 damage.
Fatalities[edit]
Multiple people were killed when the tornado hit Greenfield, and over 30 have been confirmed to have been injured. A storm chaser was killed when the vehicle that they were storm spotting in took a direct hit from the tornado.
