Classification[edit]

Classification of protein kinases can be done either by chemical (enzymatic) activity or structure. Chemical activity classifies protein kinases into the following categories:

Category EC number
Serine/threonine protein kinase 2.7.11
Tyrosine protein kinase 2.7.10
Dual-specificity kinase 2.7.12
Histidine kinase 2.7.13

With respect to amino-acid sequence and thus structure the following families have been proposed:
